Observation between os x 10.2 vs 10.4

Hi,
I've read several places that newer versions of OS X run faster than older versions.
I have a heavily upgraded Powermac Gigabit (1.4 ghz sonnet, 1 gb ram, 7000 ATI Radeon), and I have just recently setup a dual boot setup with both Tiger and Jaguar - and was pretty surprised to personally find that Jaquar is much snappier than tiger.
Makes me wonder if everyone says they think later OS X versions are faster just because they want to believe it is .
Anyways just sharing .

10.0 to 10.3 became faster, as Apple engineers did a lot of optimization without adding too much to the +eye candy+ and feature set. Things like RAM requirements, not the absolute minimum but the recommended minimum, stayed about equal.
10.4 added a lot more features and, so it was the first release to of Mac OS X that did not run faster on the same hardware. And RAM requirements, both minimum and recommended, about doubled. However, on some Macs, 10.4 may have seemed faster because of better optimized video drivers. Others may report it is faster on their Mac than 10.3 was, because they just did a fresh System installation when they upgraded to Tiger (and their Panther System was not working OK but not 100%), or because they upgraded their RAM at the same time, or both.
10.5 added even more features and RAM requirements doubled again. 10.5 is definitely slower than previous releases on the same hardware, at least on the PowerPC side.
So I in my opinion, it is true for the four release of 10.0 through 10.3, but not true for 10.4 and 10.5.

  • Accessing Multiple Observers in an Observable class

    Hi! I have 2 Observers added via:
    this.addObserver() on my 1 Observable class.
    The 1st Observer works fine when i call:
    setChanged();
    notifyObservers("SomeArgument");However, when i pass a different argument to the 2nd Observer that i added, it still uses the first Observer...
    So, I am wondering what i am doing wrong - how can i access the 2nd Observer in this class?
    I hope that I am being clear enough on this!
    Regards

    ok, here goes
    The Observable class has calls such as:
    setChanged();
    notifyObservers("AnEvent");
    // Something else happens...
    setChanged();
    notifyObservers("AnotherEvent");
    Normally this is done inside one of the methods of the Observable. I have to assume you are doing this since notifyObservers() is protected.
    Each of these notifications will go to ALL registered Observers. You cannot pick and choose since this would break the decoupling in the Observables between the Observables and the Observers.
    >
    Now, i want to assign Observers to this Observable class via:
    addObserver(objectObserver1);
    addObserver(objectObserver2);
    Yep, standard. So ALL notifications will go to both objectObserver1 and objectObserver2 .
    >
    So, how can I indicate that the observer i want to use is objectObserver2?This does not make sense. objectObserver2 is the observer.
    >
    Now after writing this - i see what you are saying when you state:
    The Observable knows nothing about the Observers but the Observers know about the Observable.but by supplying an argument e.g. notifyObservers("AnotherEvent"); i am breaking that rule. Correct?
    Is this the intended use of the argument in notifyObservers() or is there another way of determining which Observer to use that i am missing?There is not concept of "which Observer to use" . Any notification of 'events' will go to ALL registered observers by invoking thevoid update(Observable o,
                Object arg) method on the Observer.
    If some Observers don't wish to process a particular event then they don't have to. In the update() method of my Observers I have a short set of 'if' statements so as to select select which notification events they need to process.

  • Differences between sound car

    I'm a little confused. what's the difference between?x-fi xtrememusic and x-fi xtremegaming?And what makes x-fi xtremegaming fidelty pro better, except for the "x-ram", than the ordinary x-fi xtremegaming?

    From what I can see and have read, not much is different between the music and gamer cards. Software specifically for music I think is included with the music card. Probably something specific is included for the gamer card the music card doesn't have. Other than that, nothing. And your observation between the fatality and the gamer is pretty much correct. No other differences that I can tell and to me not worth the addition cost as most games do not yet take advantage of the ram, plus creative's shoty drivers especially on Vista made an easy choice for me. Although if I were you, I would seriously look for alternati'ves to any of Creative's sound cards unless you are prepared for major headaches especially if you are running VIsta.

  • Color Managed Printing from LR 1.3.1 Inverse of Proper PS CS3 10.0.1 Behavior

    Please excuse the length and detail of this post - I'm just trying to be very clear...
    Also, it would be helpful if anyone having definitive information about this topic could please email me directly in addition to replying to this forum topic, in order that I might know a response is available sooner (I am new to this forum, and may not check it regularly). My direct email address is [email protected].
    Bottom Line: Color managed printing using my own custom-generated profiles from LR 1.3.1 to my Epson 7600 (on Intel-based Mac OS X 10.5.2, but saw the same behavior with 10.5.1) using the current Epson 7600 Intel/10.5x-compatible driver (3.09) is broken, and appears to be doing the exact opposite (inverse) of what I would expect and what PS CS3 does properly.
    I am color management experienced, and have been using my custom-generated EPSON 7600 profiles with reliable soft proofing and printing success in PS (both CS2 and now CS3) for some time now. I know how the EPSON printer driver should be set relative to PS/LR print settings to indicate desired function. Images exported from LR to PS and printed from PS using "Photoshop Manages Color" and proper printer driver settings ("No Color Adjustment") print perfectly, so it isn't the Intel-based Mac, the OS, the driver, the profile, or me -- it is LR behaving badly.
    The specific behavior is that printing from LR using "Managed by Printer" with the EPSON driver's Color Management setting set properly to "Colorsync" prints a reasonable-looking print, about what you would expect for canned profiles from the manufacturer, and in fact identical to the results obtained printing the same image from PS using "Printer Manages Color". So far so good. Switching to my specific custom profiles in LR and printing with the driver's CM setting set properly to "No Color Adjustment" yields results that are clearly whacked, for both LR settings of "Perceptual" and "Relative CM". Just for completeness and out of curiosity, I tried printing from LR using the same profile (once for "Perceptual" and once more for "Relative CM") with the EPSON driver's CM setting set IMPROPERLY to "Colorsync", and the results were much more in line with what you would expect - I would almost say it was "correct" output. This is why I used the phrase "inverse of proper behavior" in the subject line of this topic. Going one step further, trying this same set of improper settings in PS (PS print settings set to "Photoshop Manages Color" with either Perceptual or Rel CM selected, but using "Colorsync" rather than "No Color Adjustment" in the Color Management pane of the EPSON printer driver) yields whacked results as you would expect that look identical to the whacked results obtained from LR using "proper" settings.
    I said above that the improper settings from LR yielded results that I would almost say were correct. "Almost" because the benchmark results rendered by PS using proper settings are slightly different - both "better" and closer to each other - than those rendered by LR using the improper settings. The diffs between the Perceptual and Rel CM prints from LR using improper settings showed more marked differences in tone/contrast/saturation than the diffs observed between the Perceptual and Rel CM prints from PS using proper settings - the image itself was in-gamut enough that diffs between Perceptual and Rel CM in the proper PS prints were quite subtle. Even though the improper LR prints were slightly inferior to the proper PS prints, the improper LR prints were still within tolerances of what you might expect, and still better (in terms of color matching) than the "Managed by Printer" print from LR. At first guess, I would attribute this (the improper LR prints being inferior to the proper PS prints) to the CMM being used by LR being different from (inferior to) the CMM I have selected for use in PS (that being "Adobe (ACE)"). I can live with the LR CMM being slightly different from that use

    (Here's the 2nd half of my post...)
    I said above that the improper settings from LR yielded results that I would almost say were correct. I can live with the LR CMM being slightly different from that used in PS - that is not the issue here. What is at issue is trying to determine why LR is clearly behaving differently than PS in this well-understood area of functionality, all other variables being the same. (And, incidentally, why am I not seeing other posts raising these same questions?)
    My "workaround" is to use "Managed by Printer" for printing rough prints from LR and to do all other printing from PS, especially given the noted diffs in CMM performance between LR and PS and the fact that printing from PS also supports using Photokit Sharpener for high-quality prints. Still it would be nice to understand why this is happening in LR and to be able to print "decent" prints directly from LR when it seemed appropriate.
    Any insights or suggestions will be very much appreciated. Please remember to reply to my direct email address ([email protected]) in addition to your public reply to this forum.

  • Pmap and shared libraries

    I'm trying to subtract the "shared" mappings from the output that pmap
    produces and show memory usage per process and a separate shared
    memory usage for the system.
    Pmap shows shared library mappings like this ...
    Address Kbytes Resident Shared Private Permissions Mapped File
    FF080000 656 616 600 16 read/exec libc.so.1
    FF132000 32 32 - 32 read/write/exec libc.so.1
    It looks like all processes that have access to libc.so have
    the same mapping. It was my understanding that the Shared and Private allocations (at least in the read/exec mapping) were a fixed
    characteristic of the particular shared library.
    Where is the 40 Kbytes that are not currently used? Virtual, swapped
    out?, but would it be Shared or Private?

    No, not all processes mapping a shared library have the same
    shared/private .text section allocations.
    The shared libraries are tuned for maximum sharing, that is they
    are compiled as position independant code so most of the .text
    section (program code) can be mapped without changes into each
    process, at whatever virtual address is appropriate for each
    process. All the code that needs to be adapted for a certain
    virtual address is concentrated at one place in the .text section
    (procedure linkage table, global offset table, ...). This part
    of the shared library cannot be shared between processes and is
    typically what you see as the "private" part of the .text section
    in the pmap -x output. The non sharable .text section part is
    just the procedure linkage table, global offset table, ... and
    thus is ~ the same size for each process.
    By using mprotect on the .text section or by setting breakpoints
    into the .text section (to name two exceptions) you are able to
    make changes to more parts of the shared .text sections, so that
    you get more 'private' pages in a processes' address space. Here's
    an example with breakpoints:
    <pre>
    4% adb /bin/cat
    main:b
    :r
    breakpoint at:
    main: save %sp, -0x190, %sp
    printf:b
    memmove:b
    atoi:b
    malloc:b
    getenv:b
    :c
    breakpoint at:
    getenv: save %sp, -0x60, %sp
    </pre>
    Now in another window you can verify with pmap -x that cat's copy of
    libc.so with several breakpoints (=changes, private copies) in the
    .text section has more private memory allocated:
    <pre>
    FF280000 656 616 568 48 read/exec libc.so.1
    </pre>
    While some other processes' copy of libc.so at the same time has:
    <pre>
    FF180000 656 616 592 24 read/exec libc.so.1
    </pre>
    The 40Kbytes difference you've observed between the .text sections'
    size and the resident size are VM pages not loaded in main memory.
    If these VM pages have not been changed, then they can be paged in
    from the shared lib's file, else there have been changes to these
    pages and they resides on the swap space.

  • Newport Center Mall (Jersey City, NJ) - Verizon Store Nightmare

    I have never met more INCOMPETENT people than at the Verizon Store in the Newport Center Mall (Jersey City, NJ).  This is the 4th time that I have had to deal with a representative who is disrespectful and ignorant.  Yesterday afternoon I decided to give this store a 4th try to see if they could persuade my horrible opinion of them, well I was disappointed…yet again. The ONLY reason I go to this store is due to lack of options in the area.  Even the simplest of tasks (such as today – I asked if they could put on a screen protector which I had bought from Verizon months prior) is a challenge.  I barely make it 5 feet in the door without having someone roll their eyes or speak down to me with a smug attitude regardless of the situation. I work in a customer-oriented, product driven industry and it takes a lot for me to get to this point but I have FINALLY had it with this store!!!!  Someone from corporate headquarters needs to put these reps through rigorous “human decency” training.  It’s disgusting and pathetic how these Newport Center representatives treat customers (in fact, I have witnessed with my business associates several conversations with other customers that were of the same demeanor).  I am better off going out to my way, paying a $13 toll and visiting any Verizon store in Staten Island because believe it or not, their Customer Service is awesome.  Or better yet, how about your COMPETITOR helped me in less than 5 minutes with NO QUESTIONS asked in the same mall.
    This review was all because your store REFUSED to put on a Verizon-bought screen protector!  I have been a Verizon Wireless customer for 12 years...looks like I might be switching service providers soon because your competitor received major kudos for a job well done yesterday.
    Oh, and if Verizon would like the name of the specific representative who I had the pleasure of working with yesterday please let me know!

    Interesting reading and well written to boot I also live in JS, in Newport area. Before getting iPhone 3G a week ago I had at&t Blackjack 3G. My main observation between Newport and Manhattan Midtown where I work is that in respect to signal and reception (and even battery life) both iPhone and Blackjack behave similarly in same places. Flip-flop speeds between Edge and 3G are similar also. All this means mostly 3-5 3G bars including my 15th floor apartment and 25th floor Park Avenue office. Exceptions are things like 34th street Path station (1-2 Edge bars), some spots around Newport marina where both phones fall to Edge and naturally enclosed indoor places like bathrooms inside both apartment and office, elevators and such.
    With both phones I also noticed that even outdoors at&t 3G coverage in the same spot seems to fluctuate with weather, time of the day and who knows what else. For example it can flip flop rapidly between 5 bars 3G and 5 bars Edge. In other thread someone knowledgeable called this cell tower "breathing" related to 3G nature and shared bandwidth usage.
    I'm not sure but after updating yesterday to 2.0.1 I noticed that my iPhone now tends to stay at 5 bars Edge where it previously had 5 bars 3G. Before update the phone will momentary be at Edge when I take it off from the pocket or exit elevator and then pretty fast it'll switch back to 3G. Now under same conditions it seems to stay at Edge almost indefinitely. Rebooting switches it back to 3G. I'm afraid that now Apple decided to err on a side of caution and is trying to keep iPhone on Edge as long as possible. Before that people (not me) were complaining that iPhone will try to hold on onto 3G even when there basically were no signal.

  • Query and Workbook BI 7.0

    Hi
    I am in BI 7.0
    1)I created a query X and saved it as workbook. When I edit the changes in query, I don't see the changes reflected in workbook.I thought if I change the query or workbook, the changes should take place.
    2) I have to create 12 queries of same structure but contains different hardcoded costcenters.Can somebody advice me what is the  best method to accomplish the above requirement.Should I create query or query views and what major differences did you guys observe between Query and Query View from your expereince and practices...

    Hi Jacky,
        If you change the query this way you wont have to re-insert the query each time you make changes.
    1. Open the workbook.
    2. Select the query by clicking on it. Then use the Edit query option from the toolbar.
    3. Make changes to the query.
    4. Execute the query by clicking the Green check mark.
    5. After making sure that the changes have been applied, save the workbook.
    Hope this helps...

  • Special characters converted in wrong in Upper case ?

    Hello,
    In material description , some characters such as µ when converted into upper case it will be 'M' in stead of 'µ' . This is in SAP ECC unicode . But it's ok in R/3.
    So in this case, Is there any solution for this problem ?
    Thanks

    MAKT-MAKTG : For upper case characters , When our client search for values when pressing F4 in material , If there's material description that contain 'u03BC', It will be displayed as 'M' in the text . This will happen in ECC 6 not in R/3 ( in R/3 two texts are the same) .
    The different behavior you're observing between what you call R/3 and ECC 6 is not due to the different releases, but based on the fact that one system is Unicode enabled and the other not. I suspect that you are most likely logging onto the system with a language that's linked to code page 1100 (in the non-Unicode release). Code page 1100 is similar to the Latin-1/ISO-8859-1 code page, which is designed to have most characters for western languages, but does not contain all Greek letters (SAP would most likely use code page 1700 if you set a greek locale).
    Again, it may sound silly, but you have to distinguish between the symbol µ (Unicode code point U+00B5) and the lower case greek letter u03BC (U03BC). SAP code page 1100 contains only the symbol µ (U00B5), which represents the prefix micro as for example in 1µm = 1 micro meter = 0.000001m. Neither the greek lower case letter u03BC (U+03BC) nor it's corresponding upper case letter exists in code page 1100.
    The Unicode standard defines the greek upper case letter u039C (U039C) as the upper case to use for both the symbol  µ (U00B5) and the lower case greek letter u03BC (U+03BC), see for example the Unicode mapping chart for Greek (so that's why you see a different behavior in ECC 6).
    I'm not sure why, but for some reason SAP found it worthwhile mentioning that they actually also convert the symbol  µ (U00B5) to u039C (U039C), though that essentially just means following Unicode standard. Anyhow, if you're interested in further details, check out OSS note 1078295 - Incomplete to upper cases in old code pages.

  • 3 Grades for 1 material

    Dear,
    I have 3 ranges which will decide Q1(Grade1) or Q2(Grade2) or Rejection
    For example:
    Material:1
    Thickness for Q1 will be 10mm to 13 mm
    and Q2 thickness will be 13mm to 15mm.
    and finaly rejection if not ok for above value.
    can you please help me how to map this scenario in SAP.
    Thanks,
    Shrithar

    Hi Shrithar,
    You may explore classed recording if you want to analyze how many samples fall under range of 13-15 mm and 10 -13 mm.
    1.     As per your comments we can derive permissible tolerance limits as 10mm to 15mm.
    2.     Create only one MIC as per above limits with classed recording as control indicator.
    3.     You can choose your own number of classes, Class width and class midpoint. (Letu2019s take these figures as 5, 1 and 12.5 respectively)
    4.     When the lot is created, you will be prompted to put your results as per the classes. There you put how many samples you observed between 10-13mm and likewise for next interval.
    5.     Give UD as Q1 if maximum samples fall under 10-13mm. Likewise Q2. (Your UD codes should be Q1, Q2 and Reject)
    What Sujit has suggested is also a better way to map this.
    1.     You create LENGTH as qualitative parameter.
    2.     Assign selected set to this MIC which contains 3 codes as Q1 (10-13mm), Q2 (13-15mm) and Reject with valuations A,A and R respectively.
    3.     Give UD.

  • Question PSE9 backup - unexpected error

    Following a recent Windows reinstall, several programs like PSE 9 were also lost. This was reinstalled with the help from Adobe customer support. My Album was successfully retrieved from my Backup.
    However trying a new Full backup I've had about 5 attempts aborting at 86% - 25.4gb due to an unexpected error. My original backup is 43.3 gb.
    The only difference I observed between this, new, dowloaded version of PSE9 and my previous version is that Elements and Organiser are running as two totally separate programs

      They have always been two separate applications; so that won‘t make any difference. It may help to repair and optimize your catalog in the Organizer.
    Click File à Catalog
    Highlight your catalog name and click the Repair button.
    If you get a message saying nothing to repair, click Repair Anyway.
    Repeat by highlighting your catalog and clicking the Optimize button.
    Then try another full backup.

  • Team shopping cart and Shopping on behalf

    Dear Experts,
    What is the difference you have observed between team shopping cart and Shopping on behalf?
    Do you observe differences other than the below ones:
    1. Team shopping cart can be taken over by any one in the team defined in the substitution of the creator in any stage (including even draft stage) so that the team members can enhance the shopping cart and take over it in the absence of the creator.
    However, 'Shopping on behalf' does not offer the same flexibility. In absence of the shopping cart creator, the original requestor (shop for) can just have receive or confirm the delivery in the shopping cart.
    Do you see any other differences other than the above ones?
    Regards,
    Ranjan

    Hello Ranjan
    Please find the answer below:
    In both team purchasing and shopping on behalf of other users, a person other than the requester is involved in processing the shopping cart. However, the two functions are used in different situations:
    If someone shops on behalf of another user, typically a single person works with the shopping cart from the start of the requisitioning process. For example, a purchasing assistant or secretary creates a shopping cart for a manager and follows the process through until the confirmation or invoice is created. Only the person on whose behalf the shopping cart is created can take over the shopping cart or the follow-on documents.
    In team purchasing, any user who is defined as a procurement substitute can take over the shopping cart. Within this process, several users can be involved and can take over the team shopping cart from each other. This can be useful, for example, in the following situations:
    An employee leaves the company, and the successor later takes over this person's responsibilities.
    An employee is sick, and a colleague takes over the shopping cart.
    A team of employees works in shifts, and a shopping cart that is time-critical must be processed by a colleague working in a different shift.

  • Why use narrow?

    One difference which I observed between RMI and RMI/IIop was teh use of narrow. My question is why to use narrow rather than directly casting an object to interface extending remote.

    One reason that I know of is that with JRMP you have both the client and the server in java while in IIOP the server might be in some other language. So the simplicity of readily casting objects in JRMP disappears in IIOP. In order to overcome this hinderance the static method narrow is used.

    Hi Gurus,
    I have a material with MAP and a stock of 20 Kg received on PO. Now I want to receive 30 kg on different po and it ask me to create Account determination for price different account.
    Material is having Handling Unit associated with.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Using transaction code OBYC , check if account assignment is done for the posting key "PRD" or not, in the client that you are running the transaction.. If  it is missing  , update with apprpriate G/L account for posting the price differences .You will be able to resolve this error.Because the G.l accounts fall under master data , probably you have to do the assignment in all the clients for respective valuation areas( it may be missing in one of the clients , where you are currently facing the error )
    ( How ever in valuatioon and account determination process , the Price difference account is posted if
    1) The material is valuated at Standard price and goods receipt is done at a different price - at the time of GR, subsequently at the time of Invoice verification.
    2) If price difference is observed between the GR and the Invoice  and if sufficient stocks are not available to post the value to stock account - in case materials are valuated at Moving average price.
    Since you are stating that the system is asking for Price Difference account at the time of GR - the materials must be valuated on Std price, please confirm if the material vlation is with MAP and even then its asking for PRD accounte determination. )
    Hope this information helps and I am looking for your reply also.

  • Problems with Update Record behavior

    I am sorry to ask this question again since I have not resolved the issue yet.
    When I am using the Dreamweaver Update Record behavior,  I am not able to get the form validation to work.  I implemented the form validation by inserting  onsubmit="return someFormValidation(this);" into the update form created by Dreamweaver.
    When I hit the submit button the JavaScript validation function is not even invoked.
    However when I use the same method for form validation with Insert Record behavior I have no problems.  Is this difference I am observing between the Insert and Update behaviors the way Dreamweaver supposed to work?  If yes how can I do my form validation during an Update Record?
    Note that the pages involved are all php pages, therefore we are talking about server side validation here.
    If anyone can help I will be grateful as I am really stuck...

    I am closing this even though I got no answers as the weird behaviour has disappeared....
