I am have trouble OC an amd 2800 barton cpu.
If I go for a muiltipule of 14x or 15x then it saies that it has a multi of 5 or 5.5
is this right?
I have  kept the fequence at 166Mhz.

First rule of o/c-ing: no two systems are the same!
(the second rule is: you will have to find out what is possible by trial-and-error and in small steps)
So far the magic spell "it must work" did not do you much good, right? Maybe you should start reading and follow some advice?
If your RAM is OK (meaning: OK because you have put it to the test and had it run at 300 MHz FSB in your system, and not: it must work because it is the same brand as my friend's), it is highly likely that you can have your system stable with a little upping of voltages (which, for instance, may be necessary because electronic components are produced with a certain tolerance - again: no two boards are exactly the same)
Good Luck!
Hans
PS: changing this kind of settings without having done the reading will mean that you are putting your hardware at risk - the fact that your friend's system will work with those settings is no gurantee at all that your system will be able to handle it. H.

  • KT3 Ultra2 AMD 2800+ won't boot at 166 fsb

    Hello guys / girls,
I've searched the database multiple times for this, but couldn't find anyone with the same problem:
My computer won't boot into windows or linux at fsb 166, it crashes during starting of the OS. When I reduce the fsb to 160, everything runs fine. First I thought it was the processor which would get too hot, but it's not getting too hot, only 27 C idle!!! The proc is designed to run at 333 / 2 = 166 mhz fsb so I don't see what's going wrong...
    My specs:
    KT3 Ultra2 mainboard
    AMD 2800+ proc
    noname psu: +3.3 28 A, +5 30 A, +12 15 A
Thermaltake volcano 7+ fan at low speed, gives proc temp of 27 deg. C idle
    Kingston DDR-SDRAM PC3200 - 512 MBytes
    CPU-Z info: http://bootje.servebeer.com/transfer/cpuz.htm

But why is it working at an fsb of 160 mhz?? I am using that configuration now, and no problem. The problems start when I increase the fsb to 162 or higher...
Also, according to the guy who sold me the memory, the memory should also work at 333 mhz.
Before I had an XP2800+ proc, I had a XP1700+ proc, which ran at a default fsb of 133 (tweaked to 140 (of course)), with the same configuration as I have now, and no problems at all... So the memory then ran at 266 mhz, thats even lower than 333... But i'll give it a go with different memory, but I can only do that after the weekend (roommate with other memory is gone for the weekend...)
Anyone other suggestions what the problem could be??

  • Cooler for AMD 2800+ AthloneXP (K72NG-ILSR)

    Hi,
I'm looking for recommends for a GOOD CPU cooler for my K7N2G-ILSR system with an AMD 2800+ AthloneXP CPU!
I've tried the Artic Cooling Silent Copper - it sucked! Although it was recommended for the 2800+
    Also,
this might be a silly question   but is the CPU fan supposed to blow the air towards the heat sink or away from it? Does it make a difference?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Applying thermal paste to the AMD 2800+

Do I put a lot of a lot of paste to cover the cpu or just alittle? A lot of paste will hurt or damage cpu? What about alittle or none? I read that you only use 1 1/2 of an uncooked rice of arctic silver 5 paste for on the processor. Is that too little? Once I put 1 1/2 of arctic silver 5 paste, do I suppose to wiggle the Zalman heatsink so the paste can spread over the cpu? I looked at http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm and I saw that the AMD64 CPU had only a little of paste in the center of the processor. The paste are not on the outside CPU. Only the center of the processor needed the paste? Once I install everything, would your recommend that I set my Zalman to normal or silent mode? Thanks in advance!!!

With the 64, since it has a heat spreader which is as large as the entire proc I would use more than 1 1/2 grains of rice.  I would cover the entire heat spreader (top of your proc).  But it is important to use only as much as you need, and to not get it on the sides.
With the older athlon xp for instance 1 1/2 grains of rice would suffice because you were covering such a small area.
Here are some links I have that show the great difference in size.  At the time the instructions were written for arctic silver, the 64 with a heat spreader wasn't out.

  • Msi k8n neo3 cool 'n' quiet & amd a64 sempron 2800+

nice forum! I hope you guys can help me out.
    here's the deal.
I am what one would call a computer expert, but unfortunately I seem to miss something in this particular matter, unlike in other cases, which is very frustrating.
I personally own loads of MSI boards, most of which for amd64 systems, so I have experience with the drivers and utilities and I know how to get these systems up and running with cool 'n' quiet, except for this particular system. I know the cpu can't be to blame for this, since it supports cool 'n' quiet. I also have owned some other boards from other manufacturers (also amd64), so I'd like to think that I am aquainted with the technology.
    msi k8n neo3 motherboard:
    - bought this one three days ago
    - came with bios version 1.05x (!!!)
    - updated the bios to 1.5x (amongst others because of the sempron support)
    - enabled the coolnquiet feature (OC options were enabled, settings to optimized, captain etc. etc. (what I usually do)).
    - installed the drivers from the cd; the .inf driver was also installed (I saw a screen confirming that).
    - put energy management to minimalized setting
    - rebooted
and... nothing! well, except for the normal speed it should not be running on at 0% cpu load (1607 MHz).
tried installing the standard amd driver from the amd website; also nothing... I did come across this problem once before and then I had to conclude that the problem could be resolved by installing another amd a64 driver package that came from another manufacturer's motherboard cd (which should not be the problem of course, because this driver (just as the cpu) should be generic).
    configuration:
    - this board @ bios 1.5x
    - amd 2800+ sempron (latest model) + boxed cooler
    - 2x samsung ddr400 512mb (also tested it with corsair modules)
    - dvd-drive
    - couple of hard drives connected to pata/sata, no raid enabled.
    - winxp-32 us. SP2
apart from this particular problem, the system works just fine.
    who can help me out?

    Thanks for your replies guys.

Appearently only Sempron 3000+ and higher support CnQ .
Some lower models ildes down to as litte as 14W so CnQ don't make much sense in those low power models.
Also if the multiplier is locked downwards CnQ can't work (E.g can you run 7*200 , and make it stick).
Well, appearently this specific model does support it, I know this because it says so on the box... so why isn't it working then?
For the sake of the argument, what if this CPU did support CnQ, what am I doing wrong then?
What I also can't figure out is why these CPU's, according to your statement, should be doing something like 14W in idle mode, whereas these cpu's basically aren't that different from normal amd64 cpu's, except for the support of x86-AMD64 and having a larger cache ; these fully featured amd64 cpu's need something like 80-90W in stressed mode, running on their normal clock speeds and do something like 32W when in CnQ-mode. How is that possible? Because of newer generation production processes with less nm-technology or something like that?

  • K7N2G-ILSR with 2800+ BIOS Settings

I have just changed my CPU from a 2400+ (266mhz) processor to a 2800+ (333mhz) and it won't run with stability unless I leave the CPU FSB Clock at 133mhz (for 266mhz) as it was set before (which means that is goes to 1666mhz CPU speed instead of 2083mhz - is 2083 correct for 2800+ ?).
Can anyone make suggestions for the best settings to make my PC work again. It crashes, blue screens and even the post boot screen is corrupt and flashes strange chars.
I have tried all sorts of combinations and nothing works as long as it is 166mhz FSB.  I know that without a AGP Card, it will only run DDR333 but I was hoping my DDR400 would just downclock.
These are the settings I require
    1. System Performance - Auto?, Manual?, High Performace?
    2. CPU FSB Clock - 100?, 133?, 166?
    3. CPU Interface - Normal?, High Performance?
    4. FSB/DRAM Ratio - BY SPD?, AUTO, 1:2 etc
    5. Memory Timings

How can I tell if its a real 2800+.
I paid for a 2800+ Retail Boxed AMD chip with fan etc in the box.
By stepping do you mean overclocked?
I have tried the manual settings but it always shows jumbled letters etc on post and windows is unstable or won't boot.
I am going out later today to buy Corsair XMS2700.  Does it matter that they are not in a bundled matched pair?  The only pair I can get from my supplier is a 1gb (2x512mb) and its very expensive (£200).

  • TV-Out in MEGAPC-180

    Hello,
I am writing you from Zaragoza (Spain). I've bought a MEGA PC Series (Model 180) trhee weeks ago.
I've installed WXP with SP1 and SP2 and all the utilities and drivers stored in your MEGAPC-CD. I have no problem with any driver: DDR-RAM, DVD, HD and processor (AMD 2800+), but I have missed days trying obtain signal from S-Video TV-Out's matherboard, and i have no image yet. (Nvidia's Software is installed too and I have no dubts with it, because I have experience with this drivers and software)
I've read the user's manual, and I've marked the TV-Out like PAL in the motherboard's configuration, but I have not image yet.
I didn't find anything about it in your webpage, and I bought your MEGAPC for connecting it to the TV, for using it like multimedia center. That's ver important for me, could you help me to activate the TV-Out's matherboard? where's the problem?
Thank you and I wait for your answer,
    --Translation-----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hola,
    Gracias y espero vuestra respuesta.

    Hi!!
For Spain, you have to select PAL B/G. There're some resolutions allowed; since 640x480 upto 1024x768. I usually choose 800x600 and, for games, 1024x768.
Consider what Stu said; does your TV accept s-video input?
Are you connecting it to the right connector or scart? Does your TV work fine with any other PC TV-out?
In addition, can you see anything at the boot sequence? (MSI logo, POST messages, Windows logo etc.)
If you cannot see anything during the booting up, maybe your TV doesn't accept s-video, or the cable isn't good enough, or your motherboard is not properly configured (you must only select PAL B/G, any other settings are unrelated with TV-out), or ) your tv-out is faulty (improbable, IMHO)
Let us know the answer to these questions.
    Good luck and regards!!

  • TV@nywhere Master Recording Problems

The TV@nywhere Master works fine for viewing, but I can't record without problems.  There is a sound problem with all available versions of WinDVR.  The recorded sound regularly "warbles" or pulsates. It is detectable when a musical tone is playing, otherwise it may be hard to hear. It is very annoying once you pick up on it.  Other interVideo programs WinProducer and WinDVD Recorder exhibit the same problem.
I tried PowerVCR and I get an error message when attempting to record in MPEG2:
S0009 : Unable to render preview video stream.
I have all the latest drivers and software versions. I even tried a clean install of Windows several times and a different sound card, but no luck. I'm getting nowhere with tech support. Very frustrating.
    ASUS A7N8X Deluxe MB
Onboard nForce2 sound (also tried Soundblaster Audigy)
    AMD 2800+ Barton CPU
    512MB DDR RAM
    GeForce 5600 Video Card
    250 Gig Hard drive
    Windows XP

Using PowerVCR II 3.0, and there is no Use Smart Tee option available.
    Here's all the options:
    Video -> Overlay Options -> Overlay/Non-Overlay  (Non-overlay causes a crash)
    Profiles
Check boxes for MMX, SSE, 3DNow and Enhanced 3DNow.  All are checked.
Recording / Advanced -> Advanced Options
Video Smoothing (during recording) - unchecked
Intelligent Noise Removal (during recording)  checked
Enable Time-Shifting when recording  - unchecked
Have tried changing most of these settings but always get error message, unless I use MPEG1 which is not acceptable quality.
I did a search in Help for "Smart" and for "Tee" and there are no matches.

  • Pc 4200 SoDimm info needed.

I am wondering if I can place Pc 4200 SoDimm's into my 1.5ghz 15" as according to manufacturing specs the moment any computer is released it can support all available memory at time of launch but have not been tested with newer memory modules ???
It is cheaper than the Pc2700 512mb 333mhz I have now and I need to upgrade my memory as I use intense graphics's editing programs
I have found at www.outpost.com "fry's electronics" Kingston 1gb memory for $99 for the new Powerbook's.
    Also found 4 other makes of Pc 4200 sodimm 1gb for $ 109 to $ 149 at www.tigerdirect.com.

It should be 200 as to my knowledge the slot is not long enough to accomadate 240 pin's and I think the desktop ram uses 240 but please do check out most Ram manufacturers websites and confirm this with the spec sheet's.
I have found last year www.4allmemory.com to be a very good site for Apple ram and they guarantee it to work with a specific model but for the Pc4200 I do not think it has been tested and officially verified to work as time has not allowed for testing by any company.
My old Amd 2800+ 64bit has been tested with the default pc2700 333, pc3200 400, and several above the supposed specs and it just runs better and faster with newer ram even though it can not make use of the higher speeds but should I upgrade I have some decent ram and I do not have to buy ram as it will now work with all the latest hardware as where my old pc2700 333 would not.
Also I have found newer ram to be cheaper than the old junk , compare prices for pc2700 , pc3200 and pc4200.
I you have the time you could open her up and see / count the metal strips on the ram that is currently inside your laptop as this will be a sure confirmation on pin count and then verification from several websites as they do list them as for desktop and or for Laptop.
Before buying make sure they have a propper return policy / exchange policy so if you get the wrong goods you can swop it.

When i insert a copied cd containing either film or data, the burners start reading and the OS halts(meaning that i am not able to move mouse, give commands etc.) After that it seems to return to desktop and eventually halt again and sofort and on. Anybody have suggestions?

  • Auto System Shut Down

Currently I am trying to put together a new computer. I have all the parts needed, and they are compatible. I put everything together, double/tripled checked all connections. when i try to turn it on, it runs for about 10 seconds, then just shuts off. ;(  I'm running it bare, i have no monitor, keyboard, mouse, and sound connected. I just turned it on barebone.
    I am using:
    K7N2 Delta-L Motherboard
    AMD 2800 Benton
    2x 512 kingston Ram sticks
    80gb 7200rpm hard drive
    floppy
    DVD drive
    CD/RW drive
    350watt enermax power supply
I have tried taking one of the ram sticks out and turning it on, it didn't work.
I tired getting a new 350watt antec power supply, it didn't work.
    WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?!?!  ?(  ;(
Once again my problem is that the system shuts down automaticly after I turn it on. It will run for about 10 seconds then... it's down again.
    PLEASE!! SOMEONE HELP!!  ;(

CMOS is the chip that stores ya bios info like date, time and cpu settings etc.
It's the 3 pins bellow the small round silver battery.
On my K7N2-L (non Delta) it's jumper JBAT1
It as 2 settings 1 = keep data (normal use)
                     2 = clear data
look at following X = jumper position o = empty pin
    Keep data
    O
    x
    x
    Clear data
    x
    x
    o
after clearing cmos (do it with power off on PC or u will fry it) u will then need to setup bios again.
If this still wont boot have a look at jumpers J10 & J11
    J10 sets cpu fsb mode
    J11 sets cpu fsb frequency.
Look in ya manual it's in there.
Try to get PC to post by setting J11 to
    J11  o     J10  o
         x          o  J10 not bridged = 100mhz
         x
J11 safe mode cpu fsb 100mhz.
It will post then. Just the cpu will be set to a lower speed then it is.
If it posts go in to bios and hit set bios default then bridge  J10 making it 133/166 mhz and J11 x
                                              x
                                              o  this sets J11 to default 133
reboot and it should post good cpu speed.
Hope u understand all this junk i just wrote

System - Neo3 Platinum, AMD 2800+, Pheonix Bios.
Well Windows took a nose dive last night, couldn't repair it and the reinstall didnt take either.  So I dug up an old IDE drive and finally got Windows to run.  I have a  SATA WD Raptor though that I want to make my main C: HD and use another IDE for extra storage.
My problem is trying to get it bootable, when I have the IDE in of course it reads it as C: and my Raptor as D:  I'm not to sure on how to do that in the Pheonix Bios, there are so many settings.
If anyone can help me out it would be appreciated.

You do wonder whethere WD (and others) will learn anything from this.  RMAs can't help anyone, perhaps a little guidance on the casing or an installation sheet would help to resolve some of these ?

  • New Windows XP 64bit, but no drivers for K8N Neo Platinum

    Hello,
I have a MSI K8N Neo Platinum with an AMD 2800+. Just received the new Windows XP 64bit edition after attending a trade show in Houston. Used Partition Magic to make a separate partition on my SATA 400GB HD, knowing there was possibly going to be a problem. This is the final release, retail packaged, not the Beta.
The only drivers found was for my MSI Nvidia 5600 AGp video card. No other audio, Nvidia chipset or board drivers are plug & play. Onboard LAN isn't even found.
Any drivers out yet? I figure i'll have to wait. Can't get updates either bacause it won't detect onboard LAN or a Linksys or 3Com PCI card I tried also.
    Woodrow

There most certainly are nVidia drivers.  The only thing that there aren't drivers for currently is the onboard sound.  This, combined with lack of driver support for my peripherals (webcam and printer) are why I haven't made the switch.
