Ocfs performance

We have a rac of 3 servers. Currently we have the db running on just one server (rac1) and all works fine with good disk io times. When we start mounting the disks on another server ( rac2 ), things go downhill fast. We notice this performance hit right after mounting the first disk. That's even without having the rac2 oracle instance running, just an ocfs mount! The disk io times double on the rac1 instance and rac2 loses about 10% of the idle. (again - oracle isn't even started on this box yet).
How does ocfs work? Is there lots of constant polling of the disk going on? I have not found much tuning available for ocfs. We are oracle 9.2.0.4 on RHAS 3. Disk access is 2gig fiber to a Fiber SAN switch to disk controller w/512 cache with 15k rpm disks. We can't use ocfs with this type of performance. Any help is appreciated!

Perhaps in this site you can find that information:

  • OCFS slow performance in ImpDP

Did anyone encounter slow performance using ImpDP on OCFS ? We have Oracle RAC 10.2g running in window connecting SAN storage and was formatted to OCFS. We compared the performance of running the same import in Local Drive (NTFS) and SAN storage (OCFS) and found that the time required to complete the import is 10 times than Local Drive (NTFS). Any tuning or troubleshooting that we could do ? Thanks in Advance.

Not aware of ocfs installing automatically when installing CRS/RAC. But then have never used Windows as a production o/s for Oracle. never mind using it to run RAC.
ocfs2 is the latest version as per Oracle's [Open Source project list|http://oss.oracle.com/projects/]. Am not aware of "ocfs 9" for 9i or "ocfs 10" for 10g on Windows.
What do you use ocfs for? Do you have the OCR and voting disks on the file system as files? Do you use it for Oracle datafiles too?
As for the SAN infrastructure being "+okay+" - there's more than that to it. You need some kind of driver on the o/s to interface with the HBA card.. where cables (dual 2Gb fibre?) run into a SAN switch and where the SAN switch is connected to the physical storage system.
A faulty cable can cause performance issue (e.g. reducing the dual path to the SAN via 2 fibre channels to a single one). There could be errors on the switch. The driver could be problematic (older version). Etc.
So there is a number of layers, both s/w and h/w, to check before going "+okay+". Trust that your infrastructure team is jacked up in this regard.
One method to benchmark the import problem is to use NT's performance monitor and monitor the import process. Not exactly sure how you would do it dealing with threads (as a thread in the oracle.exe executable will be servicing the import process) - but this should give you a somewhat accurate figure of the I/Os per second and bytes and blocks per second that the process is reading from the ocfs file system (assuming that you are writing it via ASM to raw devices).
At the same time you can monitor the process for other potential performance bottlenecks.
The only other factor that comes to mind that can impact ocfs performance is the ocfs cluster's communication layer. Like CRS that uses Interconnect for communication between nodes, so does ocfs. On a Unix system this is configured in the +/etc/ocfs2/cluster.conf+ file - and lists the number of ocfs nodes in the cluster and the network interfaces/addresses used for communication.
If this network layer is already quite busy, using it for ocfs2's cluster communication could be a problem performance wise.
You can test this aspect by unmounting ocfs2 (and stopping the ocfs2 cluster communication/heartbeat s/w too) on all but one node and then running the import. As there is only a single node in the ocfs2 cluster, the communication with other nodes is pretty much made redundant.
Last comment - ocfs2 is not slow as a cluster file system. It does a pretty decent job. And its performance is directly related to the h/w it runs on, and also how it is configured. That said, it is not a s/w component that really plays a role in Oracle CRS and RAC as ASM should be used (and is the recommended option from Oracle). ocfs2 at best can serve as a cooked file system for the RAC cluster (only used via directory objects in Oracle).

  • Oracle Database on Oracle VM I/O  performance.

    Hi Experts,
I am planing to run Oracle Database on Oracle VM 3.2.x, but I am confusing about one thing that I hope find answer.
For a database on physical machine it is clear that Oracle Recommend to configure the storage contains the database as RAID 1+0 to have best I/O performance.
Now for a database on Virtual machine ...How we can apply this recommendation regarding the RAID level  ..since there is a layer between the database and the physical disk winch is the OCFS 2 file system ..and what about the I/O performance ???
    Thanks
    Aljaro

Well, as always… it depends on what you expect from your DB. OCFS2 is probably not the best suited storage for a high-load Oracle DB. You're probably best off running your storage on either dedicated FC LUNs from a SAN, that you configure into your guests as physical volumes or you take the iSCSI route and provide storage to your Oracle DBs that way.
In the end it all comes to down to you knowing your (expected) workload on the DB.

  • RAC 10g rel2: OCFS or ASM ?

    Hi all,
I have successfully installed a 10g_r2 RAC on Linux RH3, currently using ASM for all
database files (data, control, redo and flash_reco_area). But I don't like very much ASM,
I would prefer to have direct control on all files, so I am thinking about using OCFS.
Is there any significant performance difference between ASM and OCFS on RHEL3
    (Itanium 64 bit) ?
    Thanks and bye,
    Stefano

    Hi
WHat is the storage(shared between two nodes) used in your case .

  • RAW vs OCFS for Clusterware files

    Hello All!
I would like to know your experiences using ocfs or raw devices for clusterware files & voting disks in a RAC enviroment. Which do you think is better?, what are the advantages that you experienced using them, disadvantage, issues, etc.
Best Regards & Many Thanks for your help in advance.

using ocfs or raw devices for clusterware files
    Raw Devices
Linux provides raw device access with a pseudo filesystem which presents a file-like
interface to read and write actual disk partitions. Normally reads and writes to files
go through the Linux filesystem buffer cache; however, raw device IO bypasses the
buffer cache and directly deals with the underlying hardware devices. There is one
    raw device for one partition.
OCFS is Oracle’s open-source filesystem available on various platforms. This is an
extent-based (an extent is a variable contiguous space) filesystem which is currently
intended for Oracle datafiles and Oracle RAC (real application clusters). In terms
of the file interface it provides to applications, OCFS balances performance and
manageability by providing functionality that is in-between the functionality
provided by raw devices and typical filesystems. While retaining the performance
    of raw devices.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/pdf/Linux-FS-Performance-Comparison.pdf
    performance??? ... i think ... not different
What should you use ... OCFS or RAW ?
    It depends on your design;)
if you have plan to share ORACLE_HOME... use ocfs2 and then you can share OCR + VOTE on OCFS.
if you have plan to use ASM... I think you don't need to use OCFS, you can make OCR + VOTE on raw devices.
By the way... if you use ASM and you don't want to perform on ocfs2 ... use raw ...
    Good Luck

  • ASM, rebalancing, 3rd party storage and performance

Hi all, I have some questions for the storage experts and I need your opinion about:
    1. Which type of ASM is better for the rebalancing perspective (and obviously the performance perspective), but considering the availability as well: Unprotected, 2-way (normal) or 3-way (high)? I know 3-way is the worst because we have to multiply by 3 the space of the database, but has great availability. Which of these do you use in your company?
    2. If someone is using EMC/Fujitsu/Hitachi, do you use Unprotected or 2-way (normal) in ASM?
    3. Which type of rebalancing (from zero to 11) is the best to use, considering the overall performance , I mean, when you have to add a new disk, ASm will perform the rebalancing.
    4. Which is better to use: ASM Cluster File System or Oracle Cluster File System ?
    Thanks.

I know 3-way is the worst because we have to multiply by 3 the space of the database, but has great availability. Which of these do you use in your company?Wrong question IMO. You do not choose normal or high redundancy based on which rebalances the fastest. You make that choice wrt to redundancy and high availability.
The best in this respect is high redundancy. 3 storage servers. Fully redundant I/O fabric layer (3+ I/O paths from each server to each and every LUN). Which means you can loose 2 storage arrays and most of your I/O fabric layer (switches and cables). And the storage layer left will still be able to be effectively used for ASM and the RAC database will not even notice that this destruction happened.
However, this best is not always feasible ito existing architecture, budget and so on. So that drives the requirements and needs and what the best is to meet that.
    2. If someone is using EMC/Fujitsu/Hitachi, do you use Unprotected or 2-way (normal) in ASM?That again depends on redundancy levels. If the SAN provides a RAID5 or RAID10 LUN, should you mirror it?
This may makes sense if you have 2 SANS. And with each SAN implementing RAID5, you mirror (via ASM) across SANs.
It makes less sense if you use ASM to mirror (on the same SAN) 2 RAID5 LUNs.
You also may have no choice. For example, migrating a high redundancy diskgroup from a storage server (no redundancy by server), to a SAN (RAID5/10 redundancy by SAN). When migrating ASM diskgroups, you cannot reduce redundancy. You cannot make a high redundancy diskgroup a normal redundancy diskgroup. Or a normal one, an externally redundant diskgroup.
In such a case you normal/high redundancy diskgroup on the new SAN (with its RAID5/10 LUNs), still need its own mirrors in ASM.
    3. Which type of rebalancing (from zero to 11) is the best to use, considering the overall performance , I mean, when you have to add a new disk, ASm will perform the rebalancing. How busy is the I/O layer? What production processing is running? How will this be impacted by using power 11? How soon does the old (dropped) disks need to be physically decommissioned? Etc.
There is no single correct answer to what load balancing power setting to use.
    4. Which is better to use: ASM Cluster File System or Oracle Cluster File System ?For what purpose?
For RAC database purposes only? ACFS. As OCFS adds another set of kernel drivers, kernel services, and another Interconnect (ocfs needs its own IP Interconnect that is typically run over the public IP network of the cluster, and that can be/should be run over the private IP network of the cluster).
Why add more moving parts (ocfs) when ACFS is available?
Then again - why use ACFS when you are not running Grid Infrastructure? Or why makes your cluster file system dependent on Grid/CRS to be running (with ASM), when OCFS's moving parts are significantly fewer and less complex?
As with most things in Information Technology - there is no overall "best". The "best" depends on a number of factors, and the business requirements that need to be met.

  • OCFS version update?

    Hi all!
As I can see, open source version of OCFS i 1.0-2, while on metalink you can find 1.0-7. Will, any time soon, 1.0-7 will be availible like source to be compiled on custom kernels?
Some versions of krenel are more stable/feature rich then those "default" from instalation, so recompilation & custom bilding kernel process is nessesary.
As I can see/read, from 1.0-2 to 1.0-7 is a big step - major flaws are corected & there is better performance gain.
So, it would be nice to be able to use newer version ... but when?

  • How to migrate raw device to OCFS in the share disk?

I have a 10gr2 RAC env on two nodes and use raw device, I want to migrate the raw device to OCFS but I can't find the doc to help me? anyone can give me a hand? thankx~~

    Hi terbas
Not sure that this is the correct section to ask that question, but anyway herewith the way to do it:
Creating raw devices is the same process as creating a Logica Volume in AIX using smitty. You have to define Volume Groups an hdisk devices. The difference is in ths type of LV used, whe creating JFS FS you used to select jfs/jfs2 types, while whe creating raw devices you can assign a label as "raw" and the use the raw device. Sample of creating a Raw Device:
mklv -t raw VGName <Size in LP Units>
When creating raw devices is good to have some consideration about placement of the logical volume in order to achieve som extra performance, remember that data placed near to center i better accessed than data placed on the edge of the disk.
From a guide i used to configure AIX systems for Oracl installations:
    "RAW Device Interface
The RAW device interface allows for the least amount of overhea you can achieve with UNIX I/Os. When using the RAW devic interface, UNIX simply assigns a section of the disk to each RA device. This portion of the disk is contiguous; accesses to i bypass all disk caching and file-system overhead.

  • OCFS kernel panic!

    Cut to the chase:
2 Dell, 6650, EMC Clariion CX400 SAN, qla2300_6x fiber hba
PowerPath (3.x), Navisphere, etc etc. Configured by dell
All OCFS supporting tools installed, e.25enterprise kernel installed, no modifications.
I installed the OCFS rpms, direct from Oracle. On one machine (call it 'A') using /etc/init.d/ocfs start works fine, the other it doesn't ('B', Failed to recognize enterprise kernel...go figure). load_ocfs works on B, though. ocfstool on both works once B is up to speed. Now the problems begin, ONE time I had both A and B mounted to /dev/emcpowera1 and /dev/emcpowera2, both able to touch files, delete, etc. I decided to reboot A to test the functionality after a reboot, to be sure everything initialized properly. At this point I bring up ocfstool and tell it to mount /dev/emcpowera1 and it crashed with a kernel panic from OCFS.
Since then, no matter what I do, B is off try to mount A to emcpowera1, crash...anything I do crashes from OCFS kernel module.
    Thoughts, suggestions, HELP!
    -Dave

its a cluster filesystem. for better performance, we obviously want to use the network to do internode communication. if you have crashes it would be good to give pointers, or if it's serious call support or so

  • Quote Report - Performance

I have created a quote report with narratives around the opportunity, opportunity-product, and account information. The report contains a pivot table.
I'm getting very hit or miss performance results on the report. Sometimes the report runs faster for all opportunities compared to when its prompted with an opty id from a web link.
Any thoughts? There doesn't seem to be one column that makes a difference.
Also this is not an analytical report as the quotes need to be generated same day.

    Hi Shaik,
Please remove all the join select queries and use 'for all entries' varaiant of the select query. Check whether you can create and use indexes in ur queries.

  • IS NOT NULL and performance

I have a performance issue with a query - it would be something like -
    select col1,col2, sum(col3), get_val(col_4)
    from table1
    where
    get_val(col_4) is not null
    group by col1,col2, get_val(col_4)
I have simplified this but it is something similar. This works great - performance is great. Now I commented out the where clause as I needed to populate null values - and that's it the query does not retrieve the resultset - it keeps running forever. With the where clause it comes back in 60 seconds. There is only one row out of 560 rows that has null value for col_4 which i need to display.
    Any help is appreciated.

The only difference I notice between the two sqls is HASH(UNIQUE) -
with IS NOT NULL in where clause -
    SELECT STATEMENT     ALL_ROWS     1598     1     209
    HASH(UNIQUE)          1598     1     209
    HASH(GROUP BY)          1598     1     209
When is not null is removed from the where clause -
    SELECT STATEMENT     ALL_ROWS     1598     1     206
    HASH(GROUP BY)          1598     1     206
I'm guessing that the index is being used in the first scenario and not in the second. Any idea/suggestion as to how to over come this?
    Thanks

  • Issues with WebForm performance

    Hi,
We had migrated a new application from UAT to PROD and we encounter webform performance issues with the following actions..
After login, the first form you open it is
always slow. After this you can switch from one form to another without a
    delay.
Then once you change any data – the next time
you access a form it gets delayed.
The point to be noted is, it doesnt have any performance issues in the UAT environment and the configuration settings, essbase cache settings are all the same. We did try to move the EPM system to a new server to see if this is a hardware issue but no luck, the performance issues still exist. The consumption of the CPU/memory has been checked and it is proved that the form opening delay has nothing to do with lack of memory.
The JVM head settings is set up at 4GB which is infact higher than that of the UAT environment(2GB).
runs on Windows server2008,11.1.2.1.600 EPM serve, has planning, reporting, foundation on one server (32GB ram) and essbase on another server (32GB ram). Any help is appreciated.

I already replied there but it seems no moderator is willing to approve my reply so it never shows up.
So I'll try replying in here instead:
I never thought it could be an emulator issue, I thought I had done something wrong to begin with. So I take having performance issues with tiled layer is not a common problem I suppose?
I'm using MOTODEV SDK platform, A1200 model (motorola).

  • Apple DVI to Video Adapter performance issues in Lion

I'm an active Apple DVI to Video Adapter user for a couple of years already and everything worked perfectly well until I've upgraded to Lion.
Everything on my TV screen is lagging now, even mouse pointer, and there is no change to watch any movie like that.
Does anyone have the same issue? Maybe someone could give me an advice of what could I do in order to improve graphics performance on TV screen using Apple DVI to Video Adapter? I'm using late 2007 MBP with 8600M GT video adapter.

I am having the exact same problem.  I have a late 2007 MBP. I use it everyday where I teach.  I use the adapter to project on a large white screen using S-Video.  SInce the Lion update, it is very slow and has even completely crashed my computer a few times.  I realize the MBP is getting a bit dated, but the difference between Snow Leopard & Lion is remarkable.

  • Vendor performance report

    hai
how to create an vendor performance report which display purchase order issued to a vendor, material supplied delivery times, payment terms, prices during a period of time.
for this report what are the tables and fields we have to use pls give me sample report..
                  thank you..

    Hi,
Against the RFQ's vendor submit quotations and the Based on the RFQ's data we have to compare the different Vendors with the respective data like terms and prices
Fetch the data of all RFQ's from EKKO and EKPO tables
and take the EKKO-KNUMV field and pass to KONV table and fetch the different prices based on the Condition types  for each RFQ and put it in a tabular format  and compare.
    see the sample code

  • FI-CA events to improve performance

    Hello experts,
Does anybody use the FI-CA events to improve the extraction performance for datasources 0FC_OP_01 and 0FC_CI_01 (open and cleared items)?
It seems that this specific exits associated to BW events have been developped especially to improve performance.
Any documentation, guide should be appreciate.
    Thanks.
    Thibaud.

Thanks to all for the replies
    @Sybrand
Please answer first whether the column is stored in a separate lobsegment.
No. Table,Index,LOB,LOB index uses the same TS. I missed adding this point( moving to separate TS) as part of table modifications.
    @Hemant
There's a famous paper / blog post about CLOBs and Database Flashback. If I find it, I'll post the URL.
Is this the one you are referring to
    http://laimisnd.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/lobs-and-flashback-database-performance/
By moving the CLOB column to different block size , I will test the performance improvement it gives and will share the results.
We dont need any data from this table. XML file contains details about finger prints and once the application server completes the job , XML data is deleted from this table.
So no need of backup/recovery operations for this table. Client will be able to replay the transactions if any problem occurs.
    @Billy
We are not performing XML parsing on DB side. Gets the XML data from client -> insert into table -> client selects from table -> Upon successful completion of the Job from client ,XML data gets deleted.
Regarding binding of LOB from client side, will check on that side also to reduce round trips.
By changing the blocksize, I can keep db_32K_cache_size=2G and keep this table in CACHE. If I directly put my table to CACHE, it will age out all other operation from buffer which makes things worse for us.
This insert is part of transaction( Registration of a finger print) and this is the only statement taking time as of now compared to other statements in the transaction.
    Thanks,
    Arun
