I worked as a PL/SQL and D2K developer. and want to be in the same platform. So, I looked for a certification that suites this criteria. But I found everything else is Administration based. So, I thought it would be better and more over, as u know, there is no certification in Oracle 10g that means everything is Oracle 10g administration based certifications not development based. So, I planned i would go for this. If i am wrong, plz suggest me.

1z0-052 11G Admin 1 Exam

Please can i get some feedback on the "difficulty" of the 1z0-052 admin 1 exam? Sometime ago I passed the Oracle 8i and Oracle 9i DBA 1 course, and wondered how it compared to these.
I am using the ORacle Press OCA book, by John Watson, and I have just about passed the practice tests, so also wondered close these are in "difficulty" to the real thing?

As a rule of thumb 'just about passed the practice tests' is probably not good enough.
Its an indicator more study is required.
IMHO a better target is something like to be 85% certain you have an 85% probability of achieving a mark half way between the pass mark and 100%.
For the practice tests to be an reasonable indicator of exam performance:
-- You must not have seen the questions before.
-- You should not have revised immediately before taking the practice test (this applies especially to end of chapter questions).
-- Assume the practice tests are a little easier than the real one and will overestimate you score by 10-15% (though sometimes the quality may be less .. and some asnwers may be more amibiguous). And sometimes the questions may be shorter .

Study material for the 1Z0-042 Oracle 10g exam

Those are regular references to certification exams study material. But I suggest you to use the Oracle guides found at the official Certification guide, this will be useful to identify the specific topics you have to be focused on. Then install your 10gR2 database and read through reference manuals and practice, practice, and practice. Most of the material for certification is theoretical oriented, instead of practical oriented.

Looking for authorized 1Z0-514 practice questions

I'm studying for the 1Z0-514 - Oracle Database 11g Essentials exam. I have gone through all of the tutorials in the 11g 2-day DBA manual and Oracle By Example supplement. I think I'm ready but would like some practice questions to test myself. According to http://www.certguard.com/, every hit on Google for "1Z0-514" is a braindump. That site also lists a number of reputable sites for practice exams, although none of them includes 1Z0-514.
Q1: Does anyone know of a verified source of legitimate 1Z0-514 practice questions?
Q2: Does anyone know how relevant OCA practice exams (1Z0-052) would be for 1Z0-514? They seem to have a lot of common ground.

Hi, I had the same problem you are having now a few months ago, after studying the 11g 2-day DBA manual I couldn't find any authorized practice questions.
I ended up going through OCA books and practice questions. I advise you use them, the 1z0-052 and 1z0-514 exams cover very similar topics.

I'd suggest you to start with [2 Day DBA|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14196/toc.htm] documentation
Oracle documentation is a little bit hard to read :) I'd suggest you to read some OCA books. I don't suggest you to preaper to any OCA exam, but those books may be helpful for you

Alter database set TIME_ZONE error

I am following along in the first Sybex OCA book with Oracle 9i Personal Edition using version 9.2.0...(I believe 9.2.0.0.1?)
I am using the seed database that contains hr and various others...I got to the following command, but under the hr login, it says I do not have permission. So I tried logging in as system and it claims ORA-02231: missing or invalid option to ALTER DATABASE. The same occurs if I login under sys AS sysdba (or as sysoper) or if I login under system AS sysdba.
I tried the command (which I no longer remember) to export the init.oca settings (it created INITorcl.OCA or initORCL.oca) as one message indicated it might be the compatibility setting. However that was set to 9.2.0 and the message said it needed to be 9.1 or higher.
What am I doing wrong?
It is on P. 142, Chapter 3 (single-Row Fucntions) and the command is simple enough...
ALTER DATABASE SET TIME_ZONE='-06:00';
(and it should reply database altered)
I have also tried ALTER DATABASE SET TIME_ZONE='US/Central'; and many, many other variances. Ideally, after that succeds one should do a
SHUTDOWN
STARTUP
and then be able to SELECT DBTIMEZONE FROM dual; to get a dbtime of -06:00, but since it thinks my assignment is invalid, I cannot find a way to get it to accept it. Plz help. I have been searching extensively and trying numerous ideas. While I know it is of little importance now, I want to understand every aspect I can.

You can only change the database timezone if you have no TIMESTAMP WITH LOCAL TIMEZONE columns in the database.
TSLTZ columns are stored normalized to the database timezone, that means that after changing the database timezone the interpretation of the data would be wrong.
ORDERS.ORDER_DATE in the demo schema OE is an TSLTZ column
If you remove this column you can change the database timezone.

OCA 10g 1Z0-042 exam; Topics in the book 'OCP All In One Exam Guide'

Hello All
The book is divided into Part I (for 1Z0-042), and Part II (1Z0-043), however the Exam Topics doc on the website seems to cover more than is in Part I. E.g. Flashback is discussed in Chapter 29, a full seven Chapetrs into Part II!!
Can anyone offer definitive advice on the chapters to study, and also if this book covers all the topics? Is the Sybex book more accurately laid out in terms of topics?
Finally, I am considering buying the NetG tutorial disks, and the same question as above, do they cover all the material? I don't want to shell out £700 for nothing(!)

I must have been have been at the horses head. This is a sort of cross reference.
This is one of the first exam I did. (It probably cross references from the books to the exam topics - actually it looks like it juest references between books!).
I worked from the Oracle Press book as master the attacked the Sybex.
I learnt my lesson. I now start off first with official authorative exam topics and build my notes framework from that.

Why not use the oracle documentation for the contents of the exam or better, attend the course from Oracle Univ(which anyways you have to do to achieve your certification) ?

regardsI believe Oracle Enterprise Linux Administrator Certified Associate Exam Guide (Exams 1z0-402 and 1z0-403) (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 978-0071615440) is finnaly due to be published 5th feb 2010 (ref amazon.co.uk .... not always right) and one assumes this will be the most focused book for this exam.
There's a number of other books that would help with 1z0-402 ... i've covered some of those in previous posts. I'd imagine for 1z0-403 one would have to use a number of different sources if you using the above book.
The exams are multiple choice based, however one assumes students will do practical hands on in their preparation.

OCA study book

I am new to Oracle 10gR2. I am planning to sit for the first certification OCA. I am preparing with reading most of the Oracle PDF's.
Can some body recommend me a study book to purchase for the OCA certification, as now the OCA comes with the 10gR2 it should be a new published one. I know it want give me 100% but some thing which will get me some help for the OCA exam.

Good book for OCA

Can anyone suggest good book for Oracle Application Server OCA

I can tell you from personal experience that it is extraordinarily difficult to write a technical book with zero defects. Spell-checkers and grammar checkers produce huge numbers of false positives when looking for standard (i.e. non technical) errors. Technical errors are easy to introduce -- forget to add a 'Not' in a sentence, or something similar -- and hard to detect afterward. When I read through my study guides looking for errors, I tend to see what I meant to write.
That said, such defects are normally a tiny fraction of the information contained within certification manuals. A couple of reviews on the Oracle Press 1Z0-052 book written by John Watson mention a couple of errors and then imply the book is filled with more. I've read the book and it is very informative. It contains hundreds of pieces of information and contains about ten errors -- all mentioned in the errata on the McGraw Hill site. The books is good preparation for the text and for learning the basics of being an Oracle DBA.
As Aman indicated, using more than one source is a good way to help to detect inaccuracies. I believe in always using multiple sources and the documentation is generally a good option for that.
