NVROM virus on iBook G4 ??

Hello cruel cruel World .
I have tried with 4 different versions of Linux or UNIX for PowerPC .
Before that , I tried to dual-boot with a de-facto Mac OS 10.5.(?) Leopard for PowerPC .  I picked a BSD UNIX OS .
Initially it worked then it froze and the hard drive crashed (FAT broke.)   Perhaps a rouge versioning .
Then I used a LIVE CD of UNIX PowerPC which on the Home Site said it has a GUI with the text prompt command window .  It was false there was only a text mode prompt .  During installation without a-priori mandate asked for my PASSWORD to MY ROUTER !
After that I have tried using LIVE CD and it does not install .  And the command prompt at the BIOS screen did alll types of weird things due to what I suspicious of as NVROM virus .
I definitely wants the original Leopard OS not an imitator(?)
Bye cruel world .

Make sure the iBook is capable of running Mac OS X 10.5.

If so, Leopard is probably going to cost you more than the iBook is worth.

  • Help! How to check for virus on IBook G4

Okay, I have been getting the multicolored swirly ciricle thing when I try to do anything online or though word on my Mac, it is significantly slower and has done this before. The tech support guy showed me how to scan for viruses and restore it after they were found. Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Welcome to the iBook Discussions!
Since there have not been any viruses released in the wild that will infect a computer running Mac OS X, it's not a virus that is causing the trouble. If all you want to do is search for a virus, you can use ClamXav. But, we can be fairly certain this won't really clear-up your trouble. Is there any other troubleshooting you've tried? Have you used the Disk Utility (in your /Applications/Utilities/ folder) to "repair disk permissions"? Have you started up from your Mac OS X install disk and used the Disk Utility there to "repair disk"?

  • I need a anti-virus for my ibook g4 (10.4.11)

my ibook g4 has all latest software update installed and i need a anti-virus scanner/remover, i need a cheap or free one.

    Hello,
I use Clam Xav on all my Macs, it's also free and does not abuse the system resources like paid Ani-Virus's do.
Just search the web for Clam Xav

  • Ibook virus or what?  !!!

MACOSX v.10.3.7 About a week ago something wiped out my addresses, stored email and all my bookmarks in three browsers etc etc. Up to this point I have been doing routine maint. every month such as repairing the HD and permissions. I realize now there is more I should be doing. I have Norton anti-virus 10 but have just noticed that even though it is set to scan everything coming in to the computer, files on CD, internet, etc., the cursor (which on one of my older mac's changes to the Norton shield when it is scanning) does not do the same on this ibook with system 10.3.7. I have re-installed all or most of the lost data and the system seems to be running but has some new issues. Now when I boot the system I get an icon of the earth in the center of the screen which flashes off and on about every second. Usually flashes about 10 or 15 times then the icon changes to 3 alternating icons. One looks like a file folder but is flat not three dimensional or shadowed. One icon is a large question mark. The last one is a mac face like used for the finder. They flash another 15 seconds or so then the computer goes in to it's normal boot process. Every day or so I see other functions that have been altered. One recent example is the mail software used to tell me who the mail was from, how big the file is and what do I want to do with it. It doesn't do that any more and I can not find a preference where that feature can be set. Also at the end of permissions repair the following info is posted on the repair menu: " We are using special permissions for the file or directory. /System/Library/. File systems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are 33261". Today when I booted there was a new folder on the desktop labeled" library". It has a ton of folders inside. One of the folders inside the library folder is labeled Mail. Inside that is a file (472KB) labeled " LSMMAP2". It will not open saying there is no default program to open the file. One last note, about the time I lost my address book, fav's etc., I had installed driver software for a LaCie DVD burner.
If anyone has one or all of the answers I would love to hear from you.
    Thanks, MarvB

This copy of the Library folder belongs directly inside your home folder, not on the desktop. Move it to the folder with the house icon in the Finder's sidebar. If there's a Library folder there, open the home folder, rename this item, and then drag the folder back. Moving this folder back may also resolve some of your other issues.

  • Anti Virus Software for New iBook - Any Need for it

    Hi,
Is there any real need to buy any Anti Virus software for a new iBook running Tiger.
If so what would be the best software to Buy.

    Hello Simon,
As has been stated there are NO viruses for Mac OS X. None!
Some will say that NO form of protection is required. Some will say that there is a good case for having at least some protection.
There is an interesting article here
No need to spend any money now!
    Regards

  • Could my ibook have a virus, if so, how do u fix it

hey, recently my ibooks clock and calander have been switching to a date in 1937 almost every time i restart my computer. a message pops up that says "your calander has been set to a date before 1937, this may cause some programs to behave erratically". i switch it back, and lock the settings, but the next time i restart, it goes back to 1937. i'm thinking that it is a possible virus, but ive been reading on the internet that it is not possible for a computer with mac os x to get a virus. anyways, what could be the problem, and how can you fix it? thank you so much for your help.
    cheers
    lindsay

I sure hope it's only the battery. This happened to my first Ibook 800mhz and Apple determined it to be the logic board.
It was under warranty and was repaired and worked great afterwards. Geof

  • IPad ibook virus

    Hi,
I have deleted all books on my iPad's ibooks and unsynced iPad's ibooks with Mac, but ibook storage usage on ipad is 811mb! Is this the size of the malware?
    thanks.

It's not a virus. You may have a hardware problem with the touch screen. This can cause spurious touches to be seen by the iPad software.

  • What caused the iBook problem?

I'm writing this for my wife, as she's unable to use her iBook for more than a few minutes before it locks up.
I'm serving in the military overseas. My wife and I both use Apple products to chat, email, etc. When I spoke to her yesterday, she was frantic. Her iBook G4 apparently started making a strange noise and then stopped working altogether.
I asked her what she had tried, and she explained that she spent over an hour on the phone with Apple support (I knew AppleCare might come in handy). The first support person she spoke with was, for lack of a better term, an idiot. This was confirmed by the third support person she spoke with. I'll explain later.
The problem was that when she tapped her spacebar to wake up the computer, it didn't wake up completely. She got a grey screen, Apple logo, and that was it. I told her to be patient, that maybe it was reseting after an update (that was before I knew about the 10.4.6 update being available).
    Her computer auto-updates every Monday.
I had her turn off the computer by holding down the power button. I then had her disconnect the power cord and remove the battery. I did this on a hunch (just in case the computer had a heat problem). She reconnected the power cord, pressed the power button, and it was back up and running - for about 5 minutes.
Then the computer began making a not-so-funny noise again, and the spinning-beach-ball-of-death reared it's ugly head and wouldn't go away.
The first support person had her use the install/boot disk that came with the computer. That was Panther. We're using Tiger. Bad idea.
When the boot/install disk did not appear to be working, the first support person had her abort, and she was prompted with little phrases like "are you sure you want to quit, doing so now may damage your files" or something like that.
He just had her keep clicking "OK" and eventually got tired of talking to her and told her the hard drive was bad and that she was SOL.
The second support person was apparently too busy to troubleshoot any further and cut directly to "sorry, you're SOL".
The third support person was a little more helpful in that he talked her through connecting the iBook to her G5 PowerPC iMac to attempt pulling the files over to the iMac (she had already resigned herself to the fact that the iBook hard drive was on it's last leg).
She had asked the first support person about doing this and he said that if the files were corrupt on the iBook, they might corrupt the iMac, and that it was a bad idea. Not a very bright guy, considering the files would be copied to a folder, and wouldn't overwrite the iMac's system files.
She started to transfer files and the iBook froze again. She repeated the steps I had her do earlier, managed to get a CD in the the drive, copied a few folder successfully to the CD, checked the CD to see if the files were there (success!) but then the iBook died before she could get the CD out. She's working on holding down the track pad button while rebooting to see if it'll spit out the CD as I type this.
So, in addition to wanting to know how to resolve the problem, I'd like to know what caused it.
What caused so many people to have alleged hard-drive problems within a day or two of each other?
    Is this Apple's first virus?
Is this the work of a disgruntled Apple employee working in the updates department?
Is this an evil Apple plot to force us to by MacBook Pro's that won't run Virtual PC?
Will running the 10.4.6 hurt or help the situation?
Why is there such inconsistency in Apple support and aren't they supposed to log their trouble-shooting steps performed thus far?
My wife has been using Mac's for over 9 years. I've only been using them for 2 years. Up until now, I've had a lot of confidence in Apple to be a solid platform, even if not the fastest platform. This experience is not inspiring me to purchase another Apple computer.

    SOL?
Her files probably won't fit on a CD; unless she has less then 700Mb.
    1."Is this Apple's first virus?"
    Negative
    2. "Is this the work of a disgruntled Apple employee working in the updates department?"
No, I don't think so. Apple tries these out to try and avoid problems with their updates. Things happen that are not expected. They wouldn't put anything out unless they thought it was ready.
    3. "Is this an evil Apple plot to force us to by MacBook Pro's that won't run Virtual PC?"
First off, look at #1 and think about what platform is notorious for virus problems (Mac has had not had any virus out breaks so far). There have been some "malware/macro" software that was meant to mess with Apple Computers. The most recent that was was over exaggerated was nothing special; MacWorld worked pretty hard to get it to effect their machine. As long as you know what you are downloading and where you are getting it from, you should have no problem.
If you want VPC to work on a MacBook Pro; don't look to Apple. You should talk to Microsoft's Mac Department because Apple announced the Universal Binary switch a long time ago (with developer help) so that software companies could make the switch easier. If anyone is to blame; its Microsoft [they are busy working out their problems with Vista; I am guessing it will be awhile before you see VPC for MBP;) ]
"Will running the 10.4.6 hurt or help the situation?"
My opinion would to just reinstall Mac OS X after backing up the hard drive. That would probably fix your problem. Once OS X is installed; update the software.
"Why is there such inconsistency in Apple support and aren't they supposed to log their trouble-shooting steps performed thus far"
Once in a while Apple's personnel may make human errors. The second one you talked to may have seen her work-up and just reiterated what was said. They have resources we don't, but they can't really go beyond them because they can't see the product, and they are just call support. You may have to send it in.
So in 9 years, you have had this one problem. We can't really tell you what is wrong with the computer because we can't see it ourselves; we can only give suggestions/ideas. Tell them her story, explaining her situation (military etc) and then see if they can help. She may want to bring it into her local Apple Store/Reseller. She can make a reservation on the website or at the store. She can get better feedback in person.
    Just some of my thoughts,

  • My ibook G3 trapped in darwin window, help!

    hi All,
my Ibook G3 was "trapped" in the "Darwin / console" window for 3 days and please kindly let me know how can i fix the problem and your advise are really appreciate, thanks & situations listed as below:
iBook G3, OS 10.3 (or higher with update)
day 1 : my OS9 is down so i start to use the OS10.3 platform and perform the rebuild the desktop for OS9, and also perform the disk repair from the install disk but all fail to use the OS9 platform. Then i install another new system(OS10.3) but i can't login (i don't know the login name & password)...
day 2/3 : so i use the install disk to reset the password but i think i do something wrong and more problems found - i was trapped in the "Darwin" window and i try the solution from this forum already (ie: start in Single mode, mount -uw /, chown root /, chmod 1775 /, exit), and i also use the intall disk to perform the "repair permission" command, but the black darwin screen still appears and says :
    Darwin/BSD (mms-Computer.local.) (console)
    login:
please let me know how can i fix the problem? and thank you so much!

In that case you had best find a say to backup what you don't want to lose. And in the future you should maintain backups to prevent having this type of problem.
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • IBook is dying? Or not. Help me!

For the past month or two my iBook G4 (about a year and a half old) has been randomly freezing on me. I was confused and panicked and called all my friends who knew about macs and did everything possible to fix it. I had been keeping it on most of every day in various stages of sleep for the past school year, and it hadn't gotten much use over the summer. When I got back in the fall it worked normally for a few weeks and then started just freezing. It would freeze whenever I tried to use it in class, or a second after I logged in, or after 30 mins to an hour of use. For a couple weeks I couldn't really use it for more than 15 minutes without it shutting down on me, probably twice in that period of time.
Here's what's confusing me: I ran a maintenance and a virus scan, I made sure that it was getting power because I always keep it plugged in as long as I'm not in class, and I made sure that it was off any time I wasn't using it. The problem seems to be getting better; It will still freeze maybe every other day but I can use it for at least a couple of hours before it does for the most part. Yet it still freezes when I take it to class or move it around.
The only thing I have not done (besides taking it to a tech) is erasing everything and starting from scratch.
    My questions are the following:
Should I wipe it and start over, or is it likely to be a completely different problem? If I should, I know I need to back up the files, but my computer doesn't seem to want to install the Backup Program (keeps telling me it won't open in various files or that it can't be read or something), so can someone help me with that?
I know it was suggested that someone else whose computer was freezing check to see if they have Applecare- I have no clue whether not I have it and would love it someone could tell me how to find out.
And finally... should I need to take this to an Apple store or something, should I take it back to the COMPUSA we bought it at? or go to an actual Apple store (if this is the case, does anyone know a location relatively close to Athens, GA?)
Thank you so much for helping me!!!

    hey there,
sorry to read that, one simple thing you could try that often bugs people on ibooks is taking any additional ram you have out, and put i back in place, that could explain why it freezes. If you don't feel confident enough to do it, take it to any apple store, they'll do it in a minute and shouldn't charge you. The best way to find out about your applecare is to call apple, they'll be able to tell you.
One last idea i have, your computer hates class, and would rather stay at home and sleep all day, just like any of us!
Hope you'll solve this problem, regards
    C

  • IBooks Author changed placed video size on it's own. Anyone else have this happen?

I'm creating a rather large ebook with iBooks Author (2.1.1) on Mac OS 10.9.2 (mavericks) . Currently over 350 pages typset. Was final proofing and ran into a font conflict over the weekend (Palatino was substituting), which miraculously resolved itself when I ran typical Mac diagnostics (so maybe a font got corrupted or something). So I was celebrating my victory when I noticed that randomly, a number of placed videos had changed size
I noticed because I purposefully set all video preview images at 285x214. I've found at least six that changed to 200 x 150 (which possibly is the default when you create a new video).
I just find it curious that this would happen for the first time, after I've been working on this book since last November (so about 6 months)
I did upgrade to Mavericks April 15th. But I was working on the book last Saturday and these issues did not show up. Took Sunday off. Then mid-day Monday, I started noticing the font issue. Then this morning noticed the resized videos.
This is what it changed it to:
This is how i originally designed it:
Of course, the change in size made the text reflow throughout the chapter. So now I'm going back page by page from the beginning to see if this annomoly only happened in this chapter or throughout the book. It didn't affect every placed video — only some.

Is there a way for you to disable the firewall and your anti-virus software? That should help.

Antivirus software is not really necessary on a Mac, however if you receive many emails and forward them to PC users it may help them. I don't use any AV SW on my Macs. If you want to use one to detect a virus on emails, get the freeware antivirus application for Macs - ClamXav @ http://www.clamxav.com/ .

  • Ibook g4 and intel

will there be an intel processor coming out for the iBook G4 so that a windows based operating system can be used on it????

Yeah you could say that ... the last count I saw was that there were just under 10000 known viruses for PC and ......ummmm 1 for OS X!
OSX is built on Unix which is inherently more secure. Also there are less Macs around - and less people who hate Apple than who hate Microsoft, so they are not as much of a target.
It was the virus situation that made me switch to Macs initially - although I now wish I'd done it 10 years ago. I used to Sell, repair and build PCs, but my life became one long string of people phoning me with a problem concerning a PC I'd sold them - which, 95% of the time turned out to be Virus or Spyware instigated.
If you put an unprotected PC on the internet, it will last around an average of 20 minutes before it gets a virus fron one of those IP address worms that just send themselves to random addresses from infected computers. Also programs like Norton take over the PC so much that they make it run like it has a virus anyway. (AVG is best if you need virus protection for your XP partition)
If anyone is thinking of installing Boot Camp it's probably because they want to either play games (which Windows has an uncontested lead in) or they need some program that's WIndows only. Keep it off the net in XP mode if you can.
Someone here recommended 'Parallels' as program that can run Winows in an ... ummm a Window in OSX (which Boot Camp can't). I've tried it and must admit it's great if you just want to run an XP (or any other OS) application. Very impressive - and very cheap to buy too - but no good for games. Let's me run the only Microsoft program I ever liked - Publisher.

  • Want to get an ibook + 1 question

I am looking at lap tops to get. I'm checking out a couple of PC notebooks and the ibook G4 (14 inch). Probably going to get the ibook. I was wondering if anybody could tell me anything that I should purchase with the ibook (i.e. more RAM or something like that). Also if you could share your experiences with it thus far and if you are satisfied with it.
The question I have is that I also have a PC with iTunes and a lot of music on it. I was wondering if it was possible to transfer my music library from PC to ibook via external hard drive. Will it read on Mac's OS.
Any advice or expertise would help. Thanks

Laptop PC or MAC? my 2cent....
We have many Laptop here Acer, Compact, Hp, others.. and Mac.
The Mac we got around 5-7 years ago are still working!
A writer just changed is first Mac laptop (first generation must be over 9 years old!!! The Hard drive can get noisy this tells you that you are due for a changed. Anyway in Oct. 2001 the biggest HD was 48G for a Laptop 2.5" - Today you find 100G for $160 (pageComputer.com. Rules of thumb, 4 years is the limit for a HD. Regardless MAC or PC. Before 2002 the MAC had IBM Hard Drive! Anyway, the look, the care for the CPU, the Add on, Programs, well just simply better for Mac in General. PC are find too but they are PC, Ok for iTunes and the Web usage and Microsoft application but even having your Mac is not like owning a PC. We still have a nice LOOKING Shell iBook Tangerine working for Web etc.. (second generation)we gave it to our kids.
My Laptop is 4 years old PowerBook G4 titanium, still love it today. What I do hate about it? the technology is growing so fast that the Laptop does not have what the new one has today inside it! Someone her got the Dell 17", nice machine got most of it! a good screen and a good price too. Well Apple will have the Intel... then I will get another then with Intel but still a Mac. therefore did you ever find yourself behind the wheels of a nice car? like RR, Bentley, etc... well you got the feeling... it is like buying your Mac! See how CompUSA store is presenting all PC comparing to the MAC line. Movies, Magazine ad, TV show always are showing Mac products without PAYING them for it!!!!!!!!
Ahhh! Software issues? well let me tell you that is it true that PC have 10's of thousand more Stuff (junk)and Free (with some virus). The real programs and the one you need and all utilities are there by the bumdle for you Mac. Do not forget the OS is Unix, you can control Linux (all are free - not the best looking apps), or start a PC without quitting your Mac (Virtual PC like) although not as fast but very impressive (for a show off).
    TIPS:
1- get all the RAM you can get (see Froogle.com, buy a MacAddict Mag or MacWorld - published by PCWorld look at the last pages,
2- get the biggest HD, get the DVD-R (good for Backup). For a Laptop I like to spend the most $$$ every 5 years. For a Station Tower the one just under the best model (technology is just going to fast, that the money spent on the top model is not well spent)
3- Yep! agree on the external HD. Dot Mac is cool for backup too! but do buy an external HD for real back up. or a nice Ipod as a back up? (bad idea, you loose it... you are dead)
4- I did look at prices the other day if you spend lot of money on either one.. the price will be the same! I spent 4 years ago $3650 for the top of the line Laptop. Today is the same price. For the cheapest the Mac start at $950 and PC you can find them just a bit less (Dinner pockect money for 4 years of pleasure?)

  • IBook logs off when I change the volume or try to restart

My iBook has been logging itself off every time I try to change the volume using F4 or F5 or when I try to restart from the Apple logo. I tried to run a virus scan and it came up with no viruses found. This problem started a week ago and may possibly have come from a virus from a Word document. Has anyone else had this problem? Or does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hi,
Try reinstalling the HP OSD Utility on the following link.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55152.exe
After this has completed, restart the notebook.
    Regards,
