Nvidia GTX + Quadro for Premiere and Speedgrade - is it possible?

Hi,
I have a workstation with Nvidia GTX 470 GPU. I am doing a lot of color grading work for my projects and I am considering to purchase HP Dream Color 10-bit monitor. As GTX don't output 10-bit, I am thinking about purchasing a Quadro GPU just for output preview purpose.
Does anyone know is it possible to put those two cards together in the same PC (Windows 8, 64-bit) without issues? If so, can I use cheapest Quadro GPU, for example K420? The main idea is using GTX as workhorse for rendering and live timeline preview and Quadro for 10-bit preview on HP Dream Color.
Thanks,
Tom

Generally it is not advised by nVidia as they do not test having two different families of drivers running at the same time.  That does not mean that it would not work but there have been reports of problems in the forums.   Of course if anyone is successful it generally does not get reported.
You might have to consider removing the GTX 470 and getting something like the K2200 with a few more CUDA cores than your GTX 470 and also 10-bit output.

  • Best workflow for DSLRs and Speedgrade / Premiere?

Can anyone suggest a workflow for DSLR footage using Premiere and Speedgrade? I would like to be able to roundtrip and do a light grade on clips and sequences before completed the offline edit. Is this possible? I know in the video tuts it seems to work for Red footage, but I couldn't get it to work for me with my 5d mark iii footage. It's all new to me having recently switched to Adobe from FCP and also to DSLR from camcorders. Thanks

Speedgrade isn't designed to go pre-edit, so right now there's no dynamic link with the other CS6 apps. It's intended to sit post-edit in a classical film studio workflow, with Sg ingesting only the final edited frames and exporting your production masters.
If you "send" a Premiere Pro sequence to Sg you will render out a single DPX image sequence (including effects and transitions, and without any references to edit markers or original filenames) and so importing that back into Pr would flatten your entire timeline to a single clip. Any changes to the Pr timeline and you'd have to do it all over again.
You can export an EDL from Pr and use that in Sg to read the native footage (provided it's compatible*), but  grading is not stored into the original files so it won't re-appear in your Pr timeline unless you manually re-import.
If you want to use Sg pre-edit, the options are:
Grade all your footage before ever touching Pr, export everything to lossless video or image sequences and work with those, forgetting about the original files completely (you'll need a bunch of disk space and hopefully a MOS shooting pattern, as your audio will be split out).
Grade a sample of every clip you're using, then save a Look for each one. Export the Looks as 3D LUT files (.cube) and use a plugin to apply them to your clips. Right now there's no official plugin for Premiere (Magic Bullet LUT Buddy isn't certified past CS5) but After Effects can apply both the .cube and the .look files via the "Apply Color LUT" effect. Note that some changes in Sg are not included in the Look, such as the choice of color space and tone curve, so what you see in Sg may not be what you get back in Pr.
I'm not downplaying the abilities of Sg, but it's a colorist's tool and doesn't sit very well in the CS6 unified concept of "one person can make a movie". It helps to think of it in terms of the union system in Hollywood - an editor never grades and a colorist never edits, so their tools look completely different, work completely different, and the electronic conversation only goes in one direction.
*Sg was designed with digital cinema in mind so it doesn't work with interlaced footage, plus it generally assumes you're feeding it log so be careful when picking defaults. It's one occasion where something like the Cinestyle fake-log profile for Canon DSLRs comes in handy.

  • Support for nvidia gtx-980 for after effects and premiere

Can someone tell me when Adobe is going to give CUDA support for the Nvidia gtx-980 video cards in After Effects and Premiere CS6?  I purchased this card specifically for those programs, and DON'T want to do a subscription to Creative Cloud.  I purchased the Master Collection through Adobe, and understand that CC versions support it.  Why can't Adobe issue a btch file or update to include these cards.  I am aware of OpenGl support, but I would like to add my new card.  I also just purchased an i7-4790K to upgrade from i5-3570 to help speed up rendering, but would really like to see the video card supported.

    The simple answer is no.

  • Video Card for Premiere and Photoshop?

Hi.   I thought I was reasonably well set up when I got an nVidia GeForce GTX 470 for video editing.   Unfortunately life throws us curve balls...
I'm upgrading one of my current monitors to a much better quality IPS-panel monitor.   At the top of my list is the NEC PA271W-BK-SV.  To use it at it fullest, apparently you need to use its DisplayPort.   Which of course the GTX 470 does not have.   So...
I'm looking for a good quality video card that has both CUDA support and a DisplayPort that supports a full 10-bit per color display pipeline.  Right now, the only one that I can find under $1,000 is the NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800.  Anyone have experience with this one?   Better options at a reasonalble price point?
    Thanks and regards,
    Dan.

    Harm,
That looks like an absolute winner!   Many thanks!!!

  • Geforce GTX model for Premiere Pro CS 6

    Hello all,
I might overstress this topic a bit, cause it is probably asked too many times already.
Please, be patient with me ;-). But I'm a bit confused, what I found on the community board so far, or the responses are already too old. The official Adobe hardware compatibilty for PP CS 6 is not very helpfull as well, because the list seems to be a bit too old.
I'm starting to look into setting up a complete new Windows-System and want to use Premiere Pro CS 6, not CC or newer.
I'm looking for a Nvidia Geforce GPU card, that is on the market and can make use of the GPU accelleration within Premiere Pro CS 6. It should run stable, without a lot of trouble or limitations because the GPU is too new and therefore not fully supported by PP CS 6.
First I thought, about the relatively new GTX 970, but I've red in this community post that there is still some trouble with getting Premiere Pro to use the GPU acceleration. For me, even it's not so clear about which PP versions they talk during the post. And it looks like, that there are some limitations, what'S possible with this card.
I think currently about a system with the following components:
    - Intel i7 CPU with 6 cores either with Haswell-architecture (2011-3 Socket) or Ivy Bridge (2011-Socket)
    - 16 GB DDR4 Memory (for a start)
    - Samsung 850 SSD disks.
    - Windows 7 64-bit
I'd be very grateful, somebody could share his/her experience and name some GPU models, that fit into the system and is capable to make use of the GPU acceleration feature from Adobe PP CS 6 and of course are still on the market.
    Thanks in advance.

    @ cc_merchant:
Yes it is indeed very confusing for a newbie, when you don't find newer cards on the official Adobe compatibility list. That's exactly my point. I don't want to spend so much money for something, that won't work in the end.
    So thank you.
I'm looking for NVIDIA GPU models, that deliver good performance ( for a reasonable price below 500 USD) and that community members use successfully in their environment together with Adobe Premiere Pro 6 and may be are able to give some good advice how to successfully bring it to work.
    Bill Gehrke,
I'm very interested in your experience with a GTX 970 card, cause that would be my first choice. Mainly on the great power consumption/ performance ratio. But here in the community I've seen a post where a lot of people struggled to get this card running because of the new GPU architecture with Maxwell CUDAs.
That's, why I thought to take GTX 760 or 770 and overcome the issue, that were reported there. Just to be on the safe side.
Can you post a link or explain me, how you configured Premiere Pro 6 and the GTX 970?
Are there still any disadvantages with this new card with Premiere Pro 6?
Would be great, you could let me know.
Thanks again for all other posts so far.

  • Nvidia GTX 980 Slow Playback and Rendering on 36 Core Dual Xeon

I have a Dual Xeon e5 2699 v3 machine (18 cores per CPU; 36 physical; 72 Logical).  I am processing Red Dragon footage at 6K resolution and 60 Frames per Second.  I have a Red Rocket-X card as well as Four (4) GTX-980 Nvidia GPUs.  When I try to use the Mercury Playback engine the performance is pitiful.  When I select CPU/Software only I get over 120 fps.  The Adobe CC software ONLY uses One of the Two CPUs installed on the system at any one time, it is like it doesn't see the other CPU even though Windows acknowledges that both are there and working (Cinema 4D and Cinebench use all 72 logical cores and will max them all out).  However, even with the Adobe CC Software only seeing 1 of 2 CPUs, the CPU playback is still way faster than the Mercury Playback/CUDA version.  This makes no sense to me sense the GTX-980s are the fastest/newest cards from Nvidia.  I have read that Premiere CC will only use one GPU for playback but will use multiple cards for renders.  HOWEVER, when rendering GPU-z says that each of my cards is working at less than 25% of capacity.  The rest of the system is NOT the bottle neck, I have 256Gb of DDR4 RAM, along with 12-1Tb SSDs attached to a 12 Channel 12Gb/s e-SATA card with 8Gb of RAM on the card.  I am getting sustained transfers on the RAID of over 2 Gigabytes per second.
I have invested a lot in this machine in an effort to save rendering time.... Adobe's recommendation for multiple CPUs and Multiple Graphics cards don't seem to matter as my render times are no faster than they were using FCP-X on a 2010 12 core MacPro Tower.
I hope it is just a driver or programming issue that relates to the 2699's and the GTX980 being so new???
    Any Help would be appreciated,
    Michael

    Bill,
Thank you for making the time.  I followed your instructions, great little piece of software.  Here is a screen shot when I ran my test...
As you can see even on your test, only 1 CPU is being used by Premiere.  The results from the benchmark were uploaded under the computer name RedShredder (I use it to edit and render Red Dragon 6k footage).
The results from you output file are as follows:  "32","44","8","206",Premiere Version:, 8.2.0.65
I couldn't register at the site but will try again later.
My concern is that no matter what I do Premiere and the entire Creative Cloud ONLY see ONE CPU on my Dual Xeon system.  Sometimes it will run on the other one and you can force it to by changing the processor affinity selection but no matter what, even if you click all cores on both CPUs it will still pick one and just run on that processor.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Michael

  • New Videocutsystem for Premiere and AE - Hardware - Software

    Hi,
we use a XMG Schenker Notebook with Intel i5 and GT660M for our Adobe Creative Cloud.
Becaurse our fast crowing videoproduktionvolume we need a seperate system. Video exports always brings the Notebook to the 100% limit and slows down all other processes.
    What we have till now:
    Creative Cloud License ; )
    What we need:
A seperate System that is fast in videoediting, cutting, rendering and export.
The videofootage is comin from Canon EOS 5D MK III, 600D and Nikon D7000, sometimes GoPro 3. All in 1080, 24fps (sometimes 50/60fps).
Adobe After Effects is used for damn simple intros and effects, no big show but running often at the same time with Premiere.
Premiere CC is used for inspect the files, cut, render and export the final results.
    What we know:
I got basic knowledge and an idea what could fit after research in communities like slashcam and a helpfull call with Adobe technical support.
    And - we don't buy Macs ; )
    Ideas & Questions:
    Storage:
    128gb SSD OS, Premiere, AE
    256gb SSD actual projects
3TB internal BackUp + NAS and Server for Backup the final results later.
1TB+ External BackUp directly after recording till project is finished.
Which SSDs and HDDs should we buy?
Where to but which Cache etc. files for more speed?
    OS:
    Windows 7 or Windows 8?
    64Bit for sure?!
    RAM:
Technical support said 8gb is enough, more than 1600MHz can't be used.
We thought about 16GB 1600 - so which one to buy?
    CPU, MainBoard, Grafics, special Videocards:
Hardest topic for us. There are cards like Quadro FX or special optimized "cutting-cards" for Premiere. These cards take work away from the CPU, so maybe a slower one can be used here. But is this saving money and time or mostly nice to have? We aren't Hollywood... and it's not our goal.
Display is a DELL U2711 (or the next gen model, or something similar). 2560x1440, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort etc.
We need help with picking the right CPU on the right MoBo in combination with the right grafiXs card : )
    Costs:
Without display it should go around 1000-2000 Euros. Focus on the next 2-3 Years without upgrading - if this in realistic in videoproduction?
I know Quadro FX fit's easily this range alone... but maybe there is an ultimative reason to spend 3000Euros for the whole system...?
Thanks a ton for your help!

Can anyone help me finding a new configuration with the same budget but with new-recent hw components?

Double the RAM to 32 GB at a minimum.
Use a full size case, not a mid-size.  You'll get better air circulation and have room for expansion.
Add a couple more hard drives.

  • New Nvidia Graphics Cards for Premiere GPU Acceleration

Hi! I'm looking for a new laptop. Under the list of the cards usesd for GPU Acceleration in Premiere (http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/tech-specs.edu.html), none of the new GTX 700m's are listed. Is the list of acceptable GPUs out of date and the 700s do work, or do the 700s really not work? Thanks!

    Hi Chris,
For Premiere Pro CC we made some chnages to our GPU support. See this post by Al Mooney.
Also, some customers may be aware that in the past there was a not-so-secret way of enabling non-supported GPUs by the ‘hacking’ or removal of a text file. This is no longer necessary in Premiere Pro CC. As long as you have a reasonably modern card with at least 1GB of VRAM, you will still be able to enable that card in the Project Settings dialog. A warning message will appear letting you know that your card has not been certified by Adobe, but once that dialog is clicked through you can use your GPU. The team does try to certify as many GPUs as possible, but we can’t test everything, so this is a way to let you decide if you’re happy using an untested configuration.

    Hi,
    i use 2 Nvidia GTX680 cards. 1 with 4 and the other with 2 GB V-RAM
For Resolve i want put the displays in the 2GB card for GUI and let the 4 GB card for GPU use only.
How does this setup work in Premiere. Is Premiere usinh the card where the displays are pluged in? Or does it use the other or maybe both?
I cant find any informations about that
    Maybe someone can help

this should be moved here Hardware Forum
i believe premiere will try to use both video cards, you can check with GPU-Z while working/rendering in premiere.

  • Can I create a custom location for Premiere and AME presets?

Our institution has volatile user accounts meaning that all user specific preferences, presets and files are deleted on log off.
However I would like to make some custom Premiere sequence presets and AME export presets available to all users by default.
Can anyone suggest a way to store these presets in a non-user specific location and still have Premiere and AME locate them?
Alternatively if anyone can suggest a way of packaging up these presets and copying them into the appropriate user locations on logon that would also be of interest!?

  • What kind of computer do I need for Premiere and AE CS5.5?

    Hello everyone,
I want to build a strong computer that will be able to work fluently with full-HD layers in Premiere and After Effects CS5.5, and Avid Media Composer 5.5.
My budget is around 1800-2000$ while I don't need any other hardware.
I'll be very happy for any kind of advise.
    Thank you very much!

The reason for the question is the upcoming SB-E CPU, but that is outside your budget.
Look at Benchmark Results to see what kind of systems are good for editing. Also press the Overview button at the top of the forum page and read the articles listed under the FAQ section.

  • Dynamic Link for Premiere and After Effects CS4 with Titles

I've created a Rolling Title in Premiere Pro CS4.  I'd like to create a Dynamic Link to bring the title into After Effects CS4 to add effects that will show up in Premiere.  I've watched a few video tutorials on Dynamic Link and read the documentation and tried a variety of permutations but can't seem to get this done.
Also saw something in these forums about problems using Dynamic Link with Titles (as opposed to regular clip??)
And something about Premiere and After Effects projects being saved together ??in same folder - is that correct?
So, could someone explain if this can be done and the right way to do it?
    Thanks

Thanks Mylenium - appreciate the quick and focused reply.
I would like to keep the benefits of the Premiere Pro Titler (to play with the length of time by stretching or squashing the Title block on the timeline; to type in time to stay on screen at end; ease in and out etc . . .).  If I do render out a png / tiff / or psd sequence with alpha, and bring that into AFX to play with.  Will I still retain the ability to use the Titler features in Premire Pro, or do I essentially have to convert it to 'regular footage' on reimport as opposed to a 'Title?"
    Thanks
