Occasional reboot instead of shutdown with kernel 2.6.36

After upgrading kernel to 2.6.36 I noticed that sometimes my laptop (Vaio VGNSR21M) doesn't shut down when I type sudo halt. The shut down procedure goes on regularly and the "POWER OFF" message appears regularly at the end, but then the laptop is rebooted instead of being powered off.
If I simply boot, log to console and type sudo halt immediately then there's no problem, but if I start KDE, do my job, shut down KDE and then sudo halt, the pc is rebooted.
I still have to investigate this behavior more deeply, but I'd like to know if someone has the same problem to share some info.
Thanks

lagagnon wrote:AFAIK "halt" is different to "shutdown", depending on your BIOS and ACPI configuration. Try "sudo shutdown -h now". Does that work?
Thank you, I'll try as soon as I finish my current work session. The strange thing is that halt always worked with kernel<=2.6.35, and occasionally works also with 2.6.36...

  • Z87 MPOWER reboots automatically after shutdown with latest BIOS

    Hi!
I was having some problems with the RAM using XMP profile (CORSAIR CMD16GX3M2A1866C9 2*8GB 1866MHz Cl9). Mainly I had some occasional reboots at windows startup and some rare random blue-screens but it all went away after updating the BIOS to version 1.7 .
But now I'm having another issue. After shutting down the PC it turns itself on after 1 second. It only started to happen after the 1.7 update. Any ideas of what it might be?

  • Can't shutdown, poweroff: machines reboots instead

No matter which commands I use, systemctl poweroff, shutdown -h, halt -p, my machine will immediately reboot instead. Here are all journalctl lines immediately after calling systemctl poweroff: the system will tell me that it is going to shutdown, but instead it reboots. Also, the last message I see before the reboot occurs is along the lines of “rebooting now”.

I tried following up on several suggestions I found around here and online: I disabled Wake-on-Lan in the BIOS, I disabled/stopped tlp.service and tpfand.service (the only power-management-like tools I am running). But that does not help.
Note: the system is not powering off to then reboot. It reboots immediately, just as if I had executed `systemctl reboot'.
FWIW, my system is up to date:
    3.17.2-1-ARCH #1
    systemd 217
Any fixes? It's getting a bid annoying having to shut down the machine through the syslinux menu after each of these reboots.

in your log we can read this :
    rpcbind.service failed
    umount: /var: target is busy
    Failed unmounting /var
it's not normal, you could try to solve these errors, it may help to solve the shutdown problem,
use "systemctl --failed --all" at boot in order to know if all is Ok at startup

  • My mac mini will not shutdown with either Mavericks or Yosemite (following a clean install)

First noted while running Mavericks, my Mac-Mini will not shutdown.  It just hangs on a black screen with the little icon.  I created a clean user account and the problem went away.  Rather than do a fresh install of Mavericks, I waited until Yosemite came out.  I reformatted the drive and did a fresh Yosemite install.  I then restored my apps and data only to find the problem is still present.  I've also tried stopping many of the applications I would normally expect might cause the problem with no luck.  And I tried the one Yosemite suggestion regarding deleting the Library/Caches folder content with no luck.
My naive question:  following the fresh install of Mavericks, should I have done a re-install of my (very many) applications instead of a restore from an image?
I've tried looking at the system logs after I've forced a shutdown with the power button but there's nothing I could find that shows any problems.
Any other suggestions of things to try would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    Thanks.
    It is running 10.5.8.
I am trying to boot up an external drive with 10.5.8 on it. It works on my Macbook Pro which is running 10.5.8, runs on my IMAC running SL. But doesnt work on the mac mini?
It had been running SL, however there are a number of programs I have like Windows Live Sync which are not yet compatable with SL so i downgraded to 10.5.6 which came with the Mac Mini then loaded all updates.
It seems to just go into an auto reboot as soon as i click on it.
i thought it might be the firmware? Is it possible to downgrade them and then re-install?
    I have reset the PRAM.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Secondary Node Rebooted instead of falling to Ok prompt

    Hi all,
We need to get system backup for our clustered DB, before and after our maintenance work.
    We have the following configuration:
    Node #1 and Node #2
    Solaris 8
    SunCluster 3.0
    Oracle 9.3.4
    VxVM 3.2
Before issuing cluster shutdown command, I verified which node is primary.
    #scstat
I issued scshutdown -y -i0 on the primary node, the secondary node rebooted instead of halting to {ok} prompt. (The primary server successfully fall to ok prompt)
When I checked on the logs on the secondary node.

Has anyone encountered this error before.
    Thank you in advance.
    Regards,

scshutdown gives a shutdown command on both nodes. here is the procedure.
    -failover your resourcegroup to node_2
    root@node_2#scswitch -z -g oracle -h node_2
you can check the status of the with scstat
-on the node which you want to backup:
    root@node_1#init 0
    ok boot -sx
    s = single usermode
x = outside of the cluster
Once you're in single usermode, start your backup
If you wish to avoid a bunch of logging on node_2, you can always disable, or set it in maintenance, node_1 on node_2 with scconf:
    root@node_2#scconf -q node=node_1,maintstate
(make sure you know what you're doing here)
to reboot node_1 and join it into the cluster:
    root@node_1#umount -a
    root@node_1#sync
    root@node_1#reboot
ok boot (if auto-boot? is set to false)
    root@node_2#scconf -q node=node_1,reset
    that's it
    cheers,
    Kim

The server shutdown with the above output in the log file, can you please let me know why this happened and any solution for it?

Have you see that in your posted log:

it seems to be a trouble with server performance pack. Try to DISABLE performance pack on your server and restart (unckeck "Native IO Enabled" on your domain"). You can also found some suggestions on http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs92/messages/Socket.html (check for "BEA-000414" message).

  • IMac27 reboots every few days with message "Restarted after error"

My iMac27 reboots every few days with message "Restarted after error". How do I find out what it is upset about so I can repair?

Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Also, OS X- How to log a kernel panic and post a recent panic log (not a crash log.)

  • Os 10.4.7, reboots instead of waking from sleep

periodically my mac reboots instead of waking from sleep (with mouse or keyboard), once every few days. is this a problem? how can i change that?
    should i worry about it?

Try updating the mainboard bios to the most recent:
    >>Beta BIOSes<<
Also, what is the cards s/n and can you upload a copy of the vbios somewhere. You can use GPUZ to copy the current vbios.

  • MacBook Pro crashes with kernel errors

Hi, i'm havinge troubles with my 2009. macbook pro. It keeps crashing down with kernel errors.
I took it to apple, payed for a repair and they didn't fix it. Now i don't know what to do. I recently noticed that my right fan isnt working.
I'm leaving you with one of my error reports if you know how to read them.
Btw, hardware test simple and extended one reports ok. Disk warrior also. Could it be the temperature? Last time it crashet it was at about 76 celsius...crashes are not time reliable, sometimes i just turn it on and it crashes while loading os (its not yet hot), sometimes it can work for an hour or two then die again...

If it's overheating then that's the thermal cut out protecting the system - don't you hear the fan's going at maximum ?  Are you using it on a flat hard surface so there's room for air to circulate ?
If you can't hear the fans running fast then I suggest you run the hardware tests from your install DVD (insert and reboot holding down d) to see if it shows any SNS (sensor) or MTR (fan motor) errors, if so get it to Apple for a fix.

  • MCE errors with kernel 2.6.32.x

I'm running a dual Xeon machine, x86_64, 8G memory, Radeon HD 4350 graphics.
Back in February, I upgraded the system and went from the 2.6.31.6-1 kernel to the 2.6.32.7-1 kernel, at which point the machine started doing random reboots and reporting MCE errors.  I posted over in the newbie section but marked it solved when a downgrade to the 2.6.31.6-1 kernel seemed to solve the problem.  At that point I did run a memory test and found no errors, and temperature monitoring didn't show any problems.
The machine has been rock solid ever since.
Last night I upgraded everything again, and this time went to the 2.6.32.10-1 kernel.  The random reboots began again, again with MCE errors.  Although I've only caught one of them and didn't get things written down, it did look like different error messages.
I've now been working on it for a couple hours with no stability problems.  Before downgrading, I was getting random reboots every 15 minutes or so.  Other than the kernel downgrade, I haven't changed anything.
I haven't been able to find anything out about the problem, and other than preventing kernel upgrades for awhile, am not sure how to proceed.

Regarding link quality:  I had found complaints from other users (on Ubuntu boards) that the open source Atheros drivers for linux have a problem where they didn't actually utilize the wifi's full broadcast/receive power.
This leads to low link quality even when you are very close to the access point.  The random connection drops happen because your card doesn't hear the AP's beacon clearly enough, and it thinks you've moved out of range of the network.
The advice given was to use ndiswrapper to install the (proprietary) wifi Windows driver for your card (which in my case I was able to download from Atheros' web site).  This boosts the card's power to full, giving you better link quality.
In my case signal level and link quality improved by about 20-30 dBm and 20% respectively.  The connection dropouts stopped altogether.
I've heard mention on some other threads here that the latest ath-drivers in the linux 2.26.32 kernel are improved, so the problem may not be as bad as before.  I have not tried them though, since the ndiswrapper solution is working well for me.

  • No sound with kernel 2.6.27

After installing kernel 2.6.27 sound stopped working on my PC. Going back to 2.6.26 fixes it. It is a really strange problem, since music programs crashed as soon as I tried to play anything (tried mpd, audacious). Also, "cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp" gave me white noise, but it came like from "inside" my computer rather than my speakers. I have an integrated intel card (ICH5). If anyone else has this problem I'll report a bug.

APPEARS TO BE SOLVED see end of post
I have a chaintech av710 soundcard which uses the snd_ice1724 module. After upgrading to 2.7.27 I have no sound... The "blacklist snd-pcsp" fix didn't work for me (that module didn't get loaded anyway).
    Things I have tried:
    * Blacklist snd-pcsp
    * Delete /etc/asound.state and reboot
    * Add pci=nomsi to kernel command line and reboot
    * Fiddle with controls in alsa-mixer and xfce4-mixer
    * Stop alsa and try playing
    * Install alsa-tools to get envy24control program, but that didn't load because it expects ice1714 and not ice1724
Funny thing is that now I have no sound at all, except for the little clicks and pops when various sound modules come online. However, after upgrading and rebooting for the first time, I could hear a TINY bit of sound, ie the volume was extremely low.

Think I should file a bug report?
    UPDATE
At some point I accidentally removed alsa-utils. With alsa stopped, I unloaded the snd_ice1724 module, then loaded it again with modprobe. The sound worked after I adjusted the "front" level, which was not previously neccesary. This isn't really a fix though because I had to get rid of ALSA...
    UPDATE 2
    I performed roughly these steps:
    {as my user}
rm ~/.config/xfce4/mcs_settings/sound.xml [i think it was called sound.xml]
    {as root}
    /etc/rc.d/mpd stop
    /etc/rc.d/alsa stop
    rm /etc/asound.state
    rmmod snd_ice1724
    modprobe snd_ice1724
    /etc/rc.d/alsa start
    /etc/rc.d/mpd start
Then started alsamixer to adjust the controls.... And I have sound again. Rebooted, and mpd started playing automatically like it should.
In short I deleted all the sound configuration, I don't know exactly what did it. I think something has changed though because before it was not neccesary to adjust the "front" level to hear anything.

  • ROSS CPU didn't work with kernel patch 112233-07

Just noticed my HyperSPARC (ROSS CPU for S10/S20) had problem with kernel patch.
Got 2 X 180Mhz ROSS CPUs running fine with Solaris 9 (kernel level 112233-07) on S20 until applied the Recommended patches set (kernel level 112233-12), once the patches set installed and reboot, the S20 won't boot up anymore and showed some error on the kernel...
Reinstall again the Solaris 9 (kernel level 112233-07), and applied the Recommended patches set without kernel patch 112233-12, system boot up fine without issue.
Was looking around but didn't find anyone else got same issue (even on Sunsolve site) like me, maybe the box is too old to play with...
    Cheers,

Oops, put wrong patch ID in subject...

  • PC reboots instead of waking from sleep when I OC w/ MSI Afterburner

Wondering if you gentlemen can help me with a strange bug?
I just picked up a MSI GTX 660 Ti Power Edition video card from NewEgg yesterday.  If I overclock my video card with MSI Afterburner, I've found when I try to wake my computer from sleep mode, it reboots instead of waking from sleep mode.  I don't get a BSOD or anything like that, I just tap my keyboard, computer powers back up, and after a few seconds I am greeted with my motherboard's splash screen instead of where I left off in windows (and windows nags me that it wasn't shut down properly last time.)
But if I run my video card at stock settings (no MSI Afterburner OC'ing) then sleep resumes just fine.  My overclock settings aren't extreme, I can run Kombuster & Furmark for an hour and not get any errors/artifacts.  In googling this problem I've come across a suggested fix -  Change "RestoreAfterSuspendedMode" from 0 to 1 in the Afterburner configuration file, but sadly this did not fix it.

    OS: Windows 7 64-bit

    CPU: i5-3570K Ivy Bridge
    MEM: 16GB 2133Mhz DDR3
    HD: 240GB Intel 330 SSD
PS: 950W  PC Power & Cooling
My MSI Afterburner OC settings are:
    Core Volt +100 mV
    Power Limit +14%
    Core +50 Mhz
    Memory +200 Mhz
    Afterburner Version - 2.3.1 (Current)
I'm using the most current Nvidia drivers downloaded from the Nvidia website yesterday.
IF there's any other info you need, just ask!

Try updating the mainboard bios to the most recent:
    >>Beta BIOSes<<
Also, what is the cards s/n and can you upload a copy of the vbios somewhere. You can use GPUZ to copy the current vbios.
