October CPU Patch Caused Font Display Issues

We loaded the forms server October CPU patchset in test and our web deployed 10g forms are now displaying a smaller font. We've tried recompiling the forms on the server to no avail. It appears that the font is shrunken about 2 points so we would have to go up to an 11 point font to get back to where we were. Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this?

We are using object groups. I did create a very stripped down 1 block form, with no object groups, that I could deploy to both test servers and the fonts were different sizes when run from the different boxes. When I say stripped down I mean absolutely no triggers, procedures or anything in the form.

Font display issues

Upgraded to Lion on an iMac, now I have strange font display issues across applications and in browsers and specifically with numbers, somethimes letters.

Start with something relatively simple, like clearing the font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for you to enter your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

This problem has been going on for years and seems to be related to converting pixels to points, or points to pies between operating systems such as Apple / Microsoft. See The age-old outgoing mail font problem
Its a complete pain and beyond me why something SO simple as having the text display correctly between operating systems has not been fixed, especially in this era of technology. Apple should really focus on this and I am amazed that after waiting 4 years since the release of Microsoft Outlook 2011 for the new Microsoft Outlook 2015 that Microsoft have also not fixed this. Its just beyond comprehension and effects both the reputation of people sending emails using these platforms and those organisations that produce the software, and chose to ignore the problem without fixing it. The industry leaders should do just that and lead the way by fixing this basic problem, not burying their heads in the sand and hoping goes away.
Recently I have had to resort to typing the required email text in something like the TextEdit app, copying and pasting it into the Outlook mail body. Its not great, adding extra steps for every email sent and I use my Mac for business so there are many daily email being generated. At least doing it this way all the text is consistent when sent although I'm sure there could be a workflow generated in Automator or an AppleScript that would reduce the steps.

Why does FF18 (and not older releases) have new, severe font display issues in some contexts?

When I upgraded to FF18 in Windows XP, all the sample pages (more than 200) in my portfolio site were effectively rendered unreadable in FF18 in XP. I also noticed the darker themes in Gmail had some of the same issues, though much less severe. I see none of these problems in FF18 on OS X using the latest version of the OS (Version 10.8: "Mountain Lion"). The issues seem to have no relationship to the fonts specified, although on one system, the bolder Arial in Gmail's top menubar looked much worse than unbolded Arial inside the inbox.
I narrowed down the portfolio page issues to two main contributing factors:
1. Translucent CSS opacity setting in a non-containing layer below the layer containing the text. To try being a bit more clear, the layer that actually contained the text and its background was NOT using any opacity settings. Think of the lightbox effect, if you've heard of that, to pop-up a page inside the existing browser window rather than in a new window, which typically uses a translucent overlay outside of the text area that reveals some of the background of the opening page.
2. The text layer used white and other light-colored text on a dark background (#262626).
Although I've I spent several days redesigning and reworking my pages to protect them from future potential rendering issues, I'd still like to know more about what's causing this. I've worked around somewhat similar issues in other browsers (mainly ie and chrome), but never so severe as these latest ones in FF18.
I tried unchecking the hardware acceleration checkbox in Options, and tried reversing the gfx 'azure' and '2d' options in about:config. I also tried disabling all add-ons. However, none of this made any difference in either Gmail or my own pages.
I can't realistically ask my potential clients to fiddle with all of these settings, so that is a major reason for asking. I could post a couple of screenshots of my Gmail inbox, although I don't see any place in this form for file uploads.

Chinese Font Display Issues

Dear Adobe Community,
I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS6, and using chinese characters for my text. I've been using "Xingkai SC" however strangely, some characters when typed will display correctly as "Xingkai SC" but others will not, and will automatically switch to "Adobe Heiti Std." I don't understand why this is happening, and would like to know the solution so that all characters appear as "Xingkai SC" instead of typing chinese and getting two fonts together in the same sentence. Here's a picture of this below. (a) As you can see the ( Left to right) 1rst and 3rd characters display "Xingkai SC" but the 2nd and 4th characters are displaying "Adobe Heiti Std."Also even when I highlight the text and manually try changing the text to "Xingkai SC" nothing happens, and everything remains the same. Also another quick question. When selecting fonts what does the "O" and "TT" mean? Hopefully can get the frustrating character issue resolved.

We use mostly English/Latin fonts so it's very hard to get someone who knows about Chinese fonts and Photoshop issues on a Mac. However I can give you something to go on.
You have to consult Chinese design forums, here is one to try.

Switching users causes screen display issues

I've had a new MacBook Pro 2011 that came with Lion on it. It's been working well, I migrated my old user accounts from my previous MacBook with Snow Leopard on it.
After having it a few weeks my son tried using the fast user switching and going into his account but the screen was exteremly glitchy. It basically show what looked like my users screen and would erase and paint with his correct screen as he dragged windows around. Eventually his screen would like correct then spontantously revert to showing my screen again.
Fast user switching back to my account showed everything correctly. Logging us both out and logging him in alone works fine. Logging him in first and then switching to my user gives me the problem he experienced of seeing mostly his screen and having to drag screens around causing re-painting to show my proper screen.
Screen refresh issue aside if we can work through messed up screens the computer appears to be working fine, apps launch properly and no sign of any memory or file corruption, everything "works" properly.
I tried completely removing and re-creating his account but the problem remains.
Couple of factors in case they are relevant.
1) We upgraded the HDD to a SDD but it shows not signs of any issues
2) We upgraded the memory beyond the normal limit of 8gb to 16gb using a Cruicial memory kit certified for the MacBook Pro.
3) We have both the laptop screen 1680x1050 running and an attached thunderbolt display AND a usb DisplayLink adapter to a 3rd Dell 1600x1200 monitor.
My intial thoughts were with the DisplayLink adapter. I made sure to get the latest drivers from the display link web site and did some searches but no one has described my problem.
The screen issue seems to present itself mainly on the "main monitor" the 27" thunderbolt display but we have seen some screen corruption on the MacBook LCD. Oddly the DisplayLink always appears correct.
Anyone have any ideas?

As a followup. Experimenting seems to suggest that removing the driver for DisplayLink cures the issue. Going to test more with reinstalling the driver and just unplugging the USB cable before switching.
Was also seeing (before uninstall) issues with getting a Beach Ball freeze during logout of the 2nd user.
I want to be certain of if it's the DisplayLink driver but once I am certain I'll take my gripe to their support forum.

Screwy font display issues under size 10 type (Mac/PC)

Given the nature of the problem, I think it's probably a Mac issue and not a PowerPoint or PC issue...
I'm working in PowerPoint on both the Mac and PC. Latest versions of PPT for both platforms, so I'm using the .pptx file format. I've got a footnote on my slides that started out as size 8 Arial. My Windows XP Pro box (SP3) displays this just fine in PowerPoint 2007. My MacBook Pro displays it just fine on PowerPoint 2008 and in Windows XP Pro (SP3) under XP in Parallels.
It does not display appropriately on my client's computers, all of which are Macs running Leopard (10.5.8) and PowerPoint 2008. It looks crunched and garbled on-screen, but it prints fine. Arial at larger sizes (10 +) displays and prints as expected. It seems to just be size 8 or smaller.
I read a MS MVP reply on a thread elsewhere that suggested that Arial for the PC and Arial for the Mac aren't really the same font (thank you, Microsoft). So, I tried changing to other fonts that are supposedly standard on both platforms. Trebuchet MS and Times New Roman also display the same problem. Anything size 8 or smaller has the same display error on my client's machines, which I cannot reproduce on my PC installations or my own MacBook Pro which also runs 10.5.8.
I can replicate the error on an older desktop Mac running 10.4.11, though.
What am I missing? How can I work around this? I'm cool with any legible standard font, but given the requirements of my project it's got to be about size 8 to fit reasonably in the space I have for footnotes.

I'm not sure. They're on a mix of desktop and laptop systems, from what I've seen. I've seen something similar to what they report on my desktop Mac, which is running a 23" Apple Cinema display under 10.4.11, but not my MacBook Pro's 15" screen.
Their IS group recommended trying Verdana instead of Arial. It looks a little better on my desktop Mac. I'm waiting for the client's review of my latest test file to see how it appears on their end.

Creating PDF files from Quark causes font/image issues. PLEASE HELP.

After creating a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat Professional (using the file>Export to PDF option) from QuarkXPress version 7.3, my client sees and prints distorted letters with various fonts and they even sometimes see lines where they shouldn't be. I don't see these issues on my end, even when I print the documents. For example, I may have a headline of four words, the top of the words are shifted to one side, or sometimes even the top half of the letters are in a different color. Please help soon before I lose my clients... or my mind. Thanks.

We don't use Quark anymore, but I seem to remember that the export to pdf does not use Acrobat Distiller. It is Quark's own pdf maker. If the customer does have Acrobat Professional, then get them to print to the Adobe PDF 'printer' and seeif they get the same problem. They may need to open the Distiller app to set which output settings are used.

This is what my screen sometimes looks like - and I have no idea why. I use Mozilla Firefox on a 20" Intel Core Duo iMac running OSX 10.4.7. I thought I fixed this problem when I hand-sorted through 1,800 fonts and deleted any that seemed 'bad'. Alas, it returns.
Any ideas? It seriously is too annoying to suffer existance.

I finally figured it out. Either from the 10.4.7 update, or from repairing disk/permissions the default Sans Serif font for Firefox was changed from Helvetica to a much different font that somehow caused this error

Font display issues after 10.5 install

Seeing fractions and garble. It shows in places like Mail and Safari. Visiting slashdot.org gives me garbled text for any of the headlines. Running a G5 Power PC with lots of ram. Help me. Use the force.

It's most likely just corrupt font cache files at this point. I was going to suggest clearing those yesterday, but the utility I normally suggest for that hasn't been updated for Leopard yet.
Did just read about this one in the current issue of Mac|Life. Download FontNuke. Run the app and click on the "Nuke Font Caches" button at the upper left. The panel will fill with other choices. At the lower right, first click "Update Caches List". It will search your hard drive for font cache files and list them. The purpose being simply so you can see what is about to be removed. Click the "Nuke Font Caches" button at the bottom right. Your Mac will restart. Don't attempt to stop the restart. You should always restart immediately after removing cache files.

[SOLVED] xelatex weird font display issue

Hello all
I was playing around with fonts on my system today, and noticed that, all of a sudden, the fonts were being garbled by xelatex whenever I compiled a document. Backtracking to what I'd done, it turns out that xelatex will get confused by multiple occurrences of the same font in a fc-cache path (for want of a better term). Earlier on this afternoon, I'd recently followed a guide in the wiki (or thereabouts) to make some TeX fonts available to fc-cache. However, xelatex looks in the system font path when it loads them, and appears to discover two or more versions of the same font, and doesn't know which to substitute. Hence the output text gets a whole lot of characters messed up.
The solution is simple: remove the LaTeX fonts from the system search path. In my case, I'd symlinked `/etc/fonts/conf.avail/09-texlive-fonts.conf` to `/etc/fonts/conf.d/09-texlive-fonts.conf` (as you do to enable fontconfig rules), and run fc-cache to update them. Removing this link and updating the cache fixes the issue, after recompiling the affected documents.
Does anyone think I should edit the wiki to point this out for future reference? It had me confused for a bit (right when I need to compose a job application due Monday), and Google didn't say anything. It might be useful for other tinkerers.

I've had similar problems with XeLaTeX in the past. I hope they figure out a way to fix it.
I think perhaps the wiki should be edited to give a warning that this might happen, and maybe water down the suggestion for making TeX fonts available and/or suggest alternatives.
Personally, I quickly regretted the decision to make all the TeX fonts available to fontconfig, merely because the huge number of them (at least for a full TeXlive install) made using any font selection dialogue overwhelming. I've switched to fc-caching them manually if and when I need them.

Font display issues in questions

Hi-
This the first time that I have experienced this and cannot seem to figure this one out.
I have created a quiz in Captivate 4 and when I go to preview the project the words of the question are in some sort of symbols font.
this is in the preview mode and when it is published.......
When you look at the question in captivate this how it appears:
I have tried changing the font, the size of the font, the "fill" and get the same results. I am not sure what else to try. Does anyone have any ideas?

Wow, that's really bizarre! Can't say that I've ever seen that before.
I'm wondering what you would see if you were to click File > Export > Project Captions and Closed Captions. Does the font look all odd then in the resulting Word document?
Was this something you created yourself or is it something that someone else created and you are editiing? I'm wondering if perhaps if you are editing another's work if maybe they used a font that isn't installed on your PC or something.

Font Display Issue in iTunes 7

Can anyone help me with this one? Took a screenshot to make it easier to explain.

It's looked like this since I upgraded to 7, all the characters are replaced with |||||||||||. Makes it pretty hard to navigate.
I've triple checked my location \ language settings, and they're all in english.

Were you browsing the iTunes Store for Japan? maybe your system or iTunes don't have Japanese fonts installed .. that's why the words are all replaced with IIIII ... just a guess...

Any ideas why I would be having this display issue on just one page on my website?

Firstly, the webpage URL that is in question is http://crawford3d.businesscatalyst.com/maya-models.html.
The issue arises only when I publish the site and this is my second attempt to fix the issue. The first page was created with anchors that pointed to 7 embedded videos from youtube. The problem was similar where the page was sliced and the location of the videos where changed. I'm using the same master page for this page that I'm using for the other pages, so I'm thinking it is something to do with just that one page. My attempt at a fix was as follows: I used a composition lightbox to embed the videos so I could just click on the thumbnail to view the videos individually: however, the problem must not be with the method I'm using because I'm getting the same sliced display on the page. As you can see on the page a preview of the videos are also being displayed which is not supposed to happen when using a "lightbox". Please Help!! Thanks

In one of your embedded Youtube videos HTML, you have a number of closing <div> tags, and a closing <body> tag. That will be causing the display issues you are seeing. Might just be a copy/paste issue, but removing those should fix your problem.

Safari 3.2.1 With 10.5.6 Update = Corrupt Font Display

Since updating to 10.5.6, Safari is corrupting the display of certain small fonts, such as the "Compose" and "Preview" tab labels at the top of this Discussion "New Topic" window, and mail subjects in Yahoo web mail. The problem is more severe with small bold fonts. I have OS X's font smoothing turned off for font sizes smaller than 12 pt, and use the CRT smoothing style, as I prefer little to no font smoothing on my LCD monitor.
I've reset Safari, corrected duplicate fonts, validated all fonts, run DiskWarrior, FontNuke to clear all font caches, and even reinstalled the 10.5.6 combo updater; nothing has helped. If I make the font one size smaller, the corruption is mostly corrected. OmniWeb 5.8 has the same issue as Safari under 10.5.6; FireFox 3.0.5 & Camino 1.6.6 are unaffected, and render fonts as well under 10.5.6 as they did under 10.5.5.
I've booted my 10.5.5 backup to verify that Safari 3.2.1 and OmniWeb 5.8 had no font display issues before the 10.5.6 update. The 10.5.6 update was the only software change made on my system since the 10.5.5 backup I used for comparison.
Anyone else seeing strange font display in Safari under 10.5.6? I think you'd have to minimize OS X font smoothing as described above for the problem to become visible. I'm out of possible solutions, other than hoping for a fix in 10.5.7.

Well, for the time being, I'm just going keep 10.5.6, and use revised font smoothing settings: "Automatic" style, and "turned off" for font sizes 10 pt and smaller. The reason is that I did a little more investigating, and found that the distorted small font issue affects the entire system, including the Finder, not just Safari.
I checked my G4 MDD that's running 10.4.11 on two 23" monitors (1920x1200), and it has the same issue as my G5 running 10.5.6, if font smoothing is turned off. So, this is apparently a long standing OS X issue that, for some reason, never affected my lower resolution G5 system driving a 20" monitor (1680x1050) until the 10.5.6 update was installed.
