October CPU installpatchset FIX

I attempted to run the Oct CPU patchset and got the error about Not being able to read the README file and then of course the process quits.
I found 2 fixes:
1. Rename the 10_Recommended_CPU_2012-10.README file to 10_Recommended_CPU_2012-07.README
or
2. Edit the patchset.conf file to reflect the correct file 10_Recommended_CPU_2012-10.README
Geez, I thought this stuff was tested prior to releasing it:))

We are using object groups. I did create a very stripped down 1 block form, with no object groups, that I could deploy to both test servers and the fonts were different sizes when run from the different boxes. When I say stripped down I mean absolutely no triggers, procedures or anything in the form.

• October CPU Patch Caused Font Display Issues

We loaded the forms server October CPU patchset in test and our web deployed 10g forms are now displaying a smaller font. We've tried recompiling the forms on the server to no avail. It appears that the font is shrunken about 2 points so we would have to go up to an 11 point font to get back to where we were. Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this?

• Applied October CPU with Database up

One of our System Administrators (SA) missed the beginning instrution of shutting down the database to apply the CPU for October. I just realized it when he asked me whether he suppose to shutdown the database. Anyway the October CPU installed with no error and after applying the catbundble.sql script the patch is ok.
Is there anything we have to be concern about by applying the CPU while the datagbase is running?

Regardless, I'm worried about two things:
1. If the CPU involved relinking oracle binaries (they usually are) how did it go with binaries in use?
2. Why in the world a System Administrator is applying a Database Patch?Because there is no DBA on the field on site, so the SA does it from written instruction we send with the package.
The safe approach is to rollback the CPU and reapply it.Sure we could certainly rollback, but is there a way we can tell if there is a problem?
We check the status from ./opactch lsinventory and all patchese (27 in total) are listed.

• CPU WHINE FIX

I'm wondering if anyone out there had their macbook sucessfully repaired for the CPU whine issue. I'm sending in my macbook tomorrow and I'm wondering if when it comes back - it will whine again (sooner or later).
If you got yours fixed - can you tell me please what components were replaced?
Thanks a lot - Trying to get this thing fixed once and for all - If it wasn't for this issue I'd be 100% satisfied as opposed to 50% NOW

no one? Not a single person got their MacBook fixed for the whine issue?

• Dreamweaver CS3 hogging CPU - any fix?

I finally upgraded from GoLive CS2 to Dreamweaver CS3. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it!)
Dreamweaver at idle is using over a quarter of my CPU! (Mac Mini 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM) No well-written program does this so I figure there must be something that I can turn off that was defaulted to "on" so I can speed up my computer.
It's so bizarre that it demands almost half a GHz—460,000,000 cycles per second, folks—just sitting there!
Thanks!
Andrew

Thanks for the suggestion, but no. Activity Monitor is showing it's distinctly the Dreamweaver CPU process, plus I updated the software just a few days before.
I've seen other discussions online posted in the past couple of years about the same CPU-hogging problem on Mac and Windows boxes. There was some Windows patch (I believe it was from an unauthorized 3rd party) that purportedly fixed the problem, but I didn't see anything for Macs and I wasn't sure if there was any official solution (even if it involves upgrading to CS4) . . . other than live with a program that's making your system slow down for no good reason.
Thanks,
Andrew

• Media Live CPU Heatsink Fix

As everyone knows that has a Media Live unit the cpu heatsink leaves much to be desired!
It is a very difficult install and does not do the job as far as I'm concerned. Even using
Arctic Silver 5 my idle temps with this heat sink were around 48C and the way the thing
is configured it was blowing hot air on the memory! What I did was to buy a
Cooler Master RR-CCH-P912-GP low profile cpu cooler. It's still too tall right out of the
package but what I did was to remove the fan that comes on it and replace it with the
fan that was in the original heat sink. I have it blowing air out of the case not down into
it like the original heatsink had. Now I'm idling at aroung 31C and playing a dvd or a game
or whatever I haven't seen it go over 48C and the memory is just warm to the touch not
hot.

I'm using a 5200+ cpu and A-Data memory DDR2 800 the sticks with the heat sinks. My idle temps with the MSI cooler were around 48C and the if you touched the heat sinks on the memory it was scary hot. I'm of the opinion that if I can get the cpu to idle at about 31C and under full load never get above 48C which was the idle temp with the MSI cooler, then I'm adding life to the cpu and the memory cause the memory is now just warm to the touch and as we all know, cooler is better and heat kills! I have a gaming rig with a MSI mobo using the 790i chipset and a Q6600 OC'd to 4.3GHz, two ATI 4850 vid cards in CrossFire and insanely overclocked (playing Crysis with settings full out on dual 22" monitors) and 4 gigs of Corsair Dominator ram. I'm cooling that with the big external Koolance water cooling system so that should prove how paranoid I am about heat! By the way, I highly recommend Koolance for water cooling. Even the smaller internal system that they have works great.
Quote from: Hans on 27-October-08, 00:36:31
Sorry, I cannot agree on this.
The heatsink installs just fine. The point is that you shouldn't try to see what you are doing. Just use your fingers and you have it installed within the minute. I don't see why so many people struggle to get this installed ...
Second: it does it's job well enough for me. It ceels the cpu and doesn't make much noise doing that. Wha tmore would I want?

• IWeb CPU usage, fix that worked for me

On my MacBook Pro having iWeb open and idling with my relatively simple site would cause my CPU usage to hover between 35% and 50%. Pretty disconcerting since I have a 2.66 i7 model and 8 gigs of RAM. Some pages on my blog have a decent amount of text and pictures and typing became a one letter at a time event since the program would just drag. Very annoying.
I did a lot of searching and finally found something today that worked for my situation. Since it took a bunch of time to locate a solution I figured I'd share it.
My problem ended up being a font issue. I opened up Font Book and saw several errors with duplicate fonts. Since there were a few I just did a select all and then selected resolve duplicates from the menu. To be safe I rebooted but that may not have been necessary.
Now iWeb idles between 5% and 10% which is much more reasonable. Not to mention now I can work on my site and have my battery last longer than an hour and a half!
Anyway, I hope this helps someone.

If doing so improved the situation, this confirms that one of Safari's database files has become corrupt and is causing the crashing, and this shows up in your crash log as Thread 3 having crashed.
The blacklists from Google’s Safe Browsing Initiative (where Safari checks for 'fraudulent websites') are contained in a database cache file called SafeBrowsing.db - the file was created when you first launched Safari 3.2, and if you have the browser open, the file is modified approximately every 30 minutes.
As an alternative to turning off 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website', which will lose you that important security feature, you should delete that database file, (but first close Safari):
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari (this is a folder)/SafeBrowsing.db
It will be recreated next time you open Safari, and will then start again collecting details of dodgy websites.

• PSE 10 both Organizer and Editor crash on multi-core hardware; set affinity to single cpu mode fixes

As I have noted in thread http://forums.adobe.com/thread/941128 I have found that both the editor and the organizer for PSE 10 crash in a multi core environment, I am running WIndows 64 bit, latest updates (includes sp1), I had the same problems with Windows 7 32 bit.
Solution is to set the affinity to a single cpu. From the task manager, select the 'processes' tab, find the exe (eg PhotoshopElementsOrganizer), right-click, select 'Set affinity...' and reduce the number of CPUs selected (checked) to exactly one. (Under different versions of Windows the exact means for doing this varies, but the essential steps are the same). It doesn't matter which cpu you select, but if you do both the Editor and the Organizer, put them on different CPUs.
Given that pretty well all hardware these days is multi-core, my assumption is that Adobe test in a virtualized environment and so do not discover this type of unreliabillity. Adobe really do need to test their software more thoroughly as the exact same problem existed in PSE 6, so it is hardly new to them.

The solution is in the above.
Should Adobe read this, they should take note that a virtualized environment does not provide a decent fidelity emulation of multi-core CPU systems. The ONLY way to test the reliability of an application is on REAL hardware.

• Did Apple Care underclock my CPU to fix my heat issues?

So I just got my 15" MacBook back from being repaired. I have a week one, and had several issues (bad pixel spots, screen inverter whine, laptop crashed while erasing and formatting, etc). As for many on this forum, excessive heat was among my issues. Now my machine runs somewhat cooler, but my clock speeds range from 1.0 GHz to 1.83 GHz (on average I seem to be running about 1.5) while the power cord is plugged in. I was under the impression that these MacBooks should run at 1.83 GHz regardless while running off battery. I did not have CoreDuoTemp installed before I sent my machine off, so I don't know if my machine was powersaving while off battery before I sent it in for repair.
If anyone can help or comment on this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks!
1.83 GHz MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.4) 3.2GHz Pentium 4 Suse and 4GB iPod mini

No, I think your computer is just fine. My CPU clock speed also changes. Right now, it's plugged in to the AC and is running at 1.67Ghz. The max is 2.16Ghz for my computer. When I run Parallels booting my Windows XP Pro, it sometimes runs at 2.16Ghz and the temperature shoots up to 80C, the fan kicks in and then the temperature dropps to closer to 70C.
So yes, the speed is supposed to be variable.

• CPU Patches to EBS

Hello :
I have successfully upgraded the system to latest patchsets. The database is already on 11g. The only thing which is pending now is the CPU Patches.
I know that the Database and the Application tier CPU patch is cumulative where as the EBS suite patch is not cumulative.
For me to apply the EBS suite CPU's I need to know the current CPU patch applied to it. If I know this then I can probably list all the CPU patches that needs to be applied to the system. Is there any way or query that I can use to get this information.
Please advice any good reference material to carry out this patching. I want to merge all the EBS patches together and then apply it in one shot.
Regards,

• Policy on download access to CPU's (security patches)

Does Oracle provide access to OTN members for security patches, namely the most recent, October CPU for Oracle 10g rel 2? Or, is this access available only for those with metalink access?

I'm honestly trying to understand the security risk here.
If you're using the OTN license, then there are a limited number of Oracle databases installed on development machines in your organization with no access to the internet and no sensitive data. The vast majority of development machines I've ever seen are horifically vulnerable because no one bothers to spend the time locking them down in the first place-- it's a lot easier to attack a system when the front and back door aren't locked than to figure out how to infiltrate through the chimney. I've never seen a licensed organization where patches were applied to every Oracle database on every laptop, every application server on every laptop, the FTP server that got installed on some random dev machine for testing, etc. I can't imagine a shop where Oracle wasn't even in production wanting to go through that effort every quarter.
Oracle virii and worms are, while not impossible, are extremely rare, so the risks tend to come from attackers explicitly targetting a system, and no one is going to attack a dev system with no production data.
Even if the worst happens and one of your dev databases is compromised, what is the loss? At worst, you uninstall Oracle and reinstall and a developer has lost an hour of their life. I'd wager that it would take way more time to apply the patch (and fix all the little things that the developers forgot at the time) than to rebuild the database if it were lost.
If I'm missing an important attack vector or security concern, I'd certainly be interested in hearing about it. At the moment, though, I just don't see a cause for concern.

As most of the time the CPU utilization is high, I am planning to change the priority of some of the tasks to lower from default, so that the High priority tasks can go ahead and finish their task execution.
Please let me know using in Java how can I achieve that? Is it possible for Java to determine the priority of execution even though several JREs are involved?
Thanks in advance,
-Ajay

First thanks to everyone providing me lots of information regarding OS & Java internals
The problem that I am facing is,
There are multiple applications running on one Solaris box say Application-1 and Application-2. Now due several design holes Application-1 eating up most of the CPU cycles(Not all the time but during upgrades, reporting etc) Please note Application-1 need to run no matter whether it is eating CPU or not.
Now Application-2 is having two sub component
1. Reading binary data from several clients (High priority task)
2. Parsing those data(well performance tuned java code with high CPU utilization)
In this above scenario if Application-2 sub component (2) runs along with Application-1 which consumes most of the CPU cycle then the whole system will be state to function.
I know the answer will be to tune the code which eats the max CPU and fix the problem, but you need to consider this is one application of 7 years age and still the development is happening on top it.
So only possible solution from my side to isolate the component I can reduce the priority of execution and wait till the component which can not be get delayed processing. Means yield Application-2 sub component – 2 for Application-1 to complete its processing.
Sounds strange right? But I am not finding any other ways to solve this issue immediately
So the solution I figured out is to have a component to check the System recourse Utilization and yield Application-2 sub component-2 till have enough CPU to proceed(Again I know it really a bad way to solve an issue)

• Apply CPU before upgrade?

We are upgrading from 10.2.0.5 to 11.2.0.3 as well as applying the October CPU within the same outage. We are installing the 11.2.0.3 oracle binaries ahead of time outside of the outage. Is there any reason we can't apply the October CPU to the binaries we install prior to upgrading the DB, to save outage time? Should we still run catbundle after the upgrade or would the changes it makes be included in the steps that the upgrade performs?

Yes you can apply the CPU (now renamed to SPU) ahead of time, then run any post install scripts in the CPU after the upgrade is completed. See this MOS Doc
Best approach for Oracle database patching sequence to latest/required patchset along with CPU/PSU/any-other-one-off patch [ID 865255.1]
Oracle recommends that you apply the latest PSU instead - PSUs includes CPUs/SPUs and are also released quarterly. Pl be aware that once you apply a PSU, you will need to continue to apply PSUs in the future (you cannot apply CPUs/SPUs).

• Patching, CPU PSU

hi,
today I 've red through the Critical Patch Update from April. But my english is not good enough to understand everything. So maybe someone can help me.
okay... in february I've installed a new linux-server with oracle 10.2.0.1, after that I upgraded to 10.2.0.4 and then applied the PSU from January
what I had to do now? There is a CPU and a PSU for 10.2.0.4 and a PSU for 10.2.0.4.4
CPU has only security fixes, right? PSU has bugfixes+securityfixes and is cummulativ (means I can install it on a blank 10.2.0.4). Can I install it too after the January PSU is installed?
And for future... what do I have to do, if I omitted one PatchDay? Can I apply the next PSU, or is it necessary to first install the omitted CPU/PSU....
sorry for this noob-questions, but I'm not able to get this information out of the documentations

Hi,
Whenever you apply next CPU patch its not necessary to apply the omitted patches...
Its always there in read me file...
PSU patches are CPU+bug fixes and sometimes they generate some new bugs..
So its better to look in metalink about bug fixed and new issues with the PSU patch.
Similar is case with PSU, its not necessary to apply omitted patch ,... you can directly apply latest PSU fro a db version.... better refer to readme..
Also refer to forums..
