Nvidia - nouveau error

Hi.
I have installed archlinux and after some update I have nouveau error (X server is working fine anyway). that's the error:

  • Nouveau errors (MMIO write FAULT) and usb string descriptor malformed

Here's a bit of system information that's useful:
    - My laptop uses Optimus between the CPU (4700MQ) and the GPU (NVIDIA 770M)
    - I'm currently running Manjaro (blasphemy, I know) using the non-free NVIDIA drivers with bumblebee for Optimus (which works very well)
I'm going to move to Arch from Manjaro, but there seem to be a few issues with my boot process (even on the USB drive).
I get these errors on boot of Arch (taken from dmesg --level=err):

Also in the warnings (only the nouveau entry):
    [ 2.522096] nouveau W[ DRM] voltage table 0x50 unknown
Clearly, the nouveau errors come from the open source drivers, but I'm not sure what's causing them. The warning about the voltage table comes before the errors, which is interesting. On my Manjaro installation, I couldn't get the open source drivers to work with bumblebee, so switched to the non-free NVIDIA drivers which ended the errors (since nouveau isn't loaded), and then I could run processes on the GPU with Optimus. Clearly, my reference here is Manjaro, but the errors persist between both.
As for the string descriptor 0 malformed, I have no clue. This happens both on Arch and Manjaro, however it hasn't cause any specific issue, but it is something I have to look at on my boot up, which isn't nice.
Can anyone guess as to the source of the errors?
EDIT: Here is the output of "dmesg | grep nouveau" which gives all the nouveau output during boot: http://pastebin.com/wQiuwApk

  • Photoshop CS6 crashes with nVidia OpenGL Error Code:3

CS6 13.0.1.1 64 bit is crashing from time to time with the nVidia OpenGL Error Code:3.
It most often occurs when waking the system if it entered sleep mode while Photoshop was running but I also get it without entering sleep mode and it doesn't happen every time which makes troubleshooting a problem.   I have to go in and kill the Photoshop.exe process as it remains running and prevents relaunching the program.    Fortunately in most cases I can recover the file due to the autosave feature but that just depends on when the problem happens.
I have installed the latest nVidia GeForce 8800 drivers without resoltuion.
I'd been using CS6 for some time before the crashes started and have rebuilt the system since they started.   Before rebuilding the system I mainly used 32 bit but am now using 64 bit exclusively.    It may have also started after a nVidia update that was carried in Windows 7 updates.    I have changed out the graphcis card with anohter 8800 so am sure it's a software issue.
If anyone has run in to this, I could really use some help resolving it.
    Thanks,

You're several updates behind -- please go install the Photoshop updates.
But it looks like the error might be in a driver (or something that jumps into unknown code) - so you might want to update your video card driver from the GPU maker's website. And make sure that any third party plugins you have installed are up to date.

  • Xorg-config isn't yet, trying nVidia-nouveau, on a desktop machine...

Ok, I'm newbie on 'Arch', but fairly seasoned on Debian-family (MEPIS,sidux), and on openSUSE.
Gotta admit, I am really LIKING this low-level installer, as a means to 'test' my Linux knowledge to date.
But, it's certainly a *slower* way to get KDE-4 running, by having to manually hack on all the individual
/etc/<yada>/yada.conf files using 'nano', rather than just boot a LiveCD all the way into run-level-5 in
one fell swoop, run a GUI-based installer, specify a username/password, and be running
    KDE-4 20 minutes later!
    But, I'm not complaining.
    Let's see...where am I?
Got the basic (run-level-3) system installed to a hard-drive partition, using my existing /home partition.
[Had one small glitch to get ethernet to DHCP-acquire an IP-addr...had to "hook <some-conf?>", so
I could add 'nameserver 192.168.0.1' into 'resolv.conf' (or whatever it's name is) and get that to stick.
So, net-access works.  Was then able to do whatever else that basic-install manual said...told it to
configure me nVidia-nouveau, by creating the '20-nouveau.conf'.  Rebooted, as directed.  (Several times now.)
Tried 'Xorg -configure'.  It fails with:
    1:  [drm] No DRICreatePCIBusID symbol.
2: Num created screens does not match num of detected devices.
EDIT: Oh, did read that I could grab an existing xorg.conf from another distro, but
    that would be cheating, eh?
That's the one blocking getting to run-level-5.
I did 'jump ahead' and installed KDE-4, but of course, till I make Xorg happy, that's really not
    gonna do me much good.
So, in addition to advice on configuring Xorg, one other 'forest-for-the-trees question':
Is there a higher-level (GUI-based) approach to installing Arch, rather than using 'netinstall'?
(I did notice that other kit, recommended for 'people with unreliable networks', but that
    didn't sound like me.)
    TIA...

I agree with 'some like the control of cmd-line, to achieve non-default settings', but I'd argue that
doing the installation using a LiveCD like Chakra OUGHT to allow the 'same' choices and flexibility
    that the cmd-line method does.
However, in my view, the 'cmd-line' approach seemed to leave out actually forcing (guiding the
user thru a script that causes 'sound' and 'wifi' pre-requisites to actually get installed)!  (The
'netcfg' package is a prime example.)  Instead, the user follows a written document (e.g. either
'basic' or 'complete' arch manuals, which mention subjects like 'sound' and 'wifi', but then do
NOT even detect presence of 'wifi-adapter' or 'sound' hardware, etc.  In other words, if
ANY wifi-hardware is detected, the 'netcfg' package should get installed, but clearly doesn't.
Rather, it relies on the person installing to somehow know/determine that they need to
manually install 'netcfg' (as well as then manually hunt-down their firmware, etc).
Whereas, the 'Chakra' (GUI) approach at least makes an attempt (e.g. causes 'netcfg' to
get installed transparently), easing the learning curve.
That said, the negative of the guided/GUI approach is that the person installing does NOT
then learn/understand precisely WHAT STEPS got executed for them, and thus learns very
little of what packages and what config-files need to be examined/modified to carry
out those various steps.  As I result, while I'm convinced that SUCCESSFUL 'arch' owners/users
become some of the most knowledgeable users in the details of Linux configuration,
I'm left wondering just what per-cent of newbies who first TRY Linux via 'arch',
end up succeeding with it, versus either giving up  on Linux or wandering off to some
other distro that has a more scripted/automated installer.
(i.e. an install-script/GUI that tries to get them up-and-running with minimal fuss, and allows them
to  LATER absorb the details,  via  future updates/maintenance glitches/issues.).
In other words, after my 5-10 years of Linux experience, I was surprised how much I had to
struggle, to get a working laptop-with-wifi installation.  In a word, I 'failed' the test that
arch provided me, and felt I had to resort to Chakra, to meet the other goal of getting
that laptop up-and-running with sound and wifi and xserver working.  But, maybe that's
just a reflection of our modern society's push into the "instant-gratification" direction?
Thanks to ALL who have participated in this thread, for their guidance!  As I mentioned,
I'm both humbled and more knowledgeable than I was when I started on the 'arch'
journey, just a few short days ago.
As I mentioned in the base-post, I came to 'arch' to LEARN something, and to TEST my
Linux knowledge, and I met those goals.  That said, I found it disconcerting that the manual(s)
that I read seemed to gloss over such fundamental things as not mentioning the
need to install 'netcfg' and not-resulting in some flavor of sound-support being put in place.

    Any other solutions are welcome.
FYI, the card I have is a GTX 770.

  • Can't boot arch installation media with nvidia 9600GT – nouveau error

    Hello!
I recently tried Arch Linux and was very pleased with the performance and distro philosophy. I've managed to install it on my laptop following the beginners guide. Though, today I tried the same thing on my desktop computer and can't even reach the installation command line. This desktop have a nvidia 9600GT graphics card installed.
I leave my process here for better understanding:
    Boot computer with installation media (I'm using the archlinux-2013.08.01-dual.iso);
    Select Boot Arch Linux (x86_64) option from the menu;
Kernel starts to boot and then it gives me the following right after the Triggering uevents message:
    nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:02:00.0] DMA_PUSHER - ch 1 [DRM] get 0x000000000 put 0x0000000000 ib_get 0x00000000 ib_put 0x00000001 state 0xa0000000 (err: IB_EMPTY) push 0x00406040
the boot process freezes and I have to manually shutdown the computer.
Just to be sure, I tried the same installation media on a different computer and it boots normally.
I'm thinking of swaping the graphics card temporarily just for the initial installation. After that I could install the nvidia drivers and connect this graphic card back on. But sadly I'm one graphics card short.
    Can you help me?
    Thank you in advance.

    Welcome to Arch.
Try editing the kernel command line and adding nomodeset. This should force the OS to fall back to an alternative because nouveau requires modesetting, if I remember correctly.
Wow! That solved it! Thank you.

  • Can't get into my DE anymore after nvidia/nouveau switch + other stuff

I made a mess of things, and I'd very much like to get my system back into a normal state. Here's a brief history of important events:
    (1) About 2 weeks ago after a system update, I couldn't log into Gnome via GDM anymore (see topic). Thankfully I could still get into Gnome via 'startx', so I stuck with that for a while. Busy time, and no real fix was forthcoming.
    (2) About 4 days ago after a system update, that didn't work anymore either. (Both monitors would just stay black, but with a thick white bar on the left side of the right monitor.)
    (3) I switched from binary nvidia drivers to nouveau, in the hope that that would fix things. It did, sort of. I could use startx again, but my display would now freeze after a short time of use, with many nouveau related errors in dmesg. My bug report to freedesktop.org about this is most comprehensive.
I really need a functional PC right now. Short of an actual fix, I'd love to just roll back everything to the state it was a month ago or so. But no luck there either.
    (4) I installed the nvidia drivers again, uninstalled the nouveau stuff, set my system to query the Arch Rollback Machine for a month ago, and did a `pacman -Syyuu --force`. GDM still doesn't work, nor does startx. Using startx, I get the following 'Xorg.0.log' (I remember getting the same errors during my earlier messing about):

can you try with another Display manager like lightdm see if that works ?
I might try that, though now that I finally have my PC back I have some other work that takes priority for a few days. :-)
Malkymder wrote:And yes xorg.conf should be replaced with /etc/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf instead
I'm using `nvidia-xconfig` to generate that file (I haven't had to tinker with it manually for years now).
The tool generates this 'deprecated' file. Should I just move its exact content to the new location?

  • Linux 3.9.2-1 lockups (nVidia + nouveau)

With the recent update from Linux 3.8.11-1 to Linux 3.9.2-1, upon restart my computer would lock up after roughly 5 minutes and the CPU and/or GPU fan (couldn't tell which) started to spin up very fast a few seconds before hand. As soon as I downgraded to Linux 3.8.11-1, everything started to work again.
I am running an nVidia card (7950 I believe) and the nouveau drivers.
Has anyone experience a similar situation, and how can I get some more debug info to help resolve this?

I do, with the official nVidia driver, however it seems to be fixed disabling the nVidia card with bbswitch (I'm on an Optimus Laptop, Dell L502X)
However, for some reason mplayer won't work. When I try to play a video, it crashes right away, and I see a kernel error in dmesg

  • [SOLVED] No 3D Acceleration on nvidia (nouveau)

I'm having some issues with the 3D acceleration here. I'm trying to get gnome-shell to start but it goes into fallback mode. It appears to be an issue with driver or xorg configuration.
I went through all of the Beginner's guide on the wiki, and from that I did the Gnome 3 guide. Well, actually first I tried to install the nvidia driver but it wasn't compatible (which I later read on arch mainsite under news) so I installed the nouveau driver + nouveau-dri, did the configuration needed and rebooted.
As I finally tried to do startx I got into fallback mode only of gnome3. It says no hardware 3D support is available.
    .xinitrc: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/374112/
    /var/log/Xorg.0.log: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/374113/
I don't have any xorg.conf at the moment as it said in the beginner's guide it wan't needed. I put the 20-nouveau.conf and all that where it should be.
(Aditionally after I updated the system from a clean arch install and installed xorg and rebooted arch gets stuck on udev on the init script for about 3-4 minutes before going on. Should I try this one?)

My graphics card is a GTX 460, if there's any more info I should provide please let me know. Thanks.

GTX 460 is a nv0 card and looking in http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix you'll see that for nv0 you need external firmware
9 - Needs external firmware, which we can't provide yet. See firmware status.
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/InstallDRM#Firmware to see how to extract the firmware.
Why are you not using nvidia driver?

  • [SOLVED] nouveau error while booting arch

Hi!!! I'm newbie to arch, here is an error I can't solve myself. I search in google for solutions but they didn't solved. Please help me to solve this. I dual booted arch linux with window 8.1. After installation, while booting for the first time, this error occurred.
Here is the error I found.

That is a different problem to be honest. I assume that you can login using your normal user? If you set up sudo you might be able to get into root by using
    sudo su
and change the password like that.
I'm sorry if this is a noob question. Where do I type sudo su because as soon as the OS is booted, the system asks localhost login and password. I haven't installed any desktop environment yet. I only set up a password under arch-chroot but I can't login with and without that password.
I was assuming a normal installed environment with a normal user. Using "sudo su", you can abuse privileges granted by sudo to circumvent the password required by su. A well configured sudo should not allow this, but in this case it seemed likely that the system was not completely set up yet.
problem has been solved with this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168879
Then, if there are no more problems, please mark the thread as solved.

  • [SOLVED]NVIDIA Xorg Errors

I installed Xorg and the proprietary nvidia driver using the wiki, but when running xinit or startx I get errors such as  no nvidia.ko, unable to connect to X server, and Nos such process server error
    Rebooted and works fine
    Last edited by duke11235 (2010-08-23 00:36:15)

    New Progress!
I've managed to get my screen to go black during the server's run, instead of having my TTY just freeze!
    I followed the instructions here
However, now I have the problem that the X server shuts down about two seconds after startup. I have confirmed that both of the xrandr commands are completed.
    Here is my x log
    Here is my x output
As you can see, we have "Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section". I have no idea what that means.
The NVIDIA driver still appears to try setting mode "NULL" (maybe it isn't getting the available modes properly?)
At the end, there's this weird thing...
    reporting 3 4 17 122
have a master to look out for
    adjust shatters 0 1366
need to create shared pixmap 1(II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Deleting GPU-0
Uhhh...why is it deleting my GPU? (I have no idea what it means by that)
    UPDATE (again!)...
I HAVE LWM WINDOWS APPEARING! (but I had to stop the nvidia to get that)
I changed the ServerLayout to have Screen 0 be the "intel" screen.
Initially, input wasn't being handled at all, resulting in complete inability to do anything once x started
I managed to get input working by adding some xorg configs for my input devices (now I have fully-functional xorg, but without my nvidia card)
I still want to get my nvidia working.

I'm 99% sure i did, i think it's even mentioned in one of the guides.
Anyway i think this case will have to be closed for further discussion because the reason for this issue-thread
was the fact that my brother (living in another country) couldn't get his graphics to start up and i remotely helped him (he tried starting X, obviously) and I acted as the support.
However he droped ArchLinux (as is) for Manjaro (which worked beautifully with Xface off the bat, so my guess is that i missed something in the setup because running on my Dell ArchLinux runs perfect).l

  • Nvidia / Nouveau Failing [SOLVED]

Using a dual-VGA nVidia Corporation NV17GL [Qaudro NVS] (rev a3) card.
Followed the instructions in the beginner's guide to install Nouveau drivers, but when I 'startx' I get:
    http://gmjones.org/tv/IMAG0138.jpg
    The log reads:
    http://gmjones.org/tv/Xorg.0.log
    Looking like a driver problem!
Any ideas on how to resolve this?
    Thanks.

I still can't launch a desktop, so no fgrab.
Well, that's the point: you don't need a desktop for this.
However, glad your X is up!

  • Photoshop and NVIDIA display errors

I have PS CS5 and an HP pc with an integrated NVIDIA display controller.
Just recently, PS has started crashing the video controller and each time PS is closed down. Very annoying.
I have u/g to the latest NVIDIA drivers, but its still happening. I have also just cleaned my registry from errors.
Does anyone else have the same issue and any ideas on how to resolve it?
    Many thanks

Photoshop relies heavily on the OpenGL implementation in the display driver.  It's possible nVidia has left bugs in the driver for your particular hardware.
What machine/display interface is it, specifically?
Here are the settings you want to experiment with to see if changing the way Photoshop uses OpenGL will help:
    Edit - Preferences - Performance.
In the GPU Settings section, click the [Advanced Settings...] button.
    Try unchecking Vertical Sync.
Try changing the Mode (e.g. from Normal to Basic).
I suggest changing one thing at a time, and after making each change close and restart Photoshop so the settings are saved and it reinitializes with the new settings.  Then, after each change, test to see if the problem is averted.
If you still see problems, you can try disabling OpenGL usage entirely by unchecking the [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing setting in the main Performance dialog.
This page describes the OpenGL-based features in PS CS5:

If all else fails, can your PC take an add-on graphics card?  I'm thinking you could disable the integrated controller and switch to a card known to work well with Photoshop, possibly even another brand than nVidia.

    grazie Raffaele

You need to make an appointment to bring this into the Apple store. From what you're saying this looks like it has the high potential to be a hardware problem and only Apple can resolve it. Looking at the video it reminds me of my 2007 MacBookPro that had an nvidia problem. That required a motherboard replacement from Apple.
