Occasional display glitches on a new Mac Mini

I'm running a new Mac Mini with a Samsung S27A850D 2560x1440 monitor on the DisplayPort and a 1080p panel on the HDMI, and I'm wondering whether the issues I'm having are just minor OS glitches or actually something more serious. I haven't had any crashes or program issues, but sometimes when I wake the machine it seems to have problems with display settings - the resolution on the main monitor changed a couple of times, my windows were rearranged once, the Finder windows didn't remember the size I'd set, and this morning my wallpaper disappeared (although it was still selected in settings). Nothing critical, but all annoying.
Generally when the display does wake up, it seems like the Mac is reconfiguring it - a flash of desktop, followed by a pale blue screen for a second or two, then back to desktop. Any suggestions?

Hi Martin, the Mini only has Thuberbolt for Displays...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbolt_(interface)
Though that article says...
This makes the system backward compatible with existing DisplayPort hardware upstream of the driver. A single Thunderbolt port supports hubs as well as a daisy chain of up to seven Thunderbolt devices; up to two of these devices may be high-resolution displays using DisplayPort.[6] Existing Mini DisplayPort adapters for DVI, dual-link DVI, HDMI, and VGA are compatible with Thunderbolt, allowing backwards compatibility and no loss of functionality compared to Mini Displayport.
I cant find any!

  • Can I use an old Apple Cinema Display with new Mac Mini?

Currently I have an early PowerMac G5 that I bought used recently. It came with an Apple Cinema Display (20", I think - resolution is 1680x1050). The Cinema Display does not have a separate power cord so it must be powered from the PowerMac. My question is this - would I be able to use this monitor with a new Mac Mini - would it be able to power it the same as the PowerMac is currently.
Thanks in advance for your help. This is the first Mac I have owned since a "Fat Mac" many years ago (one of those with the 9" black and white screen).

Are you sure you have a 20" CINEMA display? I have 2x 20" CINEMA displays and both have their own power cord (and power brick). Maybe yours is a STUDIO display??? IDK if STUDIO displays worked that way or not, I've never owned one. Anyways, I have a 20" CINEMA display connected to my new Mac mini (early 2009) via the MiniDVI>DVI adapter and it works fine but is powered through the power cord though. I too have a PowerMac G5 (quad) but my PowerMac cannot power the displays without them being plugged in via their power cords. I am thinking you must have a STUDIO display or maybe there was an earlier version of the CINEMA display that could work that way.... idk. Mine were purchased at the end of 2005 along with the PowerMac G5 (quad).

  • How can I connect a new mac mini to my old vga monitor? There doesn't seem to be a mini display port

I have an old monitor with VGA port, and was wondering if anyone knows how to connect this to the new mac mini. Older mac minis have the mini display port, and if that were the case I would use the mini display port to VGA adapter, but this new mac mini doesn't have one. It just has the thunderbolt port or HDMI port for displays... I've been looking for an adapter to connect my display to one of these but cannot seem to figure it out. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

The Thunderbolt port is the one to use; you use the same mini-DisplayPort adapter you used for the older minis.
    Regards.

  • How to connect an Apple ADC display to a new Mac mini?

Has anyone found a way to connect the brand new mac mini, either HDMI or micro to an older Apple display that has an ADC connector on it? Where to buy - the Apple store does not have their DVI to ADC adapter. Thanks.

I found one here for $139:

  • Using An ASD LCD display with a new Mac Mini

I want to utilize a 17" Apple Studio Display with my new Mac Mini.
Does HDMI support the 35-pin Apple Display Connector (ADC)?
It would require an adapter with female 35-pin on one side and a male HDMI (DVI) on the other. The Apple DVI to ADC adapter doesn't work with the Mac Mini HDMI port.
If two adapters are needed they must have the correct gender connections.
    Thanks.

Your correct, you would need an Apple DVI to ADC adapter, And ether mini display port to DVI OR HDMI to DVI adapter. (just a question of witch port you want to use)
Apple DVI to ADC adapter when they were first released cost about 120; now they're kind of rare and harder to find. Online they can go for 200 dollars. so 120 to 200 dollars to make your display work; and displays don't last for ever they have parts that will break down. Older displays have a light bulb inside them; witch burn out just like all the other light bulbs in your house.
Also DVI to ADC adapters can some times give you blurry images and or text.
For 120 dollars you can buy a generic brand 19" LCD. That 19" LCD would have better contrast ratio, brightness, and refresh rate then the old 17" monitor. (and it would have a warranty) Or for 200 dollars you could buy 23" monitor.

  • HDMI to TV as Display for New Mac Mini DOESN'T WORK

I bought a new Mac Mini and was told I could us HDMI to my TV as display.   I was using this TV as display for older Mac Mini (VGA) and for a Windows PC, and DVD via HDMI.     TV is one year old.
The Genius at the store who sold me the new mini said all I needed was an HDMI cable.   Which I purchased.
The screen comes up for the Setup Assistant but as soon I select continue is goes to gray, mixed color scanning garbage mode.    If I turn the TV off and back on, the screen returns (now at the next prompt in the setup assistant) but again it goes gray after hitting continue.    Unusable, CANNOT set up my new purchase.
Unfortunately, the DVI to VGA adapter on my old mini is different and doesn't mate to the HDMI to DVI adapter that ships with new MacMini, so I can't test VGA.   The old DVI to VGA has extra pins not on the new one.
My purchase is not usable and is extremely poor.   Buyer beware I guess.

I have been using MacMini's for commercial digital signage/video conferencing gateway usage for sometime now, they all have HDMI output, about one third are on Lion the others still on Snow Leopard, here's what I have found.
Toshiba & LG tv's are generally reliable, Samsung and Philips generally are not, Panasonic, Sony, Sharp & Viewsonic all work, somtimes with a bit of work from me.
Cables are important (always look for compatibility with HDMI  revision 1.3 or greater (1.4 preferred), don't waste your money on exotic brands, adhere to the distance limitations, I generally send the HDMI signal wirelessly (cost of labor to add wiring to an existing space can be very high) so am limited to less than 50ft, same as with a wire.
READ THE TV MANUAL, find out what HDMI choices your tv possesses, is there a 'parallel' audio input available for the times when your signal origin is a MDP or DVI.
Some TV's just don't work well, cut your losses and get another when faced with this issue.

  • New Mac Mini and Apple Cinema Display

I have just upgraded my Mac (G5 PowerMac) to a new Mac Mini.  I am still using my Apple Cinema display - but I cannot not play all the purchased movies that I have on iTunes now...????

    Greg,
Are these movies HD? If they are, you might be having a problem with HDCP which is copy protection that won't let you view movies if all of your equipment is not HDCP compliant, which probably is your Cinema display. I also have a late 2012 Mac mini with an older Apple 20" Cinema display and cannot watch HD itunes movies. You will have to watch in standard definition. Of course you might have  a different problem, but your question seemed similar with my situation. What is strange is that you were able to watch from your G5 Powermac. Maybe the power PC chip allowed viewing as opposed to intel chips, which I think intel created HDCP. Somebody on these boards probably has better answers then me ;-)

  • Can I use Dual Displays with New Mac Mini (HDMI   Thunderbolt)

    Hello Everyone,
This question may have been asked before... but I just purchased a beautiful new Mac mini and it has an HDMI port in the back and a Thunderbolt port.  I am using a new DELL 23" HDMI monitor that also accepts DVI.   I think I could run another monitor on the Mac Mini, but I don't know which is the best way to go... I purchased a mini-display port to DVI adapter because I heard thunderbolt could accept the mini-display cable.
    1.  Should I purchase the other identical Dell monitor and then run it on Thunderbolt 2 DVI and run it DVI
    2.  Or is there a HDMI splitter that splits the signal into two cables and go that way?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated  Thanks!

I just got the mini server and run a 24" LCD off the HDMI port and a 19" off the displayport (adapter to DVI) and it works a treat there's no need for any splitter.

  • Can I use my iMac with a thunderbolt connection as an Display for my new Mac Mini with thunderbolt ??

Can I use my new Mac Mini with Leopard and thunderbolt in connection with my new iMac as a display ?

If it's a 27" iMac. I don't believe Target Display Mode is supported on the 21" model. But not with a Mac Mini running Leopard. It would need to be running Lion.

  • How do i connect my new mac mini to the thunderbolt display

how do i connect my new mac mini to the thunderbolt displa,  It arrives tomorrow?

It has a built-in Thunderbolt cable, see here: http://www.apple.com/displays/specs.html
So assuming your mini has a thunderbolt port (you said it's new so I assume it does), you'd just plug the display's thunderbolt cable into the mini's Thunderbolt port.

Using 2 displays, connected via HDMI and thunderbolt
Been on to support a number of times now - is anyone experiencing the same issues?

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
    kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

  • Can I use iMac as display for new mac mini?

can I hook my early 2008 24" Core 2 Duo iMac to a new Mac Mini to use as a display?
I love the display, but my iMac is getting too slow, even with the maximally upgraded RAM to 4 GB.  I don't want to get rid of my iMac, so I was thinking of buying a Mac Mini to attach it.
I'm worried that the OS X Yosemite will make my iMac even slower.
    Any suggestions?
    Nick

Not without a standalone monitor; that iMac doesn't support video in.
