Observing and Controlling Outside My Local Network

I am trying to observe and control my other computer at work from my house using ARD 3. I have done a port scan using the Network Utility program in Macintosh HD>Applications>Utilities>Network Utility. It said that the ports that were open on my network at work were TCP ports 21 and 443. I did the same thing using the network address at home. The ports it said were open at home were TCP ports 1720 and 5060. I also connected to my Linksys router at home and forwarded those 4 ports. I then went back to ARD and added my office IP address and the correct user name and password. Once I did that, it added the computer just fine. I saw that it told me what the current user, application, and status was of that computer. I clicked on control and the control window did open. The only issue is, the control window is black. I HAVE changed the display settings on my monitor at work to never turn off. I'll change it back once I get this issue fixed. Does anyone know why the control window is black when I click on control?

you will need to forward ports 5900 , 5988 and 3283 at the remote router to the desired remote computer. No port forwarding should be required at your local router.

You need Lion and latest firmware on the TC..
Were you hoping to use the ipad/iphone?? That maybe possible but I am not sure how.
You cannot use windows without opening SMB to some strange port and this is going to mess with security.. you also need a static ip address from your ISP.. most private net users do not have this.
You can do it via vpn.. you will need to buy a vpn router and bridge the TC to it.
Just google remote access time capsule.. there are a zillion posts about it.

Which ports do I open so QT Broadcast is seen from outside a local network?

I need some help with proper port settings using QT Broadcaster Version 1.5 (113) from mac to mac (running X.4.5 on all systems). I am able to send a Live QT Broadcast to my local network no problem but the broadcast is not seen from outside of my own local Network.
I’m assuming I must first address port settings on my cable modem and / or a Belkin gateway 4 port router.
The Broadcast works fine on all 4 of my macs connected via ethernet to a Belkin 4 port router which in turn is connected to a Toshiba PCX2500 cable modem.
I’m guessing the Toshiba modem is the problem and not the Belkin router. I say this because when I remove the router completely my Broadcast is still not seen by anyone from the outside. This leads me to believe that the cable modem may be the culprit. But then again I’m at a loss to know which ports to open up so others on the internet can also view my broadcast. Please note I do not wish to broadcast to more than one person at a time. Hence no need for QTSS or DSS.
To the best of my knowledge QT Broadcaster in itself should suffice from one mac to another w/o the need for a server. Is this correct? If not, I do have Darwin loaded to another separate mac system in the event I must first use it to reflect this braodcast.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated & please pardon my second post on the same subject / QT Broadcaster which I have slighly reworded in hope of getting some help.

Unable to Access Web Site (with same name) outside of Local Network

Hi everyone,
I have my web site (and some other services) hosted outside of my network by my hosting provider, but handle all other items using OS X Server on my network (i.e. Wiki and so forth).
The problem is now that I am unable to access my website at www.mydomain.com from within the network. I have external DNS set up for www.mydomain.com to point to my website, while mydomain.com points to my OS X Server (static IP address). Internally in OS X Server's DNS settings this used to work when I had www.mydomain.com resolving to the IP address of my web host, in addition to the default domain settings that OS X had set up. For some reason this is no longer working, and I am unable to figure out why.
Using latest version of OS X Server 3.0.2.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Update: this ended up being a redirect issue on the web host. I added another subdomain that was hosted externally, and it worked fine. For some reason my web host is redirecting www.mydomain.com to domain.com.

I am in Texas and cannot get to that site either. Do you know for sure the site is up and working? It could just be down (for days, a site I support was down for almost 4 full days a few weeks ago due to a virus problem).
This may (again, may) be your problem: I see you have a173.48.x.x (you really should x-out the last two octets of your IP address for privacy reasons), I am on a 173.74.x.x address; I know some people have had problems with getting to some sites now that they have a 173.x.x.x address. I think Verizon obtained addresses in that range and some of the addresses apparently previously belonged to spammers or some malicious folks.Some sites (web sites, intermeidate routers, etc.) blocked those addresses, and may not have updated their filters to remove the block on those addresses because they don't know that Verizon now owns them. If this is the problem, eventually those filters will get updated and you will be able to access the site, but this could be a fairly long time.
If you know how to contact that site I suggest you email them about the problem. You can also try turning off your router overnight and when you turn it back on the next day you may find that you have a different address (one that doesn't start with 173) that will allow you to get to the site.
I don't think there is much Verizon can do to help, it is not their site that is blocking your address (at least I don't think it is).

IPad Air and streaming video from local network

Hello everyone! I'm a new member and a new Apple device user.
I come from Android and honestly my experience wasn't negative or bad, but I was kind of sick of the look and feel of Android. I decided therefore to try something new, fresh and so well spoken of: the iPad Air (16 GB WiFi only model).
However this is not a review or anything so let me skip directly to the issue: streaming video on a local network.
In Android this is a basic thing, you can do it in several ways with several app over different networks (SMB, FTP, SFTP, DLNA (UPNP), etc.). The first thing I did is to try the FTP streaming with VLC: suffice to say that after a second it closes itself (the video, not the app), and this happens with all the videos. I've been searching for a working alternative but so far I found only paid apps. I cannot pay for something I'm not completely sure it is going to work. Free alternatives of paid apps are extremely limited (i.e: no audio or even no network streaming).
What I need to know is this: is it possible on the iPad Air to stream video from a local network (preferably SMB and FTP) without any sort of conversion or transcoding? What I would like to stream are video in 720p or 1080p, sometimes even 15 Gb Blurays. Files are either in mkv or mp4 format. I also always use subtitles.
Please let me know if this is possible.

you need to get apps from app store which does upnp and the likes there are plenty
you can do anything the app support but you can't use the normal build in movie player to play from smb or ftp
but search app store there are likely support for at least smb not sure about ftp it's a pretty old std which would result in transferring the whole file rather then streaming
start by looking for vlc in app store and then go on to upnp and smb use search

Never used airport and cannot connect to local network

i have an imac G5 and I have neverused the airport feature and am now at a location which has one and I can grab the local network name from the pulldown menu, and it asks for the WEP password, and I give it, and then I get a message that says "error connecting to network" or something like that. I tried moving the aiport to the top of the list and unchecking the other options but still to no avail.
help??

The basic problem with WEP, other than it's no longer considered secure, is that it comes in a variety of "flavors" when it comes to accessing it with a password: password/passphrase, 40/128-ASCII key, or 40/128-bit hex key. In a mixed environment, it's best to use 128-bit hex, which would be a 26 hex character key. The WiFi you're trying to connect to may not be set up this way. What did the host for this WiFi tell you the WEP type is?

Can't access IMAP outside of local network

Hi all,
Let me start by saying I'm a novice, so I apologize in advance if this message is missing any important details.
I am running OSX Server 10.4, which I use as my mail server. From within my local network (192.168.0.X) all of my mail services work as expected: POP, SMTP, IMAP, SquirrelMail etc.
However, if I try to access my mail from an external network, I can't connect with IMAP. But the weird thing is that everything else still works: POP, SMTP, SquirrelMail etc, so I'm just wondering if there is some particular setting somewhere that stops IMAP from accepting outside connections?
If you need more info about my config, please just ask.

Mac os x server profilemanager is not available outside the local network

Hi,
I have some trouble using the profilemanager. Planed is to install the server for configuring and supporting our iPhone user
Its a mac mini with OS X Server installed. I've just activated the Websites, OpenDirectory and Profilemanager service. I added the Server to our AD and I'am able to choose the User to allow them to log on to the profilmanager. No problems so far.
But then I added a port forwarding to our firewall with this ports -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5302?viewlocale=de_DE to the server.
Then I logged on to a external client pc and opened the url forwarded to our ip. The first website with the server logo I got. But if i try to open a subfolder like /profilemanager I get only a white screen without any content. Just a title "Admin" is shown in the browser tab.
Then I tried it with a local client. This client located in the same IP range can open the subfolders without any problems.
Whats the problem here? Just a parameter in the server config that tells him to deny connections from external?

Did you set up your ftp clients outside your LAN to use passive FTP.
Active FTP uses a control channel on port 21 and a data channel which is on a non predictive port.
This does not work behind a NAT Router.

Streaming flash media server to the world and not just your local network

hello, i have downloaded and installed flashe media server.....but i have som problems which are: i am on a network which is connected to the internet and i was able to get the ip of my pc using the comand prompt (i.e typing ...ipconfig/all....in the comand prompt window) ...i used this ip in my flash media encoder in place of "localhost" in the fms url, and i was able 2 connect fine ,i the copied my fms url to the osmf player and i generated my html code and put it in my webpage and everything did work fine, but the proble is that only the people who are on thesame network with me were able to view the video on the webpage wereas people in other countries could not view the video....... so please how can i be able to make my video acessable to the whole world ,because i work in a television company and they have asked me to undertake the task to stream thier broadcast online to the whole world........please i would like u to put me through the right things to do because have been having sleepless night on flash media server.....would be expecting a reply from anyone who can help me as quick as possible. thanks

Is the server that you have created behind some NAT, etc?
If you are using an IP of the form 10.x.x.x or 172.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x then these are private IPv4 address spaces and not public IPs(which is unique), and you wont be able access them from outside.

The scenario is, our company wants to start hosting their own emails and not through an ISP. I somehow managed to install and configure MS Exchange server 2010, we are able to send and receive mails but only when we are connected to our company network.
Is there something i have missed?

Ok, I was able to use this software: http://www.codewave.de/products/mytunesrss/ from everywhere before I bought the Airport Extreme, how can I do it again, I Mean Locally works fine, but when I try with the server address that it gaves me I can't now. Why? and How can I do it again? I mean the IP number is something like this http://97.10x.xx.xx:8888 but when I try it it says it can't make the connection. How can I change name and password of my local network

I have just changed to the new AirPort Time Capsule. In setting up teh network and have unsed new names and now some of the HW is not working correct. How can I change name and change the passwords

Use Airport Utility and change them in the same way you set them up in the first place.

Ask for explicit permissionen to observe and control a client

According to the German Law, I need an explicit permission by the users in order to observe/control their screen.
Which means that before I do it, a form should appear to the user asking for acceptance of screen share
(Example: Do you accept to share the your screen? YES - NO).
Without this feature which automatically ask to the user his/her permission, any screensharing software is for me useless.

Sorry, but that's not a feature of ARD unless you connect to the client as a guest rather than an authorized administrator, in which case most functions of ARD don't work.

Granted observation and control

i work in a contemporary art academy where we got twelve macs that i administer. the machines are the property of the institution, but the students accounts and their research are considered private.
do any of you beleive that apple will ever be likely to add a function that a user would have to accept the admin to log on for screen sharing or control?
or could this be achieved some other way?

If you connect as a guest, there is a setting to allow the user to have to grant permission to control the screen. But this does not work when the admins can connect as an authorized user, and I know of no way to make that happen.
Whether or not Apple plans to add this as a feature in some future version of ARD, none of us here can say. All I can say is that ARD is clearly not a high priority product at Apple. If you need the ability to take control of a system but your school's policy is such that the user's permission is required, ARD is probably not the product for you. Timbuktu is the only only Mac remote control product I know that allows the user to accept or deny a connection from an authorized user, though there may be others.
