Nvidia Optimus Support under XP - NVS3100mm vs Intel integrated

Hi,
We are currently in the process of evaluating the T510 as our new standard laptop.
We are considdering purchasing teh 4314-9WG model, that has on board both the Nvidia Quadro NVS3100mm, as well as the integrated Intel graphics of the QM57 chipset.
Now normally, the Nvidia Optimus system would enable the user to switch between these 2 graphics "cards"  on the fly (as I understand it).
However, our current install image is still based on Windows XP SP3, as there is no driver support for Nvidia Optimus for XP.
Thus, we have the following question:
Will our users be able to use the Intel integrated Graphics by default on XP, even though the Optimus witching will not work.
or in other words:
Is the Optimus driver a pre-requisite for using one or the other video card as default under Windows XP
What will the Laptop due without this driver?
We would accept that for now, users would be bound to only use either the Intel integrated graphics, or the Nvidia Quadro.

I am able to get the NVS3100 working ok under XP, except that is defaults to 16bit color for some reason, which I then have to change manually.
Now, for the Integrated Intel HD Graphics, I do the following:
In the BIOS, under Display, the "graphics device" is set to Integrated Graphics, and the "OS detection for NVIDIA Optimus" is set to disabled.
I am using the latest drivers for Intel HD, 6.14.10.5313
When Windows XP boots, it detects 2 devices:
- Audiodevice on bus for High Definition Audio
- Videocontroller (VGA Compatible)
If I now try to install the intel driver pack ( 6.14.10.5313 )  it will start with the installation for the Intel Turbo Boost Technology Driver. This seems to install without problem.
But when I click finish at teh end of it, nothing else happens.
What I expect is that it would now start the install for the Intel HD Graphics setup. And it simply doesnt.
If I first unpack the executable, i get a folder called DISPLAY6
Inside, I can start an executable called Setup (Intel HD Graphics Installer) But all this seems to do is start the Turbo Boost Technology driver setup again. And afterwards, again, nothing happens.
I have tried it both from a situation where the NVIDIA drivers where previously not installed, and where they where installed and I switched it later. Both give the same results.
Its almost like it doesnt properly detect teh hardware, or cant see that the Intel driver goes with it.
I have also tried to manually install teh driver, by pointing to unknown VGA device to teh unpacked driver location, but it doesnt find any drivers there that it can use.

  • Lack of Nvidia extension support under macosx

I'd like to play City of Heroes under macosx using Crossover Games.
I can do so fine on my macbook pro because it has a ati graphics card.
However on my tower I have a nvidia graphics card and the game will not load.
When I reported it to Crossover Games, I got the following email:
    From Stefan Dösinger <[email protected]>
date Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 11:39 AM
    subject CrossOver Games Mac Trial
It says "Your card does not support GLNV_vertexprogram" when I launch CohUpdater.exe .
That's because GLNV_vertexprogram(a nvidia specific opengl extension) isn't supported on MacOS. It is strictly speaking a bug in CoH. This extension isn't garanted to be there, even if you have an Nvidia card. An application must not depend on it.
The thing is that this extension happens to be supported by all Nvidia drivers on Windows and Linux, but MacOS uses different drivers which don't support it. So the game's broken assumption that Nvidia->GLNV_vertexprogram support doesn't hold true on Macs.
I can understand that this causes troubles for you. I can file a bug in Apple's bugtracker requesting support for this extension, but its likely that they'll just tell me that software can't depend on this extension.

Not really sure what type of response you're expecting here. Youv'e been told that the drivers don't support it, and there's really nothing your or anyone else here can do about it but hope for future support.

  • NVIDIA Optimus Display Driver for Windows 7 (64 Bit) interfering with Microsoft Outlook 2013

    Lenovo Community
Can't explain it nor do I understand it but it appears that the latest NVIDIA Optimus Display Drivers (Version 9.18.13.1270 / 8.15.10.2725, dated 05 Jan 2014) is interfering with Microsoft Outlook 2013. For a week I have been working with Microsoft Technical and Lenovo's Premium Support to no avail. I have reformatted my hard drive 4 times and uninstall and reinstalled Office 2013 Pro more time than I can to remember. The issue stared last Tuesday (18 Mar 2014) when I uploaded new drivers from Lenovo and Microsoft. Outlook would not execute (the initial Outlook dialog would just say processing ....) For four day's Microsoft, Lenovo, and I trouble shot everything under the sun. What was odd was whenever Microsoft or Lenovo technicians took control of my computer Outlook worked fine, and when I stated this to the technicians they thought I was nuts, but once I had control the problem returned. Finally frustrated to the hill I once again reformatted my hard drive but this time installed the Lenovo updates and software one at a time creating numerous restore points along the way. When I updated the new NVIDIA drivers the problem resurfaced.  When I would go into the device manager and uninstall the NVIDIA driver’s outlook once again worked fine.  I finally was able to reinstall (through my restore points) the previous version of drivers and Outlook is working fine.  Is there something to this. ??????
    Jeff

I always avoid Optimus, it's historically been way too buggy and very little performance bump over HD4000/4600.  I either opt for Quadro machines or just run Intel integrated.  That being said, it's a blessing in disguise for you since Outlook is hideos.  Consider something else, so many better options exist.

  • NVIDIA Optimus on MSI GE70 2OE: No screens, then server fails to start

    Hello,
I have recently acquired an MSI GE70 2OE-071 laptop with the following configuration, intending to run Arch Linux (dual boot with Windows 7) on it:
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4700 MQ
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M (2 GB DDR5 memory)
    LCD: 17.3" FHD 1920x1080
    Memory: 12 GB DDR3
    HDD: 1 TB 7200 RPM
I originally installed Arch Linux the same way as described in the beginner's guide. I could get the basic twm setup to work, but the moment I installed the proprietary drivers (using pacman -S nvidia, followed by nvidia-xconfig, followed by a reboot), X Windows crashed, i.e. I started getting the No screens found error. So after some days of digging, I found the NVIDIA Optimus wiki page. Following the advice here, I could get rid of this error, but I still cannot get into the GUI, because the server terminates. There is no hardware problem that I can think of because Manjaro Linux works fine, and being a perpetual Arch novice eager to learn, I just wanted to get this thing to work from the ground up.
So I'd really appreciate some help.
Here are the relevant files and command outputs.

If I understand this correctly, then you have an Optimus graphics card (couldn't find anything online, but your lspci looks like it). I too have such a setup on my laptop. The thing to keep in mind here, is that your main graphics card is the Intel integrated card. So instead of installing your system like with an nvidia card, you install it like an intel card. Specifically, you would want to follow the instructions on Bumblebee. Once you followed them, the whole graphics part runs on the Intel card. Once you want to play a game or do some other heavy graphics card work you call your application like this:
    optirun wine /path/to/game.exe
Notice how optirun tells the system to use the nvidia card. It will take a second or two to start it (specifically, enable the card, start another X screen and launch the application on it transparently). Follow the instructions in the Wiki if you have any problems.
If you don't have an Optimus card (just NVIDIA, no Intel), then don't follow any Optimus instructions, just usual NVIDIA stuff from the Wiki.

  • NVIDIA Optimus: Can't init X11

I'm trying to install official drivers on Arch and run X11, but no luck so far...
Graphic card is Nvidia740M (with intel on-chip gpu)
    followed the instructions here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus
But when starting X11 , I get the error: Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. error, with the actual problem being related to Failed to assign any connected display devices to X screen 0.
Been playing with this a day, and really getting frustrated, I also don't care about the intel driver, power-saving and switchable graphics like bumblebee
I can only get it to work by installing open-source intel drivers (xf86-video-intel), nouveau also brings up the same error.

some stuff I'm curious about :
    - I installed xrandr after nvidia drivers, as the guide said, but xrandr doesn't work in terminal, brings up "no screens" error, is this normal ?
    - I also noticed that when I initialize X11 with intel (xf86-video-intel) drivers, xrandr shows VGA1, HDMI1, HDMI2, VIRTUAL as valid displays, but in the Xorg.log (nvidia) I don't any any of these enumerated.
    any hints or help ?
    thanks

Why? it's the best way to get it to work.
Tried bumblebee too, still get the same error, wanted to get things more simple and also try official nvidia (optimus)
Check the xorg example on this page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus (this if you only want to use nvidia and disable intel).
Don't forget to get the busID and add it to the xorg. Then try again.
Yes, I have tried the xorg.conf written there. If you also see the current xorg.conf, it has BusID too. I don't get device not found error (which is the case for missing BusID)
Does Intel device also need BusID too ?

  • Black screen - Xorg/GDM config - Nvidia Optimus? [solved]

    Hi!
I have a Samsung RC539 S09, which has got an Nvidia Optimus graphics card, I want a graphical Xserver on that machine. Therefore I followed the wiki and installed the Nvidia stuff (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA). I did not configure anything jet. I also installed the Xorg stuff and kept the config default (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg). Then I did nvidia-xconfig:

What does that mean? - No devices detected - can refer to these Nvidia Optimus stuff, where there's some ondemand switching for graphics acceleration afaik. I'm not sure how to solve my issue. So at this point could need some help
    Best,
    wishi
edit: got this working with the intel stuff. Did onyone archive GPU support jet?

    first at all check
    lspci | grep -i vga
I have optimus and I see both cards, Intel and nVidia.
    What do you see?
If you install xf86-video-intel instead of nvidia driver, does it work then? (backup & remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf then)
I had to disable optimus and switch to my dedicated nVidia graphics card  in bios in order to make nvidia driver work.
Now I'm using intel with bumblebee (optimus support for linux) & optimus enabled in bios, and bumblebee loads proprietary nvidia drivers when required.
But I also have a thinkpad t510, I don't know if bumblebee works with your device.
    cheers, kulpae

  • Laptop with two graphics cards? [Nvidia Optimus - SOLVED]

    Hi,
I just bought a laptop that includes two graphics cards: a low-power Intel one and a high-performance nVidia card. Right now I'm just using the Intel graphics card, and the system only detects it. When I install nVidia drivers I have to uninstall the intel drivers because of incompatibilities, and it doesn't even start the X server. I could attach a log if necessary, but I haven't found anything relevant, it just says that the nVidia driver is not valid for the detected graphics card. Is there a way to use both graphics cards transparently, like in other-operating-systems?
    Some hints? Thank you!
Last edited by gskbyte (2011-08-04 13:14:02)

It's called Optimus. Kinda surprised there's people who don't already know about it. Not supported fully in Linux, but there's a hack to get the nvidia card going: Bumblebee
    Edit: Bah, too late!

  • W530 Windows 8.1 Hyper-V nVidia Optimus not working

Well, I only just noticed when I tried to run a CUDA enabled application that my nVidia Optimus drivers are not working.
If I look in "Device Manager" then it only shows the Intel HD 4000 device, no sign of my nVidia card at all.
This only started happening after I enabled the Hyper-V role, and was working fine when I was using VMWare Workstation.
    Setup:
    Intel i7-3840QM | 32GB RAM | nVidia K2000M Optimus | 2x 512GB SSD
    Windows 8.1 Pro | Hyper-V Role Enabled
Note - I don't want to force Discrete Graphics in the BIOS because I need decent battery life!

To me it seems that this will not work under Win 8 Pro.
I think that this would require the Windows OS Feature "RemoteFX", which is bundled by Microsoft only with the Server version of the OS.
If you are able to check whether it works fine with "RemoteFX", please inform me with a note here.
I had a similar issue.  I opened the thread
Windows Phone 8.1 Emulator incompatible to nVidia Quadro graphic control?
I'm  still waiting for a qualified response by Microsoft.
Maybe you can inform them, too, that bundling  "RemoteFX" with Win Pro would be a good thing.
    Greetings, pet-ro

  • CS6/Bridge doesn't use GPU on Nvidia Optimus machines

    Photoshop CS6/Bridge
    Win8.1 64bit/Nvidia GTX 870M
Is there a way to force Adobe Bridge to using the Nvidia GPU rather than “software rendering”?
The problem: Starting Bridge on notebooks with the Nvidia Optimus (I tested several) in “preferences -advanced”, the option, “use software rendering”, is not tagged which is correct.
But as soon as I open an image and recheck with the preferences, “use software rendering” is tagged and greyed out, hence zooming and all other manipulations suffer from a lack of speed and smoothness, slide-show for ex. is not usable at all.
I’m familiar with the Nvidia control panel and of course the Nvidia GPU is assigned to Bridge.exe there.
Strange enough, in the registry, the Bridge – preferences value for “use software rendering” always stays on “0”, which is correct.
BTW. Photoshop is running fine on the Nvidia GPU.
It is a shame that Bridge performs a lot better on a 6 years old laptop than on a brand new high end gaming machine only because there is Optimus on board.
Does anybody have an idea for a workaround?

Is there any insight here? I can't seem to get my brand new work y70 to use the NVidia graphics card for any external displays! What the heck is going on!? And, moreso, why can't even the crummy Intel onboard graphics push 2560 x 1600 via either HDMI or USB (through a replicator)? I've had a 30" monitor running 2560 x 1600 for 5 years. This is a brand new laptop and can't push out high res?! It's crazy to me!! EDIT: I presently have the Intel display adapter disabled in the device manager. I have video on the laptop display but I can no longer get ANY external displays to work. Which means, to me, it would seem that the NVidia GPU is 100% relegated to the laptop display, ONLY.

  • Setting up vdpau in nvidia optimus laptops

    Hi,
I have purchased a laptop with nvidia optimus with integrated intel graphic card.
I want to setup vdpau in it.

    Hi
Is there anyone who have managed to install nvidia optimus GT 630m in ubuntu or any other OS linux and worked?? coz I did all the methods which are available on net, but no luck, found out that Bumblebee can't get to enable Nvidia!! is it right??
How to switch graphic card? does it have an option to switch card in BIOS??
Need a help to install nvidia on ubuntu!! I'm using linux ( ubuntu 12.10and kernel 3.6.0)
I appreciate your help and thanks

    Hi RedStar
To be quite forward with You: there is very few details that can be used to help You.
Suggestions from me: You say there are errors. Great. But what are the error messages.
When asking for help, please try to put yourself in the position of the people you are asking help from.
THey need details and relevant information to be able to help.
They probably know very little of your specific situation.
Stating things like "it doesn't work" is simply not enough.
"there are errors" - well ok. That lets people know that something is not running on rails....but what?
And vague details are also not enough. Provide the exact messages! Copy & Paste if You need to.
Anyway, I suggest that You issue bug reports on the Bumblebee site for a better support since they probably are the best to help You.
    https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bumblebee/wiki/Reporting-Issues
BTW - thanks for enlightening me on the Bumblebee project! I was not aware of this until You told me :)
Good luck and please report your progress back into this thread. I am sure many people are interested in your experiences. I am!
    BR Tom

  • Nvidia optimus KMS doesn't work

Hi all! I am on an HP Notebook with Nvidia Optimus. Displays are connected to the intel gpu, and I am using bumblebee+proprietary nvidia driver. The intel driver is i915.
Since the system is using the intel card to manage the screens, I though I could use KMS. But referring to this post on stack exchange:
    http://superuser.com/questions/223094/h … ms-enabled
and also to the fact that plymouth doesn't work at boot (but strangely it works on shutdown) I found out that KMS does not work. Also, if i add "i915" to MODULES
in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf not only it still doesn't work, but also tty's do nothing. Gnome starts, but if I do CRTL+ALT+F2 or similars I only see a blinking underscore and no login screen. And if I try to write something nothing happens.
    So the answer is:
If I use i915 as X gpu, but I have installed proprietary driver for use with Bumblebee, can I turn KMS on?

Hi, Mazima. The MBP can't use both GPUs at once — it always uses one or the other. If you've switched to the Higher Performance setting in Energy Saver and can play the game at all, your 9600M GT is working. But if it hasn't made a dramatic difference in frame rates when you're playing WoW, there's something else going on.
IS WoW the only thing running on your computer? If not, quit all other applications and see whether that helps with your frame rates. Experiment with different settings within the game. And see whether you can find any useful information in WoW's own forums, assuming there are forums related to it.

I always avoid Optimus, it's historically been way too buggy and very little performance bump over HD4000/4600.  I either opt for Quadro machines or just run Intel integrated.  That being said, it's a blessing in disguise for you since Outlook is hideos.  Consider something else, so many better options exist.

  • NVIDIA Optimus: how do I unload nouveau PRIME?

I have a Laptop with NVIDIA Optimus and I tried out render offloading using nouveau PRIME.
    Works quite well actually.
    How to reproduce it:
    xf86-video-{intel,nouveau} are both installed
    no specific xorg.conf is present
    #turn on GPU
    sudo tee /proc/acpi/bbswitch <<< ON
    #load nouveau module
    sudo modprobe nouveau
#start X, or start the display manager
    startx
    #sudo systemctl start gdm.service
    then, in a terminal
    xrandr --listproviders
    output:
    Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x8a cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 2 outputs: 2 associated providers: 0 name:Intel
Provider 1: id: 0x66 cap: 0x7, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload crtcs: 2 outputs: 5 associated providers: 0 name:nouveau
Now let's use nouveau as offload source
    xrandr --setprovideroffloadsink nouveau Intel
and now I can run apps on the NVIDIA card like this:
    DRI_PRIME=1 glxgears
    Now my question:
The graphics card stays powered on because the nouveau module is loaded, and the nouveau module is in use by xrandr.
Can I somehow still unload nouveau and turn off the GPU or do I have to restart the Xorg server?

The nouveau is shut down once the program using it is terminated, check the sensors, you will see temps indicated during noueveau use.
