OC P6N SLi plat. Barrier around 1600MHz?[FIXED] with new bios now at 3.4GHz

I'm currently running oc-ed on 3Ghz, see sig for all details.
I'm trying, to get to 3.2GHz with standard mp @x8 and fsb @1600MHz, but now matter what I try the board either, doesn't boot at all, or hangs at post when I pick a fsb between ~1600MHz and 1700MHz, regardless of cpu multiplier setting.
When I pass ~1705-1710 it boots fine again. and then I can get it stable, but as said I dont want such a big OC, I'm out for a fsb:dram @1:1.
Things I've tried:
-Up Vcore to step by step, no result went no further than 0.1v, cause it's already stable at this speed with +0.025V and to avoid damage to cpu. (I dont know how far to go but this was my limit  ).
-Vdimm auto en also upped step by step to 2.2V with no results, with either manually setting timings or let bios set timings.
-FSB VTT to 20%.
-NB up to 1.5V, but again, it runs on 1.275V stable now.
-SB up to 1.7V, runs on auto now.
I've tried all sort of variations of the things above but I'm getting tired of pushing the cmos button and its no good for my pc either  .
All with no results, if it's below 1600MHz it will boot with everything else on auto or above 1705 MHz it will boot with specs below.
Anyone else with the same problem or did I miss something?
Edit:
I also tried upping PCI-E to 110Mhz, but that didnt do the trick either.

Thanks for your info and input.
I've got a scythe mugen scinf-1000 so I 'm limited to air, watercooling is , yet, to complicated for me
And yes everything above 1710 it will do, even your 1800 boots up fine, but to reach 1:1 I must up the Vdimm to 2.25V for reaching 900MHz mem speed at auto settings, otherwise no post.
And since I dont want to fry my memory  , I'll either have to buy a cooler for the mem or other mem then and this pair is brand spanking new, but was cheap I'll have to say  .
And even then it's stable, but as said I dont want such a big oc, I'm out for a 1:1 divider
But it's bugging me I cant boot @1600MHz fsb  , I just want to run it at 3.2GHz, with mem @800MHz,  but the mobo isnt cooperating.
About VTT thx for the info, I was told en also read about it on the net and they described it as "noise reduction" for compensating the higher cpu speed, but i'll go and bench current setup without VTT  .
They are both, cpu and board, good oc-able, let me say that first, but my mobo will not boot between 1600MHz and ~1700MHz
I know clearing cmos isn't all that bad, but turning on/off your pc 15 - 25 times a day cant be that good though

  • P6N Sli Plat. and Wolfdale

Hi...does anyone know for sure if the P6N Sli Plat. can use the E8400 or E8500?  According to the compatibility list, either "stepping" version of either cpu is compatible if your board has Bios ver. 1.7.  But still I am cautious about buying one of those cpu's since I can't seem to find on forums where somebody has done this successfully (with 1 exception where they played with voltages and all that).  In fact even since bios 1.7 I still only read about people trying it without success.
    Thanks

Going sli with those gts will help when the going gets tough and deliver more frames per second for a smoother gaming expierence. Those new nvidia drivers havent made any difference as far as i can tell. I see youre using klipsch speakers good choice there is no better option in my mind for i own a set of chorus 2s for my stereo and a huge klipsch fan, nothing makes the neighbors hate you more than rattling knick knacks off thier shelves in the houses around me.

  • P6N SLI Plat and floppy drive not working

System says the floppy drive works fine, but I put in a disc and it doesn't recognize it.  All I get is, "Please insert disc".
Windows says that drivers are up to date.
I really need to get it working so I can do a fresh OS install with raid drivers on the floppy.
I think im just retarded, or both my floppy drives are dead... or both my floppy discs are dead.
    Any ideas?

From what I'm reading it sounds like you are able to boot to Windows at the moment right?
If so, why not skip using a floppy disk to load driver, and just slipstream your RAID drivers into a Windows install CD?
There are tutorials all over the web to do this, here's a good one:
    http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Slipstream-your-XP-installation
Regarding your floppy issue, it's very possible for your floppies to be dead. Almost all of mine that I have around are toast by the time I get around to using them.
If you're dead set on using a floppy to load your RAID drivers, go buy a couple new floppies and see if you still have the same problem. If so, then you're a new $14 floppy drive away from solving your problem...

  • E6600 stock sink, P6N SLI Plat.

ok so I built my system last week and its been up and running pretty well for 2 weeks.  But I worry about dumb crap often and I noticed when I installed the heatsink, to get the 4 corner fasteners to fasten the board did bend a little bit pushing the socket portion of the board down.  Just wondering if this is normal, if theres going to be a failure down the road, just dunno.   My AMD 939s never did this.

I'm no expert, but I can say those things are way more flexible than i'd have thought... Had a problem with my P6N SLI-FI, had a sauder ball on one of the holes for my 775 socket.. Before I noticed it I managed to injure my thumb pressing down on the clamp, and the board took the abuse.. I wouldn't recommend but if it works don't mess with it?

  • P6N SLI Plat & Bios 1.31, what's the verdict?

For you guys who've already flashed to bios 1.31 how's it running?  Has it corrected any issues that you had with previous bios versions?  Will your machine allow the keyboard to start on a cold boot?  I almost did it however I just couldn't make myself go through with it.

Ok after not being able to boot by hitting any key this morning I flashed my mb to 1.31.  Other than having to reset my bios settings I don't really see anything different about it.  I'm going to try to messing around with booting to see if the any key works again and I'll report back with my findings.

  • Does anyone have an enzotech ultra-x hsf on their p6n sli plat?

I'm looking for a replacment hsf for my c2d and I tried a thermaltake tmg-i1 but the legs refused to lock into the holes so I'm rmaing it back.  I've been looking at the tec (peltier) coolers and came across a chilltec unit.  I pondered it for a little while but then decided to go with the enzotech ultra-x unit with the little alpha sink on the cpu pad.  You can see it here http://www.enzotechnology.com/cpu.htm.  Do any of you guys have this unit mounted on your p6n?  I saw a review of it mounted on an asus striker with the heat pipes all around the cpu socket so it will clear the msi pipe with no problem.

  • P6N SLI Plat + Adaptec 1220 pci-e sata card = lockup and no drive detection

Well today my adaptec aar-1220sa pci-e sata adaptor card came in and I was eager to install it.  My first attempt to boot up without a drive attached was met with a slow bios screen and then when windows vista finally got to the desktop none of my usb peripherals would work.  I flashed the card to the latest bios and installed the newest adaptec drivers and if I hook my wd sata drive to it I cannot boot.  If I leave it in with no drives attached it will let windows boot however the usb hub is out and I have to remove it in device manager and then reinstall it in order to get my mouse and other usb devices back up and running.  I was wondering if anyone else had tried this card and if you got it to work what did you do?  So far for me it will not detect any sata drive that I hook up to it. Thanks.
PS: I'm going to rma this thing as I've never had a drive controller behave like this thing does.  I don't think that it was ready for prime time yet.

Quote from: Puffnstuff on 03-May-07, 00:59:46
My problems were all induced by the adaptec card.  Once it was removed from the system everything went back to normal.  I've used many add in drive controller cards in my day and none of them have behaved so abnormally as this one did.  I believe that the problem is entirely with the adaptec sata adaptor and not with my system or mb.  If I have to add more hd's I'll get a pci card or just add ide drives since I do have a free slot available.
I have used 2 eSATA cards on previous systems.  Always ran like garbage and screwed up the boot process.  Thats why i got the p6n plat with the esata onboard so I'd have no problems.  My guess is you were having an IRQ conflict.

  • P6N SLI Plat and g92 sli question

Do any of you guys with this mb run it in sli with the new g92 nvidia cards and if so what kind of results did you get?  I'm very tempted to get another evga gts 512 and run it in sli however I'm concerned about the scaling in vista 64 and I'd like to hear from others who might have already done this.  I really haven't seen any benchmarks using this mb so I'm looking for some personal experiences to use as a guide.  I considered swapping mb's however if this one will yield good results I might try it first before spending more money.  Thanks.
Edit:  I looked at the sale ad one minute too long and have already ordered it with overnight shipping.  I should get it tomorrow and once installed I'll let you guys know how it goes.  I'm sure that it won't be long before a new sli mb finds its way into my pc.

  • P6N SLI Platinum Overclocking issue - Almost Fixed

    Hi there,
    (Specs are in signature)
I am new to overclocking and I am trying to OC my q6600 from 2.4 ghz stock speed to 2.8 or 3.0 ghz. What I tried is using the MSI's Dual Core Center Utility to Overclock my CPU first, it was stable for FSB 312x4 = 1248 MHz & CPU core Frequency @2.8 ghz with Memory bus frequency 780 MHz.
Then I rebooted the computer and typed in these values manually in BIOS but I had no post. What I did was only to change the default values ( FSB 1066MHz & RAM Frequency 666MHz ) to  FSB 1248 MHz & RAM Frequency 780 MHz.
Any ideas about what's going wrong in here ?
(I tried the +- 1 Mhz combinations, No post again)
    Thanks in advance.

I have read a lot before making my attempt, and finally I have managed to boot the system at the third try  So here is what I did:
Step 1: I increased the FSB frequency from 1066mhz to 1333Mhz and left everything at AUTO with spread spectrum for CPU disabled.
Result: MSI boot screen showed up, followed by an ===========Exception========= screen.
    Act: Reboot
Step 2: Increased CPU volt by + 0.0375, with the same settings above.
Result: MSI boot screen showed up, followed by an ===========Exception========= screen.
    Act: Reboot
Step 3: Increased FSB VTT by %8, in addition to the settings above.
    Result: Windows showed up  .
    Act: Enjoyment!
Now, I'm running temperature and stability tests, thanks for all the help
I'll keep you informed if I encounter stability errors and fix them hopefully.

yeah well if I set the timing to like 5-5-5-15 or something I'm sure it'll work fine.    But that's not the point...  Cuz if I have to set my timings to 5-5-5-15 just to get it up to the 889mhz that I need it.  I might as well just run the run in async mode at 4-4-4-12 800mhz.
Seriously I have the weirdest ram.  I can run it at 4-4-4-12 800mhz with like 2.0 volts.  So There's like 0.2 volts of overclocking there.  But it just won't work at 889mhz.  And it not like it doesn't pass memtest or orthos.  The weird part is that it passes both at 889mhz at 4-4-4-12 timings at 889mhz.  The problem is that it won't start cold boot.    I'll have to press the power button and then press the reset button to get it to boot.  I guess that's not a really big problem, but having to press that reset button each time I cold boot is just really annoying.
If I set them to 4-4-4-12 at 800mhz, the computer turns on fine.
I think the problem is the precharge for the ram.  I'll bet loosening the timing will make it work, but I just don't want to loosen those timings...
I just bought new ram so we'll see if that solved my problems.  :-P
It might be the electron migration thing though.  I hear electron migration damage to things show up as random unpredictable problems.
I would say my problems are random and unpredictable.
By the way, I just got a couple of fans for the ran slots.  They're sort of just jammed in there.  Kind of not elegant really.  But I now have TEN fans in the computer.  I hope that helps my ram overclocking.

  • P6N SLI Plat power connector question

Do i need to plug in power to the second 4 pin CPU power port? It had a small plastic tab over it so I did not plug in any power to it. Also can anyone tell me what that second plug is for?

If your PSU has a proper plug you should use all 8 pins of the connector.

The other 4 pins were covered to avoid confusion with PSUs that do not have an 8 pin-plug.

The main idea to double the number of pins is to enhance "current carrying capacity" and therefore stability and safety.

  • P6N Sli Plat. weird cold boot issue (solved)

    Hello again,
Since a few days I'm having troubles starting pc in coold boot
If i shut it down and leave it for a couple of hours, cold boot, it wont start, but when I shutdown and power down psu for a minute, it will boot
If I then turn the psu back off and on and leave the pc off, the next morning it starts normally.
Tried on stock settings, no problem, checked psu out, functions normally, none to less fluctuations on all lines.
Set my first disk to boot only, disabled the rest.
Had this running for 5 months without hickups, but since i wanted to go to 3.6GHz  and installation of my new SATA-II, I've had this problem.
    What am I missing.
Tried lowering NB, which results in unstable system, looser timings mem, lower/higher Vdimm, no effect.
System is in IDE not raid since my second is IDE, for storage.
I connected the 8 pin cpu connector instead of the normal 4 and that didnt work either.
Changed slots for the DIMM's, ran memtest at 860MHz 4-4-4-15-2T, no errors after 10 hrs.
Orthos/Prime95 stable after both 10+ hrs, blend and small fft's.
Hope it's not the mobo dying, checked it out and cant see anything funny, or smell strange things.
And as said at stock no problemo.
What did I do wrong this time
    Edit:
After oc-ing to 3.6GHz benched cpu and it ran at Tcores max ~61C.
When i returned to old settings for 3.44GHz, I set everything back the same way it was, even cleared cmos before doing so.
Tcores max after 10 hrs of Orthos or Prime95 ~55C @3.44GHz

  • P6N SLI Plat and realtek onboard sound in vista ?

Ok for everybody who's running the onboard sound in vista I have a question for you.  In your realtek settings do you have a multiband eq to adjust settings or is everything just a preset to choose from?  I dl'd the latest realtek drivers 1.67 and no multiband eq, only thing is presets that you must pick from to shape sound.  I'm looking for a multiband eq so I can adjust each frequency myself.  Thanks.

Everything is just a preset to choose from. I could not find an EQ anywhere. I was actually able to get some nice sound out of the onboard chip. First of all I put a check in "speaker fill". This alone will get sound in all speakers on a surround sound system. Second, I went into "sound effects" and "Room", and then selected "live". Again, this alone will give you sound in all speakers. And third, I set up "room correction" according to my speaker layout. All these combined have produced beautiful sound through my Z680 sound system. Is it true surround sound? I have no idea, but I like it.

Thanks for the tips, but I did get the onboard LAN adapter working again.  I ended up having to power down the PC, removing all power to the mainboard, resetting the BIOS, and then it worked as expected.
My point is that the LAN adapter gets flakey when I start overclocking.  I'm posting to gripe and also to see if anyone else has experienced this.
more likely this is attributed to a bug in the bios. you can flash your motherboard to the later bios release and try again. this is a very risky process as one bad flash can render your motherboard unusable. like i said, make sure u follow the instructions carefully before u proceed.
