Nvidia GTX 400 cards and CS5 (GTX285 is no longer current)

Given that NVidia has now released the GTX470 and GTX480 cards, is it reasonable to assume they will work well with Premiere Pro CS5?  The GTX285 is outdated at this point and not really worth purchasing when compared to the GTX470.
Does the new Mercury engine run pretty much on any of the newer Nvidia cards, with only the 285 mentioned because of lack of time to test all permutations?  I can't imagine it wouldn't run on a GTX470 or GTX 260 system for example, since the drivers are the same for most of the newer Nvidia cards.

there is a simple text file inside the PREMIERE program directory which LISTS graphics card that can be used with MERCURY all you need to do is edit this list to include the card you want to use.
Providing your graphics card has at least 1gb and it is enabled to use CUDA the Mercury engine can be HARDWARE enabled by simple editing of this file
c:program files\adobe\adobe premiere pro cs5\cuda_supported_cards.txt
there is also a program which SNIFFS out which graphic card you have this is
c:program files\adobe\adobe premiere pro\ cs5gpusniffer.exe
just use this program and note carefully how the name of your card is listed then add this name EXACTLY as it appears to
c:program files\adobe\adobe premiere pro cs5\cuda_supported_cards.txt the easy solution is to CUT and PASTE the name
IF YOU UPDATE Premiere at any time then it automatically overwrites cuda_supported_cards.txt to its original state so you will then need to manually enter your graphic card name again inside this simple text file.
I am running MERCURY HARDWARE ENABLED RENDERING using a humble 9800gt nVidia card but you need to realize that not all cards which run will give you 100% compatibility with all the filters and effects which Premiere can apply ...probably Adobe have severely limited the list to cards which have been extensively tested...
hope this is helpful to you....in reality a fairly broad range of CUDA enabled nVidia cards CAN be used with Mercury Hardware enabled.
In a nutshell  make sure your nVidia card has been CUDA enabled by running CUDA installation software then edit cuda_supported_cards.txt which in a WIN7 installation is found in c:program files\adobe\adobe premiere pro cs5\ if your are running another operating system then it might be located in a slightly different place but you can always do a search..........these details also apply to a SNOW LEOPARD system but obviously these files cs5gpusniffer.exe
and cuda_supported_cards.txt
providing your card is on the list in cuda_supported_cards.txt and it has at least 1gb ram then it should work OK
Adobe are simply being very cautious with regard to thoroughly testing cards before they list them as compatible.

  • Best brand of nVidia GTX 285 card?

Now that I've changed my mind, and decided to get ready to someday buy an HD camcorder, I'm looking at the various brands of nVidia GTX 285 cards to use with CS5... with prices ranging from $370 to $450
The top brands seem to be EVGA $390-$430 and BFG $370-$400 and XFX $390-$450 and GIGABYTE $370 @Newegg
Is one of these brands better than the others?
Note that I do NOT believe in over-clocking, so I am ONLY going to consider a brand + model that uses the standard clock speed as specified on the nVidia web site

brand is unimportant to a point
look at GHz and memory speeds some sell factory OCed
also warranty. some have lifetime, if i recall BFG, XFX and EVGA?
i prefer Zotac as they tend to be faster for less.

  • Graphics Cards and CS5?

Hello there I am currently in the process of purchasing a new notebook as I may be going into graphics design this fall.  I assumed CS5 was a graphic card intensive program.  Other places on the net some people say a beefy graphics card is not necessary for CS5 as it would not really affect performance, but a beefy processor and RAM is a must.  So can I get a verdict, would Intel  interated GMA cards be terrible to run CS5 with, or would performance be unaffected?  Plus I'm kinda confused with the whole OpenGL thing, I've been reading it's not necessary and CS5 runs better with it off?

    For OpenGL see this:  http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_kb404898_en-us
And this lists tested graphics cards: http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_cpsid_83117_en-us0
With a laptop you need a discrete graphics card (not on board graphics sharing RAM).
Also lots of RAM and the biggest HDD you can get. (Preferably two).

  • NVIDIA card and CS5

Hello, which newest NVIDIA cards work best with CS5?  The video cards listed for NVIDIA are old...
    thanks,
    Craig

Not sure what you are really asking. All of them "work", given you have installed them correctly, but "best"? It's pretty much a moot point, at least with AE. It uses OpenGL so sparingly, it's really irrelevant. Every contemporary card will fullfill these requirements. You could throw in a 3 year old card from the 20 bucks budget tray and you'd see no difference to a 400 buck higher-end one. That pretty much applies not only to AE, but to some extent to Photoshop and all otehr programs. The only notable exception here would be Premiere Pro if you want to use the Mercury playback engine, but if you don't - well, save some money, buy at best a mid-range card.

  • Installed Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 card and am unable to open PSCS5.

After install with current drives for card PS will not open. I cannot get to preferences to chg. GTU which is checked to unchecked to see if this is the prob. Have ??? Nvidia - no help there as they refer back to Adobe. Checked Adobe Support but no help there that I could find. The Raedon card that I ordered with the MacPro worked fine but needed additional speed in rendering as I work on very lg files. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know what additional info from me is needed. (All Master Suite apps open except PS and InDesign.) Thank you.

PS stopped at the very beginning of opening- no pref.,etc were read and the spinning ball continued until I force quit PS. After reading another discussion- "Photoshop Crashes" the response from c.pfaffenbichler held the key to getting PS to open. For now all is as it should be. I reset some of the pref. and have not run into any problems. I have not worked on the InDesign prob. but if cannot get it resolved will go to the correct forum for help. Thank you.

  • PS6 Video using NVIDIA GTX 680 card in 2009 Mac Pro OS 10.9.4- slow.

    Hi,
I just put a GTX 680 in my juiced up Mac Pro, replacing the original NVDIA 120... and the speeds in PS6 doing video seem to be exactly the same as before..... What are the settings I should have in preferences? Do I need a driver or anything? Looking in the graphics card part of PS6 prefs, it seems to be registering the 680..... and everything works... but I see no difference in any speed.
    Any advice?

    Hi,
I've done all the preferences I can find online.
If I turn "use Graphics processor" to "off"... it seems to make no difference to the video speeds- playback, export...
Have I just wasted $700 on the GTX 680?
I'm running Photoshop CS6 Extended.... does this mean the videon editing does NOT use the GPU?
Please offer some insight, advice or information...
    Thanks

  • I installed a NVIDIA QUADRO K2000 card and downloaded the most current drivers. AE does not accept

Can anyone offer a solution for this? I installed a NVIDIA QUADRO K2000 graphics card. I downloaded the latest drivers for the card. AE reports that this GPU is incompatible.  This is one of recommended listed cards for CS6. Any suggestions?

    > This is one of recommended listed cards for CS6.
Where did you get that information? That card is not on this list:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/tech-specs.html
What is the exact message that you're referring to when you say that After Effects "reports that this GPU is incompatible"? Is it just saying that it won't use this GPU for the CUDA acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer? If so, the only thing that you'd be missing is GPU acceleration of one feature.
See this page for details of how the GPU is used in After Effects:

  • Black Screen (source and preview) when using GPU acceleration (CUDA) [NVidia GTX 780M]

    Hi guys!
I am running Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 on Windows 7 (Ult) on a machine equipped with NVidia GTX 780M (4 GB VRAM) graphics card. The source and the preview monitors are both black if I select GPU accelerated rendering. There is a yellow bar above the timeline clips, I can hear the sound tracks, but there is no image. If I choose the Software Only rendering (CPU) then I do see the image as well, but the real-time playback and rendering times are awful!
At first, the application would not allow me to use the GPU acceleration using NVidia’s CUDA processing. Once I entered my video card name in the “cuda_supported_cards.txt” file in the Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 folder I was able to choose between Mercury Playback Engine Software Only and Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration CUDA.
I tried downgrading the video card driver to the previous stable version and reinstall Pr – no go. How do I make Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 work with my NVidia GTX 780M video card?
    Your insight is appreciated!
P.S. I used to work on a different machine equipped with NVidia GTX 670M card (which is also missing from the officially supported Pr CS6 cards list) and I never had any issues of this nature with that laptop.

    Hi there,
As stated before, I had the same problem. Apparantly the solution for me was to check the Nvidia settings. My setup has both an onboard GPU and a Nvidia GPU (on purpose specifically for video editing and gaming). Normally the system should switch to Nvidia automatically. However, the Nvidia settings for Premiere where set to favor the onboard GPU. After changing this. everything works fine again!
    kind regards. Bart

  • Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky after resintall of operating system and CS5

PROBLEM: Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky
This had NOT been an issue prior to reinstalling the operating system and all software.  I have read numerous articles on the forums and have tried everything I can find...with no results.
STEPS TAKEN TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM:
I have scoured the articles here http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=choppy%20video&cat=support&pr oduct=premierepro and others at Cretive Cow
I have installed all updates for CS5 Master Collection, immediately following a fresh install of the operating system and SC5 Master Collection.
I have ensured that sequence settings match resolution and frame rates of footage - the problem persists.
I have tested by importing both standard def AVI files created from tape and high def SONY MP4 files - the problem persists.
I have ensured the latest Video drivers are installed (clean installation selected, so that the Windows default would be removed) - the problem persists.
I have tried the 3D settings in NVIDIA control panel | Program Settings tab... selected Adobe Premiere Pro from the drop down menu | and chaged 'Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration from the value of 'Multiple Display performance' to the value of 'single display performance'; although, I ran two monitors before using this latest NVIDIA video driver and I didn't experience this jerky footage issue - the problem persisted after affecting that change; so, I switched it back.
Since I have 96 GB of RAM, I don't use a pagefile.  A zero MB page file is the same setting I had prior to rebuilding the C:  Regardless of whether I have a pagefile or not, the problem persists.
I have tried creating a fresh user profile, where the user profile is created on the C: drive by default; and, where I left it there on C: to test for the jerky playback in a new PrPR project  - the problem persists.
Regarding the C: (system drive) and why I reinstalled everything, it had become unstable and was locking up.  I ran DISK ERROR CHECKING with the FIX parameter and the system was still locking up on me.  Keep in mind that the System drive is a solid state drive.  Anyhow, I had no choice but to dive in and reinstall everything.  I wiped the system partition of the SSD using quick format and started installing the operating system.  Now, I've read the CLAIM that this cuases performance issues; but, the only place I see issues is in the video monitor playback in PrPr.  Everything else - Office applications...printing...browsing the Internet...works just fine, everything is responsive, whereas, I couldn't do ANYTHING with it before.

    I'VE RESOLVED THE PROBLEM!
    PREFACE:
OK, I am hoping that through this week-long Operating-System-and-Software-reinatalltion excerise of mine, I have revealed something that everyone -- whom have been cursing Adobe over -- can apply to their systems to resolve this jerky video problem within PremierePro CS5 (and quite possibly other versions, too).
If you've read my post above, you've seen all the steps I've taken to resolve the problem.  I've read many posts, some of which have mentioned  hardware upgrade / opitmization steps that one may take to enhance performance, and hopefully resolve the problem.  I've read where people have taken these steps and have still experienced the problem...and then they curse Adobe.  Fer-shame, fer-shame, fer-shame! (nod to Gomer Pyle).
In my case, I knew it wasn't an Adobe issue, as it had worked flawlessly before; and, it wouldn't require a hardware upgrade or reconfigureation, as my system is completely maxed out with two processors, a system drive and a hardware RAID5 array, a CUDA-suported nVIDIA 4800 FX card, and 96 GB of RAM.  bla bla bla, puke...whatever.  Bottom line is this:
It's not a software issue.  It's not and Adobe issue; and Gawd no!  It's NOT a PC vs. Mac issue!  HA HA.  The software had worked swimmingly well prior to the reinstallation / 'lobotomy' I perfomed on the system drive.
    SOLUTION FOR ME:
Download and install the updated drivers for the motherboard.  Mine is an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC.  Intel has an INTEL DRIVER UPDATE UTILITY which automatically scaned my Intel system and identified drivers which needed updating.  A very handy, time-saving tool!!!  Here's the URL: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu
The scan revealed two Intel drivers needing an update:
    Intel Chipset
    Wired Networking
    and one non-intel driver:
    Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-fi
I downloaded and installed these three drivers, rebooted, and tested PremierePro, and was extatic to find this resolved the problem.
If you have a motherboard from another manufacturer, then you may want to navigate over to their wibsite to locate chipset and other updated drivers for your motherboard.
    ROOT CAUSE:
While Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate was able to install certain default drivers during the Operating System installation (keeping in mind that this was done on an Intel Solid State Drive that I formatted using Quick Format) these default chipset drivers apparently weren't current and were ultimately the root cuase of the jerky video playback within PremierePro CS5.
    Peace

  • Nvidia Gtx 650 ti boost vs Nvidia Gtx 580

    Hi everybody,
I have an hard question about nvidia gtx video cards.
The nvidia gtx 650 ti boost is adeguate for editing video in fullHD with Premiere Pro Cs6 ?
I have chosen this video card because the price is very interesting: "only" 150 € (more or less)
Another question: is it adeguate for sporadically editing whit After Effects Cs6 ?
I have compared the gtx 650 ti boost with the gtx 580. The second is more more powerful, but the price is 450 € (more or less). I have found the gtx 580 used at 200 €.
Question: Which is the better choice? gtx 650 ti boost new or gtx 580 used (and maybe overclocked)?
    Thanks.
    Reference:
    gtx 650 ti boost http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-650ti-boost/specifications
    gtx 580 http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-580/specifications

Software components? I use only Premiere and After Effects.
I'm sorry, I expressed myself badly.
It is clear that the 580 is faster than the 650 but my question is: the 650 is powerful enough? I don't pay 200 Euro for a "insufficient" video card.
The second question is if the used grafic card is a good choice.
    Thank you so much.
PS: the configuration of the system is:
    Intel i7 920 (8M, 2.66 -> 2.93 Ghz)
RAM 12 GB triple channel @ 1066 Mhz
    Motherboard: Asus p6t

  • Mac Pro Locked Up and Now  One Video Card and Audio Not Working

Last night, my Mac Pro totally locked up to the point I had to power it off to get it to do anything. When restarted, one of my video cards and my audio are no longer working. I have dual monitors so tried switching the connections to see if it was the monitor and that was not the problem.
I tried doing a formal shutdown after the restart and this also did not clear up my problem.
Everything was working fine prior to the lockup. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

If you've added RAM and are using the nVidia 9400m video driver, you may be using incompatible RAM

  • Graphics card and CD problems

    Hello,
I recently partitioned my hard drive into two primary partitions and installed Solaris 9 x86 on one of them.
The first problem I had was kdmconfig. I have an nVidia GeForce4 graphics card, and it was not listed - only up to geforce3 was listed. I tried that, but the test did not work. I got an error (something about InitScreen and SUNWnvidia). I eventually chose the topmost option (16 colors at 640x480) and that one tested fine, but obviously, its a horrible display. How would I get a Solaris driver for my GeForce4? I believe I would need it on a floppy (or a series of floppies) so that I can choose Add Driver and use the floppies. However, I do not know where to find these drivers.
Secondly, after it prompted me to insert CD2, it gave me an error saying CD2 could not be read. I burned the CD2 image at 20x (rather than the normal 40x) and it still gave me this error. How do I get past it?
Finally, Solaris has blocked my entrance to Windows XP. When I start up my computer, I get a SunOS blue-background with two choices: the Solaris partition and my Windows partition. Choosing my windows partition gives me an error (saying some sig file could not be found) and choosing the Solaris partition starts the device configuration manager which eventually leads me to the desktop login screen (black and white, horrible resolution). How do I get to Windows XP?
Thanks a lot for your help.

I am having a similar issue. Let me know if you find a solution.
