Observe & Control

I know the following has been discussed ad infinitum in these discussion pages but I'm at my wits end trying to solve this problem.
The story so far:
Small network consisting of PowerBook G4(10.4.6), PowerMac G4(10.4.8), iMac G5 (intel 10.4.7) and iBook G3 (10.4.6) and all connected through linksys wireless router - the PowerBook and iBook with wireless via airport and the PowerMac and iMac via ethernet.
All machines have ports 5900 and 3283 opened both by checking "Apple Remote Desktop" in the "Services" panel and additionally by manually opening them for both TCP and UDP connections. These two ports on the linksys have been forwarded to the PowerMac.
Using ARD 2.2 all communication with the machines using the PowerBook as admin was working just fine but after upgrading to ARD 3.0 (admin and client machines) Control and Observe functions were not working with a "Connection Failed Username" message. After days of trolling through support and discussion pages I decided to remove ARD 3 from all machines using Terminal and instructions found in the knowledge base and reinstall ARD 2 with the 2.2 update.
The same problem persisted with the newly installed 2.2 and so I decided to take the router out of the equation. I connected the PowerMac and the PowerBook via ethernet using a hub but the symptoms were exactly the same as previously.
I'm not too sure how to proceed and any thoughts or advice on the matter would be much appreciated.

Is the privilege setting for observe and control set in the ARD preferences on the problematic client?
If it's correctly set, try removing the ARD client using the instructions here and then reinstall ARD 2.2 using this installer. It says it's an "updater", but it will work anyway. Then update to the ARD 3.0 client and try again.
Hope this helps.

  • Mac OS X 10.7.4 ARD Issues When Observing/Controlling Computers with Display Mirroring/Different Resolutions

As if Macs in an enterprise environment could be more difficult to manage, now since our upgrade to OS X 10.7.(4) I have lost the ability to remotely control numerous Macs in our organization. The issue occurs when attempting to control a Mac running OS X 10.7.(4) that has their Display mirrored and the resolution does not match on both displays. What happens is that I can see the remote screen however it does not fill the entire Observe/Control window. Instead, the remote screen takes up about 50% of the window, the rest is black but sometimes will display a mirror image of the remote screen in the black area. What?! Yeah, I've attached a screenshot because this is ridiculous. The real problem is that I cannot control the computer when it has reached this state, the mouse no longer functions properly, it is not clicking where I place the mouse, etc. I have made sure that I have all updates including ARD Client/Server updates. I even tried VNC but as I have come to find out that is a whole other issue (doesn't work, sends me to the login screen, etc).
    So here's what I need:
    - A patch that is going to fix this issue
    - A script to run that is going to change the remote screen resolution (I still have the ability to run remote scripts, etc. simply not Observe/Control)
    Ideas?
    <Image Edited by Host>

I found a way to work around this issue.  Not a fix but a work around.
This is little application some one wrote to toggle mirroring on and off.
    Mirror Displays
If you put this application in the client computer's /Aplications folder
you can use ARD or SSH to run the app and switch modes.
The problem only occurs for me when a client is set to mirror dissimilar displays with different aspect ratios.
I am only seeing this in Lion 10.7.4 and 10.7.5
    Hope it helps someone....

  • Is there a way to observe/control iOS devices like ARD for desktops/laptops?

For desktops/laptops I can use Apple Remote Desktop to monitor (and control) devices remotely. This is very useful for supporting users.
I don't think there is such a thing for iOS devices, right? I do not mean VNC on an iOS device to observe/control a PC, but the other way around: use a PC to observe / control an iOS device remotely.

I have not heard of a way either.

  • Apple Remote Desktop CANNOT observe/control/curtain 30" Cinema Display

Apple Remote Desktop CANNOT observe/control/curtain 30" Cinema Display. All my other pc's (G4, G3, titanium, 17" Powerbooks and Macbooks) can be observed, using identical settings. i figured out that it may be the graphics card while trying to Microsoft Remote Desktop Connect to the Macbook running XP, the system crashed due to the (well known as really bad) ATI mobility XP drivers provided by bootcamp. So i quess the problem is the dual link in my G5 running on the 30". All the other remote desktop commands run fully ok. i just cannot get visual feed.
    Any thoughts??
    Thank you all in advance
    Dual G5, Dual G4, G3, 15" titanium, 17" Powerbook, 17" Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I've had this problem, too, recently. I have two G5s running 30" displays, I'll describe my situation - it may come down to your video card.
When I try to connect to one of the G5/30" on my network (a PowerMac 7,2, 512MB, running a GeForce6800 Ultra), it sporadically gives me the same non-visual problem you're having. But every now and then, I can connect, and can't figure out why. A lot of times in the ARD multi-observe window, it reports that this machine is maxing out the memory (98.7%, putting it in the red)
However, when I try to connect to another G5/30" on the network (a PowerMac 7,3, 512MB running an ATI Radeon 800 XT), I DO get a visual.
Maybe others know of known deficiencies in ARD/NVidia connections? Or maybe it has to do with the paltry RAM in the machine?

  • Can transfer files to remote Intel Mac but can't observe, control etc. Help

There are five Macs, 3 are PPC and 2 Intel.
All computers are running 10.4.8 and have vers. 3.1 of ARD
I can add them all to "all computers". I can observe-control all the PPC's, no problem with them.
The Intels (both MacMini's) will accept my login name and password, allow me to restart them, copy files to them BUT NOT allow me to observe-control them.
There is no firewall on their end except for the built-in Apple software one.
I thought I configured each of the computers identically.
    I have a G5 tower.
    Any ideas?

  • Users turning off observe/control?

I think I may hit the ceiling in a few minutes. I've been posting how I haven't been able to connect to any remote clients that I've upgraded to 3.1 or higher. However, all of a sudden, I'm able to connect to one machine that has 3.2.1 on it. I was shipped one of the machines from a user having problems, and lo and behold, observe/control was turned off!!!!!!
Is there a way to remotely turn that on? If this is the case and I've been yelling about Apple this whole time and wasted about 2 months, I'm going to be slightly angry.....

If you can send a UNIX command successfully or remotely login to the system via Terminal, you should be able to turn Observe and Control on via the kickstart command:

  • Black screens when observing controlling outside LAN

My Apple tech guy set up a VPN through our Cisco router and he uses Apple Remote Desktop to flawlessly hop into our system and control/observe.
I need the same abilities so I purchased ARD 3.2, and I have a VPN client configured by the tech guy (so it should work).
From within our LAN I can do everything I want to, but outside the LAN using the VPN client, I cannot observe or control, all I see is a black screen, I can message and I have been told I can move the mouse around, but I get no video.
I have tried from three different broadband connections at all screen qualities.
    Am I missing something?

I had recently begun to have the same problem and have discovered a solution. Turn off jumbo frames.
I had recently upgraded my home network to gigabit and added a NAS. To optimize my transfer speeds I had set my network speed to 1000-full duplex with jumbo frames. Awesome transfer speeds (~38MB/sec.) but only black screens in ARD when controlling from outside my LAN.
So, now I have a script that I can SSH into my box at home and use to change network locations to one that does not use jumbo frames.

  • Problem with video blinking/flashing when Observing/Controling

I have noticed recently that whenever I Observe or Control an Aluminum iMac, the video blinks/flashes which obviously is very annoying. Any other Mac this does not occur. Any ideas what might be happening?
    Thanks

I just discovered turning off "Fit to Screen" gets rid of the flashing or blinking display issue when observing or controlling another Mac. Weird...

  • Observing / Controling WITHOUT asking for Client permission?

I have ARD admin on my laptop and ARD activated on Client comptuers.
I click on a client on my list.
Then I click on OBSERVE (or Control).
And I get the "Authorization Failed".
Also many of the ARD active Clients read "Access Denied" in the Current Status Column....
I am an ARD newbie...please help..
Youc an email me directly as well; [email protected]

Make sure you're using the user name and password of a user that's set up on the client for the appropriate ARD access (in the Sharing -> Remote Desktop -> Account Privileges) when you add the client to the ARD computer list.

  • Can not control / observe when no user logged in

Been fighting this for weeks. Searched the forum but found no relief.
Using ARD 3.2 we can control / observe from our office to several workstations both in our same building and in other offices around the country. On all but one we can control / observe regardless of whether or not a user is logged in. On those, when a user is not logged in, we see the workstations' login window. We can login, etc. On only one machine, which is running 10.4.11, we can control / observe ONLY when a user is logged into it. If no user is logged in we get an "unable to connect" from ARD. Call someone in that office, ask them to login, and immediately we can control / observe that workstation. We highly doubt a port forwarding / router / firewall issue since if it were, we suspect that we'd never be able to observe / control. It appears as though ARD ON THE WORKSTATION is getting disabled at user log out... BUT ONLY ON THIS ONE WORKSTATION! Any ideas, folks? Your help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    BB

Silly me! This one workstation connects via wireless connection, only. We had set, "Disconnect from wireless networks when I log out" in the wireless network's connection settings. All is well now.
    Thank you

  • Can you force ARD to ask permission before control/observing *AND* still be able to push updates/patches?

Is there a way to force ARD to ask permission before observing/controling a computer AND still be able to push updates/patches to the computer?
I know we can't be the only ones who have this dilemma so I'm hoping someone has a solution.
    ARD version 3.
OS 10.6.8 (ARD machine) and 10.6-10.7 client Macs
Each remotely monitored computer has an admin account that ARD uses to inventory and update the machines. Let's call it ADMIN. Of course each computer also has a local (non-admin) account let's call USER.
When USER is logged in, we'd like ARD to always ask permission before observing and/or controlling the computer. We found we can replicate this by removing the ADMIN login and password from the info tab of the computer in question as well as turning on the 'Any guest may request permission' setting. Unfortunately we found this also removes the ability of ARD to start a chat session with the computer - even with the chat option checked on in ARD settings (system preferences). To push updates/patches we have to put the ADMIN account information back into computer info tab.
Basically it boils down to giving the end user the privacy they would like (not being viewed without warning) while they're logged in vs. allowing the IT department to update the computers when necessary.
With the ADMIN login and password entered into the computer's info tab we're able to observe/control without warning. We changed the client settings for that computer via ARD to always request permission but this didn't work while the ADMIN login and password were still entered in the info tab. Once we removed the information we were prompted to ask permission but that's because we were essentially an unknown guest.
It appears to be an either/or situation right now. Either you give the user privacy and always ask permission or you give the IT department the rights to observe a machine and push updates. Because once we put the ADMIN information back into the info tab, we can observe without permission again.
When USER is logged in, always ask permission to control/observe. But still be able to push updates. If ADMIN is logged in or no one is logged in, don't ask to control/observe.
Has anyone found a workable solution for this question?

You can take a look at this website and it will give you the command to run that will control the Observe and Control options for the access mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370
    The command is:
    $
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -configure -users "THIS IS WHERE YOU PUT THE USERS YOU WANT TO HAVE ACCESS" -access -on -privs -ControlObserve -ObserveOnly -TextMessages

  • 3.2 Admin Update breaks Tasks/Msgs, but not Control/Observe?

I'm having the same problem. Up until I updated my admin to 3.2, I used to be able to install packages on our machines locally. Talk about a time saver...
Now I can observe/control them all, but if I try to install a package, it claims that the "Client software is not active"... but if I double click on that Failed line in my Installed Packages window, sure enough I gain control of the machine right away.
I'm on 10.4.11, the clients are 10.4.9. I've tried manually installing the 3.2.1 update on a machine and retrying, no luck. I then updated one of the client machines to 10.4.11. Didn't help. But I'm noticing that my ARD 3.2 Admin reads "Screen Sharing Available" for just about all machines. And the Mac OS Version and ARD columns are NOT updating on the machine I've updated to 10.4.11 and 3.2.1.
I can't seem to do any other functions either (Copy, Send Message, etc), though Observe/Control work fine. I've also tried trashing com.apple.RemoteManagement.plist on the client machine. No help.
It seems that the status reporting of the client to the server is what seems to be off. If I manually initiate a connection, it will attempt to observe/control and work because the service is indeed working. But polling the clients, asking their status is what seems to be returned wrong...
    Any fixes for this?

Sadly, I didn't actually do anything. I was just on a different wireless router in our building. I still have the same problems using the Airport Extreme in that section of the building.
My best guess is that the 3.2 Admin update may have moved status monitoring to a different port or uses a different method of communication within TCP/IP that 'breaks' it on certain router configurations.

  • Ask for explicit permissionen to observe and control a client

According to the German Law, I need an explicit permission by the users in order to observe/control their screen.
Which means that before I do it, a form should appear to the user asking for acceptance of screen share
(Example: Do you accept to share the your screen? YES - NO).
Without this feature which automatically ask to the user his/her permission, any screensharing software is for me useless.

Sorry, but that's not a feature of ARD unless you connect to the client as a guest rather than an authorized administrator, in which case most functions of ARD don't work.
    Regards.

  • Cant Observe nor Control all else OK

We are 2 mac users both have ARD V3.1 on our machines both set up correctly (we think), however I (G5 tower) can observe & control and he (imac G5) cannot.Which router/machine his or mine is likely to be the culprit

Answered my own question I hadn't set a firewall rule in my router to allow for incoming traffic on the ports mentioned.

  • How to control a MacBook Pro remotely with ARD?

I have ARD set up and installed, but I'm not sure how to set up a connection with the MBP so I can control and observe the MBP with ARD.
Looking for a easy tutorial for a beginner in ARD.

    Hi apple is awesome,
Just to check, you have one computer, with ARD installed, and your trying to use that computer to control your "BMP"?
    If so:
On your BMP, you would want to setup sharing:
go to the white menu bar at the top of the screen
    click on the Apple Menu
    chose "System Preferences..."
when System Preferences opens, click the "Show All" button
    click on the "Sharing" icon
if the lock in the bottom left corner of the window is locked, then click on it to unlock sharing
At the top of the window there will be a field labeled "Computer Name:" make sure your computer has a name you'll recognize.
    Check "Remote Management"
Click on the words "Remote Management
If "Allow Access for:" is set to "All Users", Click the "Options.." button
If "Allow Access for:" is set to "Only These Users:" then:
if the user you wish to connect as is not on the "Only These Users:" list, click on the "+" button
from the list of Users that pops up, select the user you wish to login with.
    click the "Select Button"
you should be prompted with a list of actions you can allow to be remotely accessed by ARD.
Check: Observe, Control, Show when being Observed, Generate Reports, Open and Quit Applications, Change Settings, Delete And Replace items, Start text chat or send Messages, Restart and Shutdown, Copy Items.
    Click the "OK" Button
    Cose System Preferences
Your BMP should now be ready to be remotely connected to. (assuming the firewall on the BMP is off, and no other program like little snitch, or internet barrier is running)
    To connect to your BMP:
On your ARD computer, open Apple Remote Desktop
If you look on the left hand side of In Apple Remote Desktop there will be a column, the second item on the column listed Should be "Scanner" click on it
Make sure scanner is set to "bonjour"
from the list, on the right side of ARD you should see you BMP listed with what ever name you set in sharing.
click on it, to select the computer
click on the control screen icon from the tool bar.
you will be prompted for the user name and password to use to connect to the computer.
    Good Luck!
