NVidia Video Driver Causes Immediate freezing upon loading to desktop (K8N Neo2 Plat)...

after many a reinstall, order of loading drivers, i have finally traced my system's problem to the nvidia video drivers.  i have no clue what to do.  install everything (new nforce drivers, sp2, audio and ethernet drivers, windowsupdate, etc.  EVERYTHING except running the nvidia video drivers package and the system does not freeze.
as soon as the video drivers are loaded, restart and once i get to the desktop it freezes.  every single time.  go into safe mode, remove video drivers, restart and the system doesn't freeze.  fast write is disabled.  all dram settings at auto.  cool and quiet disableed.  system specs are:
MSI K8N Neo2 Plat MB (bios is v1.3)
AMD64 3200+ Winchester Core
BFG 6800GT OC AGP Video Card
2*512MB Mushkin Dual Channel Blue Ram (2-3-3-6-1T at 200Mhz)
120GB WD Caviar 7200RPM 8MB Cache IDE HD
NEC ND3520A 16x DVD Burner
CoolerMaster Wave Master Aluminum Case
Coolermaster RS-450-ACLY Power Supply
any ideas?

well i'll be damned.  spread spectrum.  it was spread spectrum being enabled.  there just isn't a more satifying feeling that thinking you figured out what was causing freezes and then finding out it's repeatable!!
spread spectrum on. freeze.  reboot.  freeze.  reboot. freeze.  spread spectrum disabled.  reboot.  no freeze.  reboot.  no freeze.   reboot.  no freeze.  spread spectrum back on.  reboot.  freeze.  reboot. freeze.
i love it.

  • Freezing issues with K8N Neo2 Plat & 6800 gt

Well I get random freezing during games. Sometimes it freezes for 5-10 seconds then comes back, while other times it just freezes and the sound comes back but not the game.
I had this problem when I first upgraded.
    K8N Neo2 plat

420-30? antec tru power supply. I cant remember exact number.

Now I first posted my problem a while ago and someone told me to try chaning the HT to 4x instead of 5x. So I did and it worked. It worked for a few weeks and now the problems have come back.
    Any Ideas?

Along with the above issues, I've also found that a lot of my gaming probs with the 6800 are due to it being a "bandwidth hog" & it's latency needs to be adjusted lower to enable the other devices on the PCI bus (i.e. sound card) to get enough bandwidth to function properly. This isn't noticeable until you start some heavy gaming with a lot going on at once...
If your game ever practically chugs to a halt when a lot of sounds are being produced, this is the main problem. Here's a way & some notes on how to deal with it. Just like every "tweak" though, it's not guaranteed to work for everyone but I got noticeable benefits from it.
    - D/L (I got it @ guru3D) PCI Latency Tool & give the "Read Me" a quick once-over. Write down the values for your devices, in case you need/want to change 'em back. Most items are well labeled - the 6800 & your sound card will be what you are most interested in. I wouldn't mess with the rest of 'em, as they deal with low level system items that are best left alone. Unless you are truly an Uber Geek!
    - The latency for my 6800 listed as a massive 248 clks! For some reason, I've read that ATI cards don't default at such a large value, which might explain why people don't seem to have as many performance issues with 'em. Anyhow lower the 6800 to a more "reasonable" value, like 128 or 64. 64 seemed to work best for me.
    - Save the settings, reboot & test it out. You can experiement with the sound card latency too, in order to find what works best for you, but I wouldn't set it at less than it's default value (32).
    Hope this helps.

  • Flash player causing blue screen upon loading video

    Hello,
I have recently bought a new system. Everything runs  perfectly except for one critical problem; I can't view flash videos or  anything played in a web browser by flash player.
Animated flash  advertisements will load to the first couple of frames, I will hear a  bit of noise and then a brief 1-2 second system hang and straight in to a  bluescreen. Same goes for youtube etc, might see a frame, if that, a  brief noise and hang/bluescreen. This has occurred since I have  purchased the PC.
I have attempted to fix the problem by updating  my graphics drivers to the latest, updating flash player to the latest,  updating sound drivers to the latest.
    System:
    AMD i5 750
    ATI  Radeon 5870
    Realtek audio
    Windows 7 Professional 32-bit
    Mozilla Firefox 3.6.6 -------------> Flash player 10.1
I am just viewing the bluescreen  dump file, there is no bug check string, however it seems to indicate an  AMD/graphics driver causing the conflict.

I don't know if it is Flash player particularly causing the problem, or if there is a conflict between it and some hardware.
    So,  can anyone help?

i'm having the same problem as the OP,
    System:
    Intel Q6600
    ATI  Radeon 4850 (drivers v10.9)
    Realtek audio
Windows vista home premium 32-bit (auto-updates)
    Chrome 6 & ie8  Flash player 10.1

    atikmpag.sys - Address 8F1E98B0 base at 8F1E4000, datestamp today
it started before last summer, it doesn't happen often but lets just say its making me rather nervous to use youtube and other sites that use flash now.
i've read allot of people have this problem and have traced it to using flash. i hope somebody at adobe is listening and not trying to blame hardware makers or drivers about this problem.
i disabled hardware acceleration, i hope this does the trick until a real fix can be found
btw if any flash animation gives a BSOD how else could we turn it off ? Think about it for a second people

  • FYI: To those getting no video at all during POST on K8N Neo2 Plat

I've been racking my brain all day/night fighting my new K8N Neo2 Platinum system. I first put together a minimal system with just memory, CPU/cooler, and AGP card and powered it up to make sure it would work. Sure enough I saw the Platinum POST screen and I went into the BIOS.
I figure all is good so I turn off the system and install the rest of the components.Like so many others I powered back up to the disheartening screen of nothingness. The D-Bracket showed all 4 LEDs green so I was baffled as to the problem. I tried various forms of restart with the same result. With a sigh I began reverting my system back to the original bare bones set up. Same result...black screen. I tried various CMOS resets after reading everything I could find. New result: black screen but POST would always get stuck with D-Bracket indicating "Initializing Floppy Drive Controller".
After trying various memory configurations, various CMOS resets, various AGP graphics cards, and many other things for several hours to no avail I finally got out an ancient PCI graphics card and was finally able to get video and enter the BIOS. I selected Load Fail-Safe Defaults and made sure to select AGP for the Primary Graphic's Adapter setting. I swapped the PCI card out and the AGP card back in. Still no video on the AGP card. I put the PCI card and AGP card in together and rebooted again. PCI card has video, AGP card does not.
I still don't have my problems solved but I at least wanted to let people who are getting no video on their AGP graphics card know that they may be able to get video on a PCI graphics card. As a side effect, for whatever reason, it appears that I get fully through the POST again and the D-Bracket lights up all the LEDs.
Hope this helps someone out there who is frustrated like I am and maybe someone can figure out what's wrong with the AGP graphics.
The BIOS version is currently W7025NMS V1.3 092404 15:57:09...I'm going to work on updating that next and see if that fixed anything.
Here's my system if it would work:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 90nm
    Gigabyte 3D Cooler-ULTRA GT
    OCZ 520W PowerStream
    OCZ 512MB DDR400 PC3200 EL Platinum Rev. 2 (4 sticks)
    BFG nVideo GeForce 6800 Ultra
I made the following substitutions to test:
OCZ DDR400 PC3200 EL Platinum Rev. 2 (1 stick in various slots, 2 sticks in various slots in single and dual channel mode)
    Corsair 512MB Value Select DDR400 PC3200 (1 stick in DIMM 1 slot)
Radeon 9700 Pro (old AGP card -- didn't work any better than BFG card)
Some old PCI card -- not even sure what it is (allowed me to see what was going on!)

Nope. Cable is definately not on upside down! =)
I get the same behavior on both floppy drives I've tried. The light only comes on when it tries to access it and it reacts as though I've put in a bad floppy. Thing is the floppy works on several computers and works on one of the floppy drives I used with this system, only while it was connected to another machine.
I was able to update the bios to v1.4 without using a floppy by making a bootable CD and flashing from there. Still no go. I think at this point I'm ready to concede that I do in fact have a motherboard that has gone south. I've tried every combination of option I can think of in the BIOS but the AGP and Floppy Controller both appear to be fubar.
Still, the one good thing that came out of all this is that I found out how to make bootable CDs. I'm sure to use that little trick over and over and that may make it so I don't really need these pesky floppy drives anymore at all! I'll make a post on this so we'll soon all be floppy free! =)

  • K8n Neo2 Plat Sata Raid 0 and IDE drive - Board won't detect IDE

I have my K8n Neo2 Platinum board configured just fine for 2 WD raptor sata drives in raid 0.  However, I need to add more space so I went out and got a Seagate 180gb IDE drive.  I plug it into the primary IDE slot and the board won't detect the new hard drive.  I have 2 DVD-ROM drives working fine in the Secondary IDE slot.  Why won't the K8n detect what is plugged into the primary IDE slot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Jeff

    Okay...
First, remove both of your DVD Drives and try connecting the new HD to the Secondary IDE Interface as master.  Use 'cable-select'.  If the drive then works, leave everything set to cable-select, and try installing the HD as master, and one DVD drive as slave, on the primary channel.   Next, set the other DVD drive to cable select, and install it on the secondary interface as a slave.
If the drive is still not detected after removing both DVD Drives, then try installing the DVD Drives onto the primary interface.  If they work, then you've most likely got a bad HDD.  If they don't...  your mainboard may be bad.

  • Copying to and from external drive causes Finder Freeze

I recently purchased a Shintaro USB HD dock to archive my many Gigs of Video footage.
I plug it all in and powered up without problems. Plugged a SATA disk into the dock it showed up (it was previously formated in an FW drive)
The drive showed up on the desktop and the files on it were there as well. When I try to either copy files to or from the dock the copy window comes up works for about 40% of whatever file I'm copying and then Freezes.
I've tried several disks and all do the same.
I cannot relaunch the finder, I cannot stop the process in Activity monitor, all I can do is power down, restart and try again.
I have tried using both a USB hub and hooked direct to the USB card in my PowerMac but the same thing happens everytime.
When I look at the external drive it has all the icons there but all the files are Zero Bytes.
    Anybody got any ideas ?

    Hi Brett,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Use Disk Utility to Repair the external drives.
While still in Safe Mode, move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.

  • USB Drive causes Boot Freeze

I added a new 3T external USB drive and my Mac freezes on bootup if the drive is on.  Anyone know how to fix this?

Check: Apple / System Preferences / Startup Disk to verify that your Mac OS X disk is selected to startup from.
Try ejecting and turning off the External HD before shutting down the iMac. Then in reverse, startup the iMac and then turn on the External HD.
Alternatly: if there is bootable volume on the External HD that you want to boot from, turn on the External HD and then Startup the iMac in Startup Manager.

  • Update to 7.1 causes screen freeze upon closing from Safari and slow wifi connection.

I updated my iPad 3 last weekend.   Right after the update the screen froze and I had to restart it by holding the home button and on/off switch.  Ever since then the screen freezes a minimum of once a day. This normally happens when closing Safari.  I've also been kicked off of Facebook several times and brought back to the home screen.  Not to mention my wifi internet connection is running super slow at home and work. Any ideas of what this is happening?   My husband updated his iPad 2 and is not experiencing these issues.  We think the update may have been corrupted but not sure what to do.  Thanks in advance for help on this.

The screen froze again yesterday.  This time it happened while I was in the photos app.  The screen starts to shrink when I pinch it but it doesn't close all the way.  I get a small "thumbnail" of the screen which gets stuck.  I am very good about making sure I don't have a lot of open apps, I try to close them all everyday by double clicking the home button and swiping them up. If you have any ideas please let me know.  I am going to try and keep a log of when this happens, what is open in the background and which app gets frozen.  Thanks again for the help on the internet slowness.  It is working fine now.  Not sure if this makes a difference but this is a refurbished iPad 3 that is about a year and a half old.

  • Windows freezes upon loading...

    Hey,
I just bought a new 2010 13 inch macbook pro, and installed Windows 7 on it. When I boot Windows 7 I can use it for like 20 seconds and then later the mouse cursor gets stuck and nothing works. Both the keyboard and the mouse both dont respond to anything I do.
Just worth mentioning: I installed all the updates before installing Windows 7 and installed the windows 7 drivers after the installation finished.
Oh, it might be worth mentioning, on my OEM disk its says 1.6.3 for the osx version.
Please help me, what should I do?? Should I exchange the macbook in the applestore???
    Thank you in advance

Please help me with this problem!!!!

  • K8N Neo2 Plat freeze on windows splash

this is my second motherboard and i am once again having the same problem where the computer freezes on windows splash, just as it starts to show the windows xp and the loading bar. i have tried to format the drive and it loads all the necessary files and when it starts to actually load windows it freezes again.
i have swapped out power supply's, i have changed cpu's, i have changed hard drives, i have tried different cd roms, i have tried with 1 stick of memory in all different slots. i basically have tried everything. i currently have a 74 gig raptor hooked up to sata port 3, which is what i'll be using mainly. i have cleared the cmos and still no help. also, every once in a while it freezes at the MSI splash too.
PLEASE HELP!! THIS IS THE SECOND MOBO i am starting to get tired of MSI real quick...

Still waiting to find out what bios you flashed----The Motherboard or The Plextor!
Still waiting to know whether you installed the NV IDE Controllers.  Because if you did, the os is having trouble initializing a device, which is why your system is hanging up at that point.  The device it's having problems with is no doubt the Plextor IF you are running the NV IDE Controllers.
Disconnecting the device, as Supershanks instructed, takes that item off the ide channel and out of the equation---unless it's the Plextors' firmware you flashed.

  • K8n Neo2 Plat Freezing - FIXED!!

Hello all, I'm hoping that you can help me.  I've gotten some good advice on this board so far, but it hasn't fixed my problem.
My system stats are in my signature.  I originally built this system with a single Raptor Hard Drive, only 2 sticks of ram, and no sound card (I was using the onboard sound).  The system ran that way with no problems at all - it was rock solid.
About a month ago I added a second Raptor Hard Drive and set them both up as a bootable raid+0 array.  I also added 2 more sticks of ram, making 4 sticks total for 2 gig.  Finally, I added the X-Fi Extreme Music.
Ever since the changes I have been getting random "freezes" of the system - the mouse and keyboard stop responding, the screen freezes (I can tell what time the freeze occurred since the clock image is frozen in the corner) and the computer does not allow any inputs.  Ctr-Alt-Del does nothing.  The only way to recover is to hold the power button down for several seconds, turning the system off.  At that point I can turn it back on and everything runs completely normally - no problems at all until the next freeze.  The freeze can happen any time - it can take days, or happen (rarely) during windows startup.
What I have tried so far:
At first, my memory timings were off.  The auto settings were using 3-3-3-7, when my memory wanted 3-3-3-8.  I changed this, I also made sure it was running at DDR 333, and upped the voltage to the ram from 2.5 to 2.7 volts (Thanks for the help on all of this JayBee!!)  So now, my memory is running at DDR 333, at the correct timing of 3-3-3-8, at voltage 2.7.  Finally, I ran memtest86 for 18 hours (22 passes) and got zero errors.  I am still freezing, so I'm pretty sure it's not my memory.
Before I tried working on the memory, I futzed around with the new sound card.  I did disable the onboard sound in the bios (That's just setting AC97 Audio to [disabled], right?)  I have also totally uninstalled the sound card and done a clean sweep of the drivers, and I have gotten freezes without it.  So i'm pretty sure it's not my sound card.
Finally, I don't know how to test the raid setup, but I don't think that would cause freezing.  Wouldn't that just cause the hard drives to stop responding?  If I am missing something, let me know.
Oh, MSI support sent me the latest beta bios, ver. 1.C, and I have flashed that.
At this point I'm at a loss as to what to try next.  I'm considering wiping the hard drives and doing a fresh install of XP.  Is that worth a try?  What do you all think?

You did the right thing in the BIOS about disabling the sound.
The OS reload might be a good last resort, provided you've exhausted everone elses suggestions.
What I see you haven't tried is pulling the New Memory out. And returning the settings back to what you had. If the problems go away, then you know it's a memory issue, but more about timings or the way the controller and BIOS settings are dealing with your added ram. You could also try the new RAM alone too and see what happens.
If the problem continues even with putting almost everything back to the same way it was with exception to the new drive and the array. You may have introduced a new problem with adding the drive and more power consumption. However, since it's random (providing it really is random, and not when the system might be running too warm due to the added hardware and power draw) then it could be several things still. Heat generated in the case could lower power supply efficiency, and I've heard both good and bad about the Neo Power for these systems so the jury is out on that one. It could also be dirty power at the outlet because thos are very similar symptoms of a power issue, and finally a driver or OS problem..
Just some thing that came to my mind after reading your post. Perhaps someone else will have better suggestions, but that's what I'd be looking at anyways.
    Good luck

  • K8N Neo2 Plat + Nvidia Drivers = XP not booting?

I just got the Neo 2 Plat board, a 3000+ Athlon 64 and a few other toys including a SATA drive.  Well I install Windows XP Pro and everything comes up fine.  So I had a copy of the latest Nvidia chipset drivers which I install.  I then reboot before installing anything else, and guess what....XP will not boot any more.  It just hangs on a blank screen.  Now if I do not install the chipset drivers at all the computer works just fine...I am lost on this one.  Any help would be great.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply, don't mean to start off with a grip, the board has been great so far.  And yes the drivers I used were the latest from Nvidia's website.  I have one SATA drive (my boot drive).  Everything comes up fine in device manager, the only reason I tried to install the chipset drivers was being from the old school of VIA baords it is just the first thing I do when I do a fresh install.  But if in the new day and age I don't need to, then I guess I have no problem
Forgot no IDE drivers other then my DVD burner and CD-ROM and LS120

  • 2 SATA hard drives, one showing up, one not. MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum

Hello.  I just finished building my new computer (specs in sig) and I'm having a problem with my hard drive.  I have all the latest drivers and all that stuff.  Also, they are not in a raid config.
Both hard drives are connected to the motherboard on SATA connectors 1 and 2.  Both drives are working properly and recognized by windows, but only one of them seems to be enabled.  In the removable hardware window and the hardware manager, both drives are recognized.  However, when I click on properties, only one of the drives is enabled in the "device usage" bar on the bottom.
Also, when I go to "my computer", only one hard drive shows up.
Please help if you have experience with this motherboard and these hard drives, or if you know what the problem is and how to fix it.
    Thanks!

good , glad my tip have been helpful.
