Nvidia laptop overclocking

So I'm trying to overclock my 8600m GT and much to my dismay I find that nvidia for god only knows why has locked linux laptop users out of the 'coolbits' overclocking panel.
After doing my fair share of poking around on almost every laptop overclocking website, I found no leads.
I tried using nvtuner but that also returned some sort of error when I tried it.
What really annoys me is that, under the windows drivers its easy to overclock nvidia mobile cards via rivatuner
I'd really like to be able to pull some more power off this card, but it seems like nvidia has screwed linux laptop users out of this capability.
My question then becomes, does anyone know of some sort of workaround for this?
Also, cooling wont be an issue, and I realize that overclocking a laptop is risky.
Thanks in advance

Envil wrote:Did you add Option "CoolBits" "1" to the screens section of your xorg.conf?
Using that i can access the overclocking panel in nvidia-settings just fine on my laptop (Geforce 8800M GTX)
Yea I tried that, but some of the buttons are greyed out, and when I move the panel it just resets to the original.

hi, i m going to overclock my card.  there's a MSI overclock utility in MSI's driver cd. (after install the driver, the utility will apear in display sittings) but i don't like to install MSI's driver, i download from nvidia's site.  any one know how to install that utility individually?

    leobecool,
    For the extra features:
Use notepad to make a new file and put in it what I quoted below and then save it with the .reg extension.
    Quote
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARENVIDIA CorporationGlobalNVTweak]
    "Coolbits"=dword:ffffffff
    "NvCplEnableAGPSettingsPage"=dword:00000001
    "NvCplEnableAdditionalInfoPage"=dword:00000001
    "NvCplEnableClearViewPage"=dword:00000001
Double Click on it and it will make an entry into your registry.
That will open all the extra options in the Detonator4 Drivers including the Core and RAM Speeds for your GF4.

  • How to get OpenGL 4 on an intel/nvidia laptop

    Hi,
    I have the following setup:
    A lenovo T430 with intel/nvidia graphics.
I managed to get the nvidia driver and bumblebee installed. So far I am able to run games such as L4D on my machine.
However, Metro 2033, requires OpenGL4. Right now I have the mesa-10.3.5 implementation of OpenGL, which provides OpenGL 3.0.
Can anybody give me some hints.

NVIDIA's proprietary graphic card driver doesn't depends on mesa anyhow, Mesa is used with Intel driver on your laptop.
You have Nvidia NVS 5000M Series videocard (NV5x).
    From NVIDIA Wiki article
For GeForce 8000/9000 and 100-300 series cards [NV5x, NV8x, NV9x and NVAx] from around 2006-2010, install the nvidia-340xx or nvidia-340xx-lts package, available in the official repositories.
If you are on 64-bit and also need 32-bit OpenGL support, you must also install the equivalent lib32 package from the multilib repository (e.g. lib32-nvidia-libgl, lib32-nvidia-340xx-libgl or lib32-nvidia-304xx-libgl).
Reboot. The nvidia package contains a file which blacklists the nouveau module, so rebooting is necessary.
Be sure noveau deleted from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf if you had it, I suggest you don't need it for now.

  • MSi GX623 laptop Overclock

Ok , so I got this laptop the other day. First thing I noticed was that the Turbo button overclocked the processor by 15% and after doing some research I found out that I needed bios 1.0s to be able to choose between 15%. and 20%. A few hours later and my lappy was riding on a new bios with 20% overclock. So far so good, the video card decided to make problems as well though.
The Radeon 4670 512MB DDR3 won't overclock even a MHz higher , or rather , there is no software that can recognize the damn thing. I tried Riva Tuner, AMD GPU clock tool, Overdrive (and some other which I don't remember) . Riva tuner didn't have overclocking options for this card in it, the GPU tool gave me some funny error, Atitool didn't want to start. I've been thinking of reflashing the GPU bios for a while now but one program I used to edit the bios file had some blanks and left me with a bad impression. Any and all help will be appreciated

  • [nVidia] GPU Overclock on a Geforce MX4000? (or "How much Viagra can an old man take?")

Yeah, you can laugh, but it's the card I have, and C'est la Vie.
Anyhow, without a new heatsink/cooler, how much do you think I could safely, and stably, bump up the core and memory?
Card: http://www.evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=128-A8-NV96-LX (Same heatsink in picture)
    Core: 263Mhz
    Memory: 266Mhz
It's only my second n00b question too...

Overclockability of video cards is usually highly variable, though on the plus side it's also generally safer and easier to play around with overclocking a video card than it is to play around with overclocking your CPU/RAM.  I would recommend just getting a decent GPU stress-testing utility (you can use 3dMark 03/05, although rthdribl will probably stress your GPU more, you can get it at http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/ or the 3dMark programs at www.futuremark.com), and then raising your video card core speed 5 MHz at a time until you see artifacts showing up in the stress-test, and then once you see them lower your core speed by 5 to 10 MHz, and then do the exact same thing with your RAM speed.  If done right, this should give you your maximum stable video card overclock, and it should be reasonably safe as well.

  • Problem with nvidia

hi, i bought HP 15-d056se laptop and intall all the drivers but nvidia , laptop read internal card intel HD 4000 , without nvidia graphic card , what can i do??

    Hello @nawfal,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you have a concern with the notebook. I will try to address this with you.
Looking at what you've provided, you don't have an issue with the Nvidia not being installed.
In the first screen shot, it's clearly showing that the Nvidia graphics is there. The second screenshot is moot. Your looking at the default settings for the monitor.
In dual graphics notebooks, for all "general" or low performance tasks it will use the Intel graphics driver first. The only time the Nvidia driver kicks in is when required. Some software applications or games will generally do this.
So from what you'r seeing, everything looks as it should.
If you're still worried and want to have the Nvidia updated, try this link: NVIDIA High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
I worked on behalf of HP.

  • Nvidia 8800GTX 768Mb

Hi everyone, I am planning to order a new Mac Pro to replace my recently acquired PC (which already had a lot of nice stuff in it, such as a GC Nvidia 8800GTX Overclocked, 10,000 RPM hard drives, etc.)
I 'm wondering if I could use my own Graphic Card in this new Mac Pro.
I saw that the Mac Pro could be delivered with a 8800GT Graphic Card but mine is more demanding regarding the power supply, and I can't find any reliable information about the power delivered by the Mac.
If anyone already tried the 8800GTX on a mac or knows about the power supplied, please let me know.
    thank you in advance.
    MF

    KEEP YOUR CURRENT HI-END PC!
The new MacPro graphics are lemons...actually the drivers are very, very poor.
Wait for next generation Intel Nehalem CPUs, in 3rdQ. The next MacPro may be worth if Apple decides to make it right, dedicating some resources to IT instead of iPhones and ICrappies.
Next generation willvery likely include a newer generation GPU w/HDMI ports (9xxx series is out now) and Blue Ray. Contrary to most people opinions and hopes Apple has kept MacPros very poorly upgradable and that is simply unethical for such hi end pro tools.
Keep your money! No worth at the moment.

  • Can this laptop handle Premiere?

My home tower computer used to work well with editing short, standard videos, but now I am using large HD files and my tower just can't handle them (Dell XPS420)
My boss has graciously offered to buy me a new laptop if I can find one that will handle these bigger files.
So my question is, will the HP dv7tqe series do the trick? If not, what would you suggest? (Note, it has to be HP)

  • FPS / Stuttering Issues (Overheat , Speedstep Issues ? ) MSI GE60 2PE APACHE PRO

    **EDIT**
Unable to post direct image links , please ad HTTP:// before links
Good evening Fellow Gamers and Adepts.
I come to you tonight with a serious doubt , which has rattled me for a while , and after some intense troubleshooting i have came up blank.
    Here's the deal , as stated , i have a MSI GE60 2PE apache Pro
Now , playing cs go has been the bane of my existence, i am aware there are heating issues with this laptop , but those have been fixed by a Thermal repaste, a cooling pad and the backplate removed.
Now i have no more throttling of CPU , and GPU appears to handle fine aswell; the thing is i keep having MASSIVE lag spikes in CS:GO , and apparently they are being cause by CPU issues.
    Image for clarification .
(Standart situation , notice the relative low fps for a old game)
    imgur.com/cJ2Ly80
After a few seconds the following occurs
    imgur.com/cJ2Ly80,27y1P5C,aq30R4r#1
Notice the fps drop and the CPU frequency percent alert in game
another shot of this in console so you can see the several occurrences
    imgur.com/cJ2Ly80,27y1P5C,aq30R4r#2
now keep in mind that these are the lowest game settings, in Fullscreen windowed mode , if i even CONSIDER putting it on standart fullscreen i get unplayable jitterness and fps that range from 10 to 80 , all in a second.
Now , as i have stated i have fooled around and disabled speedstep in the bios , meaning that the cpu is always at 100%, seeing i have removed the backplate , throttling is not an issue as IXT (Intel extreme tuning) can attest.
note aswell the "active core count" spikes to 4/3 in the exact moments of the stutters, meaning that both problems should , in theory , be connected .

can ANYONE give me an ideia of whats going on ? i rather enjoy playing with games with friends , but this is driving me up the wall..
Lastest NVIDIA / Laptop drivers installed ; Bios Updated and EC firmware aswell.
Thank you for your time guys x)

  • CPU Usage Question between Premier and Media Encoder

    Hey guys,
Here is the question. I just built a new machine with the following specs:
    Intel i7 2.66GHz process overclocked to 3.2GHz
    12GB Memory
    Nvidia 260 Overclocked video card.
When I export a video from Adobe Premier into Media Encoder, all 8 cores peg out at 100% and thus my CPU temp get hot really quick (78 - 80 degrees Celsius)
Now if I take the same original video file and just drag it into Media Encoder, my 8 cores only show about 24-40% usage and the temp only gets to around 55-60 degrees Celsius.
What is causing such a big difference in CPU usage? I'm afraid to use Adobe Premier as it causes the CPUs to max out everytime. I want to edit my videos, but as stuck with just using AME on the original files.

I suspect its simply because in the first case Pr and AME are both running. In the later, just ame loading the Pr project. In the forst case two projects are running simultaneously, the one in Pr and a temp copy in AME.
But more troublesome to me is why youve built a system that cant be maxed out. IN editing, we Want the CPUs to peg to process as fast as possible. IMHO; You should re-think the design of your workstation if it overheats so easily.

  • MSI GT70 0ND-219US Bios settings for fastest cpu, and maybe gpu performance?

What is the best BIOS's settings (I have the unlocked BIOS)
For overclock cpu on startup and GPU

Honestly? Stock. There's little to no performance gain overall for the CPU.
You can't change the GPU performance from the BIOS.
If you're asking these types of questions, you're probably better off not changing anything without doing a TON of research first. There's plenty of website out there that detail what you can do, and why, and how it really isn't very effective (especially in the mobile space) just because you can't increase it as much as you can on the desktop space (in some cases).
Unless you have upgraded the CPU from the 3610 that was originally installed in your laptop, overclocking is really pointless.

  • Returned defective 15.4 - wife is thinking about a 17" but...

1 week old 15 had at least 3 LEDs that were not lit, causing dark patches around the screen. ;( She was already wishing that she had the 17, so I guess it worked out.
She would hate to get a new 17" and have Apple come out with a newer version shortly after. I've checked macrumors and there is no mention of one - but what is the typical update cycle on these things? Can we expect something new very soon?
I've read that Apple might discontinue use of the nvidia chips and go to Intel? I have to wonder if the older, nvidia laptops will be coveted?
    Thanks for any insight.
    Jeff

Everything being said here is pure speculation. Apple does not release any information about unannounced products... this includes which GPU they may or may not use.
If you're looking to get a new machine, just be sure that whatever you get meets your current and future (for the amount of time you plan to keep it) needs. No matter how long you wait, a new updated version is going to be out a few months later... that's just the nature of the business.
If you decide to wait for the next refresh, you can generally track down old stock from a number of online retailers for a short while afterwards (but of course there's no guarantee of that). If you're not happy with whatever the newer offering is, you can always try to track down the previous version (usually at a reduced price if you can find one).

What's the idle temperature anyway? So here's the thing about nvidia laptop gpus. they have the "Optimus Technology".. basically it enables your system to switch from integrated to the discrete depending on use.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/optimus_technology.html
this might be a noob question but are you certain you installed the laptop gpu version of the drivers? they are different from desktop drivers. I think something's also wrong with your registry.. a malware perhaps since it sounds like the optimus technology thing is not working properly. Have you tried system restore?
yes i restored my laptop already, i did almost every possible tweaks, like updating my bios,
i also used the msi gpu driver only, but still problem persist. the only thing that fixes it is by opening task manager, which switches the gpu to integrated. meaning it works properly with task manager on. is it weird right? any help?

I complete agree with that.  Just getting bored with the Opteron system. I have an insider I am getting a e6600 from for 1/2 price this week, so I was looking at boards.  Think I want to try the 680i over the 975, and while the RD600 looks like it will be a winner it's still a ways out.
MSI had stated end of December for the P6N and that time is upon us.
Honestly after the last purchase I swore I would never buy another MSI, but I kind of crave pain that way, after about a year of mods on this current board, and emails with the MSI BIOS crew I think the K8N SLI was the 2nd best Nforce 4 board made out there.  Plus it gives me another forum area to read here beside the Nvidia, and overclocking sections.
