Obsolete Shortcut Files

I can't help but notice that every time new updates come up for not only iTunes but other Apple-based programs as well, and I download them, all the shortcuts I originally had for them break and I have to replace them with the new shortcut file. Does the program itself get named or located slightly different every time there is an update?

I have the same problem, cab shortcut installs be prevented?

Saving plain text on a mac (Keyboard shortcuts file)

Hi there perhaps some mac users can help me...
I am manually editing the keyboard shortcuts file in TEXT edit on a mac (Im a pc user). I open the file as plain text all the rich text stuff turned off.
(Looked up how to do this.)
I edit one of the shortcuts, no unusual characters etc.
When I restart CC, it gives an error and shows squiggley characters at that line as the problem.
On a pc I just edit and save as plain text and there are no issues...
What am I doing wrong on a mac in Text edit ?

The issue you are encountering might be related to how TextEdit handles line endings? Not sure, but have you tried using the KeyedUp script to edit shortcuts? I used it for CC and it seems to be working fine.

I have figured that part out myself though, because if you
open a notepade.exe and drop in a mylink.url it is very simple to
see the path and grab it with a string manipulation with air. but
if you drag a shortcut.lnk into notepad it is very different and
looks alot more cryptic.
I was hoping there was a method for getting the target file
from a shortcut. even if I try to use:
NativeApplication.nativeApplication.getDefaultApplication("lnk")
there is no default application either

I am in a middle of a new file server implementation and have come across a problem where the items on the old file server has been archived and moved to another server and in place a shortcut is left at the original location. The current target of those
shortcut is going to be changed and thus I need to change the Target destination on those various shortcuts files. I am new to powershell and will really appreciate if someone can assist me with a powershell script for the below steps:
To find all shortcut files (Excel, word, powerpoint and other types) whose current target destination is \\abcserver\z\abcpath
Change the Target destination to \\xyzserver\z\abcpath on the shortcut file and apply the change.
Effectively only change shortcut files whose current target begins with "\\abcserver\" and change to "\\xyzserver\"
Search for the next shortcut and continue changing it.

Windows 7 Offline files behaviour - automatically making 'shortcutted' files available

I am a sysadmin with a few Windows 7 Professional machines in our network.
The current setup for our users is folder-redirection, with offline files enabled for users with laptops (some of which are said Win7 users).
This works fine, just, any shortcut files that are in the users profile (that are made available offline) make the target of the shortcut available offline aswell. Though I see the benefit of this, it is not a behaviour we want.
For example if user 'dave' has a shortcut on \\server1\users\dave\desktop, that points to \\server2\files\shortcut_target.doc (i.e. a directory we don't want to have offline file behaviour with) - it will make both files available offline.
I'm positive it is related to shortcuts, as the files are always shortcutted somewhere in the users profile and the majority of these files come from word's recent documents folder, and other similar folders for different program.
If theres anyway to change this behaviour please let me know, even if it is just a registry edit.

Based on my knowledge, Windows only synchronous the shortcut in this offline folder. What do you mean “it will make both files available offline.”
For further research, I suggest you may enable sync log and try to repro this problem. Then move to Event Viewer -> Applications and Service Logs ->
Microsoft -> Windows -> OfflineFiles, right click SyncLog and chose “Save all event as…” to export these event log. Here is my e-mail:

The channels are listed under the following hierarchy in the left-most pane of the viewer,

List Folder does not find WIndows shortcut files

Hello,
Why doesn't the "List Folder" vi find the Windows shorcut files? The WIndows short files have a extension of "*.lnk", I am using Labview 2011 SP1 on a WIndows XP Pro machine, the shorcut files are on a mapped network drive. I can find the shortcut files if a open a cmd window and use the dir command.

It seems to work for me as well. As Mike said, the shortcuts to folders showed up in the folders list.
Here are some other thoughts:
Are you using the pattern filter at all?
Are you using the Recursive File List?

How to have this working? And why until now, we don't have a GUI for shortcuts?
I use the Apple Wireless Keyboard, and need to change the preview keys to a suitable ones, because this keyboard don't have the num pad.
Until CS6, i was using ? and Shift+?, in the place of some kind of Zoom.
But this time, i edit the file, in a sort of way i tried, and non of then change at all.

The best way to add a +1 would be for everyone to file a feature request. Those are officially tracked by Adobe (unlike this user-to-user forum) and the more people that ask for something, the more likely it is to be implemented.

Keyboard shortcut file strategy

I would keep the file for my keyboard shortcut in a special place with a special name.
But now, I can't figure out where PS pulls the file from and I honestly am not sure things don't get screwy doing this.
What do others do about their keyboard shortcut file.
I can't really figure out where it navigates to anymore, it gets confusing, especially as versions change.
What is the best stragegy for this?

After you'll do that Photoshop will ask you where you want to save .kys file OR will save it automatically to your *home folder*/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop *version*/Presets/Keyboard Shortcuts
So either save it wherever you want or grab the file there. After that you can double-click the file to restore shortcuts OR place the file into 'Keyboard Shortcuts' directory for it to appear in Photoshop's dropdown menu.

Obsolete mail files?

I was rummaging through my mail directories trying to find which files had the SOBOR.P worm in them (there were a bunch, a lot of PC folks were infected). Many of them were in various mbox files. Eventually, it occured to me that this file is not used anymore. All the mbox files were dated no later than 2005. After digging around, I found lots of files that hadn't been modified since as early at 2001. Tiger apparently uses a different file structure than the older versions of OS X but it doesn't clean up the old stuff.
I have a second computer with an nearly identical mail folder (it had been copied from the same source some time ago) so I considered that mail folder expendable. I deleted everything dated earlier than 2006 and saw no difference in the performance of mail nor the numbers of messages in various mailboxes.
I think that these files in the mbox folders are obsolete

How to add shortcut files to the Teststand workspace

I am deploying my test stand application using TS deployment utility. At the end I need three four icons / shortcuts to launch the operator interface with different seq file entry points. I have created manually the shortcuts and it is working fine. How do I add these icons to my installer. I tried to add these shortcuts into the workspace. But it is adding the exe instead of the shortcut.
How do I add these shortcuts to the installer / create these shortcuts during installation?

Hi,
I found a workaround that could work for you.
You can write a post.bat file to copy the shortcut created for your program item to wherever you want.
The only thing you have to do is to create the windows start menu item for your operator interface and include a post.bat file in your installer directory to copy the *.lnk file to the desired location.
The Post.bat file is executed immediatly after the installer finishes.
I am attaching a simple installer that installs the CVI simple operator interface and creates a shortcut for it in the Windows Start menu and on the Desktop.
I am only copying the file from the start menu to the desktop in the post file.

If you put the file in the Trash, the alias will not open it. It should tell you that it cannot open it because it is in the Trash. However, if it is no longer in the Trash, the alias will not be able to find it.
If you deleted the trash, there is nothing left for the alias to point to.
Did you try searching with Spotlight?
If it is not in a user accessible place, you might need to search with the Finder.
Type cmd-ctrl-F. Click the Add button to add criteria,
You'll need to add a criteria to search for System Files. In the criteria (Kind) popup menu, select Other...
Then, scroll down and find System Files. Select the checkbox so it stays in the menu and click ok.
Set the second popup to Are Included.
Select This Mac and type htdocs in the search field.

Once my code has been executed, if I look at the underlying .url file from the command prompt I find that my changes have been written correctly. However, if I double click on the desktop icon, it will open
a browser using the previous URL from before I made the change.
Is there some additional step I need to take in order to force Windows to use the new URL that I've just updated?
I've tried modifying the code to delete the .url file and recreate it, and also using SHChangeNotify to send a notification for the file I've updated, but this doesn't seem to help.
