Nvidia performance is starting to annoy me...

Ok, maybe this post is a troll but the performance I get with my nvidia (FX5600) really annoys me.
Seriously, I use linux since 5 years and I always recommand nvidia card to new users.
But, the last 2 or 3 release of their drivers are so wrong.
1- I got strange line when I listen a movie on dvd or from my hdd.
2- KDE4 is slow as hell (my notebook has an poor intel card and it's fine)
3- Some screen corruption when I login/logout.
I tried their beta drivers, some tweaks from nvidia forum and nothing works.
I know my card is not a really powerful card but I am supposed to able to listen a f****g movie without problem.
I got the impression than linux move forward and nvidia move backward.
Soon, I will buy a new computer and I thing I will move to ATI.
What do you think?

*edit* No, your card is still supported by the unified drivers, have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers? I know there was a bug in the latest nVidia drivers and KDE4 that are supposedly fixed in the Beta drivers

Yet Another Nvidia Performance Issue (YANPI)

Hi everyone! First post here so excuse if I post this under a wrong category. Also excuse my english.
Straight to the point, I've been using my laptop with Gnome and Compiz Fusion for a while and until not long ago everything was working perfectly smooth and all. I don't know if it is related to an upgrade or what but I didn't change any configuration. The problem itself is that all the 3D rendering is done by the CPU even though Nvidia Performance Level goes to Level 2 (Nvidia 8400M, NV GPU Clock 400 MHz, NV RAM Clock 400 MHz). Glxgears shows a performance of at least 1300 FPS but the processor level goes to 80% (Core 2 duo). I went to System Monitor and I saw that glxgears was eating one of my processors and part of the other.
Here are some facts:
Direct rendering is on (glxinfo | grep direct)
nvidia-settings -q GPUCurrentPerfMode -t returns 1 while glxgears is running (2D Mode rendering)
nvidia-settings -q GPUCurrentPerfLevel -t returns 2 while glxgears is running (Nvidia Performance Level)
nvidia driver version: 190.42

... Compiz has always used up a lot of CPU usage, but that's not an indicator that the graphic card not doing the rendering.
The 60 fps glxgears you see is probably vertical synchronized one and that's why it doesn't eat CPU, but understand this, in complicated graphical application there is a lot of work for the CPU, not just the GPU, and the latter often results bottlenecked by the former. Read a random CPU review/benchmark on the Internet and you'll see how different CPUs result in different frame rate in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky or WoW for example, but in Games like Crysis different CPUs don't affect the framerate, because the game is too heavy on the GPU for the CPU to have influence. It's completely normal for Compiz and X to eat up 50% CPU during effects, it's just the way they are designed to work, and don't search for a problem with your graphic's card.

GE60 0ND, 100% HDD activity ruins performance and start up time

Basically lately my laptop has begun starting up with 100% HDD activity and the odd occasion with it as well and that completely hults my laptops performance and is VERY ANNOYING, this ever happened before so I'm assuming something has gone wrong and would hope someone can help identify the issue.
The most common cause of my 100% HDD activity and laptop performance dip is: System (ntoskrnl) NT Kernal and System.
Also have another issue that makes me close to strangling a random person and that is updating and reconfiguring can take 30 MINUTES TO AN HOUR TO DO..................................... ............... Please tell me there is a solution for this, as I can't be the only person with this issue.

The 100% HDD activity sounds really strange.....Almost sounds like there is something else going on. Like you have a virus or trojan.
As far as the updating and reconfiguring, there's a thread here SOMEWHERE (I can't remember the name, but it's in the notebooks forum) that explains how to fix it. I would do a forum search in this forum for "Windows 8 updating reconfiguring" and you should be able to find it there. You're not the only person who has had this issue.

Query performance from start to variablescreen in a webtemplate

We have users who complain about performance when starting webtemplates which have some variables. Sometimes the queries run on time out before the variable sreen appears. The variables are open for user input, they are not executetd by a user exit or something.
So I am responsible for administration of the application from IT side, I would be happy to hear about a hint to control the response time in the segment from start to variablescreen so I can find aout the reason for the problem (Perhaps: ST03N, RSDDSTAT which parameter?)

Poor Performance after start up and Frequent Crashes

I have a brand new imac i order a little over 6 months ago, i immediately migrated my old imac's files to the new mac and everything worked great but then slowly began to degrade in performance and now i have nothing but problems that have gotten worse.
The first problem occurred with a slow performance speed after about a month of amazing performance.
Then I noticed the new magic mouse i had ordered with the computer would lose connection with the computer causing it to crash, also the new mouse would not hold a charge for long. My last magic mouse did not have this issue.
My computer would fall asleep and then i could be unable to wake it by using my mouse, even plugging in an apple pro wired mouse would not work, i had to turn the power on and off to restart
My bluetooth was acting funny trying to connect to devices i hadn't authorized
Then came a kernel crash.
Then came apple 3 tired support who after weeks of diagnosis over the phone were stumped.
I tried the following to fix the problems myself:
reset the Pram
Repaired Disk Permissions
Checked the hardware
reinstalled the OS
Checked for and installed all software updates
Reset the SMC
Ran 3rd party software "mackeeper" to optimize my files and check for viruses
Clean up unneeded files so plenty of memory
And finally downloaded a 3rd part program called "idrefrag" to defrag my system files.
nothing worked
I was unable to take additional time to deal with the issue, i work and attend school online and was extremely busy during the summer so i had to just deal with the issues because being without my computer was not an option i had.
After my busy summer ended, the problems had only gotten worse
Now, not only does the mac fall asleep and not wake up and not respond to the magic mouse to wake up or reconnect when the mouse and mac lose signal, but now when i plug in a usb flash drive to my external flash drive port, it's like playing russian roulette, half the time it's fine, the other half the computer freeze upon insertion of the drive. I shouldn't have so much anxiety plugging in a 8gb flash drive.
but now on to the worst part, before the summer when i had to restart after crashes it was normal, but now when i restart, the computer acts like it has to remember how to even be a computer again. Upon restarting after the classic Mac tone:
My mac desktop begins to reload, although the icons on the top right appear then disappear and then appear to load back up very slowly.
Moving files to another folder or tp the trash is painstakingly slow, i get a message saying "preparing to move file" that goes on for 10 minutes.
Simple tasks like trying to copy and paste or access my "places" on the side bar like "movies, "Pictures" etc cause a pinwheel and then each "place" has to load all the files as if it's searching the computer for them all before i have access to them, this can take 5-10 minutes
When i click on an application from the dock to load, it just bounces for a while and then finally starts up but takes 5 minutes or more to be able to access without a pinwheel
Overall the computer basically forgets how to be a computer and has to relearn how to do the simplest tasks, the next 24 hours is plagued by pinwheels and slow performance and then it acts fine again, but i can never shut it down or it start all over again, so i just let it fall asleep when not in use and cross my fingers that when i come back it will respond to the mouse and wake up, half the time it does, the other half, i have to restart by holding the power button down and then pressing it to start up again.
I had to just adapt, so i have a good system down now and so when I restart i run the system disk utility and repair the HD 1 & 2 's permission which always seems to have a lot of issues and that kinda helps speed along the 24 hour relearning process. But i shouldn't have to do all this stuff, i spent 3,000 on this computer, i bought all the upgrades and after a couple of months of amazing performance i was left with a time bomb and 3 tier apple support who have no idea where to go and now wont even call me back despite my paying for 4 years of apple care, I am at a total loss of what to do, i can't afford to send the machine off for diagnosis and repair and frankly think Apple should send me a new machine since not only does the mac itself present problems, but so does the new magic mouse, and the rechargeable batteries and charger i purchased from them as well.

Thats a shame, you should be enjoying your mac!, what was the final outcome of the Apple support guys?. I think if it were me and i had tried tried everything that you have including the support tech. i would be pressing for a replacement mac.

Performance of start and Default macro

Hi Siva,
You need to keep the macro under Level Change to make sure the macro executes when you drill-down. A start macro will not necessarily execute after you drill-down or drill-up. The default macro will strictly not execute immediately upon drill-down or drill-up. It will execute only when you have made some changes and hit enter post drill-down or drill-upp. This that point in time the default macro will not kick in.
Please see the standard macros defined in the SNP94(1) data view. The Stock Balance, Safetry Stock/Reorder Point, Day's Supply macros are set as default. So these will execute everytime there is a change in the data. The Determine Workdays macro is set as Start and Level Change. The result of this macro is a pre-requisite for computation of the Day's Supply macro. However the values computed by this macro will not change within a session (determined by the SD Calendar for the location) hence there is no point executing it as a default macro (reduce the system load). So its run as Start Macro. If you drill down by location then you need this macro to execute again as the SD Calendar for each different locations can result in different values. Based on that the Day's Supply Value will be recomputed. Hence its important to set it as a Level Change macro as well. On the other hand as the Total Demand, Total Receipts and Stock data changes the Day's Supply value also needs to change - hence the macro is set as Default macro.
It is important to note other Standard macros (i.e. Start and Level Change) execute before the Default Macros.

T430 - Terrible nvidia performance

I've just received a Core 17, 8GB T430 running Wind 7 Pro with Intel HD 4000 and nvidia NVS 5400M. There appears to be a number of problems with the nvidia card.
I can't seem to get anything to use nvidia unless I force it in the BIOS.
When I do force it, performance is about 1/10 of the Intel card. The game "Saurebraten" falls from 200fps to ~20fps.
The "Run with graphics processor" right-click option is always greyed out.
When I add "Sauerbraten" in the nvidia control panel and say it should use nvidia, the game always reports it is using Intel.
I tried similar tests with Kubuntu 13.10 using Bumblee and the behaviour was the same.
So in summary: I can't get it to use Optimus and when it runs nvidia the performance is terrible. All tests were done using the laptop's LCD screen whilst connected to mains power.
Can anyone guide me to diagnosis/fix? I've been all over Lenovo support and can't seem to find any information.

Found the issue. The laptop arrived with me having some very strange power settings. "Airplane Seat" had been set and this severly throttled the nvidia card. Once I disabled that, things were good.
How this also affected Kubuntu, I am unsure. I am just happy the situation is now resolved.

Nvidia performance level issues (PowerMizer)

Hello there.
I got recently a new laptop and thought, that would be a nice moment to switch from Ubuntu to Arch-Linux.
Everything works better than expected (after a few tweaks of course). Unfortunately this doesn't apply to my:
Nvidia Quadro FX 1800M (1024 MB DDR5, 72 CUDA Cores)
I have the latest proprietary drivers installed ( 260.19.21 / Linux-x86_64 ) and I can play games and 3D hardware acceleration works.
The graphic card supports 3 performance levels (found in nvidia settings -> PowerMizer: 0 [low] - 2 [high]).
However, the powermizer switches only between 0-1, the highest will never be used.
Even if I play warsow with 1920x1080 and other graphic intensive settings, I got ~60 Fps, the game lags a bit but powermizer stuck at level 1.
I tried a lot of different settings in modprobe.conf and xorg.conf.
For example:
Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x0"
or
Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerDefault=0x3; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x1"
Neither works as expected.
Has anybody a similar behavior?

Nvidia Performance Level 3 - MSI GT780DX

Hiya all,
I'm running Arch on an MSI GT780DX, with an Nvidia 570M. At the moment I'm running Arch-CK 4.0.5-2-CK (but over the many many many months I've been dealing with this issue I've ran many kernels to no avail - stock kernels from the inception of v4, and all incarnations of liquorix) with the nvidia-ck 352.21-1 drivers.
For the life of me, I can't get this card to clock properly. I've enabled coolbits, added powermizer options in my xorg, all do absolutely nothing. The card stays at performance level two.
This is what my nvidia-settings looks like in the Powermizer tab.

In Windows, MSI provided an overclocking utility which when I hit P1 above my keyboard, performance level 3 would kick in. Linux has no such tool. My guess is that the overclocking utility wrote to registers on the card. If that's the case, how on earth can I do think in Linux?

Monitor dimming after less than a minute really starting to annoy me...

This is my first post on here... and I'm posting because I've just started getting really fed up with how the display slightly dims after a minute or less of me not typing or moving the cursor... If I need a page open to read, I have to constantly touch the trackpad in order for the light to come on again so I can see what I'm reading...
I have looked ALL OVER the settings, and the only thing I can find to change is how long it takes for the computer to go into sleep mode... and there's is another thing where you can check it to have the display fade before going to sleep.... but even if I uncheck this, then instead of the display fading, it goes completely black after a minute or less...
I just want to adjust the amount of time it takes for the display to dim... Please! Is anyone else annoyed with this? I can't even watch a youtube video without being interrupted about 4 times by the screen fading...

NVIDIA performance

Hey there
Thanks to everyone who helped me getting Arch installed. Everything is going great now, sound is working, using kernel 2.6.3. But, for some reason gltron and celestia (and i'm guessing other 3D type stuff) are running incredibly slow. And on glxgears I get less than 200. The NVIDIA screen appears when I do startx so the NVIDIA driver is working...I can assume. Iv'e read through various posts about NVIDIA drivers, but that generally seems to be concerned with installing them
But maybe I installed it wrong?
I downloaded the source for 2.6.3 extracted it to /usr/src
then linked 2.6.3 to /usr/src/linux, or something to that affect. It all seemed to install ok anyway.
Sorry if this seems a bit vague? Iv'e rotted my brain trying to figure this out
Oh and thanks for producing the best Linux distro iv'e ever used.

I don't know if this will help, but here are a couple of things for you to try. 1) make sure you're using the correct BusID in your XF86Config-4 file. You can use lspci (from pciutils pkg) to find out what it should be.
2) Take a look at the nvidia documentation again. I believe there is an option to the driver to tell it to use its own internal AGP interface rather than trying to use the kernel's agpgart.
There might also be something in the nvidia docs specific to your card. The single binary driver supports a boatload of cards, and there may be special tweaks you need to make to squeeze out the best performance.

Combuter boots into script mode! How do I perform regular start up?

I was on my computer (ibook G4) when the screen went black. It was still lit, but completely black. After closing it and opening it a few times, nothing changed, so I turned it off.
When I booted it back up again, it booted into the manual, black screen, white text script
mode, and I can't get out of it. All it says is :/ root #
After others did internet research for me and called Apple tech support (who weren't very helpful), these are the things I've tried that haven't worked:
typing /bin/fsck -fy after the :/ root#
(it ended up saying the HD volume was okay, and then i typed reboot, and it rebooted into
script mode still)
I also held down the following just after hitting the power button
to turn the computer on:
x
command
command + s
command + v
command + option + p + r (this is the only one that made the start up sound happen twice, but it still booted into script mode)
Every attempt either brought be to the :/root# screen again, or gave me more white text without ever helping me boot to my normal desktop. I've tried typing exit and reboot after the attempts, but to no avail.
I am from the US, but in Italy for the time being, and this is my only form of communication so I am panicking a little bit right now. This also means I DO NOT have my start up disk with me. Any help would be seriously appreciated.

Put the disk in the computer and restart while holding the C key down. You pretend you want to reinstall the OS and go through the first two steps, until the screen just after the language selectiion screen.
On this screen you will see a menu bar. Click Utilities in the menu bar, and select Disk Utility. When DU is up and running, do this:
In the list at the left, select your start up disk- the item you want to repair. (Be sure to select an item that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
Click Repair Disk.
When the repair is completed, quit DU and restart the computer.
