OD Computer Settings

I am new to OD. I am trying to get SL Server setup on my Mac mini to handle accounts and backups among other custom services that I have running via Apache. I have got the DNS configured and changeip -checkhostname says it is correct. I have promoted the server to OD master and can successfully bind to the directory. However, I cannot get user accounts to authenticate and cannot seem to apply any of the settings specified in Workgroup Manager for user or computer accounts in the directory. I can make changes but they have no effect.
Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

I still don't have it figured out. After the recent Snow Leopard update my test machine decided to try and authenticate to the OD server. I could tell because of the message I set for the login screen finally appeared. However, the login took forever and hung a few times requiring a reboot. Once it logged in none of the other preferences that I set in OD took effect (i.e. System Preferences, etc.) I haven't tried anything else to troubleshoot. I actually unbound that computer from OD so it would work right.
I did get Time Machine working, but that doesn't require OD. If you figure something out please let me know.

  • Gpresult html report creation not working for computer settings

When I try and run a gpresult. all I get is this at the command prompt (as administrator).
    gpresult /h c:\report.html
    ERROR:
The error is particulary helpful ;-)
I can successfully create a xml file with /x report.xml . Its a pain to read though.
Also group policy results is also broken. I get the message:
An error occurred while generating report:
An unknown error occurred while the HTML report was being created.
I have read the fixes involving editing install.ins to remove the imported zones. This doesn't fix the issue.
It only occurs when I want the results from the computer settings. User settings work fine.
The environment is Windows 7 with Server 2008 R2 DCs. We have 3 2012 servers where gpresult works when processing computer settings.

    Hi,
Before going further, can we run
    gpresult/r, gpresult/v or gpresult/z
to see whether we can collect computer settings? Besides, we can go to Event Viewer to see whether some error events were logged and keep us posted.

  • Can't get WRT54G to start up, gets stuck at "checking computer settings"

Can't get WRT54G to start up, gets stuck at "checking computer settings" at 99% Please help!
If I hit the escape key it will go to the password screen, it looks like the password is already entered for me so I hit enter, but then it just goes back to "checking computer settings" and won't go past 99% again.'
Sorry but the last post mistakenly said the wrong number so I posted this.

If you are running the install CD that came with the router, the behavior you describe is exactly what happened when I tried using the CD today. The CD didn't seem to work with my computer's fixed IP address (not in the 192.168.1.0 network.)
What worked for me was to set my computer to have the fixed IP address 192.168.1.2. Then I was able to contact the router using its web interface at 192.168.1.1 amd make the necessary settings.
The password had NOT been changed from the default despite the install CD software seemingly accepting a new password. The default password worked.

    Hi All
I need to edit the IE LAN settings in GP using only computer settings. The changes I'm making are going to be applied to laptop users only, I don't want the settings applied to users as our users connect in various different ways (Desktops, laptops, so on)
The changes I'm making cannot affect the desktops, only the laptops & it cannot affect all users, only laptop users.
Tricky I know, but does anyone know how to do this? my Google searches have been unsuccessful so far!

  • 2008R2 RD Termimnal Server stuck at apply computer settings over an hour

    Hi Everyone
I am currently experience issue with my 2008R2 RD Terminal Servers. Every time I reboot the server it stuck in the "Apply computer settings" screen for few hours. These RD Terminal server is part of our NLB cluster. User connect to the
RD terminal Servers via FQDN for the NLB cluster VIP . Each servers has dual network adaptor. The second network adaptor is link to a NLB cluster. If one of the servers stuck in the "Apply computer settings
screen" Open NLB manger from one of the RD Terminal server, NLB manager will end up not responding.
I have found a way to allow me to login to the problematic RD terminal server by disabling the network on the network adaptor of the vm. This allow me to login. Then I quickly re enable the network on the adaptor. Users complained when
they log in to that server stuck at "Apply computer settings" screen
We do have GPO policy apply to these terminal servers I have moved one of the RD Terminal server to another OU with minimum policy that makes no different.
    Appreciate any advice
    Thanks

I have managed to resolve the issue by going into safe mode and disable windows management instrumentation service after reboot I am able to login . remove VMware tools. restart the server. apply computer setting disappear. almost like something is conflicting
    with VMware tools

  • Adjustments in computer settings to improve loading of YouTube videos

My question may be completely misguided. If so, it stems from my slender knowledge of the entire process. I have a friend who cannot adequately open the YouTube links I send her. I'm wondering why, and I'm also wondering if she might improve things by some simple changes in her computer settings. I believe that YouTube videos are "streamed" and that some ccmputer/Internet capabilities are inadequate for the task of viewing long, streaming videos. That's fine, but what about "loading"? One is constantly confronted by this term while downloading something from the Internet. My question is, once something is downloaded into a computer, shouldn't it be ready for viewing? In other words, if a five-minute video takes one-hour to download, does the one-hour downloading period make a difference? Isn't the fact that it has been downloaded the only important thing? Further, what, if anything, can the computer owner do to improve/make possible the video viewing experience?

    Very simple:
    1. Apple owns these forums and can dictate any rules they wish to do so. Among them is that we are not allowed to talk about illegal processes.
    2. Youtube owns their site and can dictate any rules they wish. See their ToU (in particular para. 4):
    https://www.youtube.com/t/terms
Anyway, they do not own these videos, and it seems strange that they would be pointing their finger at others for copying their illegal possessions.
Read their ToU (para. 6) - when someone uploads the video, they retain their ownership, but do extend to Youtube certain rights. They do not have "illegal possession".
What I don't understand is why it's bad to download them but okay to forward the links to them.
You still are not understanding the difference between the actual act of downloading content (= transferring content from the website onto your computer) vs. forwarding a link to someone to look at the content on Youtube's website. Looking at the video on the website is NOT downloading it.
First, I'd like to say that YouTube is a world treasure. They have made the world a better place to live.
Fortunately, we live in a country where everyone can express their opinion. I certainly do not share yours; in fact, I very rarely visit that website.
There is no need to further discuss the laws, their terms, or the ToU here - you or I may not agree with them, but we all did agree to follow them when we established an account here and/or on YouTube's site. This is my last comment here before the hosts decide to send this entire thread into ether space.

  • GPO Filtering for a user of computer settings.

I have defined a GPO with only the computer settings and I would like to exclude a particular user from this GPO, can I achieve this with GPO filtering?

    > I have computer settings defined in the GPO which disables removable

No. If you want to exclude users, you have to disable removable storage
in the user part of your GPOs...

  • Server stucks at Applying Computer Settings after every reboot

    Hello!
On one of our sites containing around 15 servers, whenever a terminal server is rebooted, it gets stuck on Applying Computer Settings for around 15 minutes. If it is un-joined from the domain then no issue. Moreover, once it is done with this delay, no time
delay is observed in user login. But after every reboot, 15 - 20 mins delay is always observed. Domain is the same at other sites and no issue is being observed else where.

  • Parallels Desktop getting Stuck on "Applying Computer Settings"

I get it installed and updated, but everytime I complete the installation of PC-cillin Internet Security 2006 and reboot, Windows XP hangs on 'Applying Computer Settings.'
Anyone have a clue what to due to advance it beyond this point? I have uninstalled and and reinstalled it already one and applied all updated.

No, I dont think so as I had XP running fine and in
fact even had it hooked into my local home Windows
2003 server on my home domain.
Has to be something with PC-cillin.
James, sorry, what I meant was your title says "Parallels Desktop getting Stuck", and to me it sounds like Parallels is working fine, its XP that is stuck on "Applying Computer Settings"? (could very well be PC-cillin, just not sure if Parallels is the issue)
Some Windows XP docs on it:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832161
(mentions trying to unplug the network cable to see if it loads that way)
    http://steven.vorefamily.net/2004/06/windows-xp-hangs-applying-computer.html
    http://microsoft.mailarchive.ca/public.windowsxp.security_admin/2004-10/2366.htm l
    (DNS issues)
I don't see any specific issues mentioned on the Parallels board about PC-cillin, I guess the easiest thing is to boot into safe mode, remove PC-cillin completely and restart without it. I've run AVG on my XP copy running on Parallels with no issues. Good luck!

  • Stuck on "Applying computer settings"?

I've got a three year old server running Server 2008R2 that has never shown any signs of a problem but today it blue screened and rebooted and after that it never gets to the login prompt getting stuck on this "Applying computer settings"
    message.
I've read a number of threads about this and several suggested fixes including a Microsoft FixIt, but my problem now is that I can't seem to login in Safe Mode in order to run the FixIt or any other repair. Because this is the only DC in the domain I can't
login using the domain administrator account, then for some reason I also can't login to the local administrator account. The password for the local administrator is not the same as the password for the domain administrator and I can't find any record in the
folder that's kept on this server of what the local admin password was and the folder which should contain a password reset disk is missing.
Is there any workaround for this problem when you can't login in safe mode?
    - Norm

"then for some reason I also can't login to the local administrator account" Domain controllers don't have local administrator accounts.  When they are promoted to a DC, the 'local administrator' is the domain administrator.
"Because this is the only DC in the domain "  OUCH!  One of the many reasons Microsoft always recommends having at least two DCs.
Option 1.  Go to your latest DC backup and recover, and hope that you have not made too many changes to your DC since your last backup.  With a single DC, hopefully you were creating a new backup after each known change.
Option 2.  Depending on what you thing you can do, boot into WinPE and manipulate files on the disk.  Obviously, you will need to know the specifics of what you are trying to change.  Sometimes the Fixit instructions provide the details necessary.
