Occasionally Scrambled Screen

Every few months, my monitor will become scrambled for no apparent reason. I've not noticed any pattern to when it will happen. To fix it, I have to sleep/wake the computer a few times. I've researched the repair extension program and I don't believe I'm covered. This iMac was purchased in Dec. 2005.
A screen grab of the scrambled screen is at this link.. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2291/2477293588_d427e98d3f.jpg?v=0
If there's a way to embed the picture in my post, please let me know. If anyone has seen this issue before or knows a solution, PLEASE help me out!

  • Any Ideas about 1.2 fix? (Scrambled Screen, etc.)

Anyone have any ideas about how to fix the problems with ipod software 1.2? Does anyone know how to fix the scrambled screen problem or the locking up of the screen, after two months of having to deal with the problem) (iPod software version 1.2 was released on September 12) (other than reverting back to 1.1.2)
    ...yeah, i didn't think so.

yeah, many of us would like apple to fix this problem. I've stopped buying tv shows off the iTunes store, because I can't get the videos on my iPod without the update. Feh!

  • Scrambled Screen from a virus?

I just want to report a possible virus attack. I'm skeptical that this could be the problem, but ever since the antivirus scan, the problem has been eliminated. Here's how it all happened:
    On Wednesday night:
    1. I woke the computer up from sleep mode and the screen was completely scrambled. I was able to move the mouse, but I wasn't able to control any functions and could not move any windows.
    2. I did a hard shutdown by holding down the power button.
    3. restarted and cleared the PRAM. during startup, the Apple symbol was scrambled, but the login screen was not.
    4. I restarted again and reset the SMC. The same symptoms were there. So, I entered the desktop and everything looked fine. But then when I woke from sleep mode, the screen was scrambled.
    5. I inserted the Snow Leopard installer disk and ran the disk utility. It found major problems and was able to fix them.
    6. I restarted the computer and everything was starting up perfectly. I entered the desktop and after a few minutes the screen began to flash repeatedly and then went back to a scrambled screen. This symptom did not come from exiting from sleep mode.
    7. I ran the Snow Leopard installer disk utility again and found no problems with the hard drive.
    8. I ran a hardware test (AHT) with one of the disks that came with my MacBook Pro to rule out hardware problems. Everything passed the test.
    9. My next question was. Could this be a trojan virus? The symptoms just seemed to point at this. I restarted and while the screen was clear, I went into apple.com and found a freeware antivirus app called SOPHOS.
    10. I ran a scan and while it was scanning the problem happened again. I did a reboot, ran the antivirus app and found that it successfully quarantined 5 trojans. 4 of which were in my User-Library-Mail directory and one in my Downloads directory. I checked and the trojans were listed as Windows OS viruses. I eliminated these threats and now I no longer have this scrambled screen problem. Could this have been a virus attack?
Today, when I look back through the console.app and under the Diagnostics and Usage Messages, I found that around the time of the last incident I had a error that reads:
Configd(15) Sleep: Platform Failure Panic - AC 99
    com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.powermangement.sleep
    com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure panic
    com.apple.message.result: Failure
    com.apple.message.uuid: 77F88BFE-0307-4C6A-A356-CB7D9B32CF42

I found the solution to this problem.
I first went to this link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
I could see on this page exactly what I was experiencing. It was a problem with my NVIDIA video card as mentioned in that apple document.
I took my computer to an Apple store, the Genius ran a scan and found nothing wrong. I showed a print-out of the above support document to the Genius and he said that it wasn't a real document and just for customer information. I couldn't believe what I was hearing from this man and he refused to watch a video that I took on my iPod Touch of my Mac Book Pro screen showing the artifacts of scattered pixels on the screen.
That same day, I took my computer to an apple certified service shop for a 2nd opinion. That guy then ran the same exact scan and then my computer completely shut down during the scan, it could not be restarted and he was not able to see the results of the video card test. He contacted Apple support and they said to send it to them in Texas. They completely replaced the video card along with the logic board since both boards are connected together. All this done free of charge. The problem has been fixed, no more artifacts on the screen as described in the above support link.
I think the Genius at the Apple store needs to get his head examined.

  • Occasional Blank Screen on macbookpro

I have a macbookpro that is just over a year old now and occasionally the screen goes blank and the keys stay backlit. There is not activity. I can't do anything short of powering it off and then back on. It doesn't do it too often, but it seems to only happen when I am using firefox.
I have a two years left on my warrenty and I am thinking about having someone take a look at the hardware to make sure there isn't a problem there.
Has anyone had a simular problem with firefox or other software on their mac?

Note the exact time the event occurs, and then check your system logs in your Console application for clues to the cause.

  • MBP wakes up with a scrambled screen

    Dear all,
I have a problem with my MBP 2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo 2. If I want to wake up my computer after it went to sleep it sometimes does not work. I get a scrambled screen instead of the password prompt.
Re-sleeping it with command-option-eject and waking it up again works often and I can continue working.
Has anybody similar problems, too and knows how to fix them?
    Thanks a lot
    Regards
    Thomas

    Hi Folks,
just to report how this problem has been solved. I called apple support, they said that this is a real problem and should not occur.
So I handed my notebook in at my local apple store in switzerland (DataQuest) and they exchanged the logic board.
Since then the error has not occured yet. The problem now is that they did not assembled my MBP properly: the lid only opens if you push the button really hard and the aluminum has a bulge at the FW800 port.
So I have to hand it in again. They said already that is is difficult to reassemble the notebook properly so that the case looks as before.
Has any of you the same experience?

  • Scrambled screen

    Folks,
I'm loving my new iMac Core Duo, but I'm having some occasional funkiness with the screen.
When I first took the computer out of the box, set it up and started it, the display was "scrambled", meaning it look like a mesh of tiny boxes. I nearly freaked out, but rebooted and everything was fine. This morning, my wife woke the machine out of sleep to be confronted with the same screen. Again, a reboot solved the problem.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
Could you elaborate on what you meant by "scrambled"? I just picked up a 20" iMac intel core duo last Friday. And unlike iMac G5 with iSight that I returned to get the new iMac, the displays on the screen were not really crisp. It looked as if it was out of focus.
I ran pixel tests and I didn't see any bad pixels. I thought I had a bad LCD and was going to return it. But after clean install as a preparation for the return, the display seems to be fine. Or at least at the same level as my previous 20" iMac G5. So I decided to keep the iMac for now but I will be quite keen on experience from others.
My new iMac has the stock VRAM option (128MB).
    Thanks.

  • Occasionally my screen doesn't refresh properly...

I have a main menu screen that is list of open sales orders and a list of actions (scripts) that can be performed on the selected order.
One of the actions takes a billing block off of the sales order and SHOULD remove it from the list.
Very occasionally it does take the block off but leaves the entry on the screen (but you can't make it active) as in the case below...
The script refreshes the screen and then puts the successful update message to it but the unblocked message remains on the open order list. The program that this flavour belongs to is a customer program and screens orders that do not have a block set.
Can anyone suggest how this could happen. Is it some sort of  caching issue or a timing issue between the custom program and the time it takes to physically take the block off the sales doc (VA02)?
Here's the tail end of the script ...

The list content is driven by the backend transaction' logic, i.e. the Personas Refresh Screen action isn't going to actually refresh the list screen. So in this case, there should be a backend command refreshing the list explicitly in order to remove the items that have already been processed.

  • Tecra M2 Scrambled Screen

I have a Tecra M2 where the screen suddenly scrambled. I have tried re-installing the nvidia drivers from www.nvidia.com and also the toshiba drivers but they both fail to install (or the laptop crashes during install).
The screen is scrambled even at the BIOS password on bootup so it leads me to believe that it's not the drivers, although by Remote Desktop Conneciton I can see a problem with the nvidia display driver.
The first time this happened, I removed the battery pack and all power for some minutes after which it was okay for another 24 hours or so. The second time this happened looks to be permanent.
I also removed the memory cards (both, one by one) and the screen was still scrambled on the BIOS password.
Can anyone tell me how to resolve it?
    Thanks!

    Hello
According to your description I presume that your display is defective.
To be sure check it with external display. If the picture on the external display is OK it is definitely not because of graphic card but because of display.

  • Defective Replacement iPod - Scrambled screen, random restarts

    Hi there,
I recently paid for Battery Replacement Service for my 3rd Generation iPod. I packed up and FedEx'd my iPod to Apple and all that good stuff.
Apple sent me back a (supposedly) refurbished iPod that's really really messed up:
    - the screen gets all scrambled while listening to songs to the point where the screen is a sea of noise / pixel mung
    - the unit randomly powers down while listening to it
    - in order to power-up the unit to start listening to music, I have to reset it (hold down play and menu) otherwise I am just greeted with a blank screen (with the backlight on)
I've tried the 5 R's in their entirety, including returning the unit to its factory settings. No dice.
Has anyone ever heard of something like this?
The replacement unit is supposed to be covered by a 90 day warranty, but Apple wants a proof of purchase in order to initiate a Service Request, and since the iPod is a replacement unit I have no receipt or anything like that. I'm having trouble getting any response from Apple about getting the unit replaced or any response at all for that matter.
A simple battery replacement has turned into a huge hassle.

Well, Apple has contacted me and they're sending me a box to return the iPod in. Let's try this again then!

  • Quicktime movies play a half scrambled screen  in Windows XP with QT7

Sometimes the quicktime movies in windows xp will only play 1/2 screen and thats scrambled. The lower part of screen is usually a pixaly blue color. The Apple quicktime movies for fcp demos are like that. The same files play fine on my mac. What can I do to correct this if anything.

  • PE9 - occasional black screen instead of video clip

    Hi,
I have Adobe Premiere Elements 9.0.1 and windows XP SP3. In general, I don't have any problems with the software. However, occasionally, the video clip that I have imported in timeline become black (with sound OK). The rest of the clips are OK. Sometimes it helps to restart the program. But then sometime other clip is with black video. The thing is that when I do rendering, if a clip in the timeline was with black video it is then also rendered as a black part of the video.
Any idea how can I fix it? I updated the program. I also downloaded videorenderer.dll as was suggested on some other site without results.
    Thank you.

From nvidia's site they don't show a 8400 ES. Do you mean 8400SE? Although "new" to you it is actually quite old (by technology standards) -  a 2008 product. So the graphics drivers provided with the card will be ancient. You should get and install the most recent version (266.58WHQL) from nvidia.
While your at it check all these other basics as well:
    Install all Windows Updates.
Install latest version of Apple QuickTime (v7.6.9 at time of writing). Even if you don't use QuickTime, PRE relies heavily on it.
Install most recent graphics and sound drivers from the manufacturers web sites.
    Install PRE9 v9.0.1 update.
Delete BadDrivers.txt (use windows search to find it)
    Run Disk Cleanup.
    Run Defragmenter.
    Reboot your PC.
Temporarily disable any anti-virus realtime scanning.
And give us some information about your clips and hardware:
Use the GSpot Codec Information Utility to analyse the file and post screen image.
What project preset did you use?
Where did the clip come from?
How did you get it into PRE?
Post back here with the necessary information described here: Got a Problem? How to Get Started

  • Scrambled Screen after Restore

Ipod Mini that was sitting for 6 months. I updated my Mac Mini to latest ITunes 7.01, and did Full Restore with iPod. Now screen is all scrambled. Scrambled, garbled, distorted, jumbled text, funny lines, etc. It worked fine before the update of software and restore.
Last, I don't have a wall adapter, so I used a firewire to finish the restore. Was that what messed up the iPod?

Is the iPod recognized by the computer? If so, try another Restore.
The firewire thing probably did not screw up the iPod, by the way.
    I hope this helps!

  • 27" iMac, ATI 5750, Bootcamp3.2 and the occasional black screen with XP SP3

Wanted to share my experience with the subject setup and potentially save somebody a lot of time and frustration. My installation would occasionally work. Sometimes it would boot into a black screen and sometimes it would work perfectly. I tried a lot things:
    1. Deleting the bootcamp partition and clean install.
    2. Renaming AppleHFS.sys, etc to *.old.
    3. Downloading and installing some mobility graphic drivers from downloadatoz.com.
    4. Downloading and installing the desktop graphic drivers from amd.
    5. Using 7zip to unzip the bootcamp3.2.exe file and manually extracting and installing the graphic drivers.
    6. Following the directions from Apple support article TS3173.
Everytime I thought it was fixed, the black screen would appear again. One of the comments I read on the forums really struck a chord with me. "XP is getting long in the tooth." So, I ditched my XP SP3 disc and bought an OEM, 64-bit disc of Win7 Professional. So far, this has worked perfectly with absolutely NO black screens (even during installation) on my 27" iMac with the ATI 5750 graphics card.

So, a little update on the situation...
I tried repairing the WinXP installation from the install CD and it did not solve the problem.
Right now I'm trying to completely reinstall Windows XP (SP2 this time) and the Apple drivers to see where the problems start to appear (at WinXP SP2 install, at the SP3 install, at BootCamp 2.1 install,...)
Also, something quite important I forgot to mention in my first post is that the problem appeared after cloning the BootCamp partition from another Mac (iMac 20" Alum) using Mike Bombich's NetRestore tool.
If you have any suggestions, I would really appreciate it!
    thanks
