OBIEE vs Oracle Discoverer

Hi,
Please can anybody let me know the differences between OBIEE and Discoverer. And which is better in what ways?
Please share the information.
Thanks,
Kishore

Ofcourse OBIEE is preferred over Oracle Discoverer. You need to look into usage, functionalities, budget and many more areas.

  • Migrating Oracle Discoverer Workbooks to OBIEE 11g

    Hello,
Can you tell me how can we migrate Oracle Discoverer workbooks in to OBIEE 11g , I have heard that there is a tool which is released in last summer for this migration can anyone provide me details on this one.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hello
I'm afraid Oracle has had no success in converting Discoverer workbooks into OBIEE. It is still on the radar but as yet they have nothing.
For some of my clients this is a huge setback. I have a client who has more than 32,000 Discoverer workbooks and adding more at the rate of about 5,000 a year. Obviously a customer of this size is a potential customer for OBIEE. The only thing they can do right now is to rewrite all of the reports.
To do this would be a mammoth task and I did some mathematics for them. Let's say you can rewrite one report every 15 minutes, allowing for testing and parallel runs. Thus you could convert 4 in an hour or 32 in a full day. Diviiding 32 into 32,000 means they would need to allocate 1,000 man days to the task. Bearing in mind that on average a person works about 220 days in a year and you are looking at around 5 man years, not including potentially 1000s of new Discoverer workbooks that have been created in that time. Needless to say my client is not happy with Oracle and refuse to go down this path sticking with Discoverer.
I know for a fact this company is not alone and I personally implore Oracle to allocate resources to correctly converting Discoverer workbooks. I know part of the problem is that there are things that Discoverer takes in its stride which OBIEE either cannot do or has great difficulty with. Until OBIEE can do everything Discoverer can do I don't see how customers can convert.
    Thoughts anyone?

  • Customizing Oracle Discoverer Plus

    Hi,
Our team is trying to figure out the best way to integrate our custom built Web app with the Oracle Discoverer Plus applet. The only thing that seems to be customisable in Discoverer is the banner image. I’ve read that Discoverer Viewer can be customized a bit more by hacking the IUX files. Unfortunately, our application must work with the applet (Discoverer Plus).
We looked into using the v$sql view to track down the query that Discoverer is using. This approach would be risky since there’s no guarantee that Discoverer's query will still be the shared pool when our application is called.
Since we’ve been unable to integrate our application with Discoverer (i.e., add a new button to the Discoverer applet), we’re using the Discoverer html and xml export. By parsing these two files, we can mirror data as well as the query used to generate the data in our application.
I was wondering if we had overlooked anything (e.g., undocumented api).
    Thanks for your help
    Danny

Are the users truly creating new workbooks each time, or are they just doing different selection values? I use the Parameters feature of Discoverer to let users do their data selection, which handles much of their ad hoc analysis needs. But if the users are truly coming up with new workbooks every time, then yep, they are going to want to use Discoverer Plus. Maybe you need to look at moving beyond Discoverer to OBIEE, or some other data warehouse/business intelligence solution, as a better long term solution for your users? Just something to think about.

  • Oracle Discoverer / Portal

    Hi,
I should know the answer to this question but during my recent adventures I have become confused by various product offerings.
We currently use Oracle Reports and Oracle Discoverer for various reporting requirements. We are missing a publishing option and naturally we think Portal could fit the bill. However, SSO is a bit of a nightmare so we would like to bypass this and just use basic user authentication i.e. user enters username & password.
Can Portal be used in this way? If so, how? Can anyone point me in the direction of a white paper or configuration guide?
    Many thanks,
    Rhys David

    Hi Rhys David
Don't be wary of Portal and its interaction with Discoverer. Until the acquisition by Oracle of Siebel and the introduction of what is now called OBIEE, the Discoverer / Potral combination was Oracle's flagship reporting mechanism. It works very well and you can produce excellent dashboards. If you have no budget or need for linking with BI Publisher then this is the way to go. If you have a full 10g Application Server complete with metadata repository (affectionately known as the Infrastructure) then Portal is already included at no further charge. If you only have a stand-alone Discoverer then you will need to upgrade to the full application server, install the metadata repository and link Discoverer to it. The latter will mean an additional fee to get the appropriate license.
By the way, Oracle Portal development is not typically for the faint hearted and I would recommend you have someone get really familiar it, maybe even taking one of Oracle's courses.
While my company offers what some consider to be among the best Discoverer training we don't offer Portal training. The Oracle Education classes for Portal are really excellent and worth the money. I know because I have attended them.

  • Oracle Discoverer Desktop Report output showing unicode characters

    Hi,
Oracle Discoverer Desktop 4i version Report output showing the below unicode characters.
    kara¿ah L¿MAK HOLD¿NG A.¿
We ran the same query in sql at that time the data showing correctly.
Please let me know, is there any language settings/ NLS settings are need to set
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi
Let me give you some background. In the Windows registy, every Oracle Home has a setting called NLS_LANG. This is the variable that controls, among other things, the numeric characters and the language used. The variable is made up of 3 parts. These are:
    language_territory.characterset
Notice how there is an underscore character between the first two variables and a period between the last two. This is very important and must not be changed.
So, for example, most American settings look like this: AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252
The second variable, the territory, controls the default date, monetary, and numeric formats and must correspond to the name of a country. So if I wanted to use the Greek settings for numeric formatting, editing the NLS_LANG for Discoverer Desktop to this setting will do the trick:
    AMERICAN_GREECE.WE8MSWIN1252
Can you please check your settings? Here's a workflow:
    a) Open up your registry by running Regedit
    b) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE
    c) Look for the Oracle Home corresponding to where Discoverer Desktop is installed. It's probably called KEY_BIToolsHome_1
    d) Clicking on the Oracle Home will display all of the variables
    e) Take a look at the variable called NLS_LANG - if it is correct Exit the registry
    f) If its not correct please right-click on it and from the pop-up select Modify
    f) Change the variable to the right setting
    g) Click the OK button to save your change
    h) Exit the registry
    Best wishes

  • Oracle Discoverer - Export report as PDF

Using Oracle Discoverer Desktop 10.1.2.1 with Adobe 7 installed. We do not see an option to export as a PDF file. It was my understanding this should be an option. Is there a way to add PDF as an export option?

    Hi,
You cannot export to PDF from Discoverer Desktop, however, you can use Discoverer to print to the Adobe PDF Converter print device which will generate the Discoverer report in PDF format.

  • Creating a new workbook in Oracle Discoverer

I am not very familiar with Oracle Discoverer but have had to be involved in it recently. What i am trying to do is create a new business area. I logged on to the Oracle Discoverer administrator and followed these steps
    - Create a new business area from online dictionary
    - Selected the schema user
    - Selected the tables/views i wanted to include in the business area
    - Click finish
Now i have included the tables in the business area. When the user logs on to Oracle Discoverer he can see the 3 tables/views i selected. If they try to create a new workbook they can only include one of the tables in the workbook but not all 3 at the same time. If i include one table, the other two tables become 'disabled' and cannot be included in the workbook.
Any ideas why this is happening?

    Hi ziggy
It sounds like you did not create any joins between the 3 folders. Those have to be in place in order for a user to be able to create reports from more than one folder.
If you are new to Discoverer administration I would suggest you get some training. Oracle offer great training at numerous locations around the country and there are numerous self-help locations that you can find if you plus Discoverer Training into any Google search box.
My company also has e-learning for Discoverer and you can find out more by visiting this website: http://ascbi.com

  • Creation of a Custom Folder in Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition

    Hi
Could anybody help me in solving this problem while creating a Custom Folder in Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition ?
    My Requirement is :
I Connect to EUL_US/EUL_US@<HOST_STRING> under Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition.
I selected a Pre-Defined Business Area Eg. General Ledger
There i created a Custom Folder by Name Test Custom Folder
The Query which i used in my Custom Folder is
    SELECT NAME FROM GL.GL_JE_BATCHES
When i Used this Query it says Table or view does not exist.
The Folder is getting created but without a Query.
I am not able to preceed further.
    Any Help would be appreciated
    Regards
    Nakul Venkataraman

Hi Nakul, you may be running into a problem with the sql for your custom folder. For some reason Discoverer Admin will allow you to create a custom folder with sql, but then if you change it and it has any advanced sql, i.e. grouping sets, analytic functions etc., you probably receive an error.
An option is to create a view using the same sql and create a folder from the database using this view.
    Hope this helps.
    Brent.

Did you mean to say 11.1.1.2 and not 11.1.2?
11.1.2 works fine on Windows 7 (64 bit).
11.1.1.2 does not support windows 7 (64 bit). 11.1.1.3.01 was released a fews weeks back that supports windows 7 (64 bit).Hi Toufic,
    Yup, i mean hyperion 11.1.2..
Now, the smartview has been successfully installed in my system. First, i tried to uninstall the my smartview and delete all registry that point to my smartview. and then i tried to re-install the smartview version 11.1.2, and now, it's work.
    Thanks Toufic..

  • Differences between  Oracle Discoverer 10g and 11g (EBS & Desktop)

We are in the process of upgrading from Oracle Discoverer 10g testing to Oracle Discoverer 11g.
We have had several requests (from functional users) for documentation that might reflect the changes in this release level. Does anyone have relevant documentation that might help explain what has changed so that they can be better prepared.

We are in the process of going from 10 desktop to 11 plus. I do not like it as other end-users I have talked to don't either. In desktop, I could have multiple reports open at one time, move tabs from one report to another so I wouldn't have to rebuild the report again. Also, there are times I have 3 or more sessions of desktop running with multiple reports running in them. In plus, I am limited to one session and one report. That slows down productivity big time. In desktop, exporting crosstabs to excel is more user friendly than plus. For desktop, it will fill in the cells below with the data above it if it changes. In plus, it looks like a pivot table. I have read other posts on how to work around that, but not always functional. Using Dense_Rank() works sometimes depending on how the report is written. IT is researching another way but haven't heard back from the consultants. Or, I will have to modify all my excel files with formulas to do that for me. Also in desktop, I can select all and copy paste the results into excel and all data comes in. The row and column headers, page items and even the title section will paste into excel. Plus only gives you the data, no row or column headers. So I have to export it every time I need the data. I have formatted excel files that all I need to do is copy paste and data flows beautifully. As for organizing and saving reports, desktop is much better. I can save reports out on our network under different folders so I can find them faster by topic. Granted, if that directory is an open one, anyone can change/delete it. In plus, the only advantage of saving it on the database is I can sort and search for reports or users. If you make any changes in plus and then walk away from your desk, plus will shut down after a certain time period. If you didn't save it, you have to start over. Don't know if this is something IT can fix???
As we see it, plus is a step back in technology. I hope someone can change that opinion. Don't know if we are not getting the best support from whoever is working with us (Oracle or 3rd party) or we are missing something???? If so, please share.
    Thanks.

  • Connect to Oracle Discoverer window does not appear

    Hi,
The Web based Oracle Discoverer 4i does not work properly on my system. I first connect my Microsoft IE to the URL. One the URL there is magnifier icon. Under this icon there is a lable of "Click the image above to start".
I click this icon and another window pup up. The top left corner of this window shows "Oracle Discoverer" title. Under this title bar are the menu items. The menu items are File,Edit,Sheet, tools, Graph & Help from left to right. The bottom left corner shows "Loading...". But the "Connect to Oracle Discoverer" window never pups up.
If I connect my browser to another URL I can get "Connect to Oracle Discoverer " window displayed and log into database.
What is wrong with my first server?
    Thanks for help.
    Wallace

I'm only guessing, but I've had similar problems in a few cases with the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. Try getting Discoverer to run with a different JVM, like Oracle Jinitiator.

    Hi Lance,
Thanks for the documents. Its really helpful to me.
I am able to change the look and feel of my reports. But I am unable to change the corporate logo.
    The steps that I followed.
    1.Goto discoverer Plus configruation.
2.Goto Logo change the option button from None to File and Choosed the .jpg file from C:\Logos.
    3.Restarted the application server.
4.Open the BI plus reports in IE. But still I am seeing the same Oracle Logo only.
5.But whatever the look and feel like plastic/system/oracle I changed I am able to see the changes.
6.The logo change is not as simple as I thought??. I need to create Jar on this logo and I need to put the jar file in java /j2ee directory???.

  • Correlation in Oracle Discoverer

    Hi,
I know how to calculate correlation in Oracle discoverer plus using calculations but is there a way for us to give the users the ability to drag drop the variable they want to see the correlation between in viewer. So for example if the user wanted to see the correlation between SAT scores and age they could just select the variables somehow and see the correlation between them.
    Thanks

There is no straight forward way but one possible solution:
    1.
Create a folder in the eul that contains two columns
    1) a dummy column
    2) a LOV column
    I usually do this with a query SELECT 'dummy' as joiner, 'LOV ITEM' as lov_item from dual union....;
    2.
create a LOV on the LOV Item column
    3.
create a join between the new table and another table in the workbook
    4.
create 2 parameters based on the lov item column (do not create a condition with the parameter)
    5. create a calculation that calculation that well correlate two items based on the values of the parameters
    6. remove the new table from the workbook. The new table will not affect how many rows are returned but the parameters still look at the LOV table.
