NVRAM resets and "find my mac"

After wondering why "Find my Mac" was unchecking myself, I realized that performing an NVRAM reset will disable that feature until it's turned on again.
That got me wondering. If I were to have my laptop stolen, what's to stop a thief with a little know-how from just doing a quick NVRAM reset? My MBP is encrypted with FileVault 2, but still.

Yes, if the wiped the drive Find My Mac would no longer work. The can't reinstall Mountain Lion without your Apple ID or an Apple ID of their own.

  • MacBook and "Find my Mac" app Question???

I recently had my MacBook stolen. I have called the police. I want to try and detect where my stolen MacBook is. Are there anyways in which the thief can hide the MacBook from the "Find my Mac" app other than staying offline? Also, I have two user accounts on my MacBook (User 1 and User 2). Will the app "Find my Mac" still work even though the person is logged onto user 2? I have done nothing to the user 2 account. It's just a basic account for the family to use when they want to try out my MacBook. I believe there was no password on the user 2 account. Please shed some light on this issue. I want my MacBook back!!!

    Hello Ipanamick,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

As long as your lost Mac is connected to a Wi-Fi network and not asleep, you can locate it on a map. You can play a sound on it, lock it, or erase it completely if it’s connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
    Have a nice day,

  • My macbook pro has been stolen and i had icloud and find my mac installed. If the thief was to wipe my harddrive and use internet recovery, will my find my mac still work?

Hey guys, so I recently had my macbook pro stolen. I had my find my mac turned on and i was wondering if i could still track my laptop if the thief wiped my hard drive and the recovery partition, but if they reinstalled the mountain lion osx from the internet recovery would that erase the find my mac feature? Thank you guys for all the help. Just doing what i can to try and retrieve my laptop. Thanks

  • IMac and Find my Mac

The find my Imac feature is not working with Icloud. Any ideas?

You are using 10.6.4, that verison of OS X isn't supported by iCloud. This is cut from iCloud - Learn how to set up iCloud
Make sure your Mac is running OS X v10.7.4 or later.
If you don’t have the latest version of OS X, you can purchase it from the Mac App Store.
To get the most out of iCloud on your Mac, install OS X Mountain Lion (v10.8).

  • Quicktime File Crashing Both Quicktime App and Finder in Mac, but Not Windows

    Hi,
I have a drive full of Apple ProRes Quicktime files.  Almost all of them play perfectly, except 2.  Those 2 files have played in the past, but I've had problems with them.  They've come back to functionality in the past, but now they are not working again and I don't understand why.
Whenever I go to open the files with Quicktime Pro 7, Quicktime X, FCP 7, Adobe Premiere or Adobe Media Encoder, I get the spinning beach ball and not only does Quicktime crash, but the finder crashes as well.  If I go to restart the finder, it never comes back online and I have to restart my late 2011 macbook Pro.
I've tried repairing permissions and on the Macbook Hardrive and have used Disk Utility and Disk warrior on the hardrive containing the 2 quicktime files. Nothing has solved the problem.
At first, I thought the Quicktime files might have become corrupted, but I installed Windows 7, using bootcamp, on the same macbook, hooked up the external hardrive and was able to play the quicktimes perfectly in Windows with quicktime 7 (not pro, because I don't want to buy it just for windows).  So, there is some sort of incompatability between these two quicktime files and my Macboook.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on?
    -Scott

If you are on Windows Vista and trying to write something to
"Program Files" or its sub folders, write will not end up in the
right place as "Program Files" is protected. What ever you write
might go to a virtual store location. If that's the case try
    writing to app storage folder.

  • Users folder being hidden with iTunes 11.2 installed and Find My Mac enabled?

    http://www.osnews.com/story/27734/iTunes_11_2_update_hides_Users_folder_on_OS_X from http://www.osnews.com/comments/27734
Is anyone else seeing this? I am scared to upgrade iTunes in Mac OS X 10.8.5. :/

Thanks. Hopefully, Apple will give v11.2.1 directly if not already at v11.2.0.

  • No sound after Mountain Lion upgrade - is NVRAM reset safe?

Hi there, I've followed a few posts and tried out all of the offered solutions but, as yet, none have worked for me. I'm wondering - is it safe to do a NVRAM reset (I have a 2011 model 24" iMac)? Bit of a newbie, Mac is only 5 months old and was a PC man the rest of my life......
Everything was working fine then I decided to keep up to date and installed Mountain Lion. Now, output is greyed out in 'sound options' (so I cannot select). I'm getting 'startup' and 'notification' bleeps, but no regular sound (eg via programs, web or Spotify).
Sheesh if I had known this I really wouldn't have bothered with the upgrade.... (my first with a new Mac).
Strangely, also, under 'Purchased' in iTunes I still get the option to 'download' ML, although when I try to do so it correctly then informs me that it is already installed. All my other purchases have 'installed' against them.....
Anyway, the main issue I have is with loss of regular sound and any advice/recommendations would be most gratefully received, thanks in advance, Andrew (Scotland).

Thanks hpr3, tried that..... but it didn't work.
I notice that under 'sound' in system preferences I no longer have an option to select a device for sound output. Under the 'output' tab, 'Headphones' is associated with 'headphone port' but Soundflower (16ch and 2ch) gives no option for an output device (it has, literally, disappeared!).
Presumably if I can get an output device back, I'll get sound back.
I've read elsewhere that an NVRAM reset may fix if all else fails (but reading on from that there are posts as to what to do if your Mac fails to restart after an NVRAM reset) and I'm naturally a bit anxious as to trying this??

  • How Do I Keep "Find My Mac" Running in the Background Even When My MacPro is Closed?

When I close my Macbook Pro and it goes to sleep it shuts off the "Find my Mac" feature, When I log into my icloud it doesnt find my Macbook. When I open the Macbook it shows up in iCloud again. My biggest fear is that someone could steal my Macbook and I wouldnt be able to locate it because it will be closed and "find my Mac" will be turned off. How do I leave Find my Mac running all the time, even when the lid is closed?
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks.

You don't. Find My Mac works by searching for you mac when it connects to the internet. If the thief never connects to the internet or never opens your mac (you've got to wonder what use it would be to anyone else in either case, to be honest), then you'll never find your mac.
The only way round that would be to install its own GPS locator like some people do in cars. AFAIK, they haven't build one that'll fit inside an MBP body yet...

  • How to find the MAC version of your SW

  • Mavericks power nap find my Mac not working

I wanna know if anyone encounters problem on find my Mac when your MacBook is sleeping.
Mine doesn't work suddenly, obviously there is certain app that prevents it from updating location information during sleep.
    Here are the suspects:
    Utorrent
    Shiftit
    Xquartz
    Firefox
This is so frustrating. I tried wiping everything on my hard disk and find my Mac works. I will have to waste so many hours to test which app is the culprit. Find my Mac updates location every one hour during sleep, so I have to install one app and then wait for an hour to see if find my Mac works during sleep.
Does anyone have any idea or experience on this? I don't wanna waste time on it just to have find my Mac working again.
Apple support could only suggest reinstalling so they're useless actually.
I just started to use osx a month ago and already hate it!

    Just one question:
Are you able to find your mac everytime you want? Or just every hour?
I think that the ability to find your mac just happens once a hour, im wrong?
    Thanks

  • "Power Nap" & "Find My Mac" not working together

Is anyone else having issues with "Find my Mac" and Power Nap? Its supposed to be to find the MacBook air when it is sleeping but im not having any luck. my MacBook air has the latest firmware, and find my Mac is enabled under iCloud.
I can find my MacBook air when it awake. Just not with the power nap feature when it's asleep, Power nap is check on under Battery and Pluged in, and it's charge 100% and plugged in.
Any suggestions ? Or anyone else having this problem?

  • ICloud finds my MAC at wrong location

ICloud finds my MAC about 2/10ths of a mile away, outside of blue circle.  My Mac has never been at that location.  Finds my IPhone in exact location.  Am using Find my MAC/Iphone for the 1st time.  Not a big problem, but makes me wonder.  Thought I should report it.

I was running my Macmini using Ethernet and I couldn't find the location of the computer. When I enabled Wi-Fi then Find My Mac started working ok. I then switched back to Ethernet connection and disabled the Wi-Fi connection and Find My Mac continued to work. I guess Find My Mac needs Wi-Fi to be switched on initially in order to locate the computer. This fixed my issue.

  • I have forgotten my administrator password and can't find my Mac OS X Install Dvd..what can I do?

I have forgotten my administrator password and can't find my Mac OS X Install Dvd to reset it, what can I do?

    OK, try this:
    http://osxdaily.com/2010/08/10/forgot-mac-password-how-to-reset-mac-password/
Be very very careful if you decide to use Terminal. Even a small typing error can cause a disaster. And terminal commands must be typed exactly as shown, including spaces.
    Good luck.
p.s. Your Apple ID and password - different from the computer log in password - are what you used to get to this discussion.

Do you mean that you did a soft-reset ?
Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data and also Clear History
If that doesn't fix it then try closing Safari via the iPad's multitaskingbar and see if it works when you re-open it :double-click the home button to open the taskbar and then swipe or drag the Safari app's 'screen' up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
After trying the above you could also do a soft-reset (even if this is what you've already done it might be worth trying after clearing Safari's cache and closing the app via the taskbar) : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
