Objects with basic feather won't export to PDF

Here's one I haven't experienced before . . . I am designing an ad and it has
multiple layers. Photos of varying opacities on top of one another. When I try to make a pdf to send a proof to the customer, everything is there except for the photos. I've narrowed it down to photos that have a basic feather applied to soften the edges so they will blend together. The opacity doesn't seem to be the problem as none of the pictures will print, except the ones with no feather. Has anyone run into this before?

Hi Peter,
I am on a Mac with Snow Leopard v. 10.6; Indesign CS4 v. 6.0.4
Regarding the PDF settings, I'm mostly in a default state. I know that sounds lame, but I'm fairly new to this and I've never had trouble before. Is there any specific setting I need to look for. I've looked through but nothing jumps out as being obvious - scared to change anything I don't understand and really screw things up.

  • Object with gradient feather disappears upon export to pdf

I'm troubleshooting a file where an object with a gradient feather disappears from the exported .pdf file. The rest of the file is perfect. I've tried different .pdf presets. I've tried moving the offending object to its own layer at the bottom of the layer stack. I've tried copying all the art to a new file. I've tried grouping everything. Nothing is working. I can successfully export to .jpg format. I'm using InDesign CS5 on an iMac. Thanks for any suggestions.

InDesign file on the left, PDF on the right.

  • InDesign CS5 won't export to PDF

I've been having a problem recently when exporting to PDF in InDesign CS5.  I get an error message which says:
1 problem was found with a background task:
    Export: "NameOfDocument" (1)
It won't export to PDF.  What can I do about this?  Many thanks.

Oh, sorry.  Forgot about the specifics.

  • Basic feather does not carry to PDF in CS4

    Using InDesign CS4 6.0.5 on Mac OS X 10.4.11
A client supplied a file that has a single piece of art going across a 2-page spread. The art frame has "basic feather" applied to soften the edges. When we create a PDF of this spread, the feather shows up fine on the right page. But the feather doesn't show up at all on the left page. The art is simply cropped at the frame edge! This happens whether we make a PDF of both pages at once, or one page at a time. I even tried duplicating the frame and cropping it so each page has only its own frame.
We're creating PDFs by printing to Postscript files, and then distilling w/ Acrobat Distiller.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Are you sure the printer won't accept a properly exported PDF from InDesign? You should ask. Most printer specs that require distilled PDF are ancient and reflect that early versions of Quark were incapable of producing a usable PDF by exporting. Try sending a PDF exported to PDF/X1-a standards and see if they can RIP it.
It they tell you no, it's time to seriously look for a printer who has moved into the 21st century, or stop using advanced features in your designs.

  • CS5 - Graphic with feathered edge disappears when exported to PDF

I just ran into an odd problem, and unfortunately the book got printed before we saw the problem … ugh!
I set up a chapter header for a book. It was a graphic of wood to which I added a 0p9 feathered edge. In a text box on top of this, I put the chapter name in white type. They were both on the same layer, but the text box was on top.
I didn't notice at the time that when I exported the page to PDF, the graphic disappeared … and since the type was white, the whole chapter header was invisible. If I opened the PDF in Acrobat Pro using Pitstop, I could select a box where it was supposed to be, but couldn't make it show up.
I tried creating another layer and moving the text up to that; no good. The only way I was eventually able to make that darn wood graphic show up on the PDF was if I shut off the feathered edge.
Now I know I've used a feathered edge frequently, and have never run into this problem before. Does anyone have any idea why this time should be any different? There's was no color other than black, only one layer, and nothing was set to non-printing. I used the same export settings I always use. Stumped here … and very unhappy that we missed it and printed the book without the headers (my fault for not catching it, but doesn't make me any happier).
    Specs:
    Mac OS 10.5.8
    InDesign CS5 (version 7.0)
Export setting - set to print to Acrobat 8/9 compatibility (PDF 1.7) with crop marks on
Hoping someone has some insight here. It's too late for the current job, but I'd like to know why it did it so I can avoid the problem in the future.

    Hi John,
My InDesign files are too big to upload anywhere, but these two screen shots show an example of this problem.
This is how the spread looks in InDesign (link and effect info for right image shown):
... and this is how the exported PDF spread looks (normal "Press Quality" export setting):
As you can see, several, but not all, objects with transparent effects have disappeared.

  • Indesign won't export to pdf

    Hi everyone,
I've just upgraded to Indesign CS5. I've also downloaded the patch so that it's version 7.03.
When I try to export to pdf, I get an error that says: 1 problem was found with a background task: Failed to export an eps item on page A.
I get the same error when I try to export any file at all.
Anyone know why this is happening? It worked fine in CS4.
    Appreciate any advice.

Try putting a couple of random files together in a book and see if that will export. Books export to PDF in the foreground, so this should tell us if the problem is in the background task itself, or something else.
If it's happening with all files, my instinct is it is either corrupt preferences, a conflict with some other software, or a damaged instalation of ID. I think som Firefox plugins have been implicated in odd behavior in ID, and of course third party ID plugins are always suspect. Try cloing all other apps and see if it makes a difference, and deactvate any optional plugins, including any font auto-activation. If that doesn't work, the next thing I would try is Replace Your Preferences, followed by a reinstall as a last resort.
Have you ever been able to use the background export? Can you export to .idml instead? What's the OS?

  • Pages 5.2.2 won't export to PDF

    Hi, all—
I've created a Pages 5.2.2 doc. It's saved in iCloud. I try to "Export to PDF" and get an error message:
"The document [name of doc] could not be exported as [name of doc--whether I leave it the same or change it]."
This happens when I try to save to my desktop. It happened when I tried, as a go-around, to save as Pages 09, too.
Anyone know why this is so? And how to fix?
    Many thanks,
    Liz

    Liz,
    Slightly off topic
Seeing how your iMac is from 2007 your problem with permissions happened when Apple changed some of the underlying Unix (BSD) software. The permission structure got changed to allow what is known as Access Control Lists (ACL) and for computers that had older OSs(Tiger…) originally, this caused lots of problems.
Many folks including myself that used Migration Assistant to upgrade then got messed up computers. A tell tale sign of this is having to always use your password to move almost any file. Very annoying. Unfortunately, not easy to clean up as you need to change system files and use terminal. There is a GUI program out there to fix this, but totally forgetting the name right now.
Backing up your computer to an external drive, erasing the internal drive, doing a clean install, change your user name(s)(if more than one user) and password(s), re-install software and then manually re-installing documents will clear up your problems.
Don't use Migration Assistant or you will reproduce the problems. MA is an all or nothing program and brings all the crud along.
The great thing about this approach is that your computer will be like new, fast and frees up hdd space.
A slightly different approach would be to replace the internal hdd maybe even install a ssd and put the old drive in an external enclosure or dock. When you need a document you'd have access.
    Major hassle and time.
    Hope this helps, Greg

  • InD suddenly won't export to pdf

I've been exporting files to pdf all day to send to my printer, and suddenly InDesign won't export anymore. Pop ups open as usual, but nothing happens.Grrrrrrr!!

    Are you patched to 7.0.4?
Is the export hanging in the background, or is a file  supposedly created, but non-exisitent? Have you opened the Background Tasks panel to see if the task is completing?
Can you export in the foreground by putting the file in a Book?

  • Numbers won't export to pdf

Whenever I try to export to pdf from Numbers, I get this error message:
This is frustrating because of course the file does not exist. I want numbers to create the file. I like numbers as a program, but I can't just send people numbers files, they can't open them. I need to be able to easily pdf my work.
The method I'm using is File>export to>pdf... Then I once that window is open I select next, choose a name to save the pdf, and then I get the above error message.
    I'm using Numbers 3.5.2.
I successfully saved as pdf from the print screen, but I don't want to have to take 3 extras steps just because the export command has a bug.

Suggest in your menu Numbers > Provide Numbers Feedback that you report this problem to Apple... after, of course, you have tried closing Numbers, and restarting your Mac to see if the problem still persists. It might be a temporary glitch.

  • Indesign Cs6 won't export to pdf

I am publishing  a book and every time I try to upload it to a pdf it says:
"Cannot save to file because it is in use by one or more background tasks. I have read a few other forums but I could not figure out how to fix mine. It is adobe Indesign cs6.
I need help asap, I am supposed to send to the printer Monday.

Windows > Utilities >Background Tasks will show you what task is using the file.
Exporting as PDF is itself a background task.

  • Objects in InDesign files disappear when exported to PDF (CS5.5)

I have some text that was created to outlines, filled and has a drop shadow applied. When I export the document to pdf, part of the text (the fill) disappears, and all I get is the drop shadow. I tried changing to a non-spot color, I tried removing all attributes, and nothing seems to work! I also tried copying that artwork to the clipboard and pasting it into an Illustrator file (says it is too big to fit the pasteboard, which I verified sizes - and it should fit. I tried copying the paths and pasting them in Photoshop as a smart object... no luck either. What am I missing? Thanks in advance for any help!

FYI - in the "Adobe InDesign Component Infirmation" dialogue box I learned all kinds of info - are you looking for something in particular? I learned that the document was created in InDesign version 7.0.4.553 (which is what I think I was using before I updated my InDesign earlier today)
There aren't particular obvious signs, no.
Generally at this point the right way to track this down is to work with a copy of the document, and delete pages or objects in the document until you find the cause of the problem. Then look at it closely, perhaps look at the IDML file, or make it available so we can look at it.
It sounds like you have a workaround, but if you have time, it might worth trying to find the real problem.

  • Reporting Services with out national character after export to PDF

I have problem with exported report to PDF(sended by job)on some devices(pc, mobile, tablets),i dont see any text correctly, only undefinied symbols, problem only exists on exported reports, on SSRS by WEB looks correctly,

    Region: Poland.

    Hello,
According to your description, it is contains non-English characters in your report. This problem occurs because the glyph IDs for some non-English characters have changed in some font files.
In Cumulative Update #1 for SQL Server 2008 is automatic full font embedding and subsetting for Unicode characters in Reporting Services 2008 PDF rendering. Please update SSRS 2008 to SSRS 2008 CU1 to resolve the issue.
There is a KB article about Incorrect characters appear in a SQL Server Reporting Services report after you export it to a PDF file, you can refer to it.

  • Logo jpeg won't export to pdf in forms central

I am having an issue when I export my form to a pdf to my desktop.  The form looks great in forms central, however when I go to export as a pdf the company logo is not there.  What can i do to rectify this?  I would like to use the form as a hard copy and not just on line
    Thanks,
    Jason

    Hi;
George is correct, the PDF generated by FormsCentral does not support a CMYK color profile in JPEG/JPG.  You can change the color profile of the image, steps would depend on what application you were using to edit the image.
You are welcome to send me the image at [email protected] to confirm if this is the issue with your image (if needed I can return an RGB version to you).
    Thanks,
    Josh

  • Objects missing when exporting to PDF, but show up when printing to PDF

Hi - I'm working with someone, both of us in InDesign CS4, and she has some documents that cause a few random objects to just go missing when exported to PDF (same on my computer). But when printing to PDF, they show up fine. They also show up fine if we recreate each individual object, but that can end up being a lot of work. She prefers to export to PDF because of quality. I'm drawing a blank on this one!
The attached file shows the issue. The green blocks just don't want to show up when exporting.

    Peter -
The links are just the PDFs of the black and white portions and don't really matter too much since they show up fine when exporting or printing to PDF. Our main concern is the green blocks, which are indeed the green areas of the plan you pointed out. They are actually separate objects created directly within InDesign that can be moved and adjusted.
I just updated to 6.0.4 and that didn't help. I wonder if this may be a variant of the bugs I was reading about with master pages and certain things not showing up when creating PDFs or printing (even though none of these things are on the master page)?
    Thanks

  • Exporting to pdf with new numbers app

recently i upgraded from numbers 09 to numbers 3.0. i have a worksheet with 2 pages. with numbers 09 when i export to pdf it export as pdf with 2 pages works fine. but in numbers 3.0 when i wxport the same worksheet it combines both pages in one pdf page so i can't print it on 2 pages. any solution ?

    Vikas
The solution is to Print to PDF rather than Export to PDF.
You will see that there are two pages in the Print dialog preview, and when you choose PDF, Open in Preview, you will see that the PDF version of the file has two pages.
