OBIEE & Informatica vs OWB

Hello all
Im not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this but I havent had any luck googling this
Currently we are using OBIEE and OWB as our ETL tool
There have been a number of issues with OWB regarding the speed of the interface being clunky that I wont get into
Needless to say we are considering other ETL options, one of them being Informatica
I read some where that Informatica is offered through Oracle and may be part of the OBIEE package? (It was a blog so it could be totally inaccurate)
Would anyone know the cost difference between OWB, ODI and Informatica?
From what I can gather, Informatica doesnt seem to be that much more expensive then OWB
And ODI is the future
I will be installing a sample of ODI soon to give it a test drive
Thanks in advance

Your best resource for this information should be your Oracle Sales person for your particular area. Oracle does sell Informatica but it's a package deal generally.
Good luck.

    Thnks In advance.

    Hi,
the setup procedure depends on your Oracle BI Apps version.

    OBIEE 10g
    DATABASE 10g
    INFORMATICA 8.6.1
    DAC 10
    BI APPS 7.9.6.
Oracle Documentation for installation & configuration is too complicated...
Can anyone provide installation & configuration steps with snapshot.

You can download it and install it.
Below what I have done to install it:
    http://gerardnico.com/wiki/ebs/installation
You don't need the software then you can only install the database instance with the visio sample data.

  • OWB vs Informatica, Performance

    Hi
I am working on a Proof of Concept which is looking to replace Informatica with OWB. A key factor to the success of the proof of concept is performance.
At present, the OWB mappings seems to be considerably slower, which does not make much sense to me. I have compared the SQL generated from Informatica with the SQL generated from OWB, and they are pretty much the same. They key difference between the two solutions, is an initial processing of the data file. In the OWB solution, this is used as an external table and a number of mapping perform validation functions to prepare the data for further processing. In the Informatica solution, this validation is preformed a file system level, using data caching.
My experince of data caching is fairly limited. Is this a key way to reduce runtime of processing. Is this an advantage of Informatica over OWB, as this is performed outside the database.
Are there any other performance related areas which informatica beat OWB. Surely OWB should always win.
Any feedback would be gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance.

    LS,
I do not have any more hints for you than stated earlier, only more explicitly maybe. Forget the proof of concept.
Either you choose for the one (and only OWB) or for the other. Choise has already been made in the past and the develop/test costs spent.
    If you do not know:
    - how much money you can actually spent during production with OWB
    - how much time/skills/money you can spent during proof of concept of OWB
    - how much time/skills/money you can spent during rewriting and conversion of ETL-proces
your battle (proof of concept) is lost at forehand.
The solution of any detail like performance is a waist of time.
OWB and Oracle can function really fast, if
    - the right hardware is available
    - the right skills are available at ETL-design time.
Do not try to build an even more beautiful castle than the current with only a toothbrush during a proof of concept. Keep the comparison fair.
I would give this assignment back to where it came from.

    André

  • OWB Metadata export to OBIEE

    Background:
I have extended the OWB metadata by adding the Business Metadata (Technical and operational metadata is there out of the box). Business metadata is expected to be maintained by business users and consists of business terms and categories and has a number of attached attributes. I will like to leverage all the metadata in OWB repository to drive my OBIEE development and production.
Question: How can OBIEE ingest the OWB metadata, in particular the business metadata and make it available to developers and the OBIEE business users?

    Hi
The OWB 10.2 and 11.1 releases of OWB support OBI SE (Discoverer), the OWB 11gR2 (in beta) has support for OBI EE.
    Cheers
    David

  • Is the OBIEE used to create a data warehouses dynamically?

Management where I work wants to use the OBIEE Administrator to source a 3NF normalized database and create a "virtual data warehouse" in the Business Modeling Mapping layer of OBI Administrator as a Star Schema model is required by OBI Business Model layer. They claim they were told by an Oracle sales rep that the Administrator tool could do this.
Is this possible? As OBI issues only SQL and not PL/SQL how can one "create" dimensions, lookup tables and fact tables dynamically? And even if it could the performance hit to recreate the virtual data warehouse each time a query is issued would be huge.
Having used Prism Warehouse Builder and DataStage in the past to create data warehouses I am aware that one needs a procedural programming language to create and maintain the star schema tables (surrogate key maintenance, controling workflows, maintaining slowly changing dimensions, intermediate lookup tables, etc.). SQL was not meant to do this heavy lifting programming. Afterall, isn't this why Oracle Warehouse Builder and previously Informatica is shipped with OBIEE suite because OBI is not an ETL tool to create dimensional models? One uses an ETL tool to create the dimensional data model for OBI to access and pass along the metadata to OBI Answers.
So is it normal practice to use the Administrator's Business Mapping/Modeling layer for creating a virtual star schema logical tables from physical tables that are 3NF? Or is the tool used to access already denormalized tables in the physical layer that were created using Informatica or OWB or other ETL tool?

I asked an "Expert" in OBIEE. Here are snippets of his response:
"Be aware though that the transformation ability is fairly limited, and
will only really work with data that is very close to a star schema, i.e.
the data can be easily transformed through a couple of denormalizations and
table joins. If your source data is very normalized and cannot easily be
transformed into a star schema, you would need to use a tools such as
Informatica, OWB or similar to extract data from your source systems, load
and then transform it into a data warehouse or data mart and report of of
that. The more that your data needs to be transformed (i.e. the closer it
is to a 3NF model) the more likely it is that you'll need to use an ETL
tool, and a data warehouse or data mart, to host your data."
And in response to my noting the lack of documentation on how to model a 3NF to Star Schema his response was:
"No, you're right, the documentation doesn't really go into "how to" turn a 3NF model into a dimensional model. If you look back to when OBIEE was a Siebel product, the documentation was really aimed at either Siebel consultants or customers who had been on the training, they didn't want customers "off the street" to try and implement OBIEE as it would hit their services revenue. That's where the blog posts we do, things like the Oracle-by-example training courses on OTN and so on come in, otherwise as you say there's little out there on the best way to transform your model - it's mostly passed on "word of mouth" or is built up from experience on working on projects."

  • How to create odbc (dsn) connection for OBIEE AND INFOR in unix environment

    Hi,
we are establishing OBIA in Unix environment we set all the things fine but we are getting problem how to create ODBC connection
for INFORMATICA AND OBIEE. I searched some blogs thats telling there is a ODBC.INI file we need to configure.
but i am not getting clear idea to give parameters and it will not showing any TNSNAME ..........etc
please any body give clear idea about how to create ODBC connection and LOCATION of that file AND parameter which i need to give.
    Thanks,
    charan....

    Hi Dpka,
yah i already checked that one but i have not find out any parameter for TNS NAME information.
is OBIEE connected to ORACLE DATA BASE without giving TNS information?............in UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM.
pls give me the clear idea abt how to connect OBIEE, INFORMATICA to ORACLE DATA BASE IN UNIX ENVRNMENT
    thanks,

  • How to implement SQL Over-ride on Source Tables in OWB?

How can we acheive SQL-Override feature similar to the one available in informatica on OWB.
We are thinking of using a view to filter the required data. And defiinig the view as the source in the mapping.
Is this the best approach to go by,any thoughts suggestions?

Informatica is a pipelined client/server ETL tool which means that if you read from a table and then apply a filter it will read all of the data onto the client (i.e. the application server, not a user machine) and then filter the data so it is not unusual for developers to want to put a lot of the logic into the SQL to reduce the number of records (which sort of defies the purpose of using the tool in the first place).
OWB is more of a ELT/code generator so if you create a similar mapping with a table and filter it will generate the SQL with the filter included. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure about this bit but I believe if you have a source via dblink (or even ODBC) then that full generated SQL should be sent to the source. In other words, although some people might be more comfortable with custom SQL I dont think it is actually necessary in most if not all cases.

  • Regarding OBIEE Installation

    Hi All,
I need to install Oracle Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition, Informatica PowerCenter and Power Connect Adapters. In addition i want to install analytics for Supply Chain and Order Management Fusion Edition, Financial Fusion Edition, Procurement and Spend Fusion Edition.
The database we would like to use is 11g if compatible if no then 10g.
How can i configure these? Can you tell me the hierarchy of installation? means OBIEE, Informatica Power Center, DAC(i am not sure if require for this installation),how many repo db i want to use, Whether i need to install OBIEE and Power center in same machine or separate machine, what about OBI Apps(i didnt get the set up file for linux ony i got for windows), how can i integrate OBIEE with Oracle Apps 12.1.1....
I am new to OBIEE. Please let me know a solution for this.
    Thanks,
    Manikandan.

Please followup on the cross-post here: Regarding Installation of OBIEE

Hi, I am new to obiee/informatica/DAC. Can someone please give me ETL steps in informatica and DAC or please help me where to find any good documentation about that.
    Thanks,
    Radha

What do u mean by ETL steps?
    1. Do you want to use adapters?
    2.Leverage the OOTB Mappings?
    3.Build new Mappings?
    4. What do you want to do with DAC?
if u want some details you can mail me at cognos dot cube [at] gmail dot com

  • So Hard to get started

    Hello all,
I want to state somethings that I have found so confusing in getting started with Oracle Business Intelligence.
Whenever someone attempts to get in the Oracle BI world, there seems to be a myriad of products, tools and suites that one may not really know where to start.
Up till now, I have not been able to pick or find a resource on what is which. Sorry to compare products, I have been taken a look at Microsoft Database and its associated BI solutions, and indeed it was relatively much easier to say this does this. But for as long as a I have been in Oracle Database usage and putting my hand on work using its tools, I find it hard differentiating
Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition from
Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition One and also from
Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition Plus from
    Oracle Essbase
    or differentiating
    Hyperion Enterprise from
    Oracle BI Applications
and why I should not install tools like Oracle BI Publisher or Oracle Data Miner or Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) when I have any of the above installed.
Thank God for Oracle 11g. The confusion is a lot reduced, because with 11g, almost everything seem to be in the right place.
So, my request is that someone should please show me a reference that tell what is different from what with respect to the above mentioned BI products.
    Regards,
    Michael

It's all on the Oracle web site, I think you need to do a bit of homework research before asking a question like this...
    OBISE = Old Oracle Discoverer.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/standard-edition.html
OBISE One = Cut-down OBIEE version plus OWB.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/standard-edition-one.html
OBIEE = OBIEE+ plus Hyperion Essbase See:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/enterprise-edition.html
Oracle Essbase = Proper OLAP cubes
    http://www.oracle.com/appserver/business-intelligence/essbase.html
Oracle BI Applications = It's a bit pre-packaged BI Application (based on OBIEE) that's used to do BI on Oracle Apps
    http://www.oracle.com/appserver/business-intelligence/bi-applications.html
Oracle BI Publisher = Pixel Perfect reports
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/xml-publisher/index.html
Oracle Data Miner = Data mining, if you don't know what that is then you probably don't need it.
    OWB = ETL
All in all I would say you are getting confused and you are mixing too many products in the same bag. Sure you could say it's "confusing" to have so many products. But if you were to go to the supermarket without knowing what to buy, wouldn't that be confusing as well? Rather than looking at "what's available" you should look at what sort of product you need and based on that search which products meet your needs. Or would you go to the supermarket and ask to see and understand what every product does before buying what you need?

  • Changing Host IP on OBIA servers

    Hi,
We have the need to change the IP address on the servers that host our OBIA environments. For most environments, we can just do the following:
Stop all applications on the server.
Change the IP address at the O/S level. Restart server and/or network services.
In some situations, modify any application configurations where IP addresses are hard-coded. Most use hostname aliases and this step is often unnecessary.
Start all applications on the server.
Do you know if OBIA stores hard-coded IP address values in any of its configuration files or if there is anything tricky about changing the IP on an OBIA server?
Please let me know if you have successfully performed this change in a live environment or if your answer is more in theory.
    Thanks, Dean

I am wondering the requirements for all components involved in OBIA. If the host IP changes, are there any configuration changes that need to be made within these components.
We are using Oracle Business Intelligence Applications (Finanacial Analytics 7.9.5). We currently have a small installation and have all components loaded on a single linux server (oc4j, DAC, OBIEE, Informatica - as well as DB).
    Thanks in advance,
    Dean
