OC4J, Stateful Session EJB, & Session Timeout

In my J2EE applications, I have a user authentication layer whereby when the user is authenticated against our LDAP repository after logging in, a Stateful Session EJB keeps that conversational state with the client at all times until the user logs out whereby the session is invalidated. This way I keep track of the user's authentication at all times throughout the whole session and for every operation performed (JSPs etc) by the user during the session. All this works fine through my implementation of the Session Facade and Business Delegate patterns.
However, if OC4J times out the Session (set to one hour in the <session-config> <session-timeout> parameter of the web.xml), the user cannot re-login and proceed. The user has to close the whole browser and re-start a new browser, then login and proceed.
This is causing us a few problems with the users who are complaining about having to do so. Is there an easy way around this problem?

Can you try in a different browser and see whether you can duplicate this ?
Is this a problem with browser - cache ?

    The code for stateful is perfectly fine and working in a normal way. The way you are trying to implement the stateful session bean in your application is wrong.
    think of binding the stateful session bean with HttpSession object.
    So that you will get a unique stateful session bean object.

    I still dont understand what is wrong with my example.
    The first peace of the code i wrote (getting the reference to the remote interface object) works pretty well, and even more it is produced automatically by JDeveloper, so why we cant get a reference to the local interface object the same way?
    Certanly we should use the local interface for getting access to the resource functioning under the same local jvm and i think it doesnt metter wich app server we really use wls or oas or others

              Thanks for the reply. We are running WL 6.0 SP2 with RP3. We cannot reproduce it
              consistently. In your reply you mention "... and EJB handles". Does that refer to
              another patch?
              As for the code, we will run tests with a scaled down version of the stateful bean
              and a simple client servlet. I will post the code asap. The high level call sequence
              is: servlet service() -> lookup ejb home -> get cluster aware stub from home -> put
              bean handle in http session -> call bean method -> server A goes down -> next call
              to the bean -> get handle from replicated http session -> get bean from handle ->
              request is routed to server B. java.io.StreamCorruptedException is thrown, sometimes,
              when server A re-joins the cluster and a request is routed to it (i.e. server B is
              shut-down). One thing I did not mention is that the bean is deployed on server A,
              and server A is also the Admin server. We are considering not using the Admin server
              to deploy the bean, however, but will add another Managed server.
              Will contact support about CR073917: can it be applied to WL 6.0 SP3 with RP3?

  • Deploying Session EJB From Jdev9i(Beta) - OC4J 9i

    Hi All ,
    I wanted from u , i have recently Upgraded to Oracle 9i 1.0.2.2.1 (OC4J) . Now i want a simple Step wise process as how can i deploy my Ejb (Session Bean ) into the OC4J container and Use its DataSource .
    Is it possible to deploy using Jdev 9i (Beta) .
    Can any one please help me out to point to a Documentaion , give me a breif process .

    Asif -
    Yes you can use Jdeveloper 9i beta to deploy your session ejb.
    Step 1 should be setting up your Data Source. In the System
    Navigator Panel expand the "Connections" listing. Right-click
    on "Database" and select "New Connection..." - follow the
    wizard's instructions to set up your data source. Step 2 should
    be setting up a connection to the OC4J container - again on the
    System Navigator Panel ->Connections->Application Servers -
    follow the instructions there. I am assuming that you have
    developed your session ejb using Jdeveloper, right click on
    your .jpr entry (or wherever suits you) and choose "New..." then
    Deployment Profiles. You need to package your session ejb into a
    jar file and I would recommend packaging your jar file into an
    ear file (it really helps for clean deployment). If you have a
    web portion, package that and make it dependent on the jar file
    just to keep it straight. Once you have these, you will be able
    to right click on the jar or web file and deploy to an ear file,
    or straight to the server. If this is what you are looking for,
    you will then just select this and away you go.

    although I don't know how good they are.
    I wasn't quite sure what you were looking for so this post is

    It not necessary that they shoule be in the same package
    Work both ways
    You make a call to it in the same way as you call it from a client
    i.e. to say that an EJB can invoke another in the same way as a client invoke it...make the home object et.al

  • Stateful session ejb life

    Hello,
    If I have a stateful session ejb used in a web application, what determines how long that ejb will stay alive or remain available? Specifically, if a user has a session and that user accesses the ejb, then there is a period of inactivity, yet the session remains open, does the ejb hang around? What controls this? I'm using WebSphere 6 as my application server.

    There are 4 situations to consider....
    1) If client calls remove(), then stateful session bean is killed.
    2) If the resources are going low on the computer then the container can decide to passivate the bean.
    3) If there is a time out for the stateful session bean then
    3.1) If bean is in in ready state then the container can take a decision to kill the bean ...
    3.2) If the bean is in passivated state then also the container can kill the bean but this time with out calling ejbRemove().
    4) If the bean throws a system unchehecked exception then also it kills the bean.

    If you just have OC4J.
    java -jar admin.jar .....
    You can look at the commandlines when you use JDeveloper to deploy to a standalong OC4J and just use them pretty much.
    Or if they have IAS, use the Enterprise Manager web console to deploy your EAR files.

  • EJB Session Stateful Question

    I have a system (bought from another company) that has an API that I can use to access its functionality and the API is session oriented, so to get an instance of the Session API object I need at least to give my autentication details and this is an performance expensive step. This session object is not serializable so I can't have failover on it.
    What I have found out is that this Session API Object is just a wrapper to a EJB session stateful so I'm wondering how I can retrieve that instance in the case of a failure if I have lost the Session API Object refrence?

    So I can serialize the handle or the remote object reference and pass it through the wire and then I'm going to be able to recover the same session object? I could do it with the Handle, what is the difference of using the remote object reference or the handle?

    BC4J provides automatic facilities for deploying any application module as a stateful EJB session bean. If you want to leverage the features of your BC4J application module from a stateless EJB session bean, it's not automatic but it is straightforward to implement. This howto article explains the details.
    For our example, we will create a stateless EJB session bean that uses a container-managed transaction. To keep things simple, let's assume the session bean has a single public method on its remote interface named createDepartment() with the following signature:

    AppException is an example of an application-specific exception that our method will throw if any problems arise during its execution.The goal of this article is to illustrate how to use the BC4J application module named com.example.hr.HRApp as part of the implementation of this createDepartment method on our stateless enterprise bean. Let's assume that the HRApp application module has a view object member named Departments, based on the com.example.hr.DeptView view object, based on the familiar DEPT table and related to the com.example.hr.Dept entity object so our view can be updateable.
    Creating the Stateless Session Bean

    Troubleshooting
    One error that might arise while running the example is that the database connection information in your data-sources.xml for the jdbc/OracleCoreDS datasource does not correspond to the database you are trying to test against. If this happens, then double-check the file .\jdev\system\oc4j-config\data-sources.xml under the JDeveloper installation home directory to make sure that the url value provided is what you expect. For example, to work against a local Oracle database running on your current machine, listening on port 1521, with SID of ORCL, you would edit this file to have an entry like this for jdbc/OracleCoreDS :

  • Error during deployment of stateless session EJB using EJB 3.0

    having trouble deploying a stateless session bean to app server 10.1.3.1 oc4j container.
    deceided to go through oracles demo: How-To Develop a Stateless Session EJB using EJB 3.0 (http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/oc4j/1013/how_to/how-to-ejb30-stateless-ejb/doc/how-to-ejb30-stateless-ejb.html).
    the demo encounters the same issue. so i assume there is something wrong with the app server set up, and not my source code.

    I'm facing the same issue as user#####.
    Your workaround does not work ; when I deploy manuelly the ear file, with a new weblogic-application.xml, I get the same error.
    Does that happen a lot ? :p

  • Cluster and Session EJB replication

              I have a dedicated Weblogic 5.1 box running with SP 6 serving up JSP and Servlets.
              The Servlets do look ups for session EJBs, which are hosted on a separate box behind
              a firewall. My question is:
              If I implement clustering of the JSP/Servlet Weblogic Instance so that I have four machines in a cluster,
              does Weblogic 5.1 or 6.0 replicate the handle to the session EJB's stub only so that in case server 1 crashes,
              Server 2 will be able to retrieve a handle to the session EJBs?

    If the handle is in the HttpSession, then the handle will be replicated. If
              the EJB server fails over in WL 5.1, the stateful session EJBs will be lost.
              WL 6.0 supports statefull session EJB replication for failover, but I
              suggest that you not use it unless you have a specific architectural reason
              to.

  • Problem catching handle ejb session in jsp pages

    Hello,
    i'm trying to develop an ejb application.
    I have created an ejb session stateful in a second ejb stateless :
    InitialContext ic = new InitialContext();
    UserSessionHome home = (UserSessionHome)ic.lookup("UserSessionHome");
    UserSession conn = home.create(login,mdp);
    Then I have to retrieve this ejb session stateful in a jsp page in order to remove it or to call some others functions developped in the bean interface.
    I think that the solution for this problem are the ejb handles.
    But i don't know how and where I can store them.
    Can you help me?
