Oci8 driver for Oracle 8.1.7 on RedHat 7.0

Hi,
I have an installed, patched and running Oracle 8.1.7 Database on RedHat 7.0.
Exeverything works fine so far, the only problem are remote jdbc connects.
They work with the thin-dirvers, but not with oci.
The error is:
java.sql.SQLException: ORA-06401: NETCMN: invalid driver designator
(after changing the connector from thin to oci)
Java is 1.3 with the classes12.jar.
Any suggestions?

Do you see a folder lib32 instead. Otherwise you will have to install Oracle
client on the machine to use OCI.

    Hello
I had installed oracle 8.17 client on my machine.
Suddenly, my datasource with "MS driver for oracle" seems not to be working.
    I uninstalled 8.17 and installed 8.16.
No matter, what I do, I cannot get the datasource setup with "MS driver for oracle" work
    Anyone has similar experience
    -Aswath

What error message are you seeing? I've never seen any conflict between the Oracle and Microsoft drivers.
You could try downloading the latest version of the MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) from Microsoft <http://www.microsoft.com/data>. That will have the latest version of the Microsoft driver.
I'm assuming that you have already tried deleting and re-creating your DSN. If you haven't, that would be a good first step.

    Hi Satish
It could be an issue with the driver.
You can try with the OLEDB n Oracle native connection to test if the issue persists.
Also you can refer to the [Troubleshooting Database Connectivity for Crystal Reports|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/index?rid=/library/uuid/d05b3bb7-0f28-2c10-4ea3-84dbdc4e414e&overridelayout=true]

As far as I know, all Oracle JDBC drivers are meant to be backward compatible.
According to the table on the following Web page, the latest Oracle JDBC driver can be used with Oracle 9.2.0.x DBMS.

The only oracle JDBC driver that can run with JDK 1.2.x is in the
OTN download area and is named "816SDK for JDK 1.2"
it will work with the JDK 1.2.X using the JDBC 1.22 spec from JDK
    1.1.X.
IT DOES NOT PROVIDE THE FULL JDBC 2.0 FEATURES/ FUNCTIONALITY
THAT ARE INCLUDED IN THE JDK 1.2.X CLASSES.
    you're using a jdk 1.2.x/jdbc 2.0 feature -- which is anticipated
to be included in the 816 driver later this year -- it's not in
the "816SDK" JDBC driver you're using now..
816SDK can be thought of as stepping stone between 815 using jdk
    1.1.x and 816 supporting jdk 1.1.x and 1.2.x.
i think of it as "8.1.5 and a half" to avoid the naming confusion
    between "816sdk" and "816" .

  • Result Sets with the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle

    Howdy all.
I have an Oracle database that I have migrated from MSSQL2K. My front end is mostly VB, and I have many (hundreds) DLL's that use ADO to access the database and execute stored procedures in the database. I cannot seem to get result sets from the Oracle procedures. I have tried passing a SYS_REFCURSOR as an IN OUT parameter, and I have tried returning a SYS_REFCURSOR in a function. The Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle does not seem to handle the ref cursors. If I use the Oracle ODBC driver, then ref cursors are handled sort of magically. Just like the result sets are in MSSQL with the SQL Server ODBC Driver.
The question that I would like to pose to anybody willing to answer is this: Is there any way to use the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle without changing the way I do the database access (using ADO connection/command/recordset objects)? I need the same DLL's to work on top of both MSSQL and Oracle.
I know that what I want to do is possible using the Oracle ODBC driver, but this will take some major changes to some of my DB components. I am trying to stay away from this, but it looks like I am going to have to go that route - that is unless somebody wows me with a good answer to this post.

As you are using Microsoft driver which works in XP and does not on Win 2003 you should post this on microsoft forum.

  • Mix Local and Global Transaction using XA Driver for Oracle

    Hi all,
We are trying to use a XA Driver which can support both local as well as global
transaction. We tried using the Weblogic jDriver (XA Driver) type 2 that comes
along with Weblogic installation but unfortunaltely it cannot mix local as well
    as global transaction.
Please let me know in case we have any XA JDBC driver for Oracle Database which
supports both local and global transaction together.
    Thnx,
    Kumar
    Environment:
    Weblogic 8.1 server
    Database used : Oracle8i

Most database drivers can support local and global transactions, with some
    restrictions.
The JDBC spec has been changed to require compliant drivers to let the
    application
know if they try to start a global transaction while a local transaction has
    not been
completed (or vice verse). So most of the database drivers have been
    changed to enforce
this restriction (breaking a lot of code that is out there).
