NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT: is just about to pack in - HELP

NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT: is just about to pack in - fan is running like a lawnmower. It is the card that came with original comp.
Have new Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card - which is suitable for my G5 Quad - Machine Name: Power Mac G5 Quad Machine Model: PowerMac11,2 CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1) - problem is - fitting it. The new card comes with Y connection cables - that need to be connected to the cd/dvd drive to get it's power.
MAJOR PROBLEM - the cable sets for the optical drive - are old - and bear no resemblance to the Y cable set for new card in that the power in/out are combined into 1 cable - not a male/female needed??? I only have 1 optical drive bay???
Hoping someone has experienced this when upgrading graphics card - and found a fix for cable problem?

I'm scared to say it - but here Goes - SUCCESS.............
Firstly, maybe My Quad was built on a Friday or a Monday - cos what should have taken a jittery old man like my myself - 30 mins - ended up as 2 hours +. The pics are all correct in the help sections - and the fan is UNBELIEVABLE - however - there is one snag;
Secondly, if u suffer from nerves - get a techie to do it - or at least a computer inards savvy person. It is, fiddely - nerve racking - and needs a few modifications + patience;
Thirdly - if u or someone else does it - _*take off*_ the aluminium cradle - the card sits on - or you'll end up in all sorts of bother - it will need modification once u have the fan fitted so;
Fourthly, the end of the cradle that slides into the support groove - hacksaw/cut off at the 3rd screw = L__here so 2 screw holes left on the supporting front edge and 1 corner hole left - why? -
Finally, my 1st attempt was a failure - because I didn't do Fourthly. The card wasn't fully supported - and must have slipped it's connections - and/or it may have temporarily shorted. It is vital you keep the card supported and level.
My graphics have improved - I kid you not. My Graphics chip now runs at 43-45c - before the new fan >84c+ and even up to 110c at a scary time.
AND IT IS SO QUIET - thank you Japamac - without your guidance and suggestions - it would have been a very expensive - back up computer. Best regards, B

  • Will a XFX NVIDIA GeFORCE 7800GT VIDEO CARD work in a G5 quad?

I am thinking of getting a new graphics card and saw this one: XFX NVIDIA GeFORCE 7800GT.
I was just wondering if it will actually work in a Mac?
    Thanks

Nope, that's a PC card. The ROM file on that card will be designed to work with a PC's BIOS and won't work with the Mac's Open Firmware.
You either need to find a Mac version of this card, or the firmware needs to be flashed with a Mac ROM. More information is available here.

  • MSI Geforce 7800 GTX with MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT in SLI?

Hi. I bought the MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT a few months ago with the intention of buying a second to run in SLI. Now i can't seem to find anywhere that sells it at a decent price. Originally i bought it from www.ebuyer.co.uk but they have discontinued it.
Could i buy a MSI Geforce 7800 GTX and run it in SLI? They should have the same gpu and the specs aren't that different.

  • Nvidia GeForce 7800GT

    Hi
Can anyone tell me the safe operating temperature range for the GeForce 7800GT in a Quad G5 , I was not able to find any reference to this on the Apple sites , I have set Temperature Monitor to warn me at 85 degrees Celsius and it reaches 85 degrees Celsius after 4 or 5 minutes of running the Apple screen saver "iTunes Art Work" or anything that has allot of movement and color in it. Is it safe to put the temp monitor warning for the Graphics Processor to a higher value as I don't want to damage the Quad. It's running a 30" and a 23" Apple display in a room that is kept is a constant 20/21 degrees Celsius. Or is the 7800GT indeed faulty.Any clues on this would be appreciated.
    Cheers in advance.

Nvidia is fairly noncommittal on temp:

This said, I wonder if you are running the latest driver- found references to temperature reporting discrepancies under previous versions. Unfortunately, there are no Mac drivers referenced on the Nvidia site.
If you are experiencing no performance issues during the higher temperature condition, it might be a problem of inadequate airflow around the card (as well as case exhausting). One might consider a fan upgrade. t

  • NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra just died - need equivalent for my G5 - HELP

    Hi,
I reviewed the posts but didn't find a simple answer to my mundane (if critical to me!) question:
I have a G5 as outlined below. I upgraded it the very day the 30"monitors were announced and received the:
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL Card kit
My card died this morning and I need to replace it with a functional equivalent, I know the 6800 is rare which is fine- I just need whatever is available today to get fixed up.
Does anyone know what card I can easily get to do the job?
    Thanks so much.
    My G5
    Model Name: Power Mac G5
    Model Identifier: PowerMac7,3
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

Alot depends on whether you ever have a second monitor hooked up.
There is a better, faster card than a 6800 for G5s called a 7800GS, but it only has 1 @ DVI port, and one VGA port. The DVI port can run a 30" just fine however. (Means it supports "Dual Link") These are all flashed PC cards....but the ROM is quite stable and they are GREAT cards.
If you need to run 2 @ 30" DVI monitors than you will need to find a Mac 6800 on EBay. It HAS to be an original Mac one, the "flashed" PC ones NEVER have Dual Link capability.
Another option would be a Max X800 XT...it has a DVI port good for a 30" and an ADC port which is only useful for an older Mac ADC monitor...but it can be converted to DVI with a relatively cheap adapter. These cards are super rare but occasionaly show up on Ebay. There are flashed X800s but most are VGA only...the DUal Link DVI ones are ULTRA rare.
No Radeon 9800 ever had Dual Link, so don't waste any time looking at those.
There is a retail option though I am not certain they are available anymore...the Radeon 9600 Mac and PC edition....has to be that one as most Mac 9600s didn't run Dual Link. These cards worked in Mac or PC and had 256 Megs of RAM. Sadly, they are MUCH slower than a 6800.
I can't stress enough that you need to find a card with Dual Link capability to run a 30". Otherwise you will end up looking at your 30" at 1280x800 instead of 2560x1600.
Try BruinMacs on Ebay, college kid who helped write the 7800GS ROM, now selling them for less than everyone else. He sometimes even has the X800 with Dual Link too, ask him.
Sadly, you will find that the official Mac 6800 and X800 cards still fetch $400 or so...the old "Supply & Demand" rule being hard to avoid. If you can find one on a local Craigslist ad, grab it up !!! (after testing)

  • NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT: Questions about my 17" MBP

I have a 17" MBP with the 8600 graphics (early 2008 4,1). I have yet to have an issue with the card and I am wondering if there is a way to tell if I might have an updated version of the card or logic board. I love my computer but don't want to hold on to it if it is the ticking time bomb I have read about. I am terrified at the moment as this is my only laptop and I dont want to have it die on me.

It's 4 years old, if you had the "problem" it would have manifested itself by now.
Nothing you can do either way if it is as your past 4 years and out of 3 year AppleCare, so your running on fumes.
Since laptops last about 4 years anyway, your about due for a replacement.
If you want to do something to help it last a bit longer, have the fans removed and the vent grill behind them cleaned of the dust bunnies that collect there every 6 -12 months.
Use external keyboards and mice, cd drives. All you can do really, should have been done when you first got it.
My 26 month old Early 2011 still runs fast as the day I bought it, as I didn't upgrade to the bloated 10.8, nor problemistic 10.7 and it's bad firmwares.
I also have the keyboard area covered with the original packaging, use external devices for nearly everything so it still appears brand new.
I even have the box it came in protected.
I could sell this thing on eBay at anytime and collect the best price. 10.6 anti-glare 17" is highly desireable for many reasons.

  • IPhone is not showing up in iTunes. I've tried just about everything. Please help!

Everything was working just fine until I updated my iTunes to the latest version (11.1.3).
I'm using a PC with Windows 7. I have an iPhone 5 and a couple of different iPod. Now all of them wont connect to iTunes.
I've tried everything, uninstalling, re-installing, all the troubleshooting and tutorials on the apple support online.
Today I was on the phone for about 30 mins with the apple support staff and we couldn't get it to work.
My other PC, which also Windows 7 has the newest iTunes installed and all of our iPhones and iPods have no trouble.
After I install the new iTunes on this PC, my iPhone is apearing in the computer, but will not connect to iTunes.
iTunes diagnostic will say it is not finding any iPhone or iPod.
I've even removed all of my antivirus software, tried re-installing an older iTunes version, nothing seems to fix it.
The apple support staff I talked to said a few other people have had a similar problem and they don't really know how to fix it.
As far as USB ports, they should all be ok. I've tried other devices (printer, scanner, flash drive) and they are working fine when plugged in.
It must be something to do with the apple mobile device support....?
Anyone's help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

it could be the cord. i have that same issue with my phone and it was the cord. you're not supposed to store the usb cord (or any other electrical cord) in a bunched up manner. anyway, i played around with my cord by bending it in different directions and now the cord works and my phone is recognized again. if all else fails, best to buy a new cord.

  • NOISY NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT

Is anyone else experiencing a loud fan noise with their Nvidia GeForce 7800GT?
I had it checked in with Apple, and the tech guys said that its normal for this
particular graphics card to be loud.
    But it is REALLY LOUD!
    Sounds like a fridge.
Which is a shame because the Quad is supposed to be quiet, if used with the standard graphics card.
Any way to solve this? Besides just waiting for the next generation of
    graphics cards?
    G5 Quad.   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Martin,
Do a search here for 7800 and in Aperture forums. Some folks have updated the standard fan on this card with a zalman one which is much quieter apparently.

  • Any difference between GeForce 7800GT and Radeon X1900 for Aperture?

I keep reading about this Radeon card and I'm curious. Does anyone know if there is a major difference between the Radeon X1900 (for a G5) and the Nvidia GeForce 7800GT and how it affects Aperture? I'm running a G5 dual 2.3 with 5GB RAM and the 7800GT and Aperture is somewhat pokey. Would the X1900 make a big difference with Aperture or not?
    AMR

guess I should wait until it comes out and get some
hard numbers about the X1900 performance.
http://www.barefeats.com will be doing Aperture-specific tests that should prove informative.

  • Is the ATI Radeon HD 4870 quiter than the NVidia GeForce 8800 GT ?

My NVidia GeForce 8800 GT just died and I have the choice to have the same one installed or to to go for the ATI 4870. (Technically I prefer the ATI but my family would prefer the quieter one!)
My main concern is the noise. Is the 4870 quieter or noisier?

I haven't run Photoshop for hours on end or otherwise made such intensive use of my card but I don't hear the 4870 run at all, As the Hatter says there is a noise at startup but no more. I have never used the other card you mention to compare it.

  • Best PCI E Profile for two nVidia GeForce 7300GTs?

Have been running my two Cinema HD 23 displays at 1920 x 1200 as an extended desktop from ONE nVidia GeForce 7300GT.
Just bought spare used Apple nVidia GeForce 7300GT.
Am planning on buying another Cinema HD 23 display, for a total of 3 displays, thus the second card.
Am planning on running all three displays as extended desktop at 1920 x 1200.
I do NOT do rendering, video editing, gaming, or any other graphic intensive applications
I do mostly, lots of multi-tasking writing, spreadsheets, web surfing, email, and full screen u-tube videos.
Am a little confused as to which expansion slots should to use, and how to use Expansion Slot Utility to set up an optimal PCI Express profile for:
    Two Cinema HD 23displays, initially.
Three Cinema HD 23 diplays, ultimately.
This is what I have set up now:
Or should I move the 2nd card to slot 4 and select the first alternate, Thus giving me a x16 lane for first card and a x8 lane for the second card?
However, I assume that when I get my 3rd display, I would use the 3rd Alternate profile, thus giving me three x 8 lanes?
Thanks very much for any advice

    Regarding the ATI 5770
Apple does not recommend the Apple-firmware 5770 for the oldest Mac Pro models simply because when the card was introduced, the older Models of Mac Pro were already discontinued. It installs and works perfectly -- just a little slower on the Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 due to PCIe 1 slots. Drivers are in 10.6.5 and later.
To run displays wider than 1920 wide, you must use Dual-Link DVI, so called because the data conductors are doubled to reduce the bit clock rate for wide displays.
The scarce resource in the Apple-firmware 5770, as in the PC-only 5770, is power to run the driver circuitry in the converters from Mini DisplayPort to other "legacy" interface standards such as DVI. You MUST use ACTIVE, POWERED converters for this job, or suffer only two of the screens lighting up. This is made clear in ATI/AMD literature as well as Apple literature.
You can use the fairly expensive Apple Dual-Link converter, which picks up its power from a USB lead. There are also third-party converters available. Some of these are sold on Amazon. Read and re-read all this information carefully, as it is very easy to confuse ACTIVE and not, Dual-Link and not, Mini DisplayPort and regular DisplayPort, and these sites do not make it easy to distinguish:

My MacBook Pro 15-inch with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors just failed. Do you guys know if apple still fixes them?

I tried last week. The best I could get was a discount on the repair, but the damage to my logic board by the GPU caused it to no longer boot. The program ended in December last year, but it has been extended in the past.
If you have no other damage you might be able to get a flat rate tier 1 repair if you are in the USA.

  • Does the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro 2.6-GHz version have the Nvidia GeForce GT 750M discrete graphics or is it just the 2.3-GHz version?

Topic title pretty much says it all. I want the 15-inch 2.6-GHz version with the Nvidia GeForce GT 750M discrete graphics or is it just the 2.3-GHz version?

Yes, I have. The hardware specs are shown for this model, but when you dig further into purchasing it, it doesn't list the graphics cards under "hardware".
My main concern came from reading somewhere (maybe on this forum) that some guy said he chose the 2.3 version so he could get the discrete graphics. I thought all 15inch 2.3 and above had both:
    Intel Iris Pro Graphics
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M

  • [GeForce 6] NVIDIA GeForce 6600 512

    Doe's Nvidia support the "Diablotek NVIDIA GeForce 6600 512"  model NE+66000+TD51-PM8543 ?
What new drivers support the 512 memory?
I had posted about this before but didn't any replies except my own that I had found the basic product info. I've seen these cards at different sellers locations but beyond sales there is no extra support. Specifically from NVIDIA.
All help would be good. Also the card with the original driver pack works GREAT.
Also WHY does the Package say "SLI supported" and yet there is NO SLI bridge connection? Did NVIDIA make a mistake and send out a bad card or just a bad package?

I guess the mistake is from Diablotek, about SLI issue, and personally I don't like Diablotek products. And I guess you should stick to the driver pack, if it works don't touch it.
