Occasionally, my tabs and groups will act strange.

I go to the groups menu, and try to click a tab in a group. instead of opening that tab, and changing the window to that group, it partially opens, then doesn't. upon trying again, it'll open, but open within my current group, not the group it was meant to. the tab however, upon viewing groups, has not changed groups. what?
when I say partially open, I mean it enlarges as if to fill the screen like normal, but then stop, and it turns white.

HI hirenloong,
I am sorry to hear that Firefox is slow on starting up. It sounds like you "Restore tabs from last time" and that there are 50 or more? [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-takes-long-time-start-up]
Please make sure that after the update that the antivirus is allowing Firefox to make the connections to those old tabs. [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls]

  • Can't restore previous session (greyed out); lost all tabs and groups

I've had a similar problem with FireFox version 30 as found in the following question: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997956?esab=a&as=aaq
I lost all my tabs including those in two groups (maybe 100 tabs) that I'd been keeping for a couple of years and in some cases much longer. Very occasionally I'll get the "oops this is embarrassing" message from FF and when I click on the Restore Previous Session button they reappear.
What happened this time is that when booting my computer (Windows 7), Adobe Flash wanted to download an update, and instead of waiting for the boot to finish as I normally would, I clicked on the Adobe Flash Download Update button. It then opened FF and hung, so I eventually used Task Manager to end FF. After the computer finished booting, when I opened FF it had no open tabs or groups, and the Restore Previous Session option (and each of the other options in that grouping in the History menu) was greyed.
When investigating, I find I do have the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files from yesterday (each about 4.5 mb), but I don't know how to access them because the Restore Previous Session option is greyed.

Awesome. And maybe back up your sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files somewhere outside of your Firefox settings folder in case you need them for a future recovery. (That would involve copying them back to your active profile folder while Firefox is closed so it finds them when it starts back up again.)

  • Tabs and groups disappear on browser launch

Hello! I have 5 or 6 groups of tabs, each having 2-10 tabs inside. Usually everything's ok, but twice I closed (ALT+F4 or CTRL+SHIFT+W) Firefox and found no groups, no tabs on the next launch. What's wrong?
It happened in ver. 6.0, not in 6.0.2

Try to use Firefox/File > Exit to see if that helps.
App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data [1] in the file sessionstore.js [2] in the Firefox profile folder [3].
Make sure that you do not use "Clear Recent History" to clear the "Browsing History" when Firefox is closed because that prevails and prevents Firefox from opening tabs from the previous session.

It is also possible to use the "Show my windows and tabs from last time" setting, that is usually a more reliable way to restore session data.
    * [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences Firefox/Tools > Options] > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for the Firefox application (Session).

  • My Tabs and Grouped Tabs were lost following reboot and not restored via History.

I closed Firefox properly and rebooted my computer. When I restarted Firefox, instead of seeing the tabs from the previous session, a window with the message that Video DownloadHelper (add on) Update 4.9.6 had been applied, and the other tabs in the open window were what appear to be my default set stored as my Home Page. All of the previous tabs and the grouped tabs that I was using (and would very much like to have back) were gone. I tried to use History>Restore Previous Session, but it was grayed out so I thought to look again and try History>Recently Closed Windows, but there was nothing available to restore either.

Step 1 would be to salvage your sessionstore files and make backup copies before exiting Firefox or making any other changes.
Open your active Firefox profile folder (personal settings folder) using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Copy all files that start with sessionstore to a safe location such as your documents folder.
If you have not exited Firefox since this happened, try the History menu to re-open closed windows ("Previously closed windows") and within each window, to re-open closed tabs ("Previously closed tabs"). Can you get them back??
Unfortunately, by default, Firefox only stores 10 "Previously closed tabs" per window and 3 "Previously closed windows." You can find these lists on the History menu. This might be enough for most occasions, but you can increase the number stored.
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''sess''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click the '''browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo''' preference and enter your preferred number of windows (I have 10).
    (4) Double-click the '''browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo''' preference and enter your preferred number of tabs (I have 20).
If you exited Firefox after the tabs were closed, does the sessionstore.bak file have a promising date/time stamp around that time? If you have exited and restarted Firefox multiple times, it's probably no longer possible to recover the old session data. To keep numerous sessions, you need an extension like Session Manager or Tab Mix Plus.

  • Last night Adobe PS CC updated and it's acting strange

Adobe CC PS updated last night and so Adobe CC PS (2014) updated.  Now when I upload to Bridge and open ACR I have the old sliders, not the new ones and my ACR Presets are acting strange and not working like they were before.   Does anyone know why?  Should I try to delete one of the programs?  I work on an IMax .  Newest system updates.  Thanks in advance
    Julie
    [email protected]

I showed a screen shot of what happens when I open my photo in PS.
So here are the other screen shots.  I select the Preset I've always used.
Which changes my ACR to 2003:
Then I have to click on the I icon thing at the bottom of the grey to convert back to present ACR. (see below)
All of my images are taken with a Canon 6D just a few weeks ago.  Does that help?

  • Tabs and group tabs suddenly and consistently being deleted on start-up

All of my grouped tabs, so carefully saved and really necessary, suddenly disappeared earlier this week, as did all the history and regular tabs. And this morning, once again, all tabs had been deleted.
Checked ALL settings, in Firefox, Avast, and Advanced System Care and all are set NOT to do this. Everything was fine until this past Monday or Tuesday, Nov 26 & 27, 2012
If I do a system restore, can I get my grouped tabs back?
And how do I keep this from happening again?
    Windows 7
    Toshiba Satellite C655 64 bits

    Hi,
Sorry about the issue. From the time frame it sounds like this happened probably after Firefox updates. A likely possibility could be security software interference. If so, to prevent this in the future you could try deleting all existing instances of Firefox and its related processes/files in all the different configuration modules/areas of the security software like process monitoring, sub/spawned process control, virtualization, HIPS etc., in addition to the security software's main configuration panel. Instead create new fully allowed/trusted rules for Firefox + its related processes in all the different modules/panels - a genuine/original Firefox installer as well as all the installed EXEs (Application) and DLLs (Application extension) are digitally signed by Mozilla Corporation (right-click > Properties > Digital Signatures). Even otherwise, some security software may also ask again when Firefox and/or its sub processes are started, and you may be able to allow/trust at that time. Please see [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Firewalls this].
    [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls AV/Firewalls Configuration]
The [https://forum.avast.com/ Avast forum] and the respective forums for other security software would also be helpful.
If you still have the Firefox session open, you can try to '''Restore Previous Session''' via '''History''' ('''Alt''' + '''S''').
If the Windows version includes the [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions Previous Versions] please try this: open the profile folder via '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''Troubleshooting Information''' > '''Show Folder''' and exit Firefox. You can then right-click [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] which holds the tabs, or on an empty area of the folder > '''Restore previous versions''' and try to restore different versions, start Firefox each time and check.
[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder & Files]
Unfortunately Windows [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-is-System-Restore System Restore] would not be able to restore the sessionstore.js file which stores the tabs.

  • My web browsers are infected with pop up tabs and nothing will clean it

Something got install on my MAC and now both my Chrome and Safari are infected with Pop-up TABs, Pop-up Adds, Pop-up Videos. I have tried to use cleaning tools but nothing has worked. I've tried to lock down the security to Chrome but that didn't help either. The pop-ups seem to be targeted to types of sites I've been to (i.e. - photography, web hosting) or they are cleaner adds - MAC Keeper, etc.
With the PC I could use something like Malware bytes but nothing has worked on the MAC so far.
    Thanks in advance.

You may have inadvertently installed adware. Eradicating it is simple. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for one possible solution read How to install adware.
If that does not describe your problem please post a representative screenshot of the anomaly:
    Screenshots (Mac):
To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse or trackpad. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot named "Screen Shot...." followed by a date and time on your Desktop.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button. If you are not using full screen mode you can simply drag the image into the text entry field.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Don't capture or upload any information you consider personal. To edit an existing screenshot, read How to edit a screenshot.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

  • My macbook pro keyboard has stopped working overnight. The DEL button, along with O and P are acting strange. The DEL button is adjusting screen brightness and the O isnt working at all. Is this hardware related? or a software issue?

The left side of the keyboard seems to be working fine but the DEL button and other buttons are doing strange commands. The DEL button is adjusting the brightness and other F commands.
The O is not working at all. Some other letters are coming up with other characters.

Try a different keyboard with your computer if possible. If it woks well, it's a hardware problem.

  • How do i remove flash player from my mac? or find out if it is malware? i recently got a download and it is acting strange...

I am concerned the flash player maybe a virus? how can I tell? I have updated software from Apple... but every time I watch youtube or other sites... a pop up  come come from flash player and asks for permission... I always deny... but this is new... I have never had this problem prior to the flash player update...  thank you

I had the same problem today. It probably started with few downloads from some websites.
I got mine fixed by deleting suspicious .plist files in safari.
You can go to finder and search for safari ,  Use the + sign in the top right corner and select  system files are included in the search. Then just delete the .plist files you think are suspicious.
In my case, I just deleted all of them. And it worked for me.
Hope it works for you too.

  • Since windows 8.1 usb ports and sound are acting strange

    Hello,
Since I upgraded to windows 8.1 my sound randomly stutters(very anoying) and my usb ports get turned off, only the ports that have been occupied since boot, new things work, and not reinsterting the things that were present at boot, in the same or a different
    port doesn't work.
Hell, why do we pay for an OS that doesn't even work?
I expect that something as simple as an USB port or sound would work just fine.
I have installed all the latest drivers but somehow windows seems to screw things up.
When I boot up debian, I have no problems at ALL. And did I pay a dime for Debian? No, it is free.
I am getting really depressed here, paying for stuff that doesn't work.
So does anyone know any other way to fix this OS than by breaking the disc and never return to it?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Firefox loses my tabs and tab groups

I closed down my system normally last night. Firefox closed down. When I started up Firefox this morning all of my tabs and tab groups had gone - AGAIN!
Firefox has done this to me several times and I have never been able to recover my tabs and groups by any of the methods described previously. I am currently using FF 29.0.1 on Windows 7 Ultimate. This loss of tabs and groups has happened in exactly this way on several previous occasions over quite a few years with different versions of FF.
    My history is still present.
Leading up to this I have noticed that FF 29.0.1 was not faithfully preserving tab states. There have been several tabs where, during a session, I have changed the URL that the tab was pointing to only to find that FF has preserved the original URL for that tab when I have restarted it the next morning.
I have come to suspect that what is happening is:
    1) FF saves the tab and groups state in sessionstate.js on close down (and at intervals while running). It creates sessionstore.js with a syntax error in it.
    2) On start up FF loads sessionstore.js, hits a syntax error, (silently) decides that it can't use that store and creates a new one, thereby losing all information in the previous sessionstore.js.
When I save the new sessionstore.js as something else, rename sessionstore.bak to sessionstore.bak.js and then double click it to launch it I get an error dialog:
    Line: 1
    Char: 11
    Error: Expected ';'
    Code: 800A03Ec
    Source: Microsoft JScript compilation error.
Here are the first few characters of the file:
    {"windows":[],"selectedWindow":0,"_closedWindows":[{"tabs":[{"entries":[{"url":"http://php.net/",
The frustrating thing is that I (think I) can see data in there relating to my tabs and groups. Because the JS is minified it's almost impossible to extract the data structures in a meaningful way. Because the file is so large (>2.9MB) and the syntax error my code editors can't make any sense of prettifying it so it's very difficult to pull apart.
I question the use of JS for preserving data in this way. There may be performance reasons for using JS. Wouldn't it be better to use something like XML? At least us poor humans would have a chance of eyeballing the data and doing a manual recovery if necessary. Sod it! We could even write a program to load up the tabs ad groups from the XML!
I have wondered about using Firefox Sync for all of my systems. My worry is that a problem on one machine will blow away my settings on all of them. Does anyone have any experience with respect to FF Sync in this respect?
I've preserved copies of my sessionstate.bak (along with the previous one) in the hope that someone may have a way of recovering the tab and group information contained in there.
If anyone has any suggestions about recovering the tab and group information I'd be really glad to hear them. I can't say loudly enough how frustrating it is to keep losing the tabs and groups. Each time it happens it blows away the context of the several jobs that I'm doing at any one time.
Oh. And I'm writing this message using Chrome as my browser.

What have you tried for session recovery so far?
3MB is quite large and may well indicate some corruption. Still, since as you can see it is largely text, you often can extract the URLs. Doing that by hand would be arduous...
I assume you have seen the following links in other threads mentioning data mining techniques to rescue the URLs from the sessionstore.js or sessionstore.bak file:
    * Using Firefox's Browser Console (formerly known as Error Console): https://support.mozilla.org/questions/969046#answer-471950
    * Using Firefox developer tool "Scratchpad": http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=622036&start=60&p=12098147#p12098147
    * Using a third party website: https://firefox-session-restore.herokuapp.com/
Do any of those work on your file(s)?

  • Windows updates removes all tabs and tab groups so I have to regularly do a system restore to get them back.

When there is an automatic update from Windows or Microsoft Security Essentials, it regularly has removed all my tabs and tab groups. A very frustrating occurance so I have to do a system restore to get all these back. Any solutions to this issue?

After your computer restarts, you should be able to choose '''[[Session Restore|"Restore Previous Session" from Firefox's History menu]]''' to restore all your tabs and groups from last time.
For this to work, Firefox must be set to remember history in the [[Options window - Privacy panel]].

  • Newly opened windows can trash history and groups if closed last

If I have FF set up to remember last opened tabs and groups, and I open a new window (or a link opens in a new window), then if I don't see that "new" window and close my main one, all my tabs and groups are lost.
In fact the browser will remember just that link, and the main window closed before (with all the tabs, groups, application tabs) gets lost.
This is not just frustrating, but a real design and concept flaw!

Look on your desktop. Is there a folder called '''Old Firefox?'''
These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.
These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

  • How do I Move video files from films to tv programmes and group the series together?

I've recently ripped a tv series from DVD and successfully converted to play on iPad and iPhone. However it's listed all the videos under the "films" tab as individual files. How do I move them into the TV programme tab and group them together?
    Thanks for any help,
    Rick

Select the files and Get Info. On the Options tab change the media kind to TV Show. On the Video tab set the Show name. Working with individual files set increasing Episode IDs of the form s01e01 and enter Episode Numbers. Leave Season Number blank if you want multiple seasons listed as a single object.
