OCS to Lync 2013, move all users over before client deployed?

Hello, quick question hoping someone can answer...
We've deployed Lync 2013 and are migrating about 2000 users from OCS across many branch offices, going branch-by-branch.
Is there any downside to moving ALL 2000 users over to the Lync pool before they have the Lync client deployed to their site? They would still be using Communicator until their site receives the Lync install. I know Communicator works when connecting to
the Lync pool so I'm guessing this should be OK.
The problem we're seeing during this transition phase is when an employee travels to a site that's had Lync client deployed but the employee is still on the Communicator pool because their primary site hasn't been upgraded yet, and are thus unable to sign-in
to Lync.

I would agree with Anthony,
The basic features works with the Communicator clients but when it comes to conferencing users will face a lot of problems, also  a problem as been identified during such scenario is when users homed on the lync pool and signing in using the OC client
experience a weird behavior when their contact lists disappear, then it appears again when logging using a lync client.
as a resume.
If you are obliged to use the OC client please make sure that it is patched with the latest updated released.
as a best practice move to Lync client as soon as possible.

  • Lync 2013 DNS requirements in a multi tenant deployment

    Hi All,
We are planning to deploy lync 2013 enterprise in a two site (pool) deployment. Both the sites are separated by a WAN link.
Our primary SIP domain is xyz.com
    For site A, we have
    1) A pool name siteApool.xyz.com
    2) 2 FEs name siteAfe001.xyz.net and siteAfe002.xyz.net
    3) A edge for external access siteAedge
    For site B, we have
    1) A pool name siteBpool.xyz.com
    2) A FE name siteBfe001.xyz.net
Site B users will use the edge at site A for external access.
As per the r&d we know that following records are required for external access
    Access/webcon/av.xyz.com
    _sip_tls.xyz.com
Apart from that we also need following service URL records as well
    dialin.xyz.com
    meet.xyz.com
    admin.xyz.com
    sip.xyz.com
Our problem starts here and because we only manage xyz.net dns not the xyz.com dns (its is our public dns), which rises two questions -
    1) As both the internal and external users are going to use same service url records (dailin/meet/admin/sip.xyz.com), how can we make sure that when a user uses lync on office LAN the service urls will be resolved by xyz.net dns and will not get routed to
xyz.com (public dns) for dns resolution.
    2) As i told we have a two site deployment and we need common service url records (dailin/meet/admin/sip.xyz.com) to be used by user at both site , how can i make sure that when a user at site A ask for dailin/meet/admin/sip.xyz.com it gets routed to
siteApool.xyz.com and when a user at site B ask for dailin/meet.xyz.com it gets routed to siteBpool.xyz.com. We need such functionality to save unnecessary WAN traffic.
Please help me to figure out the most suitable design.
    Thanks,
    Mohit Taneja

    Hi Mohit Taneja,
    Some additional information.
About the DNS requirements, you could refer to the following article.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398082.aspx
About the network traffic, it depends on where exactly the user is hosted. Central site does not decide the media traffic . If user is hosted in site-B and organize the meeting , media has
to travel via WAN if you don’t have edge server in site-B.
    Best regards,
    Eric

  • Lync 2013 client is deployed but user accounts are not migrated from OCS to Lync 2013 Server - how to open Lync meetings automatically in the Lync Web Plug-in

We have in our enterprise the following scenario:
    1 - Lync 2013 client is installed
2 - User accounts are not migrated to Lync 2013 Server, users are using Office Communicator as their main tool
3 - Users receive Lync 2013 meeting requests but when try to access them, Lync 2013 client launches and shows error. Users will need to open the browser and paste the URL to the address bar but this still open
4 - We cannot use the workaround of adding "?SL=1" to the Lync 2013 meeting URL as the user base is large and manual workaround is not accepted
5 - Question: is there any automated way, via egistry key or GPO setting, so that users temporarily (until their accounts are migrated to Lync 2013 server) can bypass Lync 2013 client completely and automatically open all Lync 2013 meetings
on the browser, using Lync Web Plug-in?

    Thanks for the response,
First, I should have mentioned clearly that users have Office Communicator 2007 client and Lync 2013 client installed in their machines. Their accounts are not migrated yet to Lync 2013 server.
Second, we are using IE9 and IE10. The issue is that users CAN join Lync 2013 meetings with their browsers but have to paste the URL manually to browser and add "?SL=1" otherwise, if they just click at the "Join Online Meeting" or "Join
Lync Meeting" URL it launches Lync 2013 client which shows error because is not configured yet, as they are using OCS client and migrating slowly to Lync 2013 server.
Is there a Group Policy setting or a registry key from Microsoft that can be turned on to these users machines and make will all Lync meeting requests to be opened in IE browser instead of Lync 2013 client. We need a way to ignore
Lync 2013 client until user accounts are migrated to Lync 2013 Server. Manually typing URLs is not an option in a big organization, can't explain thousands of users of different levels what to do.
We are regretting the decision not to separate Lync 2013 from Office 2013 package we deployed recently. If Lync 2013 is uninstalled then all Lync meeting requests are opened in browser without an issue.

  • Lync 2013 for 8000 user for 6 locations - Topology question

    Hello everyone,
I have a project for Lync on 6 locations (Central site and 5 other branches) and would like to like to ask some questions regarding the topology of servers.
What I initially think would be required for those users is as following:
1- 2 Pools (Central pool will have 3 Lync FE Enterprise) in the central site)  and another pool will have at least 1 FE Enterprise In each branch..
2- 1 SQL BE +  Mirror + Witness for all the Front ends.
3- ONE SQL for Archiving and Monitoring
4- One SQL for Persistent chat pool
5- One Mediation server or a Pool with 2 Mediation servers.
6- One Edge Pool with 2 Edge Servers.
The questions that I would like to ask regarding this topology is as following
1- Would the front end servers distribution as I stated be convenient for such situation to avoid any issues with connectivity or HA ? And do pool pairing between the two pools for HA?
2- Would one Backend SQL with Mirror and Witness be enough for all front ends in all locations considering there's a 100 MB MPLS connection between all locations.? or is it better if I deploy SQL BE for each site?
3- In case of Edge Pool. how would the Public IPs distribution and the public/Internal DNS configuration be with the presence of Hardware and DNS load balancers?
    I'm curious in things like
A- How many Public IPs would there be?
B- What are the Configuration of the Public DNS be like ? e.g. SIP A Name would point to how many IPs.
C- How would the Hardware load balancer configuration be like ?
4- Would a hardware load balancer be required to handle the traffic of all those numbers of users? or would one reverse proxy be enough?
5- Customer required disaster site deployment so Is it possible to deploy Lync on another data center and do Pool pairing ?
I would appreciate your suggestions and comments.
    Thanks
    Mohammed JH

Does that mean I will have to install SQL Backend in all 6 locations for FEs?
    - Each pool of Enterprise Edition FE's will require a SQL backend database.
Do you mean I'll have to do the failover manually by powershell?
    - Yes, if acceptable you could use the resiliency built in to Lync server
since you have multiple pools. If you loose SQL in Lync 2013 your front ends will maintain most functionality, if you loose an entire Lync pool PSTN calling can automatically fail over, however you will need to run a couple of PowerShell commands to fail the
    entire pool over.
    I have 6 different locations,
so I think this means i'll install 6 different pools with one FE in each location and do Pool pairing between 3 of them with the other 3. do you think this make sense?
    - Ideally each pool should
have 3 FE's. For the smaller sites
I would look at using Lync Standard Edition. Standard Edition supports up for 5000 users on hardware or about 2500 on VM and it run's SQL locally. You only really need to use Enterprise Edition
where you require the pool to be highly available.
Does this mean that I need 6 Edges with each 3 Public IPs on each one? Can't I just deploy 1 pool with 2 Edges on it and associate
them with all the pools .. I haven't tried that before to be honest.
    - Yes you can do that. I would deploy 2 edge pools in 2 different sites with1 or 2 servers in each. This will give you failover options
if you have an entire site go down.
And btw I wonder how would the SIP, AV and Webconf names point to ....
in case of all those IPs I think they will be configured on the load balancer right?
    - Youd have the public IP's on the load balancer, then you can use private
IP's on the edge servers and load balance across the pool.
I read microsoft says it's recommended for the HTTPS but with the number of users that will be enabled for Lync you mean that the Reverse proxy should handle all the traffic? I will be using IIS ARR should that be enough?
    - Each pool will have its own web services that need a reverse proxy so you could use IIS ARR in each location. Is that what you were thinking, or was the plan to centrally locate the reverse proxy for all pools?
Hope its all becoming clearer :)

  • Lync 2013 Contacts - Remote users

    Hi,
Almost ready to roll out Lync 2013 but...
Most of our company is spread out across the Internet so we'll want to have the GalContacts files to download automatically to each user.
Currently I find that that remote users are not getting the GalContacts files, is that an administrative setting in Lync?
    Thanks
    Mike
Edit: When I monitor a connection in Fiddler on a remote computer I see no request for the address book like I see for those on the LAN.

    Hi,
External Lync users download Address Book through Reverse Proxy.
So please double check Reverse Proxy configuration. External Lync users will use the External Web Services FQDN to download address book, so please double check if you enter the correct External Services FQDN.
Also, double check if all needed SAN added in Reverse Proxy certificate.

  • Can't Log In with Lync 2013 Windows 8 App over VPN

    Howdy,
I've downloaded the Lync 2013 App to Windows 8.1.  When I type in my work email, I can't sign in.  I get that the server isn't available or doesn't support Lync.
    The error is attached.
I can't find a forum for the Lync App itself so I'm hoping to be redirected or since this has to be an easy question, someone might answer it here.
I'm logged in on our VPN and I'm working around this issue right now with RDP to my desktop and signing in to Lync 2010 there.  This is for the purpose of doing my class this next week from home and showing Yep, I'm really available over Lync.
What is really desired is to get Lync on my remote machine working but there's no real Settings page on the App.
Apparently it does pick up the VPN and tries to sign me in:
However, there's not much of a way to configure anything.  I can't find a "Settings" page. Tried uninstall/reinstall to see if I didn't fat finger something.
Lync 2010 is set up on company laptops to work over VPN correctly from home so I can't imagine it's this hard.  I think the "oversimplified" approach of just putting in the email address and (I'm theorizing) letting Lync detect VPN or not,
can I log in, etc. or whatever it does, this isn't working.  And of course, it's Encapsulated. :)
OK, I have a work around, it's not a do or die issue here.  I'll RDP to my desktop, sign in and Lync will show me available.  I'll set my location as Home during the hours of the class.
But ... it's always REALLY annoying when you KNOW it's a simple setup procedure and if that's just found ...
    Thanks for any help.

  • How to move all clips over

Is it possible to move all audio/video clips over to insert a new clip for example.  Right now, I'm highlighting all the clips and dragging them.
For the above, is there a way to get more precise by using the keyboard?

    Thats weird.
Why would anyone want that behaviour for a ripple insert edit.
When I use it (CS4) ....it inserts the clip and ripples the  clips to the right..towards the right.  ie later in the program.
I dont understand why it would want to change the start time of a program.

  • OCS 2007 Enabling Federation for all users globally

I've set up federation in OCS 2007 and it's working. The problem now is I need to make enable it en mass for my users.
I've searched all properties and can't find where I enable it for all users. The setting I'm looking for is equivalent to going in the users properties > Other Settings [configure] > and checking Enable Federation and Enable Remote access.
I'd hate to go through 300+ users to check this. Does anyone know where I can set this globally?
    Thanks.

What are the odds of that...answered my own question.
I right clicked the users folder > configure users and it walked me through checking those options.
Hope it saves someone some time :)

  • Enable save for all users in rich client document defaultly for all users

    Hi,
Is there a option to enable save for all users in a rich client document defaultly for all users across the company. As the users who are creating reports are forgetting to check the box before sending the rich client document to others. Kindly let me know if you have any suggestions on this.
    Thanks,
    Karthik

I'd suggest that is is where your BO folder structure comes in. You can export from Rich Client to any folder that you have permissions to access - some sort of collaboration folder system would potentially be better and more secure than sending unsecured reports via email. If your IT security team found out that you were removing document security, I doubt they'd be impressed!
You can't do the default save for all users, simple as that (it's bad practice anyway, which is probably why you can't). While it's not the answer that you want to hear, it is the correct one.

  • Lync 2013 mobility / AV problem over web proxy

    Hi,
We use Corporate Wi-fi network in our company and users going away to internet over web proxy. Lync mobility users use https connection to connect  this corporate network but calling is unsuccesfull  because of A/V ports can’t pass over web proxy,
Is there any solution for this ?
Mmst of hotels  give internet conntection to their customers by web proxy thats why our users can’ t use their Mobile device for A/V call  during at hotel. Because A/V media ports are blocked by hotels web proxy . How can we overcome this issue?  Is
it posible to send all of the media traffic on HTTPS port?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Did you deploy an Edge server in DMZ zone?
If the internal Lync clients are unable to negotiate media directly, then the clients will rely on the Edge Server to tunnel the media for them. The mobile client will connect to and send its media session to the external Edge interface.

    basically you want user reports...
You can try go to transaction SE38 -> RSUSR*  , all the user reports are started with RSUSRxxxxx, inside might have something relevant to your request.

  • OCS Migration to Lync 2013 Delegate which Director that authenticates

Hello - I am in the middle of a migration from OCS 07 to Lync 2013. Everything is working pretty well. I have a new Lync Server with some users migrated over to it already and communication is fine between the Lync Desktop Clients and the OCS Desktop Clients.
We now want to use the Mobile Lync Client so I have installed Lync 2013 Client on my iPhone 5S. I was able to install the root cert on the phone however, when I try to sign in, I am getting the following error:
"We can't sign you in because your organization doesn't support this version of Lync. Please install Lync 2010 from your mobile store."
I am running Lync 2013 Standard Edition and I am running Lync 2013 Client for iOS. I can only assume that because the OCS director is still running it is handling authentication and its not compatible with Lync 2013. Is this a correct assumption?
That being said, and if that's indeed the issue, is there a way to delegate the Lync 2013 Director to take over authentication?
    Thank you!
    Russ, MCSE

    Hi there,
Lync 2013 Mobile clients relies on UCWA services to connect to  Lync server 2013 services, also Lync mobile autodiscovery depends on Lync web services publishing. Therefore you should make sure that lyncdiscover.sipdomain and lyncdiscoverinternal.sipdomain
points to Lync server 2013 web services and not OCS 2007.
specifically Lyncdiscover.sipdomain should point to the public IP address on which the Lync External WebServices are published.
so it is quite sure that if the above requirements are not met and especially the DNS configuration for Lyncdiscover and lyncdiscoverinternal mobile clients will not be able to connect.
