Object styles. Trouble placing images

When I place an image I have to clear object overides.
I have been using indesign since 1.5, this has only happened with CC.
It is arcane but it is driving me mad.
The content is not centered in the box.
Thanks in advance.
(PS. Random inability to save documents. Have to triple or quituple click text to select. And the program runs slow. Apart from this it's great. Hope I don't lose so much money I can no longer subscribe. This is the point Adobe jumped the shark.)

All patches up to date.
Please correct me – launch Indesign, open object styles, choose basic graphic frame, edit it to suit you and the square icon is showing.
This should be the style applied to new picture boxes and placed art?
Or am I wrong.
Because when I place pictures the style jumps to a 'none' with overides.
I have reinstalled etc. And this was one of the first odd things I noticed about CC
Please advise me.

  • Best-practice for use of object styles to manage image text wrap issues when aiming at both print and EPUB output?

    I have a work-flow question about object styles, text-wrap, and preparing a long document with lots of images for dual print/EPUB output in InDesign CC 2014.
    I am sort of experienced with InDesign but new to EPUB export. I have hundreds of pages and hundreds of images so I'd like to make my EPUB learning curve, in particular, less painful.
    Let me talk you through what I'm planning and you tell me if it's stupid.
    It's kind of a storybook-look I'm going for. Single column of text (6" by 9" page) with lots of small-to-medium images on the page (one or two images per page), and the text flowing around, sometimes right, sometimes left. Sometimes around the bounding box, sometimes following the edges of the images. So in each case I'm looking to tweak image size and placement and wrap settings so that the image is as close to the relevant text as possible and the layout isn't all wonky. Lovely print page the goal. Lots of fussy trade-offs and deciding what looks best. Inevitably, this will entail local overrides of paragraph styles. So what I want to do, I guess, is get the images as closely placed as possible, before I do any of that overriding. Then I divide my production line.
    1) I set aside the uniformly-styled doc for later EPUB export. (This is wise, right? Start for EPUB export with a doc with pristine styles?)
    2) With the EPUB-bound version set aside, I finish preparing the print side, making all my little tweaks. So many pages, so many images. So many little nudges. If I go back and nudge something at the beginning everything shifts a little. It's broken up into lots of separate stories, but still ... there is no way to make this non-tedious. But what is best practice? I'm basically just doing it by hand, eyeballing it and dropping an inline anchor to some close bit of text in case of some storm, i.e. if there's a major text change my image will still be almost where it belongs. Try to get the early bits right so that I don't have to go back and change them and then mess up stuff later. Object styles don't really help me with that. Do they? I haven't found a good use for them at this stage (Obviously if I had to draw a pink line around each image, or whatever, I'd use object styles for that.)
    Now let me shift back to EPUB. Clearly I need object styles to prepare for export. I'm planning to make a left float style and a right float style and a couple of others for other cases. And I'm basically going to go through the whole doc selecting each image and styling it in whatever way seems likeliest. At this point I will change the inline anchors to above line or custom, since I'm told EPUB doesn't like the inline ones.
    I guess maybe it comes down to this. I realize I have to use object styles for images for EPUB, but for print, manual placement - to make it look just right - and an inline anchor seems best? I sort of feel like if I'm going to bother to use object styles for EPUB I should also use them for print, but maybe that's just not necessary? It feels inefficient to make so many inline anchors and then trade them for a custom thing just for EPUB. But two different outputs means two different workflows. Sometimes you just have to do it twice.
    Does this make sense? What am I missing, before I waste dozens of hours doing it wrong?

    I've moved your question to the InDesign EPUB forum for best results.

  • Trouble Placing Image in the Right Spot

    I've taken over a site from someone else and cleaned it up as
    much as possible. But I'm too new to figure out how to do what I
    want. Any help would be appreciated.
    If you take a look at the page
    here, on the right
    hand side you'll see a menu with "About Us", "Events", "Careers",
    "Press Room", and "Contact Us". Underneath that menu is an image
    associated with a live chat application. I'd like it to always
    appear flush with the bottom of that cell. So there will always be
    additional space between "Contact Us" and the image and the height
    of that space (with the same blue background color) will change
    depending upon the number of menu items. Instead, the image is
    appearing directly below the menu and the extra space is being
    added after the image.
    Your help would be appreciated. The code exceeds the amount I
    can post in this thread but you can obviously view the source
    online.
    Thanks.

    Add the above to your meta code to emulate 7.0 and probably fix the problem, at least until you can find a fix in IE8.

  • Export Options not displaying in Object Style Options panel

    Hi,
    I'm trying to create an object style for decorative images as artefacts and set that style for export to PDF, but in the Object Style Options panel the Export Options settings (which I've seen before, bottom left of the panel) are not displayed. Can anyone tell me how I can make them visible? I'm on InDesign CS6.
    Thanks, Ally

    Hi changilainen2,
    Yes, we are following Adobe Forum!!!
    Thanks for your inputs. Actually while implementing this feature we were bit confused if it is of more importance to have these options in the Object Styles. That's why you are finding it missing from there.
    But feedback from you and some other folks, made us realize that we should have it in object styles too.
    Thanks we'll try incorporating this in the feature.

  • Placing a "photo caption" in a object style CS4

    I having trouble making a photo caption on a object style that I have built.
    I work in the print industry and we deal a lot with ag equipment and sales. We build magazines and brochures and like to keep them very consistent so we have a build an object box that we use for all our photo frames. We have also built a paragraph style that we use for the equipment description (photo caption) that goes on top of the picture. This is a tedious task since we have to line up every photo caption right on the inside edge of the pictures stroke. Sometimes we don't line it up right if we are in a hurry the photo caption is off the edge and exposing some of the picture or off the edge into the white space.
    I wanted to make it so every object style was consistent and that every photo caption was correct so I experimented with the object style options. I found that I can use a paragraph style and set it up perfectly:
    But then when I place an image into my object box, my paragraph style is cancelled. I cannot figure out where to go from here. Does someone know how to get this sort of object style with paragraphy style to work?

    A frame can contain an image or it can contain text, but not both at the same time. You need two frames (or a bit of trickery -- Dave saunders wrote a script a few years ago that would take a caption and seemingly put it into the same frame, but it was really grouping two frames and putting them both into yet a third one, if I remember rightly).
    Are all the images and all the captions the same sizes? If so, you could use a snippet or a library to store a paired image and caption frame with all the styling attached and the positions set.

  • Newly placed images not showing up and Text Styles not previewing correctly

    I was playing around with defining new text styles and they
    looked OK in Dreamweaver but when previewed in browser everything
    was in Times. I deleted all the pre-set styles trying to fix the
    problem out why when I realized now newly placed images don't show
    up in preview, but old images will. I can copy and paste an
    existing image and it will show, but not if I place it new. When
    trying to Manage Site, I kept getting a "Home page is not on

    done!!!

    >Home page is not on this...
    Several possibilities spring to mind the first of which is
    you haven't
    defined your site properly or at all
    >previewed in browser everything was in Times
    a link to your stylesheet has an incorrect path
    >realized now newly placed images don't show up in
    preview,
    they should, defined site again?
    If you have a URL we could see the code?
    If not can you post the code here, otherwise these are all
    guesses

  • Placing images into a multistate object

    Hey folks,
    Trying to figure out what's going on here. Thanks to some helpful folks here, I'm making inroads with JS programming, but I'm still hitting some bumps in the road.
    I've got a handful of graphics that I'm importing, and now I want to to turn them into a multistate object. Here's what I'm doing:
    var tabletSlideshow = app.activeDocument;
    tabletSlideshow.viewPreferences.horizontalMeasurementUnits = MeasurementUnits.PIXELS;
    tabletSlideshow.viewPreferences.verticalMeasurementUnits = MeasurementUnits.PIXELS;
    var slideshowImages = File.openDialog("Choose the images you want incuded", "Files:*.jpg", true);
    if((slideshowImages != "")&&(slideshowImages != null)){
    for (i=0; i<slideshowImages.length; i++)
    tabletSlideshow.pages.item(0).place(slideshowImages[i]);
    //get items for slideshow
    mySlideshow = tabletSlideshow.pageItems;
    app.select(mySlideshow);
    //this is where I get my errors
    tabletSlideshow.pages.item(0).pageItems(mySlideshow).multiStateObjects.add();
    //I've also tried this
    var myState = tabletSlideshow.pages.item(0).pageItem(mySlideshow).multiStateObjects.add();
    I know it's something silly, I just can't put my finger in it. I've managed to do:
    var myState = tabletSlideshow.pages.item(0).multiStateObjects.add();
    for (j=2; j<slideshowImages.length; j++)
    myState.states.add([j]);
    Which creates a new object state with the same number of states as graphics, but I'm not too sure of how to place the graphics inside each state.
    I know I'm making this way more complicated than it should be, and that's the problem. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
    N

    I don't have any experience with multistate objects, but:
    for (i=0; i<slideshowImages.length; i++)
    tabletSlideshow.pages.item(0).place(slideshowImages[i]);
    //get items for slideshow
    mySlideshow = tabletSlideshow.pageItems;
    app.select(mySlideshow);
    You should indent your loops!
    You should not be accessing your page item via the document's .pageItems array. The place() method will return an array of objects that are placed, so you should set a variable equal to its return value and use that.
    Also:
    myState.states.add([j]);
    That's just wrong! j is a number from 2 to {something}, so [j] is an Array containing one element, the number j. That cannot be what you want to pass to State.add(), which takes an object full of properties to add.
    Anyhow, back to your problem:
    //this is where I get my errors
    tabletSlideshow.pages.item(0).pageItems(mySlideshow).multiStateObjects.add();
    Why would this work? a PageItem does not have a multiStateObjects property. And it wouldn't make sense for it to do so -- a MultiStateObject is not contained within a PageItem! It is a type of PageItem. (Though it appears to be contained within some pageitems, like Rectangle, but let's not worry about that).
    So, if you want to add a new MultiStateObject, you'll have to add it to a page or a spread or something. Such as with
    var myMSO = tabletSlideShow.pages[0].multiStateObjects.add();
    Then you probably want to call the addItemsAsState() method on your MSO, with the placed item as the parameter.

  • Change stacking order of placed images/objects?

    Hello All,
    Is it possible to change the order of placed images in a PDF?
    I have a PDF with several objects in it, I want to be able to place an image into the PDF, and have it appear behind some of the objects and in front of others... is this possible?
    Example, let's say I have a PDF with a cartoon/comic word or thought bubble in it... I want to be able to place an image of my friend behind the word bubble object.
    I have Acrobat 9.0 Pro
    Thanks!

    As far as AS3 goes, I don't know what you mean, but it can be used pretty much the same way you use AS2, with the exception that in AS3 you cannot place code "on" object like you can in AS1/AS2... all code must be on the timeline.  Beyond that, there is no difference beyond alot of the code being different between the two languages.  The timeline remains as a place to build things in if you choose to.
    As far as your question goes, yes, you can have a rollover of a movieclip assign text to a textfield within it.  Let's say you're using AS2 and you have a movieclip named "button1" that contains a textfield named "tf1".  Code for that could be...
    button1.onRollOver = function(){
         button1.tf1.text = question1;
    And if you wanted to make tit so that clicking that same button shows the answer....
    button1.onRelease = function(){
         button1.tf1.text = answer1;

  • CS3-style of placing the images inside frames in CS4.

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to find a way to have the cs3 - style of placing the images into frames in the new Indy CS4. I mean when I hit cmd+D and draw a frame I don't want any scaling / fitting of the placed image. I know there's no scaling if you drop an image into existing frame but when you draw one on-the-fly it's either the frame that keeps the proportions of the image or when you hold shift the image gets scaled to fit into.
    I'd rather have the old style placing as an option - but didn't find such a switch anywhere in the prefs.
    Thnx.
    R.

    Interesting request. I wouldn't have thought anyone would want the older way of creating images in frames, but I guess there's always someone who wants the old ways.
    I can't find any preference to restore the behavior back to the pre-CS4 way.
    But if you want to work with images the old way, you can. Your commands are just a little different, in a different order. But you may actually save a step.
    Consider:
    b In CS3 you had to do the following:
    1. Drag to create a frame.
    2. Switch to the Direct Selection tool.
    3. If desired, change the position the image inside the frame
    4. If desired, scale the image inside the frame
    5. If desired, use the Fitting commands to fit the image inside the frame.
    b In CS4 you have to do the following:
    1. Drag to create a frame.
    2. Switch to the Direct Selection tool.
    3. Scale the image inside the frame.
    4. Position the image inside the frame.
    However, step 5 is probably eliminated as you already started with the image fitting inside the frame.
    I agree no one likes to need to learn new work habits, but it's not such a big deal.

  • Shouldn't object style with 'fit content to frame' work with updated images?

    I have a script that places pdf files from a list onto pages. The rectangles are built with an object style that fits content to frame.  This works,  but if the pdf file is then modified, InDesign does not fit the new content to the frame when the link is updated. Is there a reason why the object style does not honor its settings?
    Thanks.

  • [IDCS2] Trouble applying object styles

    I'm trying to apply an object style to a page item but I'm not having any success.<br /><br />I'm using IObjectStylesFacade::ApplyObjectStyleToUIDList to apply the style. <br />The style UID is coming from the IStyleNameTable/IID_IOBJECTSTYLENAMETABLE in the doc workspace using FindByName, the UIDList argument contains a kMultiColumnItemBoss (I needed to navigate down from a kSplineItemBoss to get it... this seems legitimate from the layout chapter in the docs), and I'm getting the K2Vector<ClassID> of categories from IObjStylesAttrCategoriesList::GetApplyCategories (I've tried an empty list as well).<br /><br />ApplyObjectStyleToUIDList returns with kSuccess, but the page item always ends up with the style "None". I've tried a few other things (mostly regarding which page item is passed through the UIDList) but nothing has changed. Is there anything clearly wrong with my approach? I'm doing the same thing in CS3 and haven't had any problems, strangely.

    It looks like I was attempting to apply the style to a kMultiColumnItemBoss. The target should be a kSplineItemBoss. I thought I was doing this originally, but I must've been mistaken since it's working now with that change.

  • Can you set object style to Fit to Content?

    Hi all,
    I'm setting up a document for an exhibition showguide and before I get too bogged down, I could do with some help.
    Each exhibitor gets a text entry, with a logo alongside. There will be a few hundred exhibitors in total.
    To make things as easy as possible (I hope) I've made a anchored image frame to hold the logos (40mm wide x 40mm tall), which is anchored to the Company Name. This should mean that the logo stays with the correct entry at all times.
    Once I've put my text in, I will have a couple of hundred empty image frames into which I can drag and drop the logos. I've set the 'Fitting on Empty Frame' to Fit Content Proportionally so that the logos all fit nicely.
    The problem is that, after I have placed all the logos into the document, I want to make all the anchored logo frames change from Fit Content Proportionally, to FIt Frame to Content, so that the frame will shrink around any logos that are less than 40mm tall.
    I can't find a way of doing this.
    Is there a way to select all anchored objects, so that I can change the Fit setting in one hit?
    Or, is there a way to set the object style to Fit Frame to Content?
    I feel that I should be able to automate this, but the process/solution is eluding me.
    Cheers
    Colin

    As far as I know, the only way to do this would be by script after the images have all been placed. You should ask over in scripting.

  • Add Strokes to Placed Images in Illustrator

    Hi All,
    I'm having a problem to add a stroke "frame" around my tiff image in Illustrator. My image is a "traced picture" from Photoshop. I used the following technique:-
    Technique: Use an Effect
    Choose File > Place and select an image to place into Illustrator document.
    Choose File > Place and select an image to place into Illustrator document.
    The image is selected. Open Appearance panel and from the Appearance panel flyout menu, choose Add New Stroke.
    With the Stroke highlighted in the Appearance panel, choose Effect > Path > Outline Object.
    However, the result I got was the stroke around the image NOT the frame around the image.
    How do I  achieve it. Any help and tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Technique #1: Use a Mask
    This technique requires Illustrator CS3 and works only when your keyline will be rectangular in shape.
    Choose File > Place and choose an image to place into your Illustrator document. You can either Link or Embed the image. Once you've chosen the image, click the Place button.
    The image is selected (if your image already exists in your document, select it now), so if you look in your Control panel at the top of the screen, you'll see a button labeled "MASK". Click on it. This creates a mask at the exact bounds of the image.
    Press the "D" key for Default. This gives the mask a black 1 pt stroke attribute. Adjust the stroke per your design needs.
    NOTE: An additional benefit to this method of using a mask is that you now have the elements in place to simulate a "frame and image" paradigm like InDesign. Once you've created your mask, you can decide to "crop" your image by double clicking anywhere on the photo. This will put you into Isolation Mode. Now click on the frame edge and resize at will. When you're done, double click outside the image to exit isolation mode and continue working. This method works wonderfully when you're using the Selection tool (black arrow) and have the Bounding Box option turned on (in the View menu).
    Technique #2: Use an Effect
    At first, it may seem that applying a keyline with the use of an Effect is a tedious process. But we all know that once we've applied an effect, we can store it as a Graphic Style, at which point applying our keyline will become a single click. Go ahead, ask me why Adobe doesn't ship Illustrator with such an effect as a default setting in the NDPs (New Document Profiles). Go ahead, ask me why Adobe doesn't allow us to assign keyboard shortcuts to styles like InDesign does. I don't have answers to either of those questions (sorry). But let's get on with the styles, shall we?
    There are two separate effects that we can use, and each provides a different benefit.
    Choose File > Place and select an image to place into your Illustrator document. You can either Link or Embed the image. Once you've chosen the image, click the Place button.
    The image is selected (or if your image already exists in your document, select it). Open your Appearance panel and from the Appearance panel flyout menu, choose Add New Stroke. We can't see the stroke yet, because all we have is an image. But we'll change that in short order.
    With the Stroke highlighted in the Appearance panel, choose Effect > Convert to Shape > Rectangle. Check the Preview button, select the Relative option, and set both the Extra Width and Extra Height to zero (0). (Be careful not to press Tab after you enter the second value, or it will switch back to Absolute.) Click OK to apply the effect. Style the stroke attribute to match your design preference.
    Now make this easier to apply in the future. With the object still selected, open the Graphic Styles panel and click the New Graphic Style button at the bottom of the panel. Give the style an appropriate name. If you then add this style to your NDPs, it will be readily available in all new files that you create.

  • Placed Image Size and Quality Difference

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm running Adobe Indesign cs6 Version 8.01
    I have a document that is 2048px x 1536px (for iPad Retina display Resolution).
    I reszied all my images to be roughly 1140px x 760px at 300PPI
    When I place the images in Indesign it Resizes the image to 272px x 180px
    The effective pixels are and actual pixels are 300PPI at the resolution I resized them in photoshop according to the links section
    The quality of preview is set to High Quality
    In the preferences under File Handling Preserve Image Dimensions when Relinking is on
    I tried saving the image in Jpeg, Tiff, and PNG formats to solve the problem
    I set my default object style to Place Gun Frame and make sure Auto-fit is checked and Content Fitting is set to None.
    What can be done to rememdy this problem?
    I just want the images I resized in Photoshop CS6 to be placed in the exact dimensions as I resized them to make placing files simple and easy.
    If you can please help with this problem as soon as possible I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you so much

    Hi Peter,
    Thank you for your quick Reply.
    I saved it at 72ppi and the appearance changed to the actual PX dimensions specifed.
    Hope Adobe can fix this glitch to adapt display the image using the Pixel dimensions and not the image dimensions (size in inches or points).
    Thank you so much.

  • Apply an object style

    About a year ago, someone helped me create a script that applies a Character Style.
    The script is:
    try {app.selection[0].appliedCharacterStyle = "Red"} catch(e){}
    How do I do a similar thing for an Object Style?

    HI
    I am not sure if this will get a reply as it is an old thread, but I have tried your method Dave:
    myLossenge.appliedObjectStyle = app.documents[0].objectStyles.item("PriceBox");
    where there IS an object style called PriceBox, but the style does not get applied.
    Any ideas?.....
    Just answered it myself, 'myLossenge' is the image that has been placed, 'myLossengeFrame' is what I need to apply the style to.
    No need to post this, but may be helpful top others doing the same thing!.
