Obsolete MAC OS Versions Support ?
Dear all,
Does anyone know which version have been obsolete (No Support/No patches depliver) officially ?
Thanks a lot !
Jonathan
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I would add that even 10.3.8 and earlier no longer get security patches:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61798
Good security practices as explained in my FAQ:
http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html#SECURITY
Of course Mac OS 9 being as old as it is, would be an unlikely target for attack by hackers, and more unlikely than Mac OS X, even though Mac OS X's own security is better. Whether Mac OS X will ever become truly vulnerable though is a matter of much debate. I for one doubt it.
Apple has not though removed the updates for Mac OS 9. You can get them on this page:

want to use icloud on my macbook and cant because I am using OSX10.6.8 - I want to upgrade this but I cant upgrade to mountain lion as my mac does not support this - cannot find a way to go to Version 10.7.4 which i understand supports icloud - help to do this please
If you purchased Lion for your iMac, just log into the Mac App Store from your MacBook using the Apple ID under which you purchased Lion and go to the Purchases page. You will be able to download and install Lion there.
searching the internet i found a link to upgrtade to 10.7
The only place you get get Lion is from the Mac App Store. If you found some other site, that was an illegal copy and almost certainly tied to someone else's Apple ID and hence unusable by you. If the link was just to the Mac App Store, see above.
As to the problem with synchronization to iCloud, that's not a 10.6 question, so I'd suggest you take up that specific issue in either the Lion or iCloud forums, providing full details, and someone there can probably help you sort things out.

I need to know what version of iOS my mac from 2008 supports
hello
I am trying to update my iOS, the one I have is snow leopard on my macbook, but I dont know if theres a newer one that may mac can supportRegarding supported iOS device systems and their relationship
to Mac OS X systems, compatibilities, that is another topic of
equal interest if you are seeking to match an older iDevice with
an OS X. There are several different articles & ASC discussions
that cover some of these secondary topics, to some degree.
iOS 6 and above, and Mac OS X 10.5.x
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6021
If you have an older iDevice (iPhone, iPad, etc) product & it gets
an iOS upgrade to a later version, that cannot be downgraded to
an earler version; so that is something to consider should you
have an older device and need to connect it through a newer Mac
than you own, since it may need an iOS upgrade to work with a
the newer computer, yet may not connect to an older vintage one
that you may have at home, vs one at work or school.
So in another perspective, your question has a different meaning.
Perhaps it may help to keep that in mind, w/ Mac OS X upgrade
and how it may relate to an iOS product compatibility. Especially
if you've more than one OS X version you'd use an iDevice with.
This is how, in part, an iOS item can become orphaned to an OS X.
That may be a good thing if your old Mac can't go further ahead.
Good luck & happy computing! -
Someone who can say how to get Adpbe flash player version 11.2.202.197 to work together with Lion on mac mini. Support from Apple can obviously not help the problem and do not care if it works
Adobe flash player version 11.2.202.197 is for Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Vista 64 / Windows 7 64
Adobe Flash Player version 11.1.102.55 is the current version for Snow Leopard and Lion.

I can't install Rosetta Stone onto my new Mac OSX (version 10.7.5)
Any suggestions?
The message says "can't open application because Power PC applications are no longer supported."
Thanks!Thank you... spoke to Rosetta Stone and they said the same thing, and the give a nice discount when upgrading.
Normally 5 levels of a language run about $479. When upgrading, you can get the same 5 levels for $199.
Fewer levels costs even less. -
I have an old mac and wish to install an iphoto program. The app store only offers me the latest version of iphoto, but I think the mac can only support iphoto 5. Any suggestions on where I can get iphoto 5?
Do you have the disks that came with the old Mac? If you do you can install the iApps from one of those disks.
Otherwise, what Mac model do you have? Go the the ➙ About This Mac menu and then click on More Information. In the System Information under Hardware you'll find Model Name. What is the model? I'tll be something like Macbook 5,2.

MAC BOOK PRO 15 - Does this version support Audio 5.1
Hello,
My MBP 15inch is the 1st generation with the INTEL CORE 2 DUO chip.
Here's my Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro 15", Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2, Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo, Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz, Number Of Processors: 1, Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB, Memory: 3 GB, Bus Speed: 667 MHz, Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B07, SMC Version: 1.12f5
I am looking to play store bought DVD's on the MBP but have the video and audio go through my home theater setup..
The Song Bravia is connected via the DVI to HDMI cable....Picture works and looks ok.
I have the mini jack to optical cable into my H&K AVR. Sound comes out, but not in 5.1.
The DVD, IRONMAN and others are set up to play 5.1 via Apple' s DVD player - but the receiver doesn't recognize the signal as 5.1. Only PCM Stereo....I have to force it in to PRO LOGIC, which is not true 5.1.
Does this Mac Book Pro support 5.1?
THanks
ArtHi
Thanks for the reply. It seems I was able to get Apple's DVD program and VLC to play in 5.1. I did more digging and found some forums that had a step by step to get 5.1 to be activated.
I used the digital mini-cable to toslink cable from Monster, but then had to tell DVD or VLC that my output can play the audio from a DVD on digital audio equipment, such as a home theater system that plays 5.1 audio. I went in preference of both programs, while the DVD was NOT playing and was able to select digital output. Once I did this and played the DVD - the H&K receiver changed from PROLOGIC to Digital Dolby 5.1 on the display and the sound was true 5.1 out of the speakers.
Not sure why APPLE doesn't have this documented anywhere; although once I knew where to look I found it in the HELP SECTION of DVD program.
Thanks

Howdy.
I've just purchased a new iPhone 4, but my Mac's version of iTunes won't support it. I need to upgrade iTunes to the latest version. But, alas, when I downloaded it, my Mac won't support it. My Mac's details are; 10.4.11 Processor Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5. I need to get up to 10.5.
Can I download the higher operating system? If so where from? Or must I buy it from the shops?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
MB427Z/A Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
MB576Z/A Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
The DVD should look like this
Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

Some MacBook Pro versions cannot be upgraded past 10.6.8; others are maxed out at 10.7.5. newer models can go all the way to 10.10. So it is important to know exactly what version you have--there may be close to 40 variants produced since the MB made its debut in 2006.
You can safely give us a snapshot of your model and its current config that will allow us to deternmmine your model and its upgrade potential, plus show it you have any software that may impede any upgrades. Please download and install this free utility:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration in Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data.
Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.
Remember that, on leaving OS10.6.8, you lose the ability to run older softare written for older PowerPC Macs (yours in Intel-based). Programs such as Office 2004 will no longer work (min of Office 2008 needed to work on newer OS versions), and AppleWorks will stop working completely -
I want to develop a Microsoft Office Word Add-In for Mac Users. I would like to know if we create it using Visual Studios in windows will it be compatible with the Mac version of office or is there a whole another way to develop for Mac?
Please provide links so that I could follow some guidelines. The http://msdn.microsoft.com/site
doesn't exactly speak of the platform compatibility of the Add-In.
Thank You very Much in Advance.Office:Mac 2011 only supports add-ins that were developed in VBA. Office:Mac 2008 does not support add-ins at all. A
new version of Office:Mac is slated for release in 2015, there have been no announcements as of this writing (December 2014) whether Microsoft will support additional methods of developing add-ins in the new version of Office:Mac.
For further information, check out
Getting Started with VBA in Office for Mac 2011 from the Office:Mac 2011 help files. You might find more assistance in developing Office:Mac add-ins in the
Office:Mac help forums hosted by Microsoft. -
I have Microsoft Word for Mac 2011, version 14.3.1. When I try to open a document, an error occurs, says file type is "blocked from opening in this version." This was NOT immediately after a version update. Any ideas? Thank you.
Take a look here:

If that doesn't help, I'd suggest you take up the question in Microsoft's own forums or with Microsoft support.

Problems with Mail after upgrading to MAC OS10 version 10.6.8
I upgraded to MAC OS10 version 10.6.8 about ten days ago, and have since had lots of problems with mail. Since I upgraded, I have downloaded several software updates, including one for improving the general softeware system of Leopard. Since this morning, I no longer have the Mail icon in the dock and when I try to open it in Applications a window comes up saying:
'You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X. You have Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085). It can't be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549)
Can I download a version that I can use with this Mac, and can anybody give me the site where I can find this. I have tried without successYou should consider downloading the 10.6.8 combo updater and applying it again.

Pondini has a great page about upgrading.

I bought a Power Mac G4 (version=3.3) second hand from my company. It is running Mac OS 10.2.8 and Microsoft Office X. I wish to connect it to my BT broadband hub. However, it does not appear to have an AirPort card and even if it did I was told that the BT hub mainly works with microsoft rather than apple products. Can anyone advise me how I can connect and what products I need to buy?
Many thanksJohn Galt wrote:
These are readily available on eBay etc. and are not expensive.
See http://www.airportcardsdirect.com/ these cards are cheap and not sold via DOA-Bay.
John Galt wrote:
The PowerMac3,3 uses the original AirPort 802.11b card. It may also need a card adapter to enable it to mate with the internal connections - I'd have to check on that.
Not true. Those adaptors were intended for the iMac G3 (long outdated) and only the iMac G3. All G4 machines just take AP Cards the way they are.
John Galt wrote:
You should also look into upgrading it to OS X "Tiger" but make sure you get the original retail install CD. It will be black with a large "X". Grey discs are machine specific and will not work.
Actually I HIGHLY recommend upgrading to OS X Leopard. Tiger is no longer supported by hardly anybody (Apple, Adobe, etc) and Leopard is still the minimum for most things nowadays. If you want more life out of this Mac, then I would highly recommend installing Leopard. And as mentioned above you NEED a Retail DVD. (The Leopard DVD has a little Purple in the Center of the DVD and a BLACK X in the center. -
