Occasional file extension showing up in stacks

I have several folders set as stacks in my dock, mostly filled with Pages documents. Every now and then one of these documents will show up in the stack (in fan view) with the file extension (.pages)
This does not happen in a finder window as the finder is currently set to Hide All File Extensions
Thoughts?

looks like given enough time, it seems to resolve itself. Any new document shows up with the extension for a while, then it refreshes and the extension goes away.

Screenshot File Extensions Showing on Tiger Intel

I've just switched to an iMac Intel 2.8 after years using Tiger on iMac PPCs. Encountering a minor annoyance that I would like to resolve. In the past (i.e. PPC days) screenshots were always saved by name without any file extension showing. On the new Intel machine, despite having "Show file extensions" unchecked in the Finder Preferences, every screenshot has the .png file extension showing. I'm guessing I have missed something obvious to turn this off but cannot find any advice despite searching here and via Google. Would appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

Try this: Click in the desktop and select Finder>Preferences>Advanced tab - deselect 'Show all filename extensions'.

URLs without the file extension showing

This is just one of those odd things I've never had to do, so have never thought about it - but I've been asked to upload a powerpoint presentation, with a URL of just www.mydomainname.com/powerpointname
If anyone could let me know how this is done, that would be much appreciated.

Try this: name your powerpoint file index.html and put it into a folder (in your site) named powerpointname.
Ideally, that will default to showing the file without the filename technically showing.

CS5 chooses wrong file extension

I edit a photo, choose "Save As", change the name a little, and choose JPEG as the type of file. CS5 then incorrectly saves the edited photo as "file". This "file" is completely worthless as CS5 cannot reopen it. And, yes, the file extension says it will be saved as a JPEG and, lo and behold, it is saved as a "file". This is a new problem these past two days. I have been saving vacation photos for six weeks and they all were saved successfully as JPEGs until 2 days ago. I really hope somebody can help me. (Oh, I did reboot, of course...no difference.) Sherry

I have never seen PS NOT attach an extension (the one chosen) to a file with Save/Save_As/Save_As_a_Copy.
I think that Noel might be onto something, with the display of file extensions - by default, Windows does NOT show file extensions for "known formats." This can be changed, and I feel it should be, in Windows' Control Panel>Folder Options.
When doing the Save functions (all three), PS will suggest a file name, based on the name of the Image. Even if you delete that completely, including the file's extension, PS will (or should), still attach the file extension, chosen with the file type in the Save dialog box.
With File Extensions showing, what are the extensions of those files? If they are not showing a program's icon, say PS's, then that can be addressed with the File Types, and the associated program for that type. Again, that is in Control Panel>File Types.

Double file extensions keep showing up when saving a file in Illustrator CS3???

I just installed the CS3 suite and when I am saving files in illustrator I keep getting double file extensions. For example if I save a file named "filename" as a .eps file it shows up in the save window with filename.eps.eps Also, if I click through the possible file types to save it keeps adding them one after the other so if I click. say pdf eps and ai the file in the "Save As:" window looks like this " filename.pdf.eps.ai.ai" Any ideas why this is happening? I keep having to mouse click in the "Save As:" box and delete the extra extension. This is really annoying!!

I've seen extra periods (.) and extra extensions.
then you and Dave have the same conflict with a third party software, corrupt font, corrupt preference or the like because it is not happening o my Mac Pro and I have the same model Mac as you do and I am working fine in 10.5.1 and only problem I have had with AI CS 3 is when I tried to place a 3D CAD file with the extension .dxf which is not really supported.
I have not seen this even once. Would you like to see screen shots, it honestly is not a 10.5.1 or Illustrator issue on its own. This has to be user specific.

Windows 8.1 File Extensions and Show Hidden Files Always showing

Adobe Type Manager problem with Windows 7 and DIN font file extension not showing

I have Windows 7 and for some reason I cannot install Adobe Type Manager onto my Computer.
I need ATM to install the DIN font but am having no luck what so ever.
I can see the DIN font in my Dropbox but it is showing up like this:- ._DIN-bold, no file file extension. what am I doing wrong? is it Mac?

Adobe Type Manager absolutely cannot be installed on Windows 7. In fact, even attempting to install it may corrupt your operating system installation and its ability to properly render Type 1 and OpenType CFF fonts. The last version of Windows for which ATM was at all compatible was Windows XP, 32-bit only!
Adobe Type Manager is not at all necessary to install fonts, even Type 1 fonts, on Windows 7 systems. Right click on the font file for TrueType of OpenType CFF fonts or the .PFM file for Type 1 fonts and select the Install option.
The font file you are trying to install is for MacOS. It cannot be installed on Windows.

Import images grid does not show file extension

I use Aperture in a "referenced" mode. At times, I have jpeg files in the same folder as my nef files (which had already been imported into Aperture). The import images list does not have (or I cannot find out how to display) the file name that shows the file extension too. Of the data available, i can scroll to the right and see a lot of different metadata in the list, but not the file extension.
Does anyone know how to have the file extension displayed in the list that is shown when trying to import?

Aperture can display just about anything you would like to display. The key is putting the correct field into the metadata set for that is being used for the browser or viewer that is active (you can have two ready to go and switch between them or none with a shortcut key)

File extension not showing after a clip has been captured

Hi ,
I am using Adobe CS6 and am capturing in DVCAM format as soon as a clip is being captured , a new project is created with the captured clip in that
But the issue is i am not able to get the file extension
for ex: if you right click on that new clip and choose properties u can only see the file name (for ex: 123) , but if u manually goahead and import the same captured clip from local hard drive , it will show the extension
for ex: 123.avi

How do I show file extensions

Just upgraded. My last iPhoto import left off the file extensions. I would like to view them as part of the title, not in the info pane.

Where were these photos imported from?
iPhoto doesn't display the file extension of the photos but you can select one of the thumbnails and use the File ➙ Reveal in Finder ➙ Original menu option
and be taken to the folder inside the library that contains the file and that file will be selected. You'll be able to check the file extension that way unless it never had one in the first place.

Hello i have a ton of pictures in seperate folders with the extensions .JPEG and i really hate that it shows. I have tried going to the finder and unchecking the show all file extensions, but it does not fix that issue. I also saw this in another topic but i haven't been able to understand it.
Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and paste in the following:

IPhone photo/video library glitch - wrong file extensions, name shift, lost files etc [LONG story - sorry]

I have a 5s running 7.0.4. and my computer is running Windows 8.1.
We had a baby and my phone filled up fast with pictures and videos, so I decided to offload them onto my PC. I connected my phone to the usb port, and directly copied from the DCIM folder to my hard drive.
Something happened during the first attempt, and the process was interrupted. So I went into each of the sub folders, and selected all files, and started the copy process again. I told the computer to skip any existing files.
So all the file counts matched in each folder, and I figured it was safe to start deleting from my iPhone.
On my hard drive, I separated all the MOV files into my Videos folder. But in Windows Explorer, the thumbnail view showed several MOV files with no thumbnail - just the generic icon.
As I sorted my photos into various folders, I also noticed a lot of generic icons instead of thumbnails for the JPGs. I started to feel concerned that my files had become corrupt during the transfer. But then I noticed a PNG file that was a few hundred megabytes. This was odd, so I added the MOV extension to it. Sure enough, it was a video with the wrong extension.
I renamed every PNG and JPG file that had no thumbnail to add the MOV extension. Every one was a video with the wrong file extension.
Then I went to the video folder, and all the MOV files that had the generic icon were actually JPG files.
Well I was just happy to see that the files were not corrupt.
One more time before I deleted things from my iPhone, I did a spot check to see that the largest videos were on my hard drive. I found a few videos that were not copied over, despite the file counts having been accurate. So I copied the videos again, and compared file sizes and date/times when there was an overwrite prompt. Most were matches, but several were the same file name with different sizes and dates.
I didn't know what was going on, but I just wanted to get the files on my computer. So I renamed my local copy where there was a name collision, and copied the videos. I deleted the videos from my phone as I went along.
I felt pretty confident that I had all the files copied now, so I began mass deleting my photos.
I went to the Photos app on the phone, and watched the thousands of pictures disappear, and the glorious free space grow on my phone.
But wait... there was still 1 video in the Photos app. I thought I had gotten all the MOV files off the phone...
I have a photo info app installed, so I was able to see the file name of the video. I searched for that file name in the DCIM subfolders, but the folder that had that series of files (the IMG_3000-3999 files) listed the files with that particular video skipped. It was clearly still on my phone, because I could play it.
Then I noticed it was a 45 minute long video of my baby. About 5 GB. So I figured it must be due to the file size that it wasn't visible from explorer. (Can't explain why that would be, but M$ keeps changing crap too. I never freaking know what to expect from them either.)
After having deleted all the jpg, png and mov files from the DCIM folder, there were still about 26 files in my camera roll on the iPhone. And I could still view the video.
I decided I wasn't concerned about the photos, I just wanted to figure out how to get the video onto my computer.
So I selected all the photos in the photo app (skipping the 1 remaining video) and tapped the trash can.
Poof! One item remained, and it was one of the garbage photos. My video is GONE! ^#@*&#($^@Q&%( And no, I didn't fat-finger it. I was very careful to select the correct thumbnails.
Looking back, I know that I should have just started the entire file copy process from scratch when funny stuff started happening like mismatched file names. But I am a sleep-deprived new mom and just wasn't thinking clearly. It would be nice if I could have used my file/directory compare program to check the iPhone against my laptop, but it is not compatible with devices, only removable drives.
And no, I don't use iTunes. I stopped using iTunes years ago when it would randomly decide to delete contacts from my phone just because they didn't exist on my computer or some sh-- like that. I have always just manually synced all my stuff and have never had an issue like this. To say I am sad to lose that video is an understatement.
I googled "iPhone undelete" and "iPhone data recovery" and downloaded a trial for one of the likely candidates. It turned up a bunch of garbage, but not my video.
Anyways... I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of scenario? Has anybody identified what could cause this to happen? I would like to avoid this in the future. (I will avoid this type of loss, because I know now what I could have done differently to be more careful. But it would be nice if I didn't have to get all neurotic about checking 60GB of photos/videos side by side each time I copy them to my computer...)
I have seen other threads on the forum here regarding corrupted libraries and such, but I am not sure this is the same thing.
One suspicion I have is that it might have to do with the iPhoto app being installed on the phone. I can't articulate why I think that is worth considering. But when I looked at my Video folder, I ended up with many duplicate videos, and all the duplicated videos' file names were 2 numbers apart. As if all the file names got shifted at some point. Very strange.
Thanks for listening to my rant. If anybody has an idea, I am interested. If anybody else has lost precious memories due to this, we should talk. If it is a widespread problem, maybe we can all get together and pound down Apple's door?

In my case number of weird things happen whenever I try to copy pictures/videos from my iPhone from direct USB...
1. JPG files are wrongly named as MOV and vice versa.
2. I copy only folders but in addition files with no extension are copied in the main folder, very strange.
3. Whenever I open one of the folders, strange icons like this () start appearing which cannot be copied even.
Unfortunately I used to delete a lot of files with wrong extensions in the past because I never new they could be fixed.
Apple should answer this!
Note: I am using Windows 8.1 and use a direct USB cable without iTunes to copy the media files directly from My Computer.

File extensions not working as expected, is this normal?

In the finder, there is an option to "Show all file extensions".
So normally, a certain image file could be either "image" or "image.jpeg".
However, I have some weird files: "image.jpeg.jpeg" EVEN WHEN I HAVE SET THE EXTENSIONS TO BE HIDDEN. What I want is to remove these extensions, because they should have been hidden.
I rename it to "image", removing the ".jpeg.jpeg" and it automatically adds another ".jpeg" at the end. Finder just does that, no prompt.
Then, I remove that extension it just added, so it becomes "image". Again, no prompt, because this is the way the file should be. Finder does not tell me "Are you sure you want to rename it to .jpeg"
Now, this file is normal: its extension can be hidden or shown by the finder, rather than being unaffected. Why does Finder do this?
Is there a way to batch-remove duplicate extensions so that the extension is affected by the Finder's "Show extensions" option?

Does this anomaly occur with only a few files or all files?
Try creating a new user account and seeing if this happens when using that account as well.
Have you recently repaired permission?
If you are familiar with the terminal, you can use the command
ls -al@
in the directory in which this file resides and post its attributes here.

Pages v5.5 is saving my documents with a .pages extension. I do not have hide extension selected in the Pages Save dialog. I do not have Show all filename extensions checked in Finder > Preferences > Advanced.

Can you add new file extensions to be treated as C source?

Hi, using Sun Studio 9, is it possible to add a new file extension to those treated as C sources? I can see how to do it for header files (Options -> IDE Configuration -> System -> Object Types -> C and C++ Header Data Objects -> Extensions and MIME types) but this option is not available for C files.
In case anyone's wondering why you'd want to do this: we use .pc extensions for C files containing embedded SQL statements. It's then pretty simple to make a .pc.c rule in makefiles to run the pre-compiler.

Cafe Fibonacci Ep1, touches on it, Lazy Designer has a couple of episodes that show some not so obvious features.] Essentially Bridge is a common repository for all your files, and that can include your colleagues. But it's more than a way to catalogue and codify your files, you can access the rest of the suite from Bridge, you can even access specific functions of the other applications directly within Bridge. Version Cue manages projects. It keeps track of who did what to where and what version is current. It also allows you to submit different versions for consideration and revert specific items of your layout to previous versions or is that Bridge? Hopefully someone with a better grasp of Bridge and Version Cue will come to your rescue. But it's obvious that there is a lot of work group functionality built in to CS.
