Nvidia or ATI

Hello,
Wich videocard is the best for video editing with premiere elements ?
What are the profits of a NVIDIA and what are the profits of an ATI card ?
What should I buy ?

What about this?

I find it entertaining that a TNT2 video card from the late nineties with 1/1000th the performance is supported, but not a mainstream ATI Radeon HD 5750?
I don't know if this is typical, but with my ATI Radeon HD 5700, applying filters and transitions results in awful performance -- basically I can't even click or preview video or anything.
Now, rendering the final version is definitely fast.

    I want to install a helicopter simulator into my MacPro1,1 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB and Open GL 1.7.7. Recommended system requirements for the heli simulator are: OpenGL Version 2.1 compatible 3D-graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI with 512MB (at least as fast as NVIDIA 8600, 9400 or ATI Radeon HD 2400). Is there such a graphics card available that will work in my Mac Pro?

    Are you really still running 10.6.3? you will need 10.6.5+ so do that and make a clone.
    ATI 5770 from Apple Store - like 1000s of others have done and in the comments section on the store page.

  • Used G5--  NVIDIA or ATI?

    I'm in the market for a used G5, I see some that come with NVIDIA cards, others with ATI +(for example NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or ATI Radeon 9600 Pro)+.
    This machine will use FCP and sometimes Motion, is there an appreciable difference between the different card manufacturers that should cause me to look for one over another?

    Hi Wes,
    they are both recommended by Apple.
    Inevitably we (us, forum members) tend to base our answers on what we have experience with and/or prefer most.
    In my experience over the last few years I have been pleased with both Nvidia and ATI cards with all my computers, however, the ATI card on my MacPro (see my profile) has been particularly powerful and consistent and I could notice some remarkable performance.
    Ati and Apple have been sharing a rather good business relationship so far and I would imagine that the former' technical support is particularly aware of the latter's machines and systems "engines".

  • Installing nvidia over ati

    Hi Folks
    just a quick question, I'v bought a new 6600 nvidia card and am about to install, would it be best to uninstall the old ati drivers before installing the new card or can I install over the top. tia Hazzo

    Yeah, thanks Richard, I was trying to catch you but you had just logged off, around 4.00am your time it said. I did completely remove all drivers for the ati card, now I just have to suss how to use the vidia one properly. H

  • CS5 cannot support nVidia and ATI cards in same machine?

    Until recently, I was operating fine with a Radeon HD 5750 on dual monitors.  I wanted to add and utilize a third monitor (had some trouble with the DisplayPort output), so I just stuck in an off the shelf nVidia 8400 card.
    With the latest drivers on both, and both using OpenGL 3.2, CS5 seems to just freak out.  (The issue seems to be OpenGL centric.)
    Photoshop x86 just crashes while loading.
    Photoshop x64 will load, but it immediately reports that my cards do not support OpenGL acceleration and disables it.  It otherwise seems to work fine.
    After Effects will sort of run, but some strange things crash while it's loading (like gpu_sniffer.exe).  It crashes all the time during RAM previews, now, and the option to accelerate the GUI (or previews) with OpenGL is disabled.  So, while it's use-able, it's slow.
    Premiere Pro absolutely refuses to start.  I cannot even get a splash screen.
    (The other apps I do not use much.)
    I've gone back to dual monitor for now on the Radeon card (problems resolved with disabling the nVidia card), but do the CS5 apps really have that much trouble with two video cards with different chipsets?  Is there something I am forgetting to do?  I am not asking any of the apps to utilize the third monitor, so I cannot fathom what the issue is.  Again, the OpenGL version is the same on both cards...and both cards have the latest drivers (both from November).
    I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction or let me know what I should do to enable the nVidia card to peacefully co-exist and still be able to use OpenGL with the CS5 apps.
    Thanks for your help.
    Machine specs:
    * P43-based ASUS motherboard
    * Intel Core2Quad (each core at 2.8Ghz)
    * Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
    * 16 GB DDR3 RAM
    * ATI Radeon HD 5750 (1GB)
    * nVidia 8400 GS (512MB)
    * CS5 Master Collection

    It's not that the apps don't support mixed cards - but that the OpenGL drivers for the cards do not work well together.
    Even mixing different models of cards from the same vendor can run into problems when using OpenGL.
    Some apps have made mixed cards work - by using one GPU and completely ignoring the rest.
    We've talked to the GPU vendors to see about improving the situation, but, well, they're competitors.

  • Compositing causes screen tearing with Nvidia, is ATI a better choice?

    So far, every Nvidia card I've used with Ubuntu, Debian and Arch has had intolerable screen tearing with a compositing manager running, while watching any video. I've installed the proprietary driver from Nvidia on a Debian machine but the screen tearing is still there. The cards I've been using are an 8600GT and a 9600GT.
    I've tried xcompmgr, Xfce compositing and Gnome compositing all of which seem to cause the same symptoms.
    It seems like I read somewhere that there's a problem with the Nvidia compositing extension or something like that...
    Two questions...
    1) Do ATI cards tear video with compositing enabled? (I'm hoping they don't...)
    2) Is there any way to cure screen tearing with an nvidia card and compositing enabled?

    ATI Radeon 4670 user here, KDE w/ Arch Linux. While I can't speak for other video cards, this particular card runs absolutely fine using xf86-video-ati and some xorg.conf tweaks. Though I don't play many games, I can tell you Alice runs fine via WINE. As far as OpenGL goes, the screen savers that are supposedly OpenGL work fine, too.
    The only performance difference between this card and the 7600GS I was using beforehand that I can tell (minus the speed improvement) is being forced to view videos using the Xvideo driver in KMPlayer. If I view said videos via OpenGL, they display, however widgets on the desktop tend to offer display glitches while the video is ongoing.
    I understand there's a good deal of reason for the commenting, and yes, ATI drivers aren't nearly up to par with their Nvidia counterparts, however this doesn't mean some folks aren't having success with the available driver(s) using little effort on their parts. As an ATI user, it'd be nice to see some fellow reports of success with ATI drivers, open source or not.

  • Replacing nvidia with ati in first gen mac pro

    posted this in the using osx forum but realized this might be a better
    place for this issue.
    i'm debugging a problem system, a first gen mac pro, that has a 7300gt
    in it. i also have a second gen mac pro that has no problems. i've
    made many changes to the problem system and am coming down to my last
    couple of options, one of which is swapping graphics cards. the problem
    system is running an nvidia card, the problem-free box is running an ati
    card. maybe a driver conflict in the nvidia driver?
    the issue is that, on boot, my external sata box hangs when recognizing
    the box's four channels. this does not happen on the second gen mac pro.
    i'm down to the last three things:
    graphics chipset differences
    logic board differences between first, second gen
    osx 10.4 vs osx 10.5
    i'm now testing the graphics card as a possible solution. i've gotten
    conflicting reports as to what graphics cards might work with a first
    gen mac pro still running 10.4.11.
    a tech told me that the 2600xt i have in my second gen will not work
    in the first gen. on the other hand, someone here said they were using
    one. will the 10.4.11 system have any necessary drivers for this card?
    also, the 3870 has been recommended. i've also thought about the 4870.
    i've also seen a lot of discussion about driver problems (that they're
    unavailable) with regard to the 4870, that the drivers would be included
    in a 10.5.7 update. if these drivers won't be available until 10.5.7,
    it would seem i should stay away from the 4870 for now. but what about
    the 3870? will my 10.4.11 system be able to use this card?
    any info much appreciated,
    BabaG

    Trial and error, creative troubleshooting.
    Take that one 4-drive RAID across two channels. What happens if all four are on the same channel? what if the firmware - there is firmware for the case, right?
    Does Norco offer replacement PSUs?
    Convert the Apple RAID to SoftRAID (I'd do that regardless anyway).
    http://www.softraid.com
    AND, their support people have helped me with multiple problems, even to help pin-point the er, "culprit" even when it was controller or drive (one vendor blamed Maxtor Atlas drive, then blamed Apple, we came out though showing it was their firmware on their controller card, and a new firmware was released 3 months later - it took me and SoftRAID weeks to nail it.
    Some drives have delayed or staggered spinup, some do not. And some are optimized for RAID. You don't want to use drives that are not. And you want to test each drive before it is put into production (I would give a drive a week of testing before using any drive today).
    Remember where SCSI controllers would also list what drives that they had certified for use with, and were known to work with? or which were not? You don't see that as much, but some do.
    AMUG mentioned using the DS1220 with Sonnet Tempo E4P I think. Sonnet has their own line of rack mount storage. Get them in on the discussion. Try their controller after asking (Niel) what he thinks and knows about Norco.
    You don't mention what you use or have done, but swapping out controllers, and having a spare or backup is often helpful. Even a "given."
    Put a good watt meter (if it logs all the better) to see what kind of current draw or peak inrush your setup exhibit. Put the Mac and the storage rack on separate UPS, either APC SMART or RS800VA, and line conditioner (ZeroSurge).
    12 x 25W and I'd probably want as large a PSU and high efficiency unit.

  • Nvidia vs ATI - cuda vs openCL 2015

    Looking to purchase a new mac pro - budget for a 2012 12core.
    Google and this forum show seemingly outdated discussion on cuda vs open CL.
    I want to reopen the conversation for the current mac osx and nvidia compatibility.
    Currently is there a major difference, while using premiere and after effects, between using cuda or open cl?
    What about ease of use in the mac osx- is it easy to get mac to see an nvidia card and installing the cuda drivers?
    For a 2012 12 core mac 5,1 that would be primarily an editing machine using premiere and aftereffects, would you
    recommend a ATI Radeon HD 7950 3GB w/ 1800 OpenCL Cores
    or a GeForce GTX 680 2GB w/ 1500 CUDA Cores

  • Do I go NVIDIA or ATI

    I want to get the most out of the picture on my 30" HD Cinema Display. Which card do I go with to achieve 1080i???

    right... so you have two choices...
    the default NVidia GeForce 7300 GT, or for an additional $249, the ATI X1900XT.
    if you need 3D processing power or run applications that specifically take advantage of video processing... then the ATI X1900XT is undoubtedly a better card. the performance advantage is significantly better... by a couple of factors, not just a little bit. however, if you are not running these types of applications or playing games, it is a situation where more hardware performance does not really help when you are not using it... i.e. when running mail, safari, or office applications, you will not see a benefit from having better graphics hardware.
    like i mentioned before, the AVIVO processing is a bit better than the NVidia purevideo processing. these tests were done on a PC, so not sure if those tests are still relevant on a Mac, but I imagine they would be. these performance advantages are very subtle, and you will notice them if watching very carefully for them on motion graphics where one would be able to see "tearing" on material that is difficult to perform "reverse pulldown" and deinterlacing on video / HD video material only.... something to consider if you are a videophile.
    regardless, the card is such an inexpensive upgrade, that I would recommend that ATI if you aren't sure that you might not need it in the future and can afford it.
    if you can't afford the upgrade and know for sure you are only going to surf the web, run an office app here or there, but never run higher powered applications or games, and could care less about the slight video quality increase with the ATI, then you are quite safe with the NVideo GeForece 7300 GT as it is a very good low powered card, good for the tyipcal user.
    by the way, don't consider the NVidia Quadro card. you don't need it. if you do need it, you are a graphics professional and know exactly why and can ignore my advice, even though it is so confidently stated. most people will be better off with the significantly cheaper ATI, except for those very few that really do need the workstation class card, and even that is debatable from a cost/benefit analysis.

  • Which Video Card for MDD - Nvidia or ATi Radeon?

    Mac nVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4600/Ti4600 128MB Video Card G4
    BRAND NEW
    I saw this item on eBay, and it looks like a good deal, but elsewhere on this forum someone said the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro was preferred for the Mirror Drive Door model.
    The NVidia seems to have the best price. Assuming either are compatible (need AGP) which would be recommended, and why?
    My present card is 64MB. I would hope that one with 128MB would improve performance with my Final Cut Express and 3D programs, such as Carrara and SketchUp, and give better results with an LCD monitor (and the card supports dual monitors, I think)
    many thanks,
    K.

    Hi Keith-
    The biggest problem with the Geforce4 Ti is lack of Core Image support. This is of major importance in OS X, important to some graphics/video editing applications and is indicative of a GPU that is more powerful than the cards that don't support Core Image.
    The Radeon 9800 Pro is a card that supports Core Image, and does so with ease.
    For applications, Quartz Extreme is a given, but Open GL is also of concern. The Radeon 9800 Pro scores higher in Open GL benchmarks than the Geforce4 Ti.
    As for 3D, shaders are of importance. The Radeon cards often offer better shader support than the Geforce cards. This is true when comparing the Geforce4 Ti and the Radeon 9800 Pro.
    Not only is the architecture of the Radeon 9800 Pro better, 8 pixel pipelines vs. 4, but the drivers for the Radeon are superior. In fact, it is a gamers secret in some applications, to use Radeon shader drivers to get better performance out of their Geforce cards.
    Not to be overlooked, but the amount of VRAM is not as important as the GPU clock speed, and the memory (VRAM) speed. The Geforce4 Ti has a GPU of 300mhz, and DDR VRAM at 325mhz (effective 650mhz).
    The Radeon 9800 Pro has a GPU clocked at 378mhz, and DDR VRAM clocked at 337.5mhz (effective 675mhz).
    Again, the Radeon 9800 Pro is superior in architecture.
    Both cards can support dual displays, both having a DVI and a VGA port. A big difference is if you use OS X Leopard. Again, the Radeon card stands supreme, with many OS 9, or "legacy" Geforce cards loosing dual display ability in Leopard. This problem is often reported here.
    If, however, the majority of your work is in OS 9, the Geforce4 Ti is a better card, with better native support +in OS 9+. The Radeon 9800 Pro came much later than the last OS 9.2.2, so it doesn't have the benefit of native 3D drivers. It works fine as a basic graphics card in OS 9, but doesn't support accelerated 3D as well as the Geforce4 Ti.
    As for price, since we're comparing flashed cards, the Radeon 9800 Pro costs the same (as the Geforce4 Ti) from a very competent, reliable seller, though you have an extra $10 in shipping.

  • NVIDIA VS ATI for HD?

    Hi everybody,
    I am on the verge of upgrading my graphics cad in my 1st gen 2.66 GHz MacPro 1.1 (2006). When I use EyeTV the video often stutteres or stays on a still frame but the sound continues. I am thinking that maybe the original graphics card either can't handle it anymore or it's dying. I want to get into HD video editing and I think I will need a better graphics card.
    I am hesitating between these two models:
    1) NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (early 2009)/ Tiger and above;
    2) ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010)/ Snow Leopard only.
    I have not yet upgraded to Snow Leopard but will be forced to if I go for the Radeon.
    One of my internal HDDs is still running on Tiger by fear that some software would not run on Leopard or Snow Leopard yet.
    Any thoughts or comments? Shall I take a leap of faith and go completely Snow Leopard even though I read some horror stories?
    Rio

    Firmware is wrong for us, EFI32 isn't supported. ATI has used a different method and supports both EFI32 and EFI64.
    GT120 is as underpowered - but okay for 2D - as a card can get. Notice that it is still sold but nothing newer, now it is all ATI it seems.
    I would say 10.5.6 which came on DVD and last such, or 10.5.8, and while there were some apps and driver issues that kept some on 10.4.10, again, surprised you didn't upgrade that.
    The GTX 285 was iffy and 10.5.7+ but only for 2008 or later, which was the first model to have EFI64.

    Adobe is the biggest media encoding market with AME, yet it doesn't support quick sync yet? wtf. Adobe gives very  little detail as to what it actually does support, like does it use  CUDA or Stream to speed up H.264 rendering or is it just using the GPU  for other not very often used speedups rather than the rendering which is what we  all want sped up?
    When will AME support quicksync and what does AME currently support for rendering speeds via CUDA and Stream?

    See this thread for details. If you have questions about what is processed using CUDA, ask on that thread.
    Encoding and decoding are not processed using CUDA.
