  • Star schema in OBIEE 11G

    Hi Experts,
Please tell me the places in OBIEE 11G where i can design the start schema.is it only in Physical Layer or In BBM too?
    Thanks-Bhaskar

Final point, for performance reasons you should also try to model data into star schema in the physical layer.
If the data is modelled as a true star then there are database features which optimise query performance. These features are set by a DBA when the Warehouse is configured (e.g. enable_star_transformations). The results with this parameter on/off can be staggering (query time reduced from minutes to seconds), showing the power of star schema.
When snowflakes occur, these performance features will not work as designed, and performance will be degraded. There are certain criteria that have to be met by the data e.g. bitmap indices on all of the foreign key columns in the fact.
Please mark if helpful / correct,

  • OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.5) - RCU Schemas

    Hi,
I have got a Virtual Machine (BI_Dev) with OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.5) installed but RCU schemas are pointing to the Database Server (DB_Dev). Now I would like to clone the BI_Dev virtual machine to BI_Prod.
I can create RCU schemas executing RCU in the DB_Prod database. But my question is how do I change BI_Prod to point these new schemas? Do I have to change any configuration files OR any other script that can do it for me?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
Login Weblogic Console with admin username/pwd.
Goto Services -> JDBC -> Data Sources.
    Select Lock & Edit button
Select Data Source "bip_datasource" link in the available Data Sources list
    Select Connection Pool tab
    .... Change the URL|Driver|Properties|Password
    Select Save button.
    OR,
you have to go to WEblogic Enterprise Manager (http://<server>:7001/em/. Then go to Business Intelligence folder -> coreapplication. Go to "Deployment" tab and then to "Scheduler" tab. Change the database field to point to the new DB and apply changes.
    Hope it help's
    Thanks,

  • What's wrong in OBIEE 11g

Everyone is saying how good OBIEE 11g is so I decided to post about what's bad with it, which surprisingly it's lot. This is what I think is wrong with OBIEE 11g:
    1) Can't install the client tools only, it requires a full install. It seems they have simplified the installation in 11g but only for developers/sales reps running everything on the same machine on Windows PC. The Client tools even requires new set of schema, nonsense!
    2) The "super" new installer that allegedly does everything and simplifies your life does not create the time dimension tables for the Usage Tracking reports.
    3) BI Publisher still uses a separate Scheduler. Half-baked integration still there...
    4) OEM introduced functionality to configure things from the web but again half-baked integration there, a lot of config parameters still need done directly on config files. If you are going to change this better to change all at one go rather than confusing people with half-done things.
    5) Installer requires new schemas to be created in advance. Can't deffer that, can't use an existing schema. This is good for developers running everything on the same machine. Rubbish for enterprises where BI developers are usually not DBAs.
    6) Oracle installer now requires a myriad of permissions and packages on Unix to install (i.e. write permissions on /opt/app/oracle). 10g installer was much better and didn't need all that crap.
    7) 64 bits OSes only support "Software only" installs, need to be configured manually. WTF? The whole enterprise world is already on 64bits! Nonsense!
    8) Still no support for client tools in 64bits OSes.
    9) IE6 no longer supported. May be it was unavoidable but most of the enterprise is still in IE6.
    10) No choice of J2EE. I don't see the need to force people out of the their choice of J2EE other than pure anti-competitive behaviour.
    11) License costs up 130%.
IMHO the above is a big step back, Oracle is missing the point here. Obviously not enough competition on the BI market, Oracle's got too big and too greedy.

Here is an interview with Kurt Wolff, which is one of the original OBIEE developers from the nQuire days:
    http://obibb.wordpress.com/2010/08/23/obibb-%E2%80%93-interviews-kurt-wolff/
This is particularly relevant of how I feel about OBIEE 11g so far...
"I don’t really know if there are any new features that are important to me in my current work or not. There may be features that help Oracle sell more product, but that’s different.
Over two years ago I submitted a list of 20 “little” enhancements that, as someone who on a daily basis worked developing analytic apps with OBIEE, I thought would be really beneficial. They were “little” in the sense that I thought the dev team could knock them all out in less than three weeks’ time. Seriously big impact with seriously little work.
Instead, we’re getting what appears to be a major re-write of the product, which raises questions in my mind about compatibility, unlearning, and new bugs. What I know about new features – well, they’re not so compelling. Sure, if you have a need to integrate Essbase with your other data, that’s good. But in my present situation, it’s irrelevant, and I’m planning on taking a lot of time to evaluate the new release before moving ahead with it."

  • OBIEE 11g Installation Fails at configuration process

    Hi All,
I tried installing OBIEE 11.1.1.5.0 in my machine.Below are the prerequsite which I followed and the laptop system configuration details.
Pre-Requisites Followed : 1) Creation of Static IP address,2) Created Schema's using RCU In Oracle 11g Database.
Laptop Details : OS-Windows 7,Ram 3 GB and space for Installation nearly 14 GB.
    Installation Type: Simple Installation
Issue : There are 14 steps in the wizard.I have succeeded till step 12 which is called "Installation Process",But in Step 13 'Configuration progress' the wizard says Creating Domain status as 'In Progress' which stays in the same status even after 2 hours. So I am not able to complete installation Process as the wizard is not completing the Step 13 process which is 'BI Configuration'. This is the 4 attempt Iam trying the installation and the output is failure in the installation of OBIEE 11g on my machine.
Known Issue : Also when I executed the setup file for running the installation file in 'Drive:\bi_windows_x86_111150_32_disk1_1of2\bishiphome\Disk1\setup.exe',in the command prompt i got a warning message like swap space is 0.But I ignored that error and I gave 'y' to proceed further for the installation. As this swap space issue was common in many of our folk installation process which has ended in successful installation.
Help Needed : Can any one suggest me what will be the cause for the issue,or any Pre-requisite is missing,or the installation steps which I need to follow to make my installation successful.
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards
    Kris

    - all installation files must be in a folder without spaces.
Try to decompress all files in c:obi11g for exemple and restart installation.
    Or
    - You may have a temp directory in the path C:Documents and Settingsuser_nameLocal SettingsTemp. You got the above mentioned exception because of the temp directory path having spaces in it.
    Solution:
    1. Create a new directory called TEMP in a different location for ex: C:TEMP
    2. Now, Right click on My computer --> Properties --> Advanced --> click on Environment Variables.
    3. You should be having TEMP and TMP as variables under user variables section pointing to the C:Documents and Settingsuser_nameLocal SettingsTemp path.
    4. Edit the TEMP and TMP variables and mention C:TEMP in the variable value.
    5. Deinstall and re-install OBIEE 11g.

  • Integrating Mapviewer and OBIEE 11G

    Hi all,
I am unable to get a map to be displayed in an answers report.
I have imported Layers, Background Maps and images into Answers under the Administration - Manage Map Data
In there I am able to display a map from the menu options Edit Background map.
However when adding a map view to answers report I get the following error:
    View Display Error
A basemap is required to render a map. Please ensure that atleast one basemap is defined in the spatial meta-data

If anybody have a working integration, please let me know what I am missing.
    Regards,
    Hakan

on Presentation OBIEE 11g , you need to integrate MapViewer with OBIEE11g :
    * when you Build Themes (Layers) using Map Builder, don't forget to add Info Columns .
Example : in Region Table , Region_ID, Name , Description
once you do that, keep in note when you add this theme (layer) in Presentation (OBIEE11g) on Administration-->Map Management --> Manage Map Data ---> Layers .. Then Add your Theme (Layer).
    * Double Click your Layer (Theme) and click ( +) icon to add New BI Key , these BI Keys are same columns you added in Map Builder Info Columns (Region_ID, Name, Description) you should add them serialized exactly like how you did it in Map Builder info columns which mean don't add (Name,Region_ID,Description) ... that will may unable to view map properly.
this step above you keep adding it each Subject Areas one by one if need for map, once you finish doing this, this mean you integrate Mapviewer with OBIEE11g...
don't forget to add at lease one measure in your answer to view map properly , so that you can add PIE, BAR charts or Color Schemes...
    good luck

  • Essbase reports in OBIEE 11g

    Hi Experts,
The Essbase reports in OBIEE 11g is displaying the member names instead of the Alias names. However in OBIEE 10g the Alias names are rightly displayed.
Can anyone please suggest on how it is possible to display the alias names in OBIEE 11g?

    Hi,
thanks for ur reply. I checked the above workaround but found that the option Display Column -> Alias is not enabled. So am not able to select it. Hence now Member names is selected.
Please let me know if i am missing something else.

  • Error RCU-6083 during RCU installation prior to OBIEE 11g on Solaris

    Hello,
I have an application server where I have an Oracle Database EE 11g running on Solaris 10 upgrade 9.
The server has the following characteristics:
    - SUN V440
    - RAM 16GB
    - 2 processors Ultra Sparc III, 1.5GHz
    - OS: Solaris version 10
    - Disk space: 500GB
    - Oracle Weblogic Server 11g (10.3)
    - Ethernet 1 Gpbs
I want to install the RCU schemas and OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.5.0) on this server so I verified all the pre-requisites for RCU and OBIEE and are OK.
I am using the Repository Creation Utility (11.1.1.5.0) for Microsoft Windows (32-bit) to install the RCU because although the database is running on Solaris, the installer is not working through that server so I have a PC connected to the network and through that PC that has windows7 i could run the installer and connect to the db, using the SYSTEM user (because when i select sys as sysdba, although the password is correct, it doesn't connect to the db).
However, the installer is sending the ERROR: RCU-6083 regarding the pre-requisites for the BIPLATFORM.
I already use the following command alter system set processes=500 and restarted the db services, however the wizard installer is still sendig that error.
What can be done to succesfully install the RCU?
    Thanks and regards,
    Rebeca

    Hello User,
    Below my comments in blue:-
    1) Do I need to install any Oracle DB (like to install 10g) prior to running rcu.bat file?
    Yes
    2) If I install Oracle 10g DB, does if create any compatibility issue while installing OBIEE 11g?
    Check below the compatibility matrix

  • OBIEE 11g ODBC connectivity error

    Hi all,
I am getting the following error when I tried to access a simple query through Answers.
"*Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).*
    *Error Details*
    *Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC:OI2DL65P*

    What I did was
    1. Create a DSN 'orcl', 32 bit Oracle ODBC driver. Tested and worked against the Oracle database.
    2. Import metadata using Local, ODBC 3.5 and DSN = orcl
    3. Build a simple BMM and subject area
    4. In the phyiscal layer, right click on a table, and select view data/update row count. Error with message "The connection has failed"
    5. Hoping for the best, create a simple query in answer and got the above odbc driver error in results tab.
Interestingly, if I edit the connection pool and use OCI (my SID is also orcl), then everything works fine.
I'm new to OBIEE and hope someone can tell me if I have missed a step or make any mistakes!
    Thanks!

    Hi All,
I am able to connect SQL Server database with OBIEE 11g RPD offline and imported metadata and verified update row count/view data but when i was trying to publish the same RPD the data is not returning also "update row count/view data" is giving and error "The connection has failed."

Client tools are installed on local Vista 32 bit system.
Oracle database is working fin, where as SQL Server is giving issues.
You want me to create a ODBC connection in RHL 5 server to connect to SQL Server ? i am little bit confused here how to create !
same time i have created ODBC for oracle apps database and imported and able to view data in RPD when i am in Online mode.
When i open RPD in online mode and trying to import the data i dont have access to local machine ODBC's which is expected and if i change to "Remote Server" nothing is showing here.
Appreciate your comments on the above.

  • Error while configuring OBIEE 11G OPMN Service during Installtion

    Hello,
i tried installing 11G with simple install on Vista and didnot work, I think 11g does not work on Any Vista and not sure of W7
second, i tried installing the same on Windows XP and the installtion worked fine till the end and while configuring OPMN Services,
the OBIPS Services and OBICCS services failed, i retried to configure this services with "retry" option but never worked, so i skipped this part thinking that
i can configure this manually. finally i was not able
weblogic's Admin server, Managed server, Node manager and Analytics.war deployments are all healthy in EM Console and Weblogic console
the Fusion Middleware control in EM Console shows the BI Components are not started and i tried restarting it and but never started.
so i think there is something wrong with OPMN configuration at the end of installtion
is there a way to trouble shoot this.
i tried searching of SAWSERVER service so i can start the manaully, but it did not start
i did a softwareonly install on top this single instance installtion thinking if that can help me, but it didnt
    so please anyone help me
    Thanks
    Kumar

    Hi Kumar,
I believe OBICCS is the Oracle BI Cluster Controller Service. That particular service requires a static IP address. A lot of people use the loopback adaptor to accomplish.
Here's a quick rundown of some things you should check before installing OBIEE 11g.
    1. Make sure you have a static IP (use a loopback adaptor if you have to).
    2. Make sure your static IP adaptor is the first adaptor in your connections list. You can do this by going to Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network Connections -> Advanced. Use the up and down arrows to ensure that the static IP is the top of the list.
    3. Make sure you hosts file (c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) has the proper entry for the static IP address. For example, if your computer is called MyComputer and your static IP is 192.168.0.1, then the first entry should be: 192.168.0.1 MyComputer. Note: You may need to have your domain on your entry. ie. 192.168.0.1 MyComputer.mydomain.com.
I recommend you check those things. If you missed one of them, fix it and then back out the 11g install and re-install.
Good luck and if you found this helpful, please award points!
    -Joe

  • Issue with OBIEE 11g(11.1.3) Installation

I have installed OBIEE 11g last evening. I was able to connect to the dashboard and run a simple report also – all before shut down. Now when I try to access OBIEE 11g thru port :9704 after starting the BI services, I am getting the following error.

When I click Programs > OBI > Start BI Services it opens 3 wndows and says weblogic server is started and Im able to login to Weblogic server via “http://localhost:7001/console”.
When i start my machine the following services are started automatically:

I have even tried to reinstall and when the installation completes im able to login to “EM”, “weblogic” and “Analytics” also, but once i restart my machine im not able to login to “Analytics” as well as to “EM”.
    The process im following is:
When i start the BI Services from Start->Programs->Oracle Business Intelligence->Start BI Services, i get a popup window where it asks for weglogic user and password, then i have entered the user as “weblogic” and has give the password entered at the time of installation, then 2 popups opens and it runs several java files, then im able to login to weblogic but no luck with “em” or “analytics”.
If i try to login to weblogic and try to start the “bi.em”, “biadminservices” i get java error message.
Even i dont get Oracle Logo on the Admin tool also.
Can you pls let me know the repository password also as i have tried with “Admin123? but no luck.
Every time when i do the installation im able to access all the services for the first time but once i restart the machine then only weblogic will be working.
I have installed OBIEE 11.1.3 on Windows 7 Ultimate N(32 bit) OS with Oracle11g Database
Pls let me know if im missing anything here?
    Appreciate your help

This is a really basic question... but how much memory do you have, and how long have you waited for all the processes to load? On a Windows XP Virtual Machine with 3GB, I have waited 20 minutes before being able to access. And until then, you will see the error you have received.
    Just a thought...

What sort of installation you are trying to do..???
    Enterprise or Software only..?
From where you have downloaded the OBIEE 11g 11.1.1.6.0 dump..? edelivery or from other source..??
Your error is saying that patch +"p6599470_111070_Generic.zip"+ is missing.
Down load it from oracle and apply the patch. The details, How to apply the patch will be provided in that zip file only.
