OBIEE Vs MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP

Hi Gurus,
We need to present to customer a comparison between OBIEE 10.1.3.4 and SIMBA´S "MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP" to attack OLAP Cubes in 11gR2.
Of course OBIEE is more powerful and complete, but technically, we would like to know which OBIEE capabilities (apart from ibots, scheduling, hability of representing information) are not available or cant´t be utilized from SIMBA´s Sw.
Are there known limitations of MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP?
Is it truth that in the new OBIEE release the Microsoft Office add in is going to be more powerfull or is it going to remain the same?
Thanks in advance for your answers,
Best Regards,
Nch

  • Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle: Data type is not supported.

    I got the error:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle: Data type is not supported.
Shortly after upgrading from Oracle 8 to Oracle 9. I was advised to download more up to date oracle drivers, but I was wondering if there was a way to tell what version of the 'OLE DB Provider for Oracle' is already at. Is there a command I can use via SQL Plus or something?

I have found Microsoft ODBC for Oracle to be more stable than the Microsoft OLEDB for Oracle driver. I have also found both Microsoft ODBC and OLEDB drivers to be more stable than the drivers from Oracle.
You could always get the latest MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) from Microsoft's MSDN Download site and then get the ODAC (Oracle Data Access Components) from Oracle's OTN Download site. ODAC requires MDAC. And ODAC has the latest drivers.
I suppose it would help to have the latest patches for your Oracle client software too. Maybe Oracle MetaLink would have these?
It may even help to have the latest service pack for Visual Studio 6 (Visual C++ 6 and Visual Basic 6) too.

  • Are there any Oracle OLAP ODI Knowledge Modules for Oracle Olap 11g ?

Hi guys, wasnt sure where to post this so I put it here and the ODI forum
Does anybody know when Oracle OLAP Knowledge Modules, will be available for Oracle Olap 11g. It appears that the knowledge modules released with Oracle Data Integrator 10.1.3.5, currently only work with Oracle Olap 10g...
If there is no timeline, does anybody know of work around to get ODI reverses working on Analytical Workspaces built in Oracle Olap 11g

Raise a service request with Oracle Support (Metalink) for your system slow issue. May be, they will recommend you the workarounds for the issues which are not yet available for 11g in the form of Patches.

  • Oracle Data Provider for Oracle 10g

We have an application certified on the ODP 9.2.0.2102, Oracle Client and Oracle ODBC 9.2.0.6. We have a client who is moving to Oracle 10g client within the next few months but will still be hitting an Oracle 9.2 backend.
My question is: Is the 9.2.0.2102 ODP compatible with the 10g client, or do we need to certify against a newer version of the ODP? And if the latter, what version of ODP is recommended?
We plan to certify against the latest of both this year, but for now, we need the path of least resistence.
    Thanks for your help.

It is not "hard" to create your own geocoding schema though you will need to know how to create tables (with Oracle Spatial columns) in Oracle and before you do create the tables you should read through the documentation to be certain you have all of the required data and metadata.
Navteq, a data provider, also has sample geocoding data (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/spatial/htdocs/spatial_partners_data.html) as well as data for sale. Downloading and importing the Navteq data might give you a good idea about what you will need to do if you were to build your own geocoding schema using your data.
    I hope this helps.

  • Latest News on MDX and Oracle OLAP  (from Simba Technologies)

    [http://blogs.simba.com/simba_technologies_ceo_co/2009/05/mdx-query-language-for-oracle-11g-olap-update.html|http://blogs.simba.com/simba_technologies_ceo_co/2009/05/mdx-query-language-for-oracle-11g-olap-update.html]
Excerpt from above Simba Technologies CEO blog*
One interesting thing we found from some of the Beta customers is that they thought this was an Excel only solution. Yes, we are focusing all the efforts for v1 on Excel, but this is planned to be a full blown MDX provider for Oracle OLAP*. Therefore, you will get the entire MDX query language and this interface will be similar to what you have with Microsoft Analysis Services or SAP Business Warehouse. Although v1 will be ODBO only, we are planning to support XMLA in future versions. The priorities for what we support and when will be customer driven. One question I have is after Excel, which MDX application do you think we should test with and support next:
    1. SAP Business Objects Crystal Reports
    2. SAP Business Objects Voyager
    3. MicroStrategy 9
    4. Microsoft Reporting Services
    5. Microsoft SharePoint BI
    6. IBM Cognos Business Intelligence 8
    7. Panorama NovaView
    .

Thanks very much for your response. Pls find the details as requested. You can reach me in [email protected]
    Environment Details
    - BO XI 3.1 SP4 Enterprise Premium (incl Voyager) on Win2008 R2 [Tomcat Flavour]
    - Oracle 11.2.0.1 Enterprise Edition with OLAP on AIX 6.1
    - Simbha MDXProviderForOracleOLAP v2.1.0.23 on Win2008 R2
Cubes are built using AWM 11.2.0.2A.
To be more specific, the issue occurs when we attempt put a filter on the dimension (or select members of the dimension) both in the existing workspaces or when we try to create a new workspace in Voyager. Attaching the screenshot of the error message.
Kindly let us know incase you would require further information. Also, if you would like to have a webex session where I can show the issue, I am happy to do the same.

  • Oracle OLAP Universe

Not sure where to post this so apologize if this is not the right place for this post.
I am at a client's where there is a requirement to build a universe on top of an Oracle OLAP (10g) cube to use with WebI, Crystal, Xcelsius etc. that they want to begin using. Here are the issues I am facing and need some help with.
    1) They have a view built on top of their OLAP that I have been told is what is used for reporting. There are also 3 heirarchies that are maintained in Peoplesoft. The have developed a reporting interface using BO SDK API's and have their own custom SQL engine that they have built using Java. They use this SQL engine attached to a Crystal template to build their reports (The last part didn't make sense to me so quoting it verbatim as I have limited familiarity). When I try creating a universe using the view mentioned above in Designer, it throws an error with the mesasge E_METADATA_EMPTY_LEVELLIST. When I try using Universe builder to create the universe, as soon as I right click on the cube to select 'create universe', it hangs up infinitely. My question is if this is even possible and if so, what is the solution to my problem above.
    2) The second issue is that while the fact are in the OLAP, they maintain 2-3 heirarchies in PeopleSoft. From what I have gathered by talking to them, they use some DBLINK from the OLAP to connect to Peoplesoft and join the OLAP view with the Peoplesoft heirarchy when they dynamically build their queries to fetch the data for their reports. If I have to do this in the universe as well, how would I go about doing it or is it even possible?
Really need an answer fast. If what I'm trying to do is possible then I would need to some help with the 'how and if the answer is 'no' then I would need a proper explanation for that too.
    Appreciate the help !!

    Hi,
Rather than move all your data to another cube like SSAS as has been suggested, or go back to the relational source, why not just use Voyager to connect directly to the Oracle OLAP cube you have already built?
Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP allows Voyager to do this.
This would be much simpler than introducing a new tier of server (SSAS), and allows you to take advantage of the performance of the OLAP engine in the Oracle database.
    http://www.simba.com/oracle
in particular, look at the document that describes how to set this up:

  • Largest Oracle OLAP cube

    Forum members,
What is the largest Oracle OLAP cube that is out there in terms of total size, number of dimensions, and metrics? The company I recently joined uses Microsoft SSAS for building cubes pulling data from an Oracle DB. The size of the Microsoft SSAS cube is 18 TB (Tera Bites). I am encouraging these people to use Oracle OLAP, but there is push back saying Oracle OLAP won't scale to the extent Microsoft SSAS has.
I need some real data to defend my case. Has any one moved from Microsoft SSAS to Oracle OLAP?
    Thanks,
    Logan

    Logan,
In addition to the link that David provided, some more points are:
(1). With cube compression, it could be that the same 18 TB cube in MSAS is smaller in OLAP. Its hard to prove it without doing a test load.
(2). Microsoft does have a very feature-rich front-end to develop/build dimensions and cubes for MSAS, compared to Oracle OLAP's AWM.
Most of the work is handled in relational sql-views before loading dimensions and cubes in Oracle-OLAP. That is why there is relatively less functionality in AWM.
(3). Another thing I heard about in MSAS is "Scoped Assignments". I am not sure what it is, so I can't say how it can be done in Oracle-OLAP. If your customer currently use this MSAS feature, then you can post a question on this forum providing some details.
(4). MSAS does provide good Excel reporting. If your client will continue using Excel, then you should look at Simba's Oracle OLAP MDX plugin for Excel. Search this forum and you will find information about it, or goto http://www.simba.com/MDX-Provider-for-Oracle-OLAP.htm
(5). Writeback is another feature that can be done easily in MSAS. With Oracle-OLAP, you will have to come up with a custom (although simple) solution, where the data will be written into a table first and then loaded into Oracle-OLAP cubes. Its a very very quick process.
(6). There are more choices for reporting tools compared to MSAS. Since Oracle-OLAP cubes are queried through SQL SELECT statements, as long as a reporting tool can generate SELECT statements for an Oracle database, it can also work with Oracle-OLAP.
(7). Finally, it is much easier to federate (or combine) relational and multi-dimensional data together between Oracle-OLAP and Relational, as both are in the same database. So you may not have to store all the data into OLAP cube, what is currently loaded into MSAS cube.
Overall, its a slightly different way of doing things between OLAP and MSAS. But I am almost certain that with the power and scalability of Oracle database, Oracle-OLAP will perform better than MSAS. You just have to know how to convert those MSAS cubes/dimensions into OLAP cubes/dimensions.

  • Oracle OLAP - XMLA

    Hi,
We want to use FlexMonster(http://www.flexmonster.com/) to connect to Oracle OLAP cubes. I asked FlexMonster support and they said that if Oracle OLAP supports XMLA protocol then FlexMonster can be used.
I believe we need to buy Simba XMLA Provider for Oracle OLAP to this purpose; or does Oracle OLAP natively supports XMLA ?
Can you help us in answering this question ?
    Thanks,
    RK

Oracle OLAP does not support XMLA (or any other form of MDX). So you will need [url http://www.simba.com/MDX-Provider-for-Oracle-OLAP.htm]Simba for this.

  • Oracle Provider for OLE DB not available in list of providers

    Hi
I'm installing IdM 7.2 (Oracle) on a Windows 2003 R2 x64 server.  As this is a proof of concept system, all components are installed on this server.  The RDBMS is 10.2.0.4 x64.
I'm doing the IC Initial Configuration in the Creating the Identity center connection string, when I click on the Wizard the Oracle Provider doesn't appear in the list as expected.
I have installed the Windows Interfaces 64bit which contains the ODBC Driver and the Oracle provider of OLE DB.  I can see the ODBC drivers using the Microsoft ODBC Administrator.
Is there a step I am missing?
    Thanks in advance.

Strange. I just checked my demo box which is Windows 2008 R2 64bit with Identity Center and I can see Microsoft OLE DB provider for Oracle in tab Provider even I use MS SQL 2008 R2 for IdM. IC is jsut MMC (Microsoft Management Console) plugin so maybe you can try google for adding ODBC driver to MMC. The problem might be in 64 bits.
