Nvidia-lts in extra?

It's a minor thing... but... It would be reeeeeaaaallllly cool if nvidia-lts was maintained in extra. Maybe the combination of kernel-lts and nvidia is not common but I do find for my needs that the lts kernel is easier to use because vmware is pretty slow at supporting newer kernels and for me vmware is a must. I've come to the conclusion that LTS is the path of least resistance for that type of install.
I would be willing to help with it if necessary. I'm not sure who is maintaining the package in AUR but so far the package has always been updated very quickly after a release of nvidia-utils... Thanks for that whoever you are ;-)
Cheers,
Neil

I'm maintaining the nvidia-lts PKGBUILD in AUR. I could add it in extra as there are other lts modules in extra. I'll ask first on dev ML to see if it's OK with everyone.

Using an Nvidia GeForce 210 card. I had this same error in Antergos. I think I tried to uninstall nouveau and couldnt get the nvidia driver installed after, so I didnt want to break this system. Any other info needed? I didnt see this error in the troubleshooting section of the install walk-through in the wiki.

Can you switch to another terminal with Alt-Ctrl-F2? Please check the logs and systemd's journal.
Did you install nvidia or nvidia-lts?

All I wanted was to have the simplest use of the Nvidia proprietary driver.  So I followed https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … any_kernel
So what I gather from the discussion here is that this (nvidia-dkms) should only be used for custom kernels?  And the topic should be a sub topic of https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … tom_kernel?  Is that right?
    Thanks for you help.

  • ATI or NVIDIA ?

First of all, Happy New Year !
Ok now, the reason I opened this thread is to get an opinion with fellow forummers on this question which people have been asking me.
" Which is better, ATI or NVIDIA ? "
And I answered that if we are comparing these two, we need to look at how to evaluate, in terms of Value? , Performance ?, and so on..
If we look at value, ATI 4 Series apart from the4870x2, have been priced at a very reasonable figure and its price to performace ratio is very worth it.
But if we look at performance,NVIDIA's gtx200 series have shaken the earth with its new gtx295, but of course the gtx295 is the ultra high performance card which not everyone can afford. In the computer market as a whole, the one that ATI and NVIDIA will give extra attention is to the mainstream line because it holds the more percentage of user worldeide over enthusiast class user.
And if we are comparing to, we need to look at what kind of games that we are going to campare on.For ATI, of course they have an advantage if they benchmark on Half Life 2 because the game was programmed to bring the best out of ATI gpu's and the same for GTA series which was programmed best fo NVIDIA.
So ladies and gentlemen, what say you ?

Yeah but when it comes to resolution etc, it is down to the monitor ie: DVI,HDMI or VGA ?
From my point of view, I choose ATI because of the price to performance ratio as considering that not all of us are Donald Trump.
For performance yes I choose NVIDIA but nowadays, it is not down to performance anymore when we want to compare products. As a whole ATI won.

  • Nvidia versus NV: recompiling

Couple of questions regarding the Nvidia and NV drivers:
    1) Isn't the Nvidia driver (in extra/x11/nvidia) is the binary from Nvidia itself? If so, why do I keep hearing that it has to be compiled against the current kernel?
    2) The NV driver (in extra/x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv) is the open source version, correct? Does it have to be compiled against a custom kernel as well?
Currently I'm using the NV drivers:
    Section "Device"
    ### Available Driver options are:-
    ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False",
    ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz"
    ### [arg]: arg optional
    #Option "SWcursor" # [<bool>]
    #Option "HWcursor" # [<bool>]
    #Option "NoAccel" # [<bool>]
    #Option "ShadowFB" # [<bool>]
    #Option "UseFBDev" # [<bool>]
    #Option "Rotate" # [<str>]
    #Option "VideoKey" # <i>
    #Option "FlatPanel" # [<bool>]
    #Option "FPDither" # [<bool>]
    #Option "CrtcNumber" # <i>
    #Option "FPScale" # [<bool>]
    #Option "FPTweak" # <i>
    #Option "DualHead" # [<bool>]
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "nv"
    VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
    BoardName "NV43 [GeForce 6600]"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection
and I want to compile a custom kernel and I'm wondering if/why I have to recompile the NV drivers?.

"nvidia.ko" is a kernel module, so most definitely needs to be compiled for the current module, otherwise it may be unstable if it works at all. It is part-binary and part-source, but the source part needs to be recompiled.
nv is not a kernel module.
    To see the module:
    find /lib/modules -name nvidia.ko

It's working for me, I'm on 340xx nvidia drivers and using sddm+plasma. I even have nouveau installed in parallel (blacklisted).
I don't know if it makes any difference, but I'm using the -ck variant of the kernel and the nvidia driver. libgl part is still the same though:

  • NVIDIA package confusion

I'm trying to understand the Arch Nvidia packages but the wiki isn't overly clear.
Currently, I use the nvidia-173xx package with a Geforce 7800 GTX card, since, at installation, I believed that the older cards weren't supported by the Nvidia package in Extra.
However, I recently discovered that version 285.05.09 supports my card, according to the supported products tab on:
    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/linux-di … er-uk.html
So, firstly, should I ditch nvidia-173xx and revert to the main Nvidia package?
And secondly, since nvidia-173xx requires linux<3.1 due to incompatibility with xorg 1.11, presumably linux should be added to the IgnorePkg list in pacman.conf, along with the currently ignored packages below?:
    xf86-input-evdev
    xf86-input-keyboard
    xf86-input-mouse
    xf86-video-nv
    xf86-video-vesa
    xorg-server
    xorg-server-common
Once Nvidia produce a driver suitable for xorg 1.11, I'll be able to un-ignore these, and install Nvidia instead of 173xx (or even 173xx-all).  Correct?

    IMPORTANT Additional Note:
Noticed that running a diff on current xorg.conf against old backup copies shows that the change
    From:     Depth 16
    To:         Depth 24
is the more likely cause of things working now.
At some time long ago, evidently, I redid the xorg configuration and missed that one item.

I have an idea that I will be researching around for more information on.
In KDE, I remember that Opengl was used in a setting instead of NVIDIA's X Rendering (or was it direct rendering...).
With my minor knowledge of graphics cards and rendering, I came up with this:
Opengl's memory management was used in KDE, so it explains how my computer was able to handle both compositing and graphic intensive games. And that X Rendering is not good  at(or has any ability)  managing memory. So I must find a way for NVIDIA to only use Opengl.
Please correct me if I am making the wrong conclusion!
EDIT: Looking at the NVIDIA server settings again, it looks like it already uses Opengl.
Reading more from many forums, it looks like Xfce's compositing uses EXA for rendering confusing the situation just a little more.

  • [TEMP-WORKAROUND] 290 NVIdia/3.2 kernel tests I've done

It's not fixed as it is a kernel issue. Link to article in post #5.
But there is a workaround in the meantime to at least get you back up and running.
I have an up to date Arch x86_64 machine. And an NVidia GTX-560TI. Like others, today's updates broke "X" fatally, when both the new 3.2 kernel came down with the new NVidia driver family (290).
I've done some tests that may help folks smarter than me figure out what is going wrong.
    Test:
    a)  Removed nvidia, nvidia-utils, and all related NVidia packages. Handled the libgl dep issue.
    b)  Killed the xorg.conf file, removed the nvidia module from memory, and installed the xf86-video-vesa package.
A subsequent call to startx had the DE come right up (just in a lower resolution than a native driver @ 1920x1200).
    c)  Went to the NVidia site and downloaded the 285.05.09 drivers and installed the same from a true cli (I personally don't use GDM's). Allowed the NVidia drivers to create it's own xorg.conf. Dealt with the libgl issue. I know this is not Arch orthodoxy, but remember I'm trying to restore my main work system to operational status until the nvidia driver/packages/whatever get sorted out..
    d)  Used the nvidia-xconfig to create a new xorg.conf, modprobe'd the new nvidia module, then tried startx. (It's how I choose to start my DE's)
Same issue as with the 290.10 driver. The error of "screen found but no valid configuration found..." that's well documented elsewhere in the forums.
While I am a veteran Arch user, and with other distro's have built hundreds of custom kernels (and a few for Arch), that does not make me a dev. In my humble experience, this test limited the variables down to one. Now the only difference was the kernel rev of 3.2.
    At issue is:
    a)  Is the nvidia module needing to do something different with the way it interacts with the new 3.2 kernel, meaning that NVIdia itself is doing something that the 3.2 kernel doesn't appreciate?
    or
    b)  Does the kernel need an adjusted .config file before being rebuilt?
I am not smart enough to know the answer.
Right now, I've of course removed all traces of nvidia, installed libgl, and am using the vesa driver so I could at least access my DE of choice and operate (somewhat). I cannot work until the NVidia things gets sorted out as I use video editing software that requires the use if the cuda toolset.
I post this test only as a source of information that hopefully may point the dev(s) in perhaps more directions than just nvidia. In the end, it may be totally NVidia's issue (like the last time)....But when I plug in the old working drivers in, and still cannot get "X" to function.....Then I start thinking about kernel configuration/compatibility issues.
If anyone wants me to do some other tests I haven't thought of...I'm totally game for it, anything to be of help.....Just let me know what you want done and I'll do it and post the results.
    Sincerely and respectfully,
    Dave

I need: What flavor of Arch x32 or x64?
    How current?
If you are using the lts kernel, then you need to use the nvidia-lts package with it or no love between the kernel and nvidia module.
    a)  Ensure you do not have anything but the lts's api's, headers, and kernel installed. If you're missing a piece, I'd recommend installing it. If you've still got 3.2.1 stuff in your system, get rid of it.
    b)  Kill your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file. (hint : sudo)
    c)  Remove your existing nvidia kernel mod from memory
    sudo modprobe -r nvidia
    d)  pacman in the nvidia-lts stuff.
    e)  Modprobe in the new module
sudo modprobe nvidia (check my spelling, I don't know if the lts nvidia modules goes by 'nvidia' or 'nvidia-lts')
    f)  From a cli do:
    sudo nvidia-xconfig
    g) startx, or reboot, whichever you prefer........
    h)  And see if that doesn't give you back your GDM/DE.
And no this is not the only way to do things.....There may be easier ways, but being an old retired engineer...I do tend to be a bit retentive.....Others may have different suggestions just as worthy and perhaps easier. All I know is that, if your system was sitting on my desk, this is what I would do for starters.
    Dave
PS: if this doesn't do it, as this is a laptop....then I need more info on your hardware. Please do an
    lspci -v > HardwareInfo.txt
and PM me with that file, to conserve forum space and I'll then come up with a round two attempt if round one for some wierd reason doesn't solve your problem.
It was first x64 and I switched to x32 to see if it made any difference but it still kills the Xorg so I gave up. I tried LTS, different nvidia drivers plus nvidia-lts drives, intel_iommu=off didn't work. So I'm guessing I'm just out of luck and have to wait for an update.

  • Kernel26-lts hangs at booting modules

    I have kernel26 and kernel26-lts installed.
Kernel26 works good, but I think I also have this I/O issue:
    #uptime
    [...] load average: 1.29, 1.29, 1.15
To further test it I wanted to boot up kernel26-lts. But while loading the modules during bootup it just hangs. Hard reboot...
Tried it with kernel26-lts from extra and testing, makes no difference. Also started with nomodeset acpi=off noapic boot options (and all combinations of it).
When I started kernel26-lts in verbose mode, I saw a lot of data just fly by without being able to read it. This line repaeted itself a lot though:
wifi0: Interrupt, but dev not configured
So, can you give me any tips on what to do to get my kernel26-lts working? Or getting any helpful info for a bug report?

    Thanks for your reply!
I'm unfortunately not able to read any text from the kernel.log from the lts starting. There's nothing written to the kernel.log...
As kernel26-2.6.35.x is the first version with KMS working for my ATI card, I also tried disabling it by removing radeon from modules array in rc.conf. That didn't work either...

  • Safe to remove linux kernel when using linux-lts kernel?

I'm using the `linux-lts` kernel on my work machine (less reboots after updates); I know in theory it should be safe to remove the normal `linux` kernel (and it's dependencies) but does anyone know if it is safe in practice? Nothing that assumes there will always be a `linux` package because without it there couldn't be a running system?

This should be as easy to figure out, as comparing dependencies can be:
    linux-lts:
    Required By (5)
    archboot
    nvidia-lts
    r8168-lts
    virtualbox-archlinux-modules-lts
    virtualbox-modules-lts
    linux:
    Required By (15)
    archboot
    cdfs
    fcpci
    fcpcmcia
    lirc
    ndiswrapper
    nvidia
    open-vm-tools-modules
    r8168
    rt3562sta
    vhba-module
    virtualbox-archlinux-modules
    virtualbox-archlinux-modules (testing)
    virtualbox-modules
    virtualbox-modules (testing)
That might mean, most notably, that infrared ports and cdemu-driven image mounts won't work with the lts kernel (or at least should not without pulling in the normal kernel).

  • Driver nvidia geforce 680 and 760M

Hi, I read  arch Wiki to check what driver I must install for my nvidia geforce 680 and 760M but I don't understand what is the right driver. Can you say me what is the right driver?

@karol: Actually, you're wrong. 340xx is a legacy driver, delvi932905's cards aren't legacy, so no need to use a legacy driver.
@delvi932905: The mainline driver, nvidia, is for you. What exactly is unclear on the wiki? I'm asking because I don't think this could be written any clearer:
For GeForce 400 series cards and newer [NVCx and newer], install the nvidia or nvidia-lts package, available in the official repositories.
For GeForce 8000/9000 and 100-300 series cards [NV5x, NV8x, NV9x and NVAx] from around 2006-2010, install the nvidia-340xx or nvidia-340xx-lts package, available in the official repositories.
For GeForce 6000/7000 series cards [NV4x and NV6x] from around 2004-2006, install the nvidia-304xx or nvidia-304xx-lts package, available in the official repositories.
You have 680 and 760M, so clearly the first line - 400 and newer - applies to you.

  • Nvidia legacy driver

    Hello,
it seems that as of 310.x my GeForce 6150 isn't supported anymore so the latest working driver for me is 304.64-1.
Will there be a legacy branch now? Because everyone with an older GeForce will get the nvidia update via pacman -Syu
and it will install but the PC won't boot into X anymore since it can't load the modul.
    Regards,

  • What happened to Nvidia 3D effects in kdemod4.3?

Recently I re-installed Arch using the 08/2009 iso onto my P4(no hyperthreading)/AsusP4S800DXmob/ GeForce6200 desktop with HannspreeHF237 monitor.  The video card(8XAGP) and monitor were recent additions.
The prior 2mo old install updated until midAug. gave me the 3D effects.  The new install following the new wiki and my old notes did not give me the 3D stuff.  Ubu and MDK(mandriva) still did. But Ubu log files mentioned ACPI not found by nvidia after the last kernel update. So I checked the var/log for xorg and I noticed that nvidia could not find ACPI... so 3D desktop was changed to 2D.
Reading the recent posts about the nvidia driver(from extra) and my GeForce6200 having problems with 3D I said EEK!  I've been hit by the Arch rolling release engine!
Could there be a problem with the  new kernel's built-in ACPI that nvidia wasn't seeing the ACPI module it expects?  So I installed ACPID and now the kernel was  showing ACPI messages and hal loaded the acpid module.  /var/log/Xorg.0.log  shows nvidia now seeing ACPI and loading 3D.  Just to be sure I ran nvidia-xconfig( since kernel was recently upgraded) and xorg logs showed same ACPI loading. Following the log messages that AGPFastWrite and PageFlip were not used and that Freetype module doesn't exist I commented those lines from /etc/X11/xorg.conf. And now nvidia loads dri and dri2!  Go figure! ---Gotta go over the fonts wiki entries again...
So the conclusion to the tale is that yes the nvidia driver from extra(repo) works fine with my GeForce. And I must read read read those logs and make sure acpid is installed.  Hope this  experience helps:)

Should have mentioned that ( 8/24/09)kernel gave message that my bios doesn't support acpi or apm--which it does!  And during boot ACPI wasn't mentioned.  Don't recall ever having to install acpid in arch.  Figured the kernel missed it so I installed acpid.  xorg log now shows acpi present and 3D desktop didn't revert to 2D. And the boot sequence includes starting acpi.
Will wait until I get more experience with arch linux before trying aur, though I've used yaourt.  More familiar with slackware.  Thanx all:)
