[nVidia] SATA II on NEO4 SLI Locked???

Does anyone know if SATA II ports on NEO4 Platinum SLI are locked?
I am looking to upgrade HDs in near future but I OC so I would like to know this. Coz if it is locked I'll wait for WD Raptors to come out on SATA II.

1,2,3,AND 4 ARE ALL ON THE SAME CONTROLLER. 5AND 6 ARE ON THE SILICON IMAGE CONTROLLER.
With the Neo2, only two are part of the chip, the other two require an external interface chip (note not an external controller). It's still a matter of debate if it's the 2 sata which use the interface chip, or those which don't, which are locked. Either way it's ports 3 and 4 which are locked on the Neo2.
I expected the same with the Neo4, but found using 3 and 4 caused disk corruption when the FSB was increased, and shifting to  1 and 2 solved it.

If you creat a signature (in profile) it will save you having to type your spec's  out each time or us looking for it. Use mine as a template.
What PSU are you using ? Can you list the power output ? (writen on side of psu)
Going from your specs you listed your graphics card is very hungery on power so I would suggest your psu isn't up to the job under load.
Post the spec and we will know for sure.

  • Neo4 SLI- No power?

I'm not sure if this is a forum for this, but I'm not sure where else I can turn.
This is the 2nd computer I've constructed, mind you my first one was back in 1996, but anyway I digress.
I get no response from the power switch when i try to power it on. Nothing responds at all.
I seem to have everything connected properly, here are the specs:
Case & Power Supply:  JPAC 512 BATTLE SV Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with LC-B500ATX 500w power supply (meets all requirements by the motherboard, however I had to purchase a 20 pin to 24 pin power converter in order to plug it into the board since the board only had a 24 pin slot, and the power cable was 20 pin)
The power switch cable is plugged properly into the Motherboard
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4/SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
    Processor: Athlon 64 3000+
    RAM: 1 GB (2x512)
    Video card: GeForce 6600GT 128MB
Hard Drive: 200GB Hard Drive SATA
If there is any more info you need let me know.
I have a strong feeling something is wrong with the power supply (however I just purchased it and all of these parts are brand new). I don't know how I can test it, because I don't want to break something.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Well i get a perfect response *before* i plugged in those connectors to the mobo.
But when i put them in it the system shuts down, the fans stop, the mobo light goes off, and I don't get any response from anything. Even after I unplug the connector and try to start over I get no response for a while. It's like I have to let it reset itself.
Ah, that would be the short-circuit circuitry of the PSU kicking in. Break power to PSU, let it be for a while, before you try again.
However, it is rather obvious that some of the connectors for switch, led, etc. that you attach is causing a short circuit. If you have connected the LEDs the wrong way, they eventually burn out (they work by allow current one way, and providing light, and blocking it the other way - for a time) and as such may become short-circuits. I would try to just attach the Power switch only, since you wont need the other things yet. Then I would power down and reattach the other connectors (making 110% sure that they are attached to the right pins) and disregarding the LEDs for now. If it works, at that stage, you know one or more LEDs are fried.

  • Confused - whats the difference between K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum and Diamond??

MSI web page says the Diamond has:
"Silicon Image's SATA RAID supports another 2 SATA II ports. Transfer rate is up to 300MB/s."
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=638
their Platinum page doesn't list the Silicone Image raid as a feature on the Platinum.
I have K8N Neo4/SLI Platinum and it has the Silicone Image raid - I'm using it now.
    Can anyone explain this?
Another question:  for both boards it shows:  "NV RAID (Software) - - RAID function available for ATA133 + SATA HD drives or 2 SATA HD"
How can the Raid fuction work for ATA133 drives since the cables for SATA and PATA are different?   What do the mean Raid for 133?
    Thanks!!!

  • Installing CPU in a Neo4/SLI?

Hey all im just wondering if the Neo4/SLI board comes with a ZIF socket? In the manual it sais to press down on the processor so it doesnt move around with locking down the lever. Ive read elsewhere though that pressing on the processor can damage the pins. I dont know what to do, should i just set the processor in the socket and push down the lever, or should i press firmly on the processor while pushing down the lever?

ZIF stands for Zero Insertion Force so no you don't have to.
I gently place the CPU over the socket and it should fall into the socket on it's own.  I then press down very softly on the CPU as I lock the lever, just to make sure the CPU stays level.
I think when people say don't push down they are trying to say that there should be no resistance as it enters the socket.  You don't need to apply any force while it enters the socket, gravity is sufficent

  • MSI K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum / HDD_LED Problem

    Hello,
First off I would like to say that MSI boards rock! I've always been happy with them, in fact this is my fourth MSI board. The board is K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum.
Unfortunately, I'm having a problem with this one. The problem is minor, but it shouldn't happen, at least I don't think. The problem is that even though the hard drive activity wire is properly connected to HDD_LED, it is not working with my SATA drive. No light at all!
I read in newsgroups that there are people with this same problem (although not necessarily with this same board). I haven't found a solution to this yet. So my inquiry here is:
    1. Is there anyone else with this exact board with a SATA drive that can confirm his/her HDD_LED light is also not working with a SATA drive?
    2. Does MSI have a fix/solution for this?
    Thank you.

THere is a positive and negative side on those pins have you tried flipping it over?
This has got to be one of the biggest "pains in the a&&" in setting up a new mobo and connecting it to a new case...

Well if you can't see the serial number, then yes. (I never write that crap down)
No, you don't have to purchase anything, it's just the upgrade, looks like there might be more modifications needed that expected, for them to go to this trouble.
NEVER send them anything other than the board, you won't get it back! I don't recommend sending the board wrapped as a present or whatever master plan you may be cooking. It should be in a motherboard box, with the antistatic bag. If you don't have another box, then the original will have to do. You can always go to a local shop and ask if they have an extra box, or make a custom one..
Hey Glenn, you dont think they would appreciate it giftwrapped?
No but thanks for the info...cant I just put it in a UPS box inside an antistatic bag?  And Russ, I did keep the orginal box but for the life of me I cant find the label they talk about.  So I guess does it really matter if I send it back in the original box or just a box from my local UPS/Mailboxes store?

  • NOT Stable overclock on K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum 3.9 MOD + Venice 3000+

Hi, to all the people that make this forum so usefull.
    I´m wondering what i´m doing wrong? ??? ??? ???
    I have a Venice 3000+ E3 on a K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum and 1 Gb OCZ Rev2, TCCD.
    I have overclocked the CPU to 9 x 290 Mhz (2610Mhz) HTT 3X, MEM 1:1 290Mhz 2.5-4-3-10 1T 2.75V.
Memory is ok at this setting on MEMTEST v1.65.
I have tried Every VCORE possible to the CPU and Nforce Chipset and can´t make it stable.
I can work on windows with this settings but some times the computer locks. >:(
If any of you in the forum have a suggestion or recomendation, please Let me Know.
For a list of complete hardware of my rig, look at the signature.
    Thank for all.

I had this exact same problem, same RAM, same MOBO, with an X2 3800+.
For some reason it wouldnt overclock 1:1, and that RAM at wouldnt run at 2.5-x-x-x-1T timings (and i dont think it did 2T stable for too long either). So i was limited to either 2 or 3.
So right now I'm running my X2 at 2.55ghz and my OCZ Platinum 1gb TCCD @ 232(2-3-3-6-1T). Done so by using 183 divider at 255fsb. HTTmulti=3x
Does dual prime 95 for 10-12 hours (havnt tried for longer)
Oh also, for voltage, the RAM has 2.80-2.85, and NF4 gets 1.55-1.60v.

    Hello everyone,
My K8N Neo4/Sli non platinum board keeps detecting IDE raid at bootup.  Am I supposed to load the raid drivers on the floppy even though I don't have it enabled in the bios?  That may be a separate question but curious.  At this point it's more of a 10-15 second annoyance.  My machine radomly freezes in windows xp too.  Not sure if it's related.

LOL...or sometimes when O.C.'ing the CPU...SATA devices decide to take a vacation!!!!
i don't have any SATA devices on my machine, but i still couldn't figure out why after i stoped using RAID and wanted to switch to a 2X160 GB non-RAID config, after BIOS post the screen would hang at detecting NV raid. took me 3 hours to find out that if the optimized settings were loaded, the trick would be to disable the aggresive memory timings from the cell menu. strangely enough, it worked with aggresive timings and the BIOS i had when i got the mobo (it didn't hang at detecting and configuring raid) but not with the new ones. and this was without any OC.

  • Neo4/SLI doesn't recognize X2 3800+

Is it normal for the MSI BIOS and Windows XP (Properties of My Computer) to both say 'AMD Hammer Family processor - Model Unknown' when running an X2 3800+ in a MSI Neo4/SLI motherboard?
Does the processor still work at full capability this way?
My bios is the latest which is dated March/2005 which is the latest found on the MSI web site for this motherboard.
CPU-Z shows the Processor Name as AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (E4) but the Specification shows 'AMD Hammer Family processor - Model Unknown'

    Hi there,
March 1995 eh? that is surely the oldest BIOS on any Neo4!
If you meant March 2005, well there have been numerous BIOS updates since then. The latest non-beta BIOS is 3.8 dated Late Nov/Early Dec 2005.
The microcode for the new dual cored CPUs was included in the last 2 BIOS releases I believe...3.7 and 3.8. Anything older will not see the new CPU properly.
Update your BIOS but do not use the Auto download feature, download it and flash it by hand using a boot floppy (Win98 Boot floppy is ideal) and flash it from the ram drive that the boot floppy creates.
    K6dude
PS, Make sure you are not overclocking the CPU or memory whilst flashing the BIOS!

  • MSI K8N Neo4/SLI SB Live! 24 bit CA 0

    Hello,
I have the MSI K8N Neo4/SLI with SB li've! 24 bit sound card on-board and I want to buy a 5. speaker system with 3 digital input 3(2 optic / coaxial).
The digital optic or the digital coax output from the sound card can make 5. output so i can receive with the 5. system
    The system is a Panasonic SC-HT5 (http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...s&displayTab=S)
    Thank you.

The card cannot create 5., so if the audio you're playing isn't already an encoded 5. (AC3) stream, then the card cannot change that. If you're playing DVDs, they should work fine provided everything is set up correctly (including the DVD software, it should be set to SPDIF/Bypass).

    neo4 sli/platinum 7100+ 3000+venice. OC HELP

3.6 should be fine, I think, as I have not heard of any problems with it.  I have not tried it because I don't have any problems with 3.5 that might be fixed by 3.6.
    Configuration::
    Athlon 64 3000+ Venice
MSI K8N SLI Platinum (BIOS 3.5 - also worked with 3.2 and earlier)
    2 * 512mb DDR DIMM (Geil Value with 2.5 3 3 6 timings)
I have photographed a few pages in my BIOS and uploaded them here: http://www.tentonine.fast24.co.uk/msi/bios.htm
Some Geil Value RAM has worse timings than mine - if yours is not 2.5 3 3 6, then you will have to look up on the Geil website to see what all the other RAM timings should be.
If you just set your RAM to 150MHz and leave the timings on auto, it will probably not work.  The BIOS detects the best timings at 150MHz, but your RAM is actually being over-clocked back to 200MHz or more, so you need to manually enter the correct settings for 200MHz.
