Object mask/layer mask

hi...
i am new to using masks in motion. when i create a mask for a single object, nothing happens.....only if i apply the mask to the whole layer does it then take effect. is there a piece of information i'm missing about masking individual objects within a layer? thanks for any suggestions.
i mac g5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   motion 1, final cut pro 4.5

how are you creating a mask?
With the object selected, are you drawing a mask with the masking tools (not the Shape tools) in the toolbar, or are you using the Add Image Mask, which requires another object to be plugged into it before you'll see anything happen?
FYI,
Motion's User Manual has quite a lot of information on masking.
Pg 851 on deals with Masking tools and how to use them
Pg 865 on deals with Image Masks and how to use them

ther must be a way to link smart objects with it's layer mask without having to rasterize....isn't there?

  • Smart object with a layer mask.

I'm using CS4 and I have run into a problem. When ever I create a smart object, photoshop applies a layer mask where is never did before. I can't figure out how to revert photoshop drawing the smart object without the layer mask.
It's driving me insane. I can't do anything and when I remove the layer mask, the smart object fills the whole canvas. Not happy!

I am having an issue in PS CS6 (on a Mac) where in the middle of working on a file, it gets corrupted by filling in a grid of squares in my layer masks as well as deleting out those same sections of misc layers throughout the file. I have reset the preferences, cleaned up the file. Renamed it to another file and 2 weeks later it is doing the same thing. Luckily I had my main subjects as smart objects and it saved them. This second time I just closed it out and opened it again and it is fine. Anybody else have an issue with this? Also it runs really slow these days on my MacBook Pro Retina 2.6 Core i7 with 16gb Ram.

  • Why doesn't Photoshop always generate a layer mask

I believe it was in CS4 that Adobe expanded the use of automatic layer masks ... perhaps it was with adjustment layers (I'm not quite sure)
I don't know about others, but it would save me considerable time in the long run if every new layer, (whether it is generated as a copy, from a plug-in, as a cut, or as a new blank layer) recevied an automatic layer mask. It takes no file space, but more often than not I find myself needing one. It sure would be nice to jump right into masking rather than having to first create the layer mask. Why did they stop at adjustment layers?
    Am I alone in this?
    thanks

Adding layers like Text, Raster and smart objects never have had automatic layers mask added.  Adding adjustment layers always came with an automatic layer mask until CS4.  Adode introduced bugs in CS4 when they added the adjustment panel these bugs have been carried forward into CS5 and CS6. Adobe added two options in the adjustment panels fly-out panel.  These options are designed to be global, not just adjustment panel options.  These options only work sometimes when changed from their default settings.  When changed from their default settings they try to change Photoshop historic default operation.  When you change Photoshop default operation Action, Scripts and Plug-ins that add adjustment layers may not work correctly.  Adobe should fix Photoshop and remove the two bad Adjustment Panel fly-out options. The Adjustment Panel fly-out menu option to not add Layer masks can not be safely set, same goes for the option to always clip added layer mask, if you use Actions, Scripts and Plug-ins that add adjustment layers.

  • Can a masking layer have more than one mask?

I have a mask layer with a rectangular mask in it.
Inder this layer I and a nasked layer with an object to be

    This works fine
When I all another object to be masked in thesame layer and

Does this mean that the masking layer can only have one mask?

One mask per layer, tho the mask could be made of movie clip
    which could
    have a mask within.

  • Loading a layer mask as Selection in Script

If you have a layer (Layer 1), that has a mask on it, if you look at the Channel list in Photoshop, you will see a channel named "Layer 1 Mask" of which you can load the selection using the "Load Selection..." dialog.
If a layer has a mask, even if the layer is the active layer, the mask is not a channel object in script. At least, it not exposed.
activeDocument.channels.length returns the number of component channels plus any alpha channels. In an RGB image with only the layer mask it returns 3.
activeDocument.channels.getByName("Layer 1 Mask") throws an error.
So I don't see a way to tell if a layer already has a mask or how to load that mask as a selection, apply or discrad the mask, or turn the mask off without using scriptlistner.
I personally am using C#, and I tried the following which worked:
    curDoc.Selection.Load(curDoc.Channels["Blue] ,null, null);
    But this doesn't:
    curDoc.Selection.Load(curDoc.Channels["Layer 1 Mask"] ,null, null);
    Any help would be appreciated
    Carl

As far as I know scriptlistner is the only way to deal with a layer's channel masks. A vector mask is part of the pathItems collection when the layer is active.

  • Layer Mask's

Here is my question, If I have an object I want to add a layer mask to and then want to add another layer mask to the same object, can I do that and if so what should the layer setting be for the layer mask on top of the first layer mask? I am just beginning to use masks so I hope that question makes sense. Thanks

Ed, I am just experimenting with different effects with masks. I am trying to create an animation with movement in multiple areas and I fugured masks would be a good start to try with.

  • Cannot Apply Layer Mask in Photoshop CS6

First off, let me state that I am a *total* Ps newbie…My question regards the following: In Ps CS6, I cropped an area using the Marquee Tool. Then, I Added [a] Layer Mask from the Layers Panel. Next, I turned off the Indicates layer mask is linked to layer BUTTON, clicked the Smart Object Thumbnail, and moved the image using the Move Tool. Now, I right-clicked on the Layer Mask Thumbnail in order to Apply Layer Mask but it is de-highlighted. This is my problem. I cannot figure out how to Apply [the] Layer Mask. (I hope this all made sense.) Can someone please tell me how to do this in CS6? TY.

Thank you for the quick reply. I started the whole process over again and went through the same steps; and, I don't know if it shows up in the screen capture, but there is, indeed, a frame around the Layer Mask Icon when I right-click on it. The above pull-down menu is what I get when I right-click on it. (BTW, this is for a CS5 online course I'm taking, and this particular Lesson is called "Generating a Non-Destructive Crop." I'm having to figure some stuff out, since I have CS6...) I hope all that info helps.

  • Why is Apply Layer Mask greyed out?

    Hi,
Once in a while 'Apply Layer Mask' is not available.
    What I checked myself:
-Photoshop is not in Mask mode (shotcut Q).
-I reset all Warning Dialogs (since this is a way to get a Mask applied by dragging it to the trash).
Can not get it to work!
    Any other solutions? Thanks!

I found out myself - the layer was a Smart Object. Maybe I should suggest Adobe to let Photoshop ask for rasterization when Applying, in stead of just greyin' out.

  • Original picture turns black and white when adding layer masks.

Creating a collage. Just placed a new object with a layer mask. Now I need to create a hue/saturation, levels adjustment layer and color balance adjustment layer all with masks. Ok, no problem, but when I do this, my original picture turns black and white. HELP!!! School project and has to be completed by Monday morning.
    Thanks. Dawn

You haven't added a Hue/Saturation layer that's got Saturation turned all the way down, by chance?
It might be helpful if you'd capture a screen grab and post it here, showing your layers and channels panels.  With a look at how things are organized knowledgeable folks here should be able to help or at least ask more direct questions.

  • Layer mask in Illustrator

In Photoshop this is quite easy:
In the bottom layer I draw the left square. On the next layer I draw the areas indicated by the green bits in the center image. That second layer becomes a 'layer mask'. So the result is the right image are the rectangle is  masked in such a way that the green areas mask the segments of the rectangle.
Now in Illustrator... I can't draw the green areas in a top layer, choose 'compound path' and next 'clipping path'. As this makes the segments of the rectangle beneath the green areas visible. So the opposite of what I want: make the areas below the green shapes invisible.
Also I can't add to the mask.  So I can't add more green shapes to mask the rectangle with. Unlike in Photoshop where I just can use my brush to add to the areas in the layer mask so more is being masked.
Is there any way to make it possible what I want? Or am I forced to do the exact opposite: draw over the areas I want to have visible and use that as a clipping path so everything beneath that becomes visible and the rest is 'masked'?

    jiggy,
    You have two ways:
    A) Clipping Mask:
    1) Create a path at least covering the rounded square,
    2) Select the green bits and the path from 1) and Object>Compound Path Make,
    3) Select 2) and the rounded square and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.
    B) Opacity Mask:
    1) Change the green bits black and Group them or turn them into a Compound Path (either works),
    2) Select 1) and the rounded square and in the Transparency palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with Clip and Invert Mask unticked.

  • Fading A Drop Shadow - Missing 'Layer Mask Hides Effects' in CS5

I'm using CS5.  I want to create a fading drop shadow on a shape/box. See the attached image below.
In Photoshop, this is easy by doing:
    1) Create shape
    2) Add layer mask to shape layer
    3) Click gradient, set gradient to Multiply, and set gradient colors to white to black
    4) Drag gradient where you want it on the shape.  The drop shadow will actually bleed through the middle of the shape, and not just on the edges, which is unwanted.
    5) Open up layer styles, under Blending Options, select Layer Mask Hides Effects and it will get rid of the drop shadow showing up in the middle of the shape and you will be left with perfect, faded drop shadow on the edges (see below for finished product).
Firework is missing step 5.  There is no Blending Options and there is no Layer Mask Hides Effects.   Or if there is, I have no found them. I am using CS5.  Any ideas how to accomplish this in Fireworks?

Clone the shape. Change the color of the clone to gray and, in the properties panel, change its edge type to feather.  With the clone still selected, choose Commands > Creative > Auto Vector Mask. Select the bottom, left mask type by clicking on its image, and then apply it. In the layers panel, click on the new mask group to select it. Click on the black masking object on the right of the two linked objects to activate the gradient adjustment handle. Shorten and rotate the gradient until you get the effect you want.

  • How can layer masks be saved seperately to be re-used on other photos?

I was looking at an an album design program that uses Photoshop as its base, and noticed that it pops up a selection of masks in a window below the photo ...something like mini-bridge, and there you can select different styles and masks etc to apply to the image being edited.
I thought that is pretty neat because some of the masks could be quite universal, so I tried creating one and saving it seperately but got nowhere.
I then created one, took a screenshot of it and saved it as a jpg, then opened that, selected all, and tried to paste it into a mask ...and again no go.
So ...how do they do that?
    jj

You can copy layer from one document to an other and the layer can contain a layer mask.  You can also save a layer mask as an alpha channel and you can copy a channel from one document to another and use the channel as a layer mask. You need to be careful copying between documents. It woks best when both documents have the same resolutions.
Albums are usually done in Photoshop with the use of PSD templates design for pages in an album with different page layouts however all pages are the same size and resolution.  Image are populated into the templates.  Layer mask and layer styles are often use in the templates.  Photoshop automation may also be used to aid the process.
Photo Collage Toolkit UPDATED Made Rotate for Best Fit an option in PasteImageRoll.jsx Edit to customize your default settings.
Photoshop scripting is powerful and I believe this package demonstrates this.
The package includes four simple rules to follow when making Photo Collage Template PSD files so they will be compatible with my Photoshop scripts.
Size the photo collage templates for the print size you want - width, height and print DPI resolution.
Photo collage templates must have a Photoshop background layer. The contents of this layer can be anything.
Photo collage templates must have alpha channels named "Image 1", "Image 2", ... "Image n".
Photo collage templates layers above the background layers must provide transparent areas to let the images that will be placed below them show through.
There are twelve scripts in this package they provide the following functions:
TestCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to test a Photo Collage Template while you are making it with Photoshop.
CollageTemplateBuilder.jsx - Can build Templates compatible with this toolkit's scripts.
LayerToAlphaChan.jsx - Used to convert a Prototype Image Layer stack into a template document.
InteractivePopulateCollage.jsx - Used to interactively populate Any Photo Collage template. Offers most user control inserting pictures and text.
ReplaceCollageImage.jsx - use to replace a populated collage image Smart Object layer with an other image correctly resized and positioned.
ChangeTextSize.jsx - This script can be used to change Image stamps text size when the size used by the populating did not work well.
PopulateCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to Automatically populate a Photo Collage template and leave the populated copy open in Photoshop.
BatchOneImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Collage templates that only have one image inserted. The Collage or Image may be stamped with text.
BatchMultiImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with images in a source image folder. Easier to use than the interactive script. Saved collages can be tweaked.
BatchPicturePackage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with an image in a source image folder
PasteImageRoll.jsx - Paste Images into a document to be print on roll paper.
PCTpreferences.jsx - Edit This File to Customize Collage Populating scripts default setting and add your own Layer styles.

  • Photoshop creating boxes on layer mask after sharpening

I don't even know how to explain this but I hope the screen shot I've included explains it better. I have a problem with Photoshop automatically creating strange boxes on the layer mask when I'm sharpening the image, first with high pass, then unsharp mask. After I've already created a stamp visible layer on top of the layer mask. I don't understand! Can anyone help me with this?

It seems that you are saying that you applied Unsharp Mask to the top layer and it resulted in black blocks suddenly appearing in the mask of an untargeted lower layer.
Looks like image tile corruption of the mask. There's a lengthy thread where some Mac users have reported apparently similar corruption arising from using Gaussian Blur and Unsharp Mask filters. That seemed to involve Smart Objects, though, and your example has no SO.
Link: Gaussian Blur in Photoshop CS5 Corrupting files
    Here are a few comments:
"using gaussian blur, and then photoshop starts drawing blocks on my files. Sometimes it's on the actual layers themselves, and sometimes just in my layer masks."
"It's not just gaussian blurring that does it for me though (though it does); for me, it's way worse layers with masks, or groups of layers with masks that really get things tweaked out."
"Didn't even get to apply the Gaussian Blur. Saw the corruption happening while I was in the effect preview, hit cancel but it still messed up my image. Interestingly, it only effected the layer beneath the one I was attempting to apply the blur to."
