Occasional soft beeps

After installing a new Maxtor 80Gb hard drive in my iMac DV400, and reinstalling OSX 10.3.9, I have been getting soft occasional soft 'beeps' from the computer.
Just occasional, but they can happen right from the moment it starts to boot, and carry on for an hour or so. They sound a little like a quiet version of a smoke alarm in need of a new battery!
The sound doesn't appear to be coming from the speakers, as I have turned all sound off!
Anyone any ideas why it is doing this? And how I can stop it!
Cheers!

'Sounds like it might be a chirp from the drive. Some of them make odd noises waking from sleep, or on spin-up or spin-down, or read/write activity. These fanless iMacs are so quiet, that peeps that would normally not be heard show up quite well.

  • Soft beep when BIOS detect my drives?

    Hello!
Is it normal to hear a soft beep from a 2+ years old MSI P43 NEO3-F (MSI-7514) motherboard (latest BIOS) when it detects my two old PATA/IDE HDDs and a SATA Pioneer DVD burner drive? I am not talking about that normal PC speaker that when booting up a PC (heard that one before it). The reason why I ask is because my motherboard seems to keep losing connections to both of my old PATA/IDE HDDs since last night. :(

Try to confirm if the beep is really from the board. Sometimes, it may be the mechanism from the HDD causing the problems.
OK, I will check on it later. I haven't had HDD disconnections since my post. I did hear the audio when booting up the PC after it. It is reproducable 100%.

  • Occasional sharp 'beep' sound when transition from a photo to a video

    Hi guys-
I've been looking everywhere trying to solve this without any luck (doesnt seems like many out there with such problem).
I'm compiling a video for a family event (comprising of still photos and video clips) but i noticed that occasionally when the compilation play from a still to a video clip- it'll emit a sharp 'beep' noise.
This is what i checked and confirm so far-
    1. it happens only when moving from a photo to a video (but not always occur).
    2. the video clip has original sound volume set to 0.
    3. original video clip does not contain the beep.
    4. background song does not contain the beep.
    5. not all transition from photo following video produce such beep.
    6. the beep still happens even with the background song removed (technically no voice element in the project).
Can anyone share any ideas/experience around this?
    Thanks in advance!
    - Ryan

Does this happen just when playing in iMovie, or after you've rendered the video into a finalized stand-alone file? If you haven't exported the movie yet, I'd try that and see if the beep is still there.

  • Random kernel panics + occasional 3 beeps on boot

    Hello,
Our late 2013 iMac 21.5" is experiencing some very random crashes at this moment.
Right after upgrading to Yosemite the problems started, however they proceeded after multiple complete fresh installs and also after downgrade to 10.9.5.
My feeling is that the timing was coincidental.
The kernel panics mostly occur while the computer is just being on, not used, what software is running doesn't seem to matter. It also happens when there's nothing running at all. Strange thing is that it doesn't seem to happen when for example World of Warcraft is running.
Most of the time the computer reboots fine, occasionally it gives 3 beeps on boot. After pulling the plug from wall socket and plugging back it it boots fine again.
I've ran Rember and that doesn't find any memory problems.
Since we are 2 weeks outside of our warranty it's really annoying and I'd like to solve it.
Can these problems be cause by bad memory? As said, Rember say's the memory is fine...

Well, left it idle this morning to see what would happen...
A multitude of kernels and other crashes was the result.

  • T520 Soft Beep Sound

I've tried to figure out what or where this sound is coming from. It starts after about an hour or two of use with my T520 laptop. It's not loud but it's a soft and high pitch beep sound that usually beeps around 5 times. I can only get it to stop after restarting the computer. I've run the lenovo hard drive and memory tests and have sent it back for testing. The problem still persists. Any help is appreciated.

Kindly update the BIOS and check if the issue resolved.

  • Soft beep sound

I occassionally hear a very soft single beep sound on my new iMac.  It does not seem to be associated with any particular activity.  Is this anything for me to worry about or get checked out?

    Hi Marcia,
Tough to tell really, but if you can't find the cause I'd have it checked out, some hard drives have a beep when having trouble.

  • Occasional soft sound after Windows 8.1 update

    Hi,
I have a strange problem. I updated to Windows 8.1 about two weeks ago. For about a week now I have noticed that occasionally my sound drops. I usually watch shows or something on say 20 volume. The sound suddenly drops and I have to turn it all the way up to 100 to get the same volume as on 20. I reboot my PC (which takes quite long now. seems I should have not updated as it came with a lot of bugs...)  I did not make any changes myself and did not install new sound drivers.
Also, my charm bar stops working so that also takes a reboot to fix....
    I am running Windows 8.4 64-Bit on an HP Envy 15 j063ei.
Has anyone else seen this, or know how to fix it? I am hoping there is a way to fix it that does not help refreshing my Windows because I really do not want to install all my apps and games again. I already had to do that once before.

    HI Gan_Javi,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP ENVY 15-j063ei Notebook and issues after an update. You might need to check for updates from Windows. Here is how to do that.
Click the Windows key and type change PC settings, and click Update and recovery.
click Check now, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates. You can also do this from the HP site under Detect my product click on the Find now button. If updates are found, click Install updates. To make sure all updates are completed restart your computer twice.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Soft beeping sound coming from drive?

Is this normal? Also sometimes I can hear louder than usual whirring sounds, accompanied by the beeps.

I would get it looked at again. If you have had it repaired at least three times, contact Apple Customer Relations and kindly ask them for a new unit. They replace a MacBook of mine after three repair attempts.

  • Powerbook 17 inch beeping!!!!!! HELP!

Today my powerbook started making some soft beeps internally not from the speakers... i bought it at the Apple store in houston on Novembert and they isntalled the aditional 1GB of ram.. it was working great!! until today.. I checked Hardware test and came ok.. so i dont know what is wrong...
It beeps when Im typing a document in texedit, word and right now at this forum...
    whats wrong...
    Please Help..

This issue is starting to "sound" (pun) more like a hardware glich even though you ran the hardware test.
I would hesitate (for now) doing a complete clean by Onyx, since nearly all your settings and preferences would have to be redone ... a pain!
Rather than continue to perform trial & error approaches (with the risk of really creating bigger problems), return to the Apple Store in Houston and have the tech check-out each RAM module and the PB itself.
You could try one more thing first: after shutting down the PB, remove power cable, remove the battery, discharge the static (see PB manual for RAM installation info), carefully remove the RAM cover plate (use a very small Phillips screwdriver or small eyeglass screwdriver), carefully remove RAM modules, switch their position and FIRMLY reseat each RAM module.
Replace the RAM cover plate without stripping the screws ... put back the battery ... plug in the power cable ... reboot.
If that doesn't help .... on to Houston!

  • Charging and beeps

i charge my iphone 3gs (firmware 3.1.3) from the apple charger, a 3rd party a/c charger, and from a car charger. it charges fine. (it took a bit of fiddling to find "iphone 3gs compatible" chargers that work, but that's another story.)
but i notice that when i plug it in to charge, it beeps, sometimes once, sometimes twice, and sometimes the beeps are a little delayed (by a second or two).
does anyone know what the beeping is supposed to indicate? (apart from "charging". the "charging" graphic appears, but that should be consistent and only a single beep.) does it indicate 500ma versus 1000ma or something like that?

Well, I've never seen one beep twice, at least the two that I've had, however the delay is usually an indicator about the connection. Sometimes it takes a moment for the connection between the charger and the charging circuit on the phone to make communications with each other. When you hear the beep and look at the phone, you should see the charging symbol appear. That is all that is. And as long as it is charging, I wouldn't worry about the occasional double beep.

  • Mac mini beeping!

    hello.
I have a mac mini, i bought it just as they were introduced at the start of this this year. i have since installed tiger on the machine.
in recent times, the mini beeps at me.
every time i hit a key, it makes a soft beeping sound that comes from the internal speaker (the beeping does not come from the audio jack). it does not do this all the time, but it seems if i use my computer for a few days without turning it off, this starts. it's not too too annoying, but i know it shouldn't be happening.
    any thoughts? thx.

I'm not getting the GCXKeyEventtranslate error, but i am getting the following:
Oct 23 07:06:39 [68] kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Finder" for over 1 second. Server has re-enabled them.
Oct 23 07:08:08 [68] kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Safari" for over 1 second. Server has re-enabled them.

  • Data Recovery After Hard Drive Failure!

Ok, basically, I've got a 2 1/2 year old iBook G4 with a bombed hard drive, and unfortunately, the last time I backed up was around 3 months ago. Here's what happened right before the crash: some applications like Widgets and Safari were acting fluky, and it wouldn't let me open Word documents, so I restarted, because I thought it might have something to do with the fact that i had downloaded the new version of itunes not that long ago and hadn't restarted since. well, when i restarted, the gray screen with the wheel and the apple symbol went on for a really long time, and then the blue screen came up with the cursor, but nothing else happened, and the blue screen just stayed there. as far as i know, the hard drive wasn't making any unusual noises, just the usual occasional soft sounds that my hard drive has always made (there are usual sounds, right?) a piece of information that might be useful is that the hard drive was almost full (it only had about 5 GB left, which i understand is how much you should leave) could this have caused the failure maybe? anyway, i tried using the hard drive as a target and tried getting another computer to recognize it and pull the files off, but that didn't work. so, i brought it into the apple store, and they got it to boot up but using some external hard drive, i think. they tried disk utility, but that didn't see my hard drive. then the tried disk warrior, and that saw it and repaired it or something, but then it couldn't get the drive to mount. so, i'm assuming that because disk warrior didn't work and couldn't get it to mount, then other software like data rescue, etc... won't either. like all computer users, i've got some REALLY REALLY important data on there, and all the data recovery places i've gotten quotes from are pretty pricey. if the drive doesn't require physical data recovery, only non-physical, as i hope, the cheapest is still $350. even so, the person on the phone there didn't seem to know nearly as much as the people at the more pricier places. so, are there any other options besides expensive data recovery? i read something about using dd - a unix thing, but i don't know the first thing about it (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382) so i'm not sure i want to risk messing it up even more. and, if worse comes to worst, then i'll use a data recovery place... but can anyone tell me if they've used any of the data recovery companies below, and which ones are good?
(first three do evaluation for free, and then you decide if you want to continue based on more accurate price idea)
    MacintoshDataRecovery.com
    $500 non physical
    $1100-1600 physical
    Heroic Efforts
    http://www.heroicdata.com/data_recovery
    $350 non physical
ships to another (very expensive) place if physical
    ACS Data Recovery
    http://www.acsdata.com/index.htm
    $600-700 non physical
    DriveSavers.com
(recommended by Apple, probably the best, but the most steep, too)
could cost anywhere from $500-$2700 and $200 evaluation fee even if data is unrecoverable
Since this is our fourth hard drive failure in four different iBooks in 2 1/2 years, i am starting to become seriously disillusioned about the quality of the hardware Apple uses...not that i would ever get a dell or anything, but still....
THANK YOU in advance for any tips you might be able to offer, and also for reading this extremely long post!

I have read good reports concerning Data Rescue although I have not used it myself.
Once you get your data back, focus on a regular (even daily) backup routine, because as you know only so well, the question is not if a drive will fail, it's when.
    My condolences, by the way.

  • Mini Ipod won't turn on! Reset not working! Help!

I had not charged my ipod since I was away from home. Got home and plugged the USB into the Ipod. Next morning, noticed the Ipod blinking the apple sign and it would not turn on. I let the Ipod drain for 2 days. Now it's no longer blinking the Apple sign when I plug in the USB, but now it will show any sign of life at all. When USB plugged, I hear a soft beeping noise from the Ipod. Tried resetting Ipod holding Menu and Select for 6-10 seconds several times, no luck. Tried updating the Ipod, but it's not recognizing Ipod when it's plugged in (It says to plug in Ipod, when it already is plugged in). I restarted PC 2x and plugged USB into all three different ports. USB ports working since I can transfer pictures from my digital camera using the USB ports. HELP! What else can I try before I take into an Apple store? I didn't pruchase it at Apple, rather, I purchased it at Circuit City less than 6 months ago. I can't go through the service on line since it's not recognizing my serial number.

thanks!! i tried that this past weekend and i thought it worked. i didn't get home yet so i couldn't update my ipod. so i attempted to use it. it worked for awhile and then during some songs it will say the battery is dead and die on me. i tried resetting it but it didn't work. it was fully charged, and now it won't turn on. this time, no blinking apple sign, but when i plug it in to my usb, it makes that same sound. i don't have an ac charger and used my sisters. so now, i guess i have to try again? any other ideas? they are greatly appreciated!

  • Can't see external hard drive after error code -36

Hi, was copying iphoto data from an WD My Passport 750GB external hard drive to my MACBook when the system said it could not complete the copy as it had encountered a problem and indicated error code -36.  Now I can't see the external drive (or any data) on any computer.  I have tried 3 different MACs to no avail.  The drive makes a soft beeping noise but then stops but the light stays on.
Any ideas on how I can get access to my data??

Make sure the cable is securely seated on the device side.
If that's not the problem, then either the drive mechanism or the enclosure has failed. If you don't have backups, you'd better hope it's the latter. Remove the mechanism from the enclosure and install it another enclosure. You can buy fairly inexpensive USB docks that a SATA drive drops into with no need for disassembly.
Failing that, your only chance is to send the drive to a recovery service such as Drive Savers. They disassemble the drive mechanism in a clean room and mount the platters in another drive. Cost will be in the 4-5 figure range, and the results are uncertain.
If you don't have backups, you don't have data.
