OCR'd Acrobat 8 pdf's not compatible with Preview? (s p a c e s in words)

I recently came across an odd problem. When I use Acrobat 8's OCR function to turn an image pdf into a readable pdf, I get results that, at first, look fine: selecting text works, copy/pasting text from acrobat to other apps also works fine.
However, when I open this pdf in apple's Preview, then select text, then copy/paste it, I get garbled text: words with spaces between each character, etc.
This problem makes pdf's almost completely unusable to me. I cannot copy/paste bits of a pdf, I can't index the documents (either through spotlight, or another app I use, DEVONthink).
Now, saving as acrobat 7 does not solve this problem. Actually using acrobat 7 does work, however. I don't want to resort to that because acrobat 7 is quite a bit slower (due to it being for PowerPC) and this is particularly noticeable during something as memory-intensive as OCR.
Anyways, I can imagine this being a problem that needs to be fixed on the apple side rather than the Adobe side. furthermore, the more people start producing ocr'd pdf files in acrobat 8, the bigger this problem will become.
If anyone can help me find a way to save 'Preview-compatible' pdf's from within acrobat 8, that would at least be a temporary workable solution for me!

I use PDFs I've created on my macs (both have 10.5.1) on several windows XP machines at work. Apple's PDF solutions are different from Adobe, so the compatibility does not have to do with the availability of Adobe software. Still, one option would be to get "Adobe PDF" installed as a printer (not sure where it comes from -- maybe Reader, or with the CS3 suite) and then use that to print to PDF instead of using Apple's system technology. Still, it should be concerning that the system's PDFs are not being created properly. Do the PDFs open properly on other Macs? Have you tried multiple PCs?

I would recommend Acrobat 10.  You can find more details as well as a trial at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html?promoid=JOLIR.  It should be noted though that Acrobat 5 is too old of a version to qualify for the upgrade price I am sorry.

  • Adobe Acrobat 6.0 not compatible with windows 7

    Hello,
Some years ago I bought Adobe Acrobat 6.0 which I placed on my old computer. Now I have a new computer with windows 7 and the acrobat 6.0 version apears not compatible with this windows version. Does anyone know a solution?
    Thanks in advance.

If you have Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate, you can download Windows XP Mode and attempt to install Adobe Acrobat 6 in the virtual environment. Windows XP Mode uses Windows Virtual PC to run a full Windows XP Professional 32 bit environment virtually, and it is a free download. A limitation you may encounter is that the PDF printer will not be accessible from your Windows 7 programs, only from programs which are installed in the Windows XP Mode environment.
This subject has been discussed on several forums, and while Acrobat version 6 does install and work for some users, the PDF printer does not install on Windows 7. Version 9 was the first version which was compatible with Windows 7, so if this is critical to you, you should consider upgrading to the latest version of Acrobat.

  • Mac PDF's not compatible with Windows

Has anyone had a problem creating PDF files in OS 10.5.1 that can be read by others? Specifically I have created PDF's both by "printing" and by saving as PDF using Preview, and the files open fine on a Mac (using Preview at at least), but when I send these files to a Windows PC they cannot be opened by using either Acrobat Reader 8 or ABBY PDF Creator, both indicating that the files are corrupted. I am assuming at this point that this may have something to do with the fact that there is no version of Acrobat or Reader yet compatible with OS 10.5 . Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.

  • Adobe Acrobat 5.0 not compatible with Windows Vista

On installing this software on my new Windows Vista, incompatibility message says I need to install kernel-mode print driver. Where can I get this from. No luck with the Adobe website technical support!

Then you will need to purchase an upgrade to the current version 8.1.
Note that Acrobat Standard would be a downgrade; to retain all your
current features you'd need Acrobat Professional.
Note that there was no product called Acrobat Writer, if you want to
be exact. And you would normally have only one of "Acrobat" and
"Acrobat Reader". To make it even more confusing, "Acrobat Reader" was
    renamed "Adobe Reader".

  • Acrobat 8 Pro not compatible with Win 7 Pro 64

When I changed from Win XP Pro to Win 7 Pro I could not transfer Acrobat 8 Pro. Adobe Support just informed me that Acrobat 8 Pro was not designed for Win 7 and that's it. This was pretty frustrating and gave me the opportunity to search the market. I am going to switch to PDF Suite that is coequal to Acrobat but hundreds of times favorable in price!

Support gave you the correct answer. The new underpinnings of Windows 7 makes it impossible for Acrobat 8 to function properly. It should not surprise you that new OSs require new software. Acrobat 9 is very nice software, you can get an special upgrade price from 8 to 9. Acrobat 10 is likely to be available real soon now. There are many programs available to create pdfs. Office can do so natively. If that is all you need then Acrobat may not be for you. However, for some there is nothing quite like Acrobat.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro not compatible with Vista Ultimate

I am running Vista Ultimate and have Acrobat 9 Pro. When I print and choose "Adobe PDF Converter" as my printer I get the following error:
    Interactive services dialog detection
    Program(s) of devices(s) requesting attention.
Message title: Test Page.pdf Adobe Acrobat Pro
    Program path: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat9.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.dll
    Received: November 15 -08, 9:23:58 PM
This problem happens because of partial incompatibility with Windows Vista. Please contact the program of device manufacturer(s) for more information.
Once I acknowledge this the new .pdf file appears.
Do I have a setting wrong?
    Thanks

I am having the same problem in Windows 7, did Adobe ever come up with a solution.
We recently upgraded our systems to Windows 7.  Since the upgrade, the 'interactive services detection' dialog box opens every time I create a PDF file (I am using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro).  Is there any way to correct this?  Acrobat used to open when the file was created (WinXP), now I get the 'isd' box.  It creates the file, but the dialog box comes up asking me to view the message.  It takes me away from my desktop to view the file (goes to black screen and then displays the file) and I have to close the file in order to get back to my desktop (black screen then back to desktop).  I was able to disable it by going into printer preferences and unchecking 'view adobe pdf results', but I would really like to be able to view my PDF's when they are created.   (We had Adobe Acrobat Reader X installed initially on the system and then installed the full version of Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, using AAP9 as the default program for pdf's.  I don't remember if this problem has been occurring since we installed the full version or after Reader X was uninstalled (program was acting funny, so we uninstalled.)  Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • Long Term Signature & Advanced functionality of Reader (measurement) not compatible with the PDF/A

    { 28 0 obj }

Long-Term validation feature in PDF is not compatible with PDF/A as you have already found out. In Acrobat XI LTV info is automatically added to the signed PDF when a PDF is saved again (after signing). You need to turn this feature off (it is ON by default). Go to Edit->Preferences->Signatures->Verification->More and change the radio button for "Automatically add verification information for signed PDFs" to "Never".

  • Acrobat reader not compatible with windows 8

  • Adobe Acrobat 5 not compatible with Windows 8

When I try to open up files saved in Adobe Acrobat 5 my new computer with Windows 8 gives me a message that they are not compatible with Windows 8. What do I need to do to be able to open these files on my new computerwth Windows 8?

Did you install reader or such on Win8? AA5 is not even compatible with Win7, though it can be made to work with work arounds for the 32-bit version. I suspect you also have a 64-bit system, which I think is totally incompatibile with AA5. Download the Reader XI and try to open the PDFs with that. I suspect they will open fine.
If you want to create PDFs, you will need to purchase AA XI.

  • Acrobat Pro 9 is not compatible with Windows 7

Acrobat Pro 9 is not compatible with Windows 7.  How do I upgrade my version?
    Thanks,
    John

Where did you get that information (other than Win 7 is not listed in the compatibility list)? I have been using AA9 on Windows 7 for several years (it is a 32-bit system). Did you try to install it or some other issue crop up? You may need to be sure you install the updates, but otherwise it should work. Even folks with AA8 have been successful on Win 7 (at least that is what they have reported), though they are likely to have some minor problems at times.
My Win7 came with Acrobat 9 when Win 7 first came out and has worked fine. If you have upgraded OFFICE to 2010 or later, then you would only be able to print, not use PDF Maker.
That being said, it is still a good idea to go ahead and upgrade. AA9 is the oldest version qualifying for the upgrade to AAXI.

  • How can I do when my acrobat professional 6.01 is not compatible with WIN7 system?

how can I do when my acrobat professional 6.01 is not compatible with WIN7 system?

If you are lokking for loopholes or workarounds - they don't exist. Your only option is to buy a new license of Acrobat XI. Of course, depending on what functionality you need, there are enough alternative, cheaper tools to create and edit PDFs or even free tools. Most of them won't deal with forms or otehr advanced features, though, but as long as you only want to convert your Word files to PDFs, the'll do the trick and you don't need Acrobat.
