OD settings and users backup and restore

Hi,
due a bug found on MacOS 10.4.9 (confirmed to me by Apple Italy) I need to reinstall a clean 10.4.7 server and to restore all the entire settings and users of the previous server. How I can backup on the old server the entire server settings, and all the user/password database, and restore it easy?
I have OD running, with no Kerberos, and a lot of preferences for the remote user's desktop.
Is possible?
TIA
MacBookPro 2.33 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ciao Gianluca
due a bug found on MacOS 10.4.9 (confirmed to me by
Apple Italy) I need to reinstall a clean 10.4.7
server and to restore all the entire settings and
users of the previous server. How I can backup on the
old server the entire server settings, and all the
user/password database, and restore it easy?
Not sure what you mean by this but if Apple Italy have confirmed it then who am I to argue? Server Admin allows you to save property lists (.plists) from the GUI itself. On each service settings that is configured and running just above the save button is a small icon, click and hold and drag it to the desktop or a memory stick etc. You can then use these property lists to configure your server later on. Alternatively if you are planning to deploy a second server you can make this a replica of the first one and when the first one is decommissioned promote it to Master. If you have made changes to host files and config files manually or using terminal then these too can be copied over, just stop the services first.
I have OD running, with no Kerberos, and a lot of
preferences for the remote user's desktop.
You can archive the LDAP Directory and Authentication database anywhere you like. Users (not diradmin) and Groups can be exported (passwords do not carry over). Likewise home folders can be transferred although this could be a problem later on especially if the path name does not match exactly so make a note of the existing one. One thing you should not do is to transfer the property list for Open Directory as this does not work. You really need to promote the new server to Open Directory Master and work from there. Managed Preferences do not transfer over either, but these can easily be applied later on, take snap shots of any pertinent settings and use these for reference. One more tip: take your time, have a fallback position just in case ie: invest in a firewire drive or better still a second internal drive and clone the existing server to that. You can use CarbonCopyCloner (www.bombich.com) or apple’s own disk utility using the restore feature. Hope this helps

    Hey there kevin8!
I have an article for you that can help you continue to troubleshoot this issue with the Wi-Fi on your iPhone. The article can be found right here:

Hopefully that will help resolve your issue. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • My iPod touch won't connect to wifi. Password is correct. Already reset network settings and restored ipod to original settings. Already updated iTunes and upgraded iPod to iOS 6.

A message keeps popping up when I try to join my network that says, "unable to join the network."
I have already reset network settings and restored ipod to original settings.
I already updated iTunes and upgraded iPod to iOS 6.
The password is correct. I even made sure by checking my wifi account.
I have completely restarted my internet connection multiple times.
I have also restarted my ipod multiple times
My wifi was working on my iPod yesterday before I reset all settings.
I updated it yesterday to iOS 5. Still didn't work.
It wasn't updated to the new iOS 6 until today so I don't think it has anything to do with the upgrade.
My camera started to be glitchy, so I reset my Ipod like I was advised in another discussion.
My internet wasn't connected anymore. My password wasn't working either, but the wifi connection was still showing.
    Safari still wasn't working, though.
I did the sensible thing and I reset my network connection.
Now, the password isn't working and there's no wifi signal.
The camera is working well now, but the wifi is messed up. I didn't expect any of this to happen. The internet is all I use the iPod for. Now, the iPod is useless to me. Please help?

are other things still connecting to the wifi without a problem?
Have you tried resetting network settings, then unplugging modem and router from power for 40 seconds then plugging back in letting the lights stabilize and Then recconecting with the ipod>?

  • Restoring to Factory Settings and Restore Backup on an iPod Touch 4G

I have seen many posts regarding restoring iPods to factory settings and then loading a backup.  I have seen many posts about the "Other" storage space, too.  But I haven't found any that address my specific issue.  I'm mostly looking for some assurance that I won't lose all of my son's and daughter's hard work and the money we've spent on a couple games.
I have reviewed the Usage on my son's iPod via Settings < General < Usage.  I added up the storage space of all the apps.  It is 2.1 GB.  This is what the "Apps" category shows is being used.  The "Other" category shows it's using 2.3 GB.  It is only an 8 GB iPod, so this "Other" is eating up a ton of space.  He has no videos, only pictures he's taken (which isn't very many), apps (I keep those at a minimum), and music (which I also keep tight control over).  How do I find out what this "Other" is, and how do I get rid of it?  He doesn't have e-mail, and doesn't use the calendar, contacts, or notes.  I've read posts which say I probably have corrupt files and have to perform a factory restore, which wipes everything out, then restore again from the latest backup, with no guarantee that the "Other" will go away.  I've also read horror stories about the factory restore causing problems with the basic function of an iPod.  I called Apple Support, and the young man I spoke to asked around (because he didn't know) and said that the data while using an app (games like My Horse and Angry Birds) is stored in the "Apps" category.  How can I be sure of this?  He has a game we've put a lot of time, energy, and some money into.  I do not want this to be lost.  I'm assuming that backing up from the lastest backup of the iPod will prevent this, but how can I be sure that the game information isn't part of the "Other"?  If it is part of the "Other", and it doesn't get reloaded to the iPod from the backup restore, then it's lost.  If this happens, I will be very upset.  I'm frustrated and confused by all the conflicting information I've read.  Does anyone know where the game data is stored?  Does anyone know if the "Other" will be restored from the backup, and thus make the entire restore process pointless?
    Please help!!

As you likely read already, the "other" category consists of those items not included in the enumerated categories. That is why it is called other. What is in it depends a lot upon what different app place it it.
2.1 GB seems large enough to it also contain corrupted files.
Usually restoring from backup reduces the other. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is necessary since the larger other may be included in the backup.

  • My I Touch is frozen. I have rebooted it, restored it to factory settings and restored it with backup. Sometimes it works for a week or 2, sometimes not.

My iTouch is frozen. I have rebooted it, restored it with backup and restored it to factory settings. It works for a week or 2 and then freezes again. Now it just will not unlock.

    pop the sim card out...
full restore, will wipe out the system & lock code...
resync with your data, and you should be good...

  • Can't connect to Wifi after restoring factory settings and restoring backup (internet on computer working just fine)

Want to die.  I've wasted my entire Sunday trying to connect to Wifi on my phone.  I tried the reset network settings, restored the phone to factory settings then restored the backup and still no game.  I have restarted the **** thing and am very frustrated. Every time I've updated my software with Apple I end up having to replace my phone.  I have an appointment with the genius bar tomorrow ,but hopefully someone here can help me so I don't jump in a river before that time.

    Hmmm.....
It's worth a hard reset (press and hold the sleep/wake button and the Home button together, ignoring the 'slide to power down' message and then release them when the display blanks. Press the sleep/wake button until the logo appears and then wait for the restart which takes a little while...)
Apart from that, it may be worth clearing Safari's cache, etc..... (Settings > Safari > Clear History/Cookies/Cache)
    In any event, 'Good luck'!!
If all else fails it IS possible that some WiFi hotspots are VERY hot and emit more power than is really allowable in the Standards, resulting in 'frying' your WiFi receiver (possible but unlikely). If this is the case, return your iPhone to an Apple store with the 'WiFi not working' message but don't mention Starbuck's or anyone else.....just don't use Starbuck's WiFi service ever again!

  • My iPhone 6 will not show battery percentage at all and keeps vibrate on even when manually turned off and yes I have reset the phone and reset network settings and restored, update etc etc

My iPhone 6 just went funny.  It will not show the batter percentage anymore and the alerts are coming through vibrating even when I have switched them off.  Please help! :-(

To turn battery percentage back on: Settings>General>Usage>Battery Percentage --switch on.

  • After upgrading to IOS 5.1.1 the Wi-Fi selection in settings greyed out and now says No Wi-Fi.  Have tried restting and restoring both from te phone and from Itunes but this does not solve the problem.

I recently upgraded my Iphone 4s to 5.1.1 and founf the Wi-Fi button in settings greyed out saying No Wi-Fi.  I have tried Reset network Settings, Rest All Settings and restore in Itunes but to no avail.  I understand this is a comon occurence but I cant find a solution to it.  Can anybody help?

    See this tip --> http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559
If this doesn't resolve it you most likely have a hardware failure. Fortunately, your phone is in warranty, so if you take it to an Apple store they will replace it.

  • 3gs no service after updating to ios 5 tried network reset, reset all settings and even restoring from back been with out phone for 3 weeks now need help telus cant find network problem and apple has bad customer support please help!!!

my 3gs has no service after updating from ios 5 tried resetting network settings, resetting all settings and restoring from back up on itunes.
telus cant find any network problems and apple is difficult to deal with.please help 3 weeks with no phone and $70 a month not happy.

I have been having a similar problem for the last few days.Without warning the signal will just completely duck out leaving the device searching for several minutes before settling on a no signal message.
Sometimes restarting the device, toggling data and 3g settings or toggling Airplane Mode will set things right. However, a lot of the time I've been left without a working phone.
I don't believe this is a SIM issue, as I had to change my SIM only one month ago for another signal related problem. Again any help would be appreciated here as well.

  • I have ios 7 and lately when im turning off cellular data for some apps when i leave settings and go back in they have turned on back again by themselves. It appears as if i cant turn off cellular data for the apps i want. Any tips?

I have ios 7 and lately when i go to settings-cellular and try to turn off cellular data for some apps it doesnt work. As i turn off cellular data for one app immideately after i exit settings and re-enter settings cellular data for that same app goes back on again by itself. That happens for most of my apps and is reqlly annoying. Whats more annoying is that when i am not using wifi even though the settings for cellular data for safari or facebook or some other app are turned on (since i cant turn them off as i mentioned) i get the message that cellular data is turned off for this app and i cant use the internet at all on cellular data. I have reset to factory settings and restored from backup and the problem persists. Is there some help or tips you can offer me?

Did you get anywhere with this? I'm considering wiping it and setting it up as a new device.
