  • OBIEE and Solaris installation

    Hi,
This is my first time doing install of OBIEE 10.1.3.4.1 on Solaris10 and all working fine using default OC4J basic install. However when I want to use JBOSS AS 4.3 instead of OC4J, I am having some issues and hoping someone can shed some light here.
    1. OBIEE was installed using 'oracle' user.
    2. JBOSS was installed using 'jboss' user.
    3. Deployed analytics.war to JBOSS - no problem.
    4. Deployed xmlpserver.war to JBOSS by extracting war files into xmlpserver.war directory, modified xmlpserver-server-config.xml to point to XMLP repository.
    5. Login to BIP ok.
    6. Trying to modify OBI Presentation service settings (eg. server name and port) but getting "Could not write to configuration file" error.
Is this because OBIEE and JBOSS installation was done by two different users (therefore file access permission issue)? What is the best practice for installing OBIEE and J2EE app server in Solaris? Should it be installed by the same user or two different users but under the same group maybe? Any guidance will be greatly appreciated!
Edited by: gommie on 08-Sep-2009 18:19

Definitely sounds like a permissions issue.
I couldn't vouch for best practice, but our installations were originally done two separate users (one for OBIEE, one for our app server, OAS) - but I changed it all to run under the same user as OBIEE.
It makes controlling services easier, and it eliminates file permission problems like you're seeing.
You could probably do it with putting both users in the same group and some umask magic to make sure files always have the same permissions for group as owner - but why bother if you can use the same user.
We saw problems running under two users which probably could have been solved in the long run by understanding exactly how OBIEE and app server interact and working carefully with umasks etc -- but again, unless there's a really good reason to have separate users, why make extra work for yourself.
I suppose if you were on a shared server and not the only application running on jboss I could see why separate users might be a better idea - but that's the only reason that springs to mind.
** caveat ** I'm not a unix sysadmin, I'm an app guy dabbling in unix - this advice may be wrong, it may in fact go against best practice. but it's worked for us so far :)
BTW is there a reason you're not installing the latest version, 10.1.3.4.1?
    <edit>
please don't [cross-post|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=3744343#3744343], IMHO - this could be a useful thread and having replies in two places dilutes its usefulness in the future

    Hi Kam,
First of all it's a pleasure to help! That being said, if you think I've correctly answered all your questions, it'd be great if you'd reward "Correct" and/or "Helpful" points for my participation.
Secondly, after installing the components properly, you will get one development application, although, I'm not sure if it is IDE compliant. There really isn't a true debugger component, however, it does have a compiler that will throw errors and you'll have to do some leg work to figure out what is the root cause and fix it.
The only setup.exe file you should be concerned with is in the Server folder. Ignore the others.
    Good luck!

  • Authentication errors ..

    Dear colleagues,
I am trying to put things 100% working here with OBIEE, OBIP (Solaris)... almost getting everything working!
I have some issues here that probably you can help me...
    1) I am using BI SERVER authentication, with RPD security configuration. In Dash I can see the link to change pass and I can indeed change them perfectly. When I try to change administrator user it changes and works in Dash but not in Publisher? What am I missing here?
    oracle.apps.xdo.security.ValidateException
    2) Can the users change also the user password from RPD's, from Publisher? Inside account i can actually see+change that (it refers success!!!) but nothing happens. Please can u advice here?
    3) Sometimes when getting inside OBIPublisher we go directly into a guest folder.... and the Sign in is visible. If I try again (2nd time) it works perfectly. :S Strange behavior here.
    4) iBots still don't work. I get the authentication error that is referred somewhere inside this forum, but not solved !!!!!!!
    I would appreciate your help.
    Thank you.

    1) OK solved.

  • Error RCU-6083 during RCU installation prior to OBIEE 11g on Solaris

    Hello,
I have an application server where I have an Oracle Database EE 11g running on Solaris 10 upgrade 9.
The server has the following characteristics:
    - SUN V440
    - RAM 16GB
    - 2 processors Ultra Sparc III, 1.5GHz
    - OS: Solaris version 10
    - Disk space: 500GB
    - Oracle Weblogic Server 11g (10.3)
    - Ethernet 1 Gpbs
I want to install the RCU schemas and OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.5.0) on this server so I verified all the pre-requisites for RCU and OBIEE and are OK.
I am using the Repository Creation Utility (11.1.1.5.0) for Microsoft Windows (32-bit) to install the RCU because although the database is running on Solaris, the installer is not working through that server so I have a PC connected to the network and through that PC that has windows7 i could run the installer and connect to the db, using the SYSTEM user (because when i select sys as sysdba, although the password is correct, it doesn't connect to the db).
However, the installer is sending the ERROR: RCU-6083 regarding the pre-requisites for the BIPLATFORM.
I already use the following command alter system set processes=500 and restarted the db services, however the wizard installer is still sendig that error.
What can be done to succesfully install the RCU?
    Thanks and regards,
    Rebeca

    Hello User,
    Below my comments in blue:-
    1) Do I need to install any Oracle DB (like to install 10g) prior to running rcu.bat file?
    Yes
    2) If I install Oracle 10g DB, does if create any compatibility issue while installing OBIEE 11g?
    Check below the compatibility matrix

Well the OGL pipeline is not as mature the DX one, another problem is that opengl lacks some features that would be quite helpful for java2d such as Render-to-texture (with ogl you must use pbuffers).
Another problem is, that java2d uses the opengl-driver an a way, many drivers were not designe dfor this - they were designed for 3d-worlds not for fast 2d rendering.
Conclusion: You should better use the X11 pipeline; or the ogl pipeline with a modern ATI or NVIDIA card.
