Occassions where Mac Pro refuses to Shut Down/Restart
I have a Quad 2.8 Mac Pro (Early 2008) and have been frequently running into a problem where both Leopard (and now Snow Leopard) refuse to close my programs and shut my computer down when I ask it to.
This started roughly 4 months ago and started as just a minor nuisance. Since I use Boot Camp and run two operating systems I tend to restart often. I also always shut my machine down when I go to bed.
When I click shut down or restart the window for the logout countdown shows up. I go ahead and click to have it do it instantly and the machine will just sit there. Usually it will come up with an error saying a application refused to be shut down. What's odd is it is usually a program I don't even have open anymore. I can force quit every application I have open and it will still sit there.
Anyone seen this before? I don't even know where to begin.
Check on Activity Monitor if there is a process that is hanged or something... there is got to be a process that is not responding to the kill signal and you might have to force it to die for the shutdown to end...
once you find what process is hanging you can start working out why is it not closing and fix that problem...

As soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down
Linc,
You keep showing up when I search for this problem so I hope you can help.
I'm having the same issue in Premiere and Media Encoder (but not After Effects). My Mac just restarts itself as soon as video is loaded. I can start Premiere and open a project and go through relinking media, but as soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down.
I've fixed the problem temporarily two times. The first time I was troubleshooting what was wrong and wound up putting in my old video card and after that fixed the problem, I switched back to my GTX 680. I also did a driver update. After doing that I was ok for a few days so I figured it was a driver thing or maybe the card just needed to be reseated. Then when it started acting up again I figured something was going on.
So I started searching again and came across one of your posts that recommended removing CUDA. I did that and it worked perfectly for a week until about 20 minutes ago. Crashed in the middle of an edit and now each time I restart Premiere it crashes as soon as video touches my monitors.
I found this post because I specifically searched for "com.nvidia.web.NVDAResmanWeb(8.2.7)" from my Problem Report.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Darren

<Re-Titled By Host>Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the shortened log. Here's the full thing. By the way, where do you learn to read these things? Are there keywords like "error" that you just learn to look for or is it something for in depth?
Thanks,

Mac Pro 2008 keeps shutting down and restarting
Just the other day after being shut down for a week my Mac Pro 2008 started shutting down and restarting on its own. Any idea where to begin troubleshooting?
Then they are probably completely clogged with deleted data.

Mac pro nehalem 2010 with Lion or Mountain, after re-installing lion or mountain Combo, or re-installing iTunes, with or without any peripherics pluged (usb firewire...) with another sessions... Hardware test is all correct.
When i don't launch itunes, my session and my mac can shut down normally...
Excuse my english and thanks at all !Reset SMC.

As the subject line says, my "early 2008" Mac Pro will not shut down. I have let it set overnight and it will not shut down or restart. I also installed an update which required a restart, selected to restart and the computer would not. Also, whenever I boot up, the computer hangs and will not load the finder. I have to do a "hard" restart and after a couple tries it eventually works...should I just call Apple?
Forced shutdowns tend to cause more directory errors.
How many drives?
Any green version?
Did you disable "allow disks to spindown"?
Possible it is an external USB printer or device, or cable?
I'd boot from another hard drive and do system repair and maintenance.
Create another boot volume if need be.
Startup with using Disk utility but also Disk Warrior.
And when it is working, make backups with CCC or SuperDuper.
Lacking that, boot from OS X DVD and go to Utility menu and access Disk Utility. -
I'm using the lates OS X 10.6.8
Everytime i try to shut down my screen goes blue and wheel turns but nothing happens. I need to press the power button to get the Mac Pro to completely shut down, which can't be healthy for my mac?Boot in safe mode and see whether the same thing happens.
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode -
My mac pro won't shut down or restart
my mac pro won't shut down or restart . the only way i can do it is buy holding down the power button

And will not start up in safe mode. I have reset PRAM and SMC. Also restarted with no startup items, no luck. Had the problem of waking from sleep and not shutting down in 10.7, updated to 10.8 hoping for fix, no luck. Any help would be appreciated.
ThanksHi, this log has some similarities to my ipod touch which seems to be not sleeping properly due to wireless issues. Can I check - are you using a wifi connection - if so have you tried ethernet?

Macbook Pro Won't Shut Down, Restart, or Logout after using Onyx.
Hi,
Earlier this week I found that my macbook wouldn't shutdown, restart, or logout from the finder menu (or any other menu, such as Onyx or Software Update). The only way I could get it to restart was through Terminal. I tried every solution, but nothing would fix it. After backing everything up, and doing a clean reinstall, everything was fine. Then, when I used Onyx, I tried to install the Archives Preference pane and the Processor Preference pane. The window just sort of hung there not responding - and finally I had to force quit Onyx. Now my system is back to not shutting down, restarting, or being able to log out again. The good thing is that I think I've isolated the problem. The bad thing is that I have no idea how to fix it. I tried uninstalling Onyx, but that did nothing. I've used Onyx regularly and have never had any issues, and I can't seem to find anyone else with this problem.
Can anyone help? I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum for this topic. If there is a better forum for it, let me know and I can repost.
Another problem that I'm having is when I open iTunes, the dock icon comes up for about a second and crashes. I tried completely reinstalling iTunes, but that hasn't worked. Perhaps I missed something? BTW - everything else is operating just fine (i.e. Quicktime, etc.)HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Run Disk Utility from your Mac install disc.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
You do not need Onyx, especially not good for Snow Leoaprd. You can run cron tasks from the iStat Pro widget available here.

My macbook pro won't shut down, restart or log off
it's a month old. was behaving fine until about a week ago when it wouldn't shut down because itunes kept restarting itself whenever i quit. realised it was because of my alarm clock widget, which i've now removed. so the itunes is sorted, BUT, my mac still won't shut down.
what can i do? someone told me to download onyx but i haven't a clue what to do with it?Don't upgrade to Snow Leopard in the hope that it will eliminate any preexisting problems on your MBP — it almost certainly won't, and you may have other problems as well (e.g., incompatible applications and startup items). Solve the problem first, then perform the upgrade.
If you Safe Boot the computer, will it shut down normally afterward? If so, disable all third-party startup items (System Preferences > Accounts > select your account and click the Startup Items tab), boot normally, and test again. If you can still shut down normally, one of the startup items is at fault. Re-enable them one at a time, testing after each addition, until you determine which one is causing the problem.
There are also applications that can run in the background and don't show up in the Force Quit dialog box — but they do appear in Activity Monitor when you instruct it to list Active Processes. Some can interfere with shutdown by refusing to quit when the Shut Down command is given. If the suggestion in the preceding paragraph yields no progress, let us know what processes are active on your computer when no applications are shown in the Force Quit dialog box. -
My Mac Pro won't shut down properly
I recently got a 2010 2.8ghz quad-core Mac Pro. It has Mountain Lion installed (10.8.2). For some reason, when I try to shut down, it seems like it shuts down with the display turning off and the fans audibly stopping, but the light on the front of the Mac Pro stays on with a continuous, non-pulsing glow. During this time, the Mac is essentially unresponsive. Pushing the button does nothing. The only option is to hold down the power button until the machine shuts down completely. I tried searching for this problem, but all the other threads are in regard to situations where the spinning wheel keeps spinning indefinitely. This is different because the wheel spins, then the computer seems to shut down except for the light staying on. It goes to sleep just fine. I tried resetting the PRAM with no luck. Any suggestions?
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Mac Pro (Early 2008) shuts down unexpectedly
I have a recurring problem with my Mac Pro (Early 2008). I put the computer to sleep; then, when I tap a few keys on the keyboard to wake it up, I hear the start-up sound and it boots up as if it were shut down.
This is particularly strange, because I do not have to use the "power" button on the tower to turn it on. When I tap the keys on the keyboard, as if to wake it from sleep, it makes the start-up sound and boots. I am guessing that somehow it is shutting off when I first try to wake it from sleep, and then must re-boot. But this is odd behavior that I've never seen from any Mac, and I've been using them for almost 20 years.
Any ideas? I'm going to call Apple Support but I always dread those long wait times and often fruitless conversations. I did not migrate information from my previous system; I took the time to manually migrate my files and reinstalled all apps from DVD specifically to avoid problems like this. Very frustrating.I've noticed the same problem for one day with my new MP 2.8 dualquad, got a reboot after every sleep.
This solved the issue for me:
• Reset the PRAM (Boot the machine and hold ALTCOMMAND+PR for 3 startup gongs)
• Reset the SMC -> http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304123-en

Windows on Mac Pro will not shut down
Hi I recently had the MAC Pro the one with 4G RAM, I installed Windows XP on it as well, seems everything is running Ok except that every time when I shut down Windows, it just hang there and I have to press the power button to force it to shut down. Does anyone have any idea why this happen? Anything I need to check? Do I need to reinstall it? Thanks!
Hi, sorry I should have been more specific. The version of the Windows installed is fairly new. If the windows just boot up and then I shut it down, it will shut down right away. But if I run some program like MSN or browse internet for a while then when I try to shut it down, after I click Start->Turn Off computer then I click any of the 3 options (Stand By, Turn off,Restart) it just do not respond, but at the sametime the windows is not frozen, I can still run other program which seems really odd. So I have to manually press the power button to shut it down. I might need to reinstall Windows.

I'm helping a friend with her new Mac Pro quad (latest model, 6g RAM, 1TB OEM drive, 2 extra 1TB Seagate Enterprise drives installed for storage, 24" ACD) and she can't shut it down now. Worked fine for the last week since she bought it all but now it won't. I've had her do all of the usual things like Permissions Repair and such, but still the problem exists. All software updates have been performed, everything works fine except for the shut down routine. There's not much software on the box, Photoshop CS4 and Bridge, and that's about it, other than the OEM Apple stuff. The Adobe apps have current updates, too.
Any ideas?try restarting with the command-option-p-r keys held down. Failing that, shut it down hard, then unplug everything...power..usb firewire...everything. Let it sit for 5min (that's prob longer than needed) and then restart. Failing that, call Apple tech support.

Mac Pro won't shut down reliably
I have an early 2009 Mac Pro and after upgrade to Lion I have problems with shutting it down. I have checked other discussions, my symptoms are little bit different than most I saw (it does not stay in the grey screen with spinning wheel):
- sometimes it will shut down normally (although it may take long time)
- in most cases it will start shutting down normally, goes to the gray screen, then to the black screen, I hear disks are powered down, only think I hear is the power fan which is still running - and it stays like that for hour or more without any change - untill I hold down the power button for a couple of seconds
The behaviour is the same when restarting.
I have already switched off the "recent items" in System preferences/General and when swithing off/restarting I do uncheck the "reopen windows..."
I have Windows 7 in Bootcamp on separate hard-disk and I do not have any similar issues when shutting down or restarting from Windows
Everything is up to date and the only HW which is added to the Mac is internal USB hub card (was added befor Lion upgrade and there were no issues with it). This is the only problem I am having - everything else works, the system is stable etc.
I have already tried to repair disk permissions, but there was no problem there either.
Many thanks for any help. TomasMany thanks, that worked - I unplugged everything from the USB hub and it switched off normally. Then I tried to put stuff back and it looks it was the mouse which was causing the problems - although I find it hard to understand why Thanks again for your help, Tom
