Object states in interactive PDF?

Is it possible or will it be a feature soon?  I know I can essentially accomplish the same thing hiding buttons, but I have some very complicated object states in my interactive swf files and would like to publish them to PDF so they can be viewed on an iPad.  Will this feature ever happen?

Don't hold your breath. PDF is now an ISO standard which means that it won't change quickly. There is no concept in PDF to support object states.
Also you should know that the PDF readers on the iPad don't support much if any interactivity.
You best best is creating a publication with the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.  That would be more difficult to learn than PDF and more expensive. To learn more about it, see this link:

This technology supports slides shows like you can create with the Object Styles panel.

  • Interactive pdf - Buttons within multi-state objects

    Hi,
I seem to have a problem. I dont know if it is even possible, but I made a button that goes to a status of 2 multi-state objects. Within one of those multi-state objects is a button that closes that multi-state object. So now I am wondering if it is possible to make that same button close the other multi-state object aswell?
    Marc

Yes, you can attach multiple actions to one button, but there´s a bigger problem... based on your title I guess you are trying to use multistate objects with interactive PDF and that´s not possible. MSOs are supported only with SWF exports and with Adobe DPS / Folios....

  • Object state not working if exported in PDF

I'm working with Digital Publishing Suite and I have deeply appreciated the function "Object state". When used in connection with buttons and, eventually, the "Overlay Creator" it enables superb effects.
I wonder about the fact that this helpful function does'nt work if the document is exported in PDF.
Just in fact, at the moment, this feature works only with DPS, but I know that it is present since CS4, in times when DPS did'nt exist.
    Can you explain this?
And when will be available in PDF exported documents?
    Thanks
    Lorenzo

    Hi Rahul,
I have created the hyperlinks in the interactive (html) mode.
While creating the hyperlink you just need to check one option "Use Complete URL path". This option will enable the hyperlink
    in the pdf mode too.
FYI.. I am on BO XI 3.1

  • Interactive PDF: Rollover button state no longer working properly  ???

Okay, what's going on with the Interactive PDFs lately?
Now all my rollover buttons no longer work properly.  If I have a button that's simply a black arrow, and in the rollover state it's red.
No matter if I'm checking it out in the latest Acrobat Reader or Pro X, the rollover only works for a brief second..then reverts back to black - the original state.
This, combined with my latest problem with the show/hide button state, is really becoming a frustrating hassle:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3933451#3933451
    Any help would be appreciated.
    I'm running 7.5.1.
Is this an Acrobat issue?  The button function here seems to work in the InDesign preview mode.

Hhmmm...I'm actually having this problem even with Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional. Does this make sense?
Again, I'm creating the document in InDesign CS5 and then building the PDF with  Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional, and the rollover effects don't work in Adobe Acrobat 9, Adobe Reader 9, and Adobe Reader 10.
I'm a bit new to this process of software not providing its basic touted functionality. Is this the kind of thing where support for this functionality will vary from product to product? I had the same issue with PDF Portfolio -- where all its functioanlity was not supported in Adobe Reader X. If so, perhaps I should simply stick with the classic features of PDFs. Or can I trust, reliability, that going forward, this rollover effect will be supported in all Adobe Reader versions? This is quite an important issue for me as I provide all the documentation for my employer, including customer facing documentation -- and I simply don't know. Any recommendations?

  • InDesign cs6 crashes when exporting objects with drop shadows to interactive PDF

I am using the trial version of InDesign CS6 on a mac OSX 10.7.4  I need to export my document as an interactive PDF. I have found that the export works fine so long as none of the objects within my document have a drop shadow. However, if I add a drop shadow to any object (text, images, or video) InDesign will crash when I try to export. I am adding the drop shadow by selecting the object and then choosing Object > Effects > Drop Shadow. Is there another method I should be using to add the shadow if I want to export to an Interactive PDF?

Hi Peter, thanks for the response. Yes, I have tried creating a new blank project and adding one text object with a drop shadow and then exporting to Interactive PDF, and I experienced  the same result. I tried replacing my preferences as you suggested and found that it did not have any affect.
I continued developing my InDesign document without using any drop shadows and began to experience the same type of crashing under two more circumstances. 1. When relinking assets in my Links panel. 2. When exporting to interactive PDF with interactive objects that are being clipped (I get a warning telling me I have clipped objects before I export; when I click export I experience the same crash.) I have tried exporting the same file to a print (non-interactive) PDF and experienced no crashing.
I thought I should mention that I am using a retina display mac book pro with 16GB RAM. Could my graphics cards or the configureation of my machine be causing my issue?
    Thanks so much,

  • Interactive PDF rollover states flashing in Acrobat XI

    Hello,
I am having a problem with an interactive PDF I created in Adobe InDesign and am viewing in Acrobat XI. Any buttons that I have created with rollover states are flashing (disappearing and reappearing) whenever I actually mouse over them. A previous PDF I created with rollovers doesn't experience this problem at all and works fine. The functionality of the buttons still works but the flashing is very frustrating and looks unprofessional and this is for a client deliverable... Would love to know if there is any fix for this. The buttons and rollovers were created in InDesign (they are not links) so I have no idea why it keeps doing that.
I am running Adobe InDesign CC 2014.1 (10.1.0.71) and Adobe Acrobat XI version 11.0.10.
    Thanks!

  • How to place swf in Interactive PDF below other objects/frames

    Hello there,
My first post here , I hope one can help.
I want to make a PDF with some text/content on top, and swf animation in the background - below content.
So I place SWF file into InDesign, bring it to the layer below texts, then I make spread preview. Works great, I have a nice photos in the background changing one to another [swf animation] and on the top texts about these photos.
Then I export it to interactive PDF and it just doesn't work this way. Animation displayes always on top, covering content.
Is there a way to have a movie in Interactive PDF covered partially by some other elements or it will be always on top, and to achieve this effect I need to export my inDesign project to SWF?
    Best regards,

  • Interactive PDF in InDesign - works in Preview, not in export

Hello. I have a multi-state object set up. I've placed buttons over a central map on my page, with links to the proper multi-states in the object below. This works within the Preview Pane when I preview the interactivity. However, when i export non of the buttons bring up any multi-state.
Any ideas? What is changing between using the Preview pane within InDesign, and publishing the interactive PDF?
    I'm using InDesign CS5.5 version 7.5.3

I ended up creating a separate page for each State of the Multi-State object. A pain, yes, but it works, then you create the same illusion, but just have the buttons set to jump to a page and not a "state" within the same page. The MSO's are not that fancy that they should require Flash. I hope that Adobe works on this to make Interactive PDFs more robust in functionality, and in how we prep files. Creating a separate page for each "state" exponentially increases the document size.

  • Indesign CS5 Interactive PDF not really an Interactive PDF?

I have created an online Interactive SWF file using Indesign for a corporate Newsletter and it works fine.
However, when asked if I could produce a PDF version I thought "sure, just convert it to an Interactive PDF!"
I was shocked to find that it does not work and that basically I had to rip the whole thing apart and rebuild it to make it a PDF, as creating hyperlinks instead of button actions to me is not an Interative PDF, which is all it seems to infer.
All of the Object States had to be dismantled and placed on seperate pages.
None of the Buttons created to go to different pages worked anymore, I had to remove the button states from the objects and convert them using Hyperlinks and Hyperlink Destinations, a lot of work.
Surely, since Adobe own Indesign and also own Acrobat it would be possible to convert an Indesign Project to PDF and have the buttons work correctly?
Also, none of the animations work, these had to be scrapped.
Any plans for a future release to rectify this and the reduce workflow?

If you spent any time looking at these features you would have seen that they are clearly SWF only.
The workaround for this is to export the SWF and place it in a PDF.

  • ID CS6 Interactive Pdf with buttons is coming up blank

Please help. I am making a resume after recently graduating college. I have made the entire resume other than the "portfolio" page. I wanted to make the page show small images of my work, than when you roll over them they expand to show a larger image. I wanted to do this to show my progression with InDesign to potential employers, however, when I save the entire resume as an interactive .pdf the last "portfolio" page shows up blank every time. I have trouble shooted the process dozens of times to the point I want to pull my hair out. I made another new file separate from my resume which shows a white page. I put two pics only and when I previewed the buttons they worked fine, just like on my resume, but when I export the simple two pic document to an interactive .pdf the page comes up blank or black. The furthest I have made it is to have the smaller pics show up and when I hovered over them the pointer turns to a hand but no larger image shows up. I know it is in the exporting process cause I can get the buttons to work perfectly in the preview. WHAT am I doing WRONG??? Thanks.

    Hi there,
Do you have any screen grabs of what is going wrong?
From what I can understand, the first page is your standard text resume and then on the second page you have your portfolio.
But your portfolio is not working. The rollover to expand to show a larger image may be the cause of your issue. I've had tear my hair out moments also with trying to do this.
You could try to have the button images along the top or side of your second page and then get them to load into a larger frame below or to the side of the buttons. You can do this using Multi State objects. This may get you out of the bind you're in now.
To get a Multi State object to work in an interactive pdf you need to export the MSO (Multi State object) to swf and then add that swf to your interactive pdf export that and then you should be in business.
I'm going to knock up a basic mockup of one and put a screen grab in the reply to better explain this.
I've got the buttons up on top, you click on these to move through the portfolio of images. I've got five you may have more or less.
Select all the images and add them to the media panel to make a MSO.
Select each of the buttons and in the buttons panel add an action to go to a state, do this for each of the buttons.
Export the MSO doc as a swf, create a new doc (same dimensions) add the swf and then export as an interactive pdf (make sure to set a poster image in the media panel otherwise you'll get a weird grey flash symbol in your pdf)
Open the pdf and test to make sure it's what you want.
Obviously your portfolio / resume will look a hell of a lot better than this, this is just a proof of concept.
Here is a link to the files I used as a test.

    Hope this all makes sense.

  • Slideshow in interactive pdf (PDF is not a slideshow)

Hi, I am looking to create a slideshow in interactive pdf.
My first try i used images and created an object state.  I exported it to test and it didnt work.  The only way this option would work is to save as .swf.  I dont want document to be a swf but pdf.  So I found another solution to save the slideshow seperate as a swf and place into the pdf.  It works.  exported and it works.  This seems to be the better way.
Now the only issue is that when I open the interactive pdf, the slideshow shows up as a flash button.  You have to click on it for the slideshow to show up but it does work.
Is there a better way, or is there a way to automatically show the slideshow vs the flash button.
Ive uploaded it to drop box here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pkoqrb6n1ndpsqn/sAUk-gDPky
    Thanks

There's nothing you can do about this. It's a security setting and is set by each individual.
I would avoid SWF like the plague. It won't play on mobile devices at all.

  • Interactive PDF increases video size

    Hello,
I recorded some video tutorials on my Mac and scaled them down to 800 x 500 px in Premiere Pro CS5. The videos are looking good.
After placing them in InDesign CS5 and exporting them as an interactive PDF, settings for original size, the quality of the video is unbearable, because the size increased to 1190 x 716 px at 100 % magnification. I have no idea why that happens.
Exporting them at 75 % gives a better result, but how do I explain to my students, that 800 px at 100 % are 1190 px at 100 % in Acrobat Pro?
    Any help is highly appreciated!

I tested your file, and created one of my own with an MP3 file.
Your complaint is that the Preview panel only requires a single click while in the PDF, activating the button requires a double-click. The Preview panel is Flash-driven using InDesign CS5's Flash run-time implementation. So what it really previews accurately are SWF files. While much of it will also apply to PDF previewing, there are many kinds of interactivity (e.g., multi-state objects or animations) that preview fine but don't work at all in PDF. There are other things like this work "similarly" but not exactly. It's really NOT a PDF previewer though you can use it to some extent.
I hadn't encountered this problem in CS5 because I hadn't used buttons to activate sounds in Acrobat 9 or Acrobat X. If you create a button to play a video (I used F4V) a single click plays it. For MP3's, a single click seems to "select" the sound, but it requires a double-click to play it. I have no reason why that should be.
Notice also that you can pause over the sound or video itself, and a tooltip tells you "Click to activate."

  • InDesign interactive pdf viewable?

I'm creating InDesign interactive pdfs with embedded multi-state objects, vide, and Flash games... Needless to say I'm creating these on a Mac and they preview correctly, my question is how current do various users have to be on their Flash plugins in either Flash player or their browser? And, if they're bowser is up to date with the latest Flash plugin do they need to have Flash player at all?
    Thanks...

...This is a newsletter, distributed by email. NOT mobile browsers, phones etc.
Most of the interactive features in InDesign are viewable in an interactive pdf. My real question what's the difference between viewing this in acrobat reader as versus using the web plugin for the browser? Is the Flash plugin you download the same as the one that runs in the browser? So if a users browser pluing was updated with the latest version of flash would it matter if they have Flash player loaded... I'm not sure if it's all the same thing anyway as I have Flash loaded on my machine so I can't tell what the hecks going on with reader and the PC...

  • Exporting Interactive PDF

Been trying to export an Interactive PDF but non of the interactive elements work. I've implemented simple roll-overs for a few images, and when I view it in preview it all works fantastic, however once I export the Interactive PDF non of the interactivity works.
This is the first time i've worked using Interactive PDF's and i'm pulling my hair out trying to troubleshoot this issue without much luck finding any revelant information online.

What version of InDesign? What kind of interactivity are you creating?
Be aware that some forms of interactivity do not work in Interactive PDF. Animations and Object States do not work.
You should be able to do buttons, page transitions, hyperlinks, bookmarks, media (video and audio if you choose the correct format).
There is a workaround for animations and object states: You can export them as a SWF file, then place them into the InDesign file and export PDF.
BTW, there is a lot of information in the InDesign Help file. Start there.

  • ID CS6: Interactive PDF Buttons -- Random Errors

I'm creating a 50+ page catalog of tshirt designs. There are 4 rows of designs on each page (total 28 image objects), as well as a single preview area to the right of the rows which I've setup to show a closeup of design on rollover of the corresponding image in the row.  So, I've set each image in the row as a button, as well as corresponding closeup image which is set to show on roll over and hide on roll off.
My issue is that we are having what I can best describe as random glitches / errors with the buttons when exporting to interactive pdf.  I say random, because the errors are not consistent; you can open the file and 1 of the closeup images will be mistakenly showing until you roll over the corresponding image, yet you can open the same file again, and that issue will not be happening again. Another issue would be that a row of images (that should always be showing) will randomly not show on a page, but if you scroll to the next page and then back, they will be there.
For these reasons, I'm fairly certain that it is not an error in our setup, but simply a glitch.  Is there any sort of "save" setting that would eliminate these errors?
FYI: we are viewing the pdf on acrobat x pro and adobe reader on both windows 7 and windows 8.
