OCA Exam 1Z0-042 - focus on Oracle Database 10g R2 from Nov 1st.

I was planning to take the OCA (Exam 1Z0-042) next week. But I recently saw that starting November 1, the focus of the exam will be on Oracle Database 10g R2.
I have been preparing with the hlep of the Oracle10g Administraton I book from Sybex. Will the topis differ to a great extent now that the exam will focus only on R2? Has anyone taken this exam after November 1 and found a great difference?

Thanks bhuttie. I do plan to take the selftest exams but I was just thrown off with the words " focus on Oracle Database 10g R2" on Oracle's website. Did you take the exam after November 1 as well ?

Oracle Database 10g restore from FRA backup only

Hello all,
this is my first post here.
I'm new to Oracle, so my question may sound silly to some of you.
I have installed Oracle 10g on a Windows 2003 Server and have configured the FRA to be on a separate Hard Drive.
I have configured the autobackup of controlfile and archived redo logs to be stored in FRA also.
I have created one test database, and then a full bacakup + incremental backups.
My question is, in case of a total media falure of the Windows 2003 drive, i will have only the FRA backups on the second HDD available.
How can I restore the database using backups from FRA only? I will do a clean install of Windows and Oracle 10g. What to do next ?

During install of Oracle 10g you shouldn't create a database.
Instead you should create a service only using the oradim utility.
Just fire up a DOS box and type
oradim -help
and follow the syntax for
oradim -new -sid etc.
Oracle comes with a dummy init.ora, edit that one setting the correct sid, and locate it in %ORACLE_HOME%\database\init%SID%.ora
Start the service and
startup nomount of the database using sqlplus connecting as sysdba
now in rman
connect target /
set dbid <dbid , first element of autobackup filename>
restore controlfile from autobackup;
restore database;
recover;
and you should be set.

Forms 6 and Oracle Database 10g XE (Express Edition)

I want to know that whether Form 6 can connect Oracle Database 10g XE (Express Edition).
I have installed Oracle Database 10g XE on one PC . On another PC, I've installed D2k 6 (Form 6, Report 6, SQL plus 8, Net8 Client etc.).
I am trying to connect Oracle Database 10g XE from SQL plus 8, through TNSNAMES.ORA, but I could not ?

Oracle prescribes their own training! However one assumes they have some endorsement of Oracle Press Book (ISBN-13: 978-0072257908). (Oracle Database 10g OCP Certification All-In-One Exam Guide (Osborne Oracle Press Series) (Paperback)). Remember the topics have changed slightly since this was printed. There is a Sybex book as well, searching this forum will find it (if you cant find it question yourself if you should be studying for exam), or a reputablable online seller eg amazon.

I am preparing for this exam Oracle Database 10g: administration1 (1Z0-042). Do you know if this exam only contains multiple-choices questions or does it have some "play" with OEM as well? (where students have to perform certain actions in OEM).

It depends on your definition of read the topics. If you mean literally just read the topics then that will result in a failure. If you mean study research practice and fully understand the topics that should lead to a pass.
Bear in mind that Oracle would expect a competent 8i DBA attending the 5 day training course Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Oracle8i DBAs [http://education.oracle.com/web_prod-plq-dad/plsql/show_desc.redirect?dc=D17389GC10&p_org_id=&lang=&source_call=] to be able pass the exam with perhaps 2 to 4 weeks further study, revision and practice.
Interestingly this particular exam has a relatively high pass mark (73%) ... one implication of that is that it is prudent to be comfortable with all topics.
Generally an upgrade exam will cover topics beyond that of the straight OCA/OCP exams. The questions will obviously be at OCP level.
It is possilble the Sybex book Oracle 10g New Features for Administrators Study Guide (Certification Study Guide) ISBN-13: 978-0782143553 which although for 1z0-040 may have some relevance for some of your topics. If you choose to purchase it that is your choice. (It seems to have good amazon reviews ... though all of these books can contain errors, it may or may not be updated for 10gR2, and some Sybex Oracle books are sometimes OTT in some areas IMHO, but that wouldn't stop me using one).

I've read that you should have some "hands-on" experience to pass the test. I have software development experience with T-SQL (sql server). But I've rarely done anything with Oracle specifically (although I've worked with pl/sql).

Download the Database and install it and your on the first step of going through exam topics
Get time to read the Concepts guide, and maybe Admin and Performance guides from the docu library.

1Z0-045: Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Oracle 8i OCPs

Hi,
I was looking for right reference book for the 1z0-045 upgrade certification. I could not find any reference book that is related to this certification. Only one book have found out on Amazon site, which is "OCP Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Administrators Exam Guide (Oracle Press) (Paperback)" published by McGraw Hill.
But this book does not show exem number 1z0-045 anywhere. So I am not sure, is it a right book to buy.
Please let me know if any one has any knowledge about that.

The book you mention is for those individuals who are upgrading their 9i OCP to the 10g OCP. Since you are apparently upgrading from 8i OCP, there is possibly a gap in your learning. You might want to take a look at OCP Oracle9i Database: New Features for Administrators Exam Guide (Paperback) which explains the new features for Oracle 9i to someone coming from an 8i background. No additional exam would be needed in your case but this book may help to fill out your knowledge a bit. You could also take a look at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96531/toc.htm if you would rather not buy an additional book.

Information on Oracle Database 10g Administrator

I have recently written OCA PL/SQL Developer exams (1Z0-007 and 1Z0-147) and cleared both the exams successfully.
Now i wan to focus on DBA side, so i am planning to write Oracle Database 10g Administrator Certified Associate exams.
After going through oraclle univeristy site for exam codes, i found that i need to clear 1Z0-007(ifi opt for it) in level-1.
Since ive already given 1Z0-007 for PL/SQL Developer, so do i need to give the exam once again for Oracle Database 10g Administrator???

(You would not be able to take it twice if you wanted too, as a successfully passed exam may not be retaken).
