Obviously, it is Oracle's misplay

In Oracle 11g's document Data Guard Concepts and Administration(about how to create a standby database), it mentions:"configure Listener on both side using Oracle Net Manager". But it never mentions installing the Oracle database soft first on the standby host first. No Oracle software, Where does the Net Manager come? No Oracle software how to create LISTENER?

Same document:
2.3 Data Guard Operational Prerequisites
2.3.1 Hardware and Operating System Requirements
The same release of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition must be installed on the primary database and all standby databases...
Does that count?

  • Oracle tuxedo and Oracle tuxedo message queue on top of a virtual machine.

    Hi buddies.
    how is it going?
    A quick question.
So we are going to go live  using Oracle Tuxedo 12.1.1.0 with Distinguished Bulletin Board Liaison and Oracle Tuxedo Message Queue 12.1.1.0  on top of a Virtual Machine (VMWARE) running Oracle Linux 6.2. However we want to know if there are any recommendations or mishaps in which we may face ahead by running Oracle Tuxedo on a virtual machine?
I mean, I am wondering if I have to worry about kernel parameters, virtual machine parameters or any other thing from which could mess up everything.
    Another question.
Does oracle also provide virtual machines certification where Oracle tuxedo would run on top of ?

    Maurice G

    Hi Bruno,
I'm not sure what you mean with Distinguished Bulletin Board Liaison.  I'm guessing you mean a clustered or MP configuration?  And is it truly a clustered configuration or just a single machine MP configuration?
Regarding configuration, are you using Tuxedo services as well or just Tuxedo Message Queue?  The biggest issue related to OS configuration is around IPC resources.  If you do a tmloadcf -c on your UBBCONFIG file, it will help you determine the minimum IPC resources required.  In general I suggest configuring significantly more resources than the minimum to allow for future changes and for some of the parameters for heavier loads.  In particular IPC message queue parameters are heavily dependent upon load.  So make sure the maximum message size and queue size are large enough for your anticipated workload.  You can monitor them under load using the ipcs command.
We don't certify virtual machine environment but support them as long as the VM vendor assures compatibility, which obviously VMware and Oracle VM both do.

    Todd Little

  • How can i remove manually oracle 10g express edition from vista

    hello
    i use windows vista
how can i remove manually oracle 10 g express edition
    please help

    1. Uninstall all Oracle components using the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI).
    2. Delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE key which contains registry entries for all Oracle products by using regedit.
    3. Delete any references to Oracle services/components in the following registry location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/. Looks for key entries that starts with “Ora” which are obviously related to Oracle.
    4. Reboot the workstation.
    5. Delete the ORACLE_BASE directory. (i.e C:\Oracle)
    6. Delete the C:\Program Files\Oracle directory.
    7. Empty the temp directory.
    8. Empty the recycle bin.
    have you done this?

  • Which ojdbc14.jar JDBC driver to use for Oracle 10g database

When ODI is installed there seems to be an Oralce JDBC driver in place in the drivers folder (ojdbc14.jar).
When we connect to an Oracle datastore and point to a table and use the 'reverse' function to populate the columns - it sort of works OK but does not bring back the datatypes properly. This is found to be when the Oracle table has UNICODE character datatypes NCHAR and NVARCHAR. If a table has CHAR and VARCHAR it is all OK but any table that has UNICODE datatyoe has a problem.
Is this likely to be the JDBC driver ?
We have tried replacing this ojdbc14.jar with the older classes12 and this, as expected, did not resolve the issue.
We then tried replacing it with the latest 10.2.0.4 ojdbc14.jar but again no difference.
Does anyone have any experience with Oracle JDBC drivers and what release level to use - and using against UNICODE datatypes in tables ?
    Regards

Our problem is that when we use 'reverse' to populate the columns from a physicla table in an Oracle database - ODI is obviously 'seeing' the ORacle table and is correctly understanding the columns in the table and defining them in it's model - but wherever there is a column with a datatype in the ORacle database of NCHAR or NVARCHAR it fails to populate the datatype or the 'length' of these columns. If I manually try to specify the datatype these 2 unicode data types do NOT exist in the pull down list of datatypes.
I see what you are asking - if these datatypes are actually defined as datatypes within the actual technology - I cant access my lab right now but will check as soon as I can. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Init ora file for 2000 server oracle

i'm running 9.02 on windows 2000. How do i find out which init ora file the start services is picking up. I looked it up in the registry and it wasn't obvious.

    Hi,
All oracle parameters registry related can be found in the book for window. If you don't see the init which is pointing to it is going to the default. Look in ORACLE_HOME\database

  • Migration bigger database structure Informix- Oracle : neverending process ?

I have problem: I tried to convert Informix source model to oracle model (real database structure - several tenths of tables, triggers, procedures, ... - without data). Log window "Creating oracle model" appeared and icon and text "Mapping" had been showed. And this state stayed permanent. Nothing following happened, no next changes on file 'omwb.odb' I could to see. After 6
hours i 'clicked' on 'Abort' button. On following Workbench showed message that it could not to do abort and recommended me to restart program.
Are there some limitations in Workbench for complexity of database structure ? How many time can take obviously creating of Oracle model from real (but empty) database ? Can it take more then 6 hours ?!
    null

No, 6 hours is too long, something has gone wrong with the migration. Please send the error.log file (under %ORACLE_HOME%/Omwb/log) and a description of the problem to [email protected] and we shall do our best to assist you.

  • Is BI Beans/Oracle OLAP For Real?

    Sequence of Events:
    1. New install of 9.2.0.2 and patch w DW template
    2. Run catpatch.sql
    3. Install BIBeans catalog
    4. Install BIBDEMO
    5. Test BIBDEMO w Jdev- successful
    6. Create dimensions, cube from an existing star schema
    7. Create BI Designer for existing star schema - failure with message "Unable to Initialize Query Builder"
    8. Ran cwm2_olap_metadata_refresh.mr_refresh, commit - no fix.
    9. Tried to run BIBEANS demo again - NOW, IT'S BROKEN - got the infamous "OLAP catalog not valid" message
    10. BI Beans is dead again
This may be the most fragile technology I have encountered. Is anybody out there using this stuff in production?!?!?!?

    Hi Rich,
There appears to be a problem with the latest schema you have added. The OLAP catalog is a single source repository for all OLAP metadata. This makes it easier to manage (configure, backup etc) all metadata for all your OLAP application. However, it is possible for applications to place the OLAP catalog in an unusable state. The removal of the offending schema will resolve the problem and all other schemas will then function correctly again. So if you remove your new schema, run CWM2_OLAP_METADATA_REFRESH.MR_REFRESH, BIBDEMO should work.
The next step is to determine how/what/which component is not working within the new schema. Looking at your previous postings you are obviously an experienced Oracle database person and seem to understand how to use OEM to create and define cubes/dimensions etc. So I am not quite sure what has happened with the latest schema. Can I suggest you email me directly ([email protected]) and may be we can could discuss this over the phone so I can get a better understanding of your application and your database design.

The script adds "/apex/images" to the the directory name you pass as a parameter.
So, if the images are in the C:\BACKUP\APEX\images directory, you should try using just C:\BACKUP as the parameter.
    It uses this command:
    create directory APEX_IMAGES as '&1/apex/images';

  • How are discs managed under a RAC data server

I am considering using Oracle 9i for a very large database and I am being offered RAC as a scalable architecture. I am trying to find out how the 'shared disc' part of the architecture maps into physical reality. All storage devices in my experience can only attach an individual logical unit of storage to one server at any one time. There is no mechanism to request use of a shared resource. (The logical unit can however be passed around between servers in a cluster transition).
    There are two obvious mechanisms:-
1)Oracle has a request/lock/release mechanism to pass logical units around between nodes.
2)Cache Fusion abstracts the physical layer so that the location of the storage is invisible. The storage is shared between the nodes and each piece of physical storage attached to one database node.
Or it could be something I have not thought of.
    Any information gratefully received.

Here you can see all the process flows : http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-8292
Input file server is used to retrieve/save report, output is used to store report instances.
If you have multiple FRS servers - they all have to point to the same shared location (one for IFRS and one for OFRS)
Report processing servers utilize local cache directories. In some cases it makes sense to share them in some not.
There are several KB articles on webi cache and CR cache configs in addition to default practices described in Admin guide.

  • Using User Defined Function is SQL

    Hi
I did the following test to see how expensive it is to use user defined functions in SQL queries, and found that it is really expensive.
Calling SQRT in SQL costs less than calling a dummy function that just returns
the parameter value; this has to do with context switchings, but how can we have
a decent performance compared to Oracle provided functions?
Any comments are welcome, specially regarding the performance of UDF in sql
    and for solutions.
create or replace function f(i in number) return number is
    begin
      return i;
    end;
    declare
      l_start   number;
      l_elapsed number;
      n number;
    begin

        from dual;
      for i in 1 .. 20 loop
        select max(f(rownum))
          into n

      end loop;
      select to_char(sysdate, 'sssssss') - l_start

    Results:
       first: 303
       second: 1051
       third: 1515

I find that inline SQL is bad for performance but
good to simplify SQL. I keep thinking that it should
be possible somehow to use a function to improve
performance but have never seen that happen.inline SQL is only bad for performance if the database design (table structure, indexes etc.) is poor or the way the SQL is written is poor.
Context switching between SQL and PL/SQL for a User defined function is definitely a way to slow down performance.
Obviously built-in Oracle functions are going to be quicker than User-defined functions because they are written into the SQL and PL/SQL engines and are optimized for the internals of those engines.
There are a few things you can do to improve function
performance, shaving microseconds off execution time.
Consider using the NOCOPY hints for your parameters
to use pointers instead of copying values. NOCOPY
is a hint rather than a directive so it may or may
not work. Optimize any SQL in the called function.
Don't do anything in loops that does not have to be
done inside a loop.Well, yes, but it's even better to keep all processing in SQL where possible and only resort to PL/SQL when absolutely necessary.
The on-line documentation has suggested that using a
DETERMINISTIC function can improve performance but I
have not been able to demonstrate this and there are
notes in Metalink suggesting that this does not
happen. My experience is that DETERMINISTIC
functions always get executed. There's supposed to
be a feature in 11g that acually caches function
return values.Deterministic functions will work well if used in conjunction with a function based index. That can improve access times when querying data on the function results.
You can use DBMS_PROFILER to get run-time statistics
for each line of your function as it is executed to
help tune it.Or code it as SQL. ;)

I need to add new data type like SDO_GEOMETRY in spatial Oracle.
I don't mean the User-Defined Datatype but new datatype imbed in the database.
It might be written in C++ or Java but I do not know how.
Any hints and help will be appreciated. Thanks,

I will compare embedded new built-in data type and UDT as part of my research.
What I really meant was what do you want from your new type that a user-defined object can't give you? (Apart from the obvious shortcomings of Oracle object types being addressed, but that could take a while.) You specifically said "I don't mean the User-Defined Datatype but new datatype imbedded in the database" and I wondered what you meant by that.

This is obviously not an Oracle problem, but native Windows handling.

If you think you've found something and you feel you cannot stay away from it check it on [www.certguard.com] first.
but it looks like they do not have one for 1z0-47. I was wondering if anyone know of a good practice exam? Thank you.Agreed. I have not seen an authorized one for 1z0-047 either.
The easy option is to wait until the following book is published:
ISBN: 978-0071614214: OCA Oracle Database SQL Expert Exam Guide: Exam 1Z0-047 (Hardcover) is scheduled for Publiction 30 oct 2009 (may slip or never happen).
But if you cant wait ...
..... this is an 'Expert' exam with its own certificate, so you should expect to do a little work yourself (or take up oracle training).
I see you've newly (re)registered - having got to where you're at I assume thats due to change of email address. But just in case you are new:
Please read the forum faq, forum blog, be aware of http://www.oracle.com/education/certification and ensure you have accessed exam topics. Checkout refereces to 1z0-047 in this forum and decide which are relevant.
Obviously [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_org_id=1080544&lang=US&p_exam_id=1Z0_047] Exam objective for 1z0-047 is the key document.
Exam Topics(objectives) are key, and best to base your study arround them (most certification exam books now use that layout).
You can probably find out about exams topics you do not know from this book (or the oracle online manuals):
    - ISBN: 978-0-07-149850-0 Oracle Data 11g SQL
It possible you may find the following book helpful (and possibly not!), and its possilble you would find it takes you places you didnt need to study, and it certainly wont be sufficent in itself:
    - ISBN-13: 978-0071597869: OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide: Exam 1Z0-051
    Hope this helps - bigdelboy
