ODBC installation

Hi,
I have a 10g application server and my database is 9i.
I need to host web site on the same 10g form service and report service server which requires ODBC connection to the 9i database.
Any idea how do I just install the ODBC? Or which version of ODBC should I install so they all work together nicely.
I tried with another server running on 2 homes and it was not stable.
Thanks

Don't even know what operating system version and edition or which product versions and editions you are working with.
9i and 10g are not versions they are marketing labels. 10g could stand for anything from 10.1.0.2 through 10.2.0.4 and there
are many versions in-between.
But to get to your question ODBC installation is an operating system issue and as you didn't state your operating system we
can not help you beyond a referral to metalink and/or google.

    Yes, something's wrong.
I'm sure you'll be likely to get more pertinent help if you list the exact error message title and text and specifically when you see it occur.
You might find more folks who have also experienced similar error with Photoshop Elements in the Photoshop Elements forum (this is the Photoshop full version for Windows forum).

  • ODBC installation failed

After successfully installed instantclient lite and sqlplus, ODBC installation failed with the undermentioned error message:
Couldn't find Oracle Instant Client in present directory.
The driver version used by me is instantclient-odbc-win32-10.2.0.1-20050930.
I understand that all of the requierd PATH variables has set. SQL connection is successfully tested. What could be wrong?

    Hi.
The documentation for the ODBC supplement states that one has to download the Instant Client Basic package. http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/releasenotes/ODBC_IC_ReleaseNotes.html
But it is not clear that the LITE package doesn't support ODBC.
Anyone else who knows if this is a feature or a bug?

  • ODBC installation; test fails with IM004

I'm having trouble getting an ODBC connection to a remote Oracle 8i databse. I have installed the Oracle8 ODBC Driver release 8.1.7.7.0. When I click "Test Connection" in the ODBC driver configuration window, I'm getting:
    Unable to Connect
    SQLState=IM004
    [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager]Driver's SQLAllocHandle on SQL_HANDLE_ENV failed.
The PC that this is occurring on is Windows 2000 Professional. From that machine, I'm able to access the Oracle database via SQL*Plus and via JDBC. I'm also able to TNSping the Oracle database.
I'm a member of the Administrator's Group. %ORACLE_HOME%\bin is in my path. It is in the system path. I have write access to the %ORACLE_HOME% directory.
I am using the Oracle 9.1 client at the recommendation of our Oracle database hosting provider. I tried to install the 9.2.0.4 driver but that resulted in an error (no more detail than that) from the Universal Installer.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

You need to use a version of the Oracle ODBC driver which is matched to the version of the Oracle client you have. If you have a 9.0 Oracle client, you need a 9.0.1.x Oracle ODBC driver. If you have a 9.2 Oracle client, you need a 9.2.0.x Oracle ODBC driver.

  • Instant-client odbc installation

I am trying to connect to remote database using R .So i downloaded client-basic-nt and instant-client -odbc from oracle .Unzipped both of them in the same folder and then tried to run odbc_install.exe.
It doesn't give me an error but it i feel it just doesn't execute and escapes .First i thought that it did install the client but i cant see any sqlnet.ora files and tnsname.ora file .In fact i cant find oracle/network directory ?can anyone suggest me is there another set of installation i require before this step ?

this is how I installed Instant client:
    1.downloaded oracle client extracted to C:\Oracle Client\
all the files extracted are in the folder as you see here C:\Oracle Client\instantclient_11_2
    2.created a C:\Oracle Client\tnsnames.ora
make sure you have the db connection details you want to connect to in this tns file
    3. set env. variables. (I hope you know how to do this in windows)
    Variable name : TNS_ADMIN Variable value : C:\Oracle Client
    Variable name : LD_LIBRARY_PATH Variable value : C:\Oracle Client\instantclient_11_2
Variable name : Path Variable value : C:\Oracle Client\instantclient_11_2 (include this to already existing variable 'path')
hope this helps. reply back if you have a question.

  • ODBC Installement for dummies!

Hi I've been trying to install a ODBC driver for Oracle for some times now. So my question is: Does anyone have a step by step manual to install either the Microsoft ODBC or Oracle's ODBC driver for 8.1.7.3
It would be very nice to have a guide with links to the drivers to because I have some problems finding the right drivers. Oracle server is 8.1.7.3 and a NT server.

    1) First, make sure that you have installed the Oracle client on the machine you're making the ODBC connection from. I assume you've done this already.
    2) You can download the Oracle ODBC Driver. Note that the version of the driver you'll want is whatever version matches your Oracle client (see step #1), not necessarily the version of the database. If you have an 8.1.7 Oracle client, for example, you'd want the latest 8.1.7.x ODBC driver. If you have an 8.0.6 Oracle client, you'd want the latest 8.0.6.x ODBC driver.
    http://otn.oracle.com/software/tech/windows/odbc/content.html
Note that there will be a couple of README's in your download that probably give more complete install information.
    3) In the Oracle section of the Start Menu, the Oracle client install (step #1) will put a link to the Oracle Universal Installer. Point that at the JAR file you downloaded in step #2 and tell it to install.
    4) Smile & do the happy dance. You're ready to roll.

  • ODBC Installation on PC Clients -

    soapbox on
I'm confused as to why upgrading a PC client ODBC is so complicated. I tripped over this again trying to get a fix to a problem that required the 8.1.6.3 upgrade, when we have deployed a mixture of 8.0.5 and 7.3.4 clients.
I've heard plenty on the architecture and so forth. That seems irrelevant to Oracle creating simple installation/upgrade packages.
It seems to me that a self unpacking EXE with a built in installer similar to upgrading a SUN JRE ( Java Runtime Environment ) would be more than sufficient for upgrading a client.
Instead, I need to download the client and install it separately, then use the Oracle Installer from that install to install 3 DLLs for ODBC through a separate download ( and update the registry, ad nauseam ).
Yes, I understand about the client and SQL*Net dependencies, and setup of TNSNAMES and ORACLE_HOME and all that.
And I think that Installer and all the capability is very, very useful on the servers and admin pcs... it just feels totally inappropriate and bulky for the desktop ( which probably outnumber the server/admins by 100 to 1, making upgrades all the more painful ) Which contributes to the type of complaints about unnecessary complexity I hear from PC developers who encounter Oracle the first time... and leads to Oracle desupport by those developers in favor of other products. ( Often the complexity is necessary and they don't understand it.. but in this case I gotta agree! )
The apparent lack of compatibility between release changes (for even basic functionality if we aren't interested in the new features )... and "Installer du jour" versions seem to be aggravating the situation.
Since there seem to be a considerable number of PCs out there these days, maybe catering to simplified installation/upgrade approaches should be a strong consideration for Oracle in the future...
    soapbox off

I would suggest an uninstall/reinstall of Palm Desktop.
Use the control panel to uninstall the software.  This normally will not delete any user data, and it will return when reinstalled.
My guess is a Micro$oft update may have scrambled something in Palm Desktop...

  • Net 8 and ODBC installation

I'm running on Win2K-Pro. I have downloaded the Oracle 8.1.5 ODBC drivers. I need to install them. How? It seems I need some sort of client installation program. Where do I get it?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

If you choose Downloads from the options in the OTN page header, there will be an option for the Oracle 9i database. Under that is an option to download the 9i client. If you choose Downloads from the options in the OTN header, there will also be a link to archived products which will let you download the 8.1.7 Oracle client. I don't believe OTN has download options for anything earlier, since 8.1.7 is the earliest supported release.

  • ODBC: Oracle Universal Installer Crash on Windows 7 (Workaround found)

Clicking 'next' on first screen in the 10g installer makes the installer crash, showing a message 'Abnormal program termination. An internal error has occurred. Please provide the following files to Oracle Support: "Unknown" "Unknown" "Unknown". Goal for the moment is just to install ODBC. The read me in the ODBC driver 10.2.0.2.0 .exe says: This section assumes the following: Oracle Universal Installer shipping with 10.2.0.0.0 has already been installed on your system. Presuming that 10.2.0.0.0 is referring to another ODBC installer, this exe is not available, so how to install this? Since the installer from 10g is crashing, tried older ones, without success. What is going on? Is it a windows setting somewhere? How to just simply install the Oracle ODBC? Really no problems installing any other software. Avoiding of space in pathnames does not make any difference. Selecting optionbutton 'basic installation' and 'advanced installation' in installer gui both crash when continuing with 'next' ('advanced' does not have any values in that stage).

How to just simply install the Oracle ODBC?Probably what you're after is an oracle client install, no need to install a database if you just want ODBC. There is a small Express client on the XE download page, although I'm not sure if it includes ODBC drivers. The full 11g client software is at http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle11g/112010_win32soft.html
There is a support note 781054.1, if you're on 64-bit hardware with some how-tos on getting to the 32 bit ODBC drivers.

  • Netezza ODBC on 64 bit Windows 7

    After some help here :
With a client, I've got nzodbcsetup.exe which is always installing 64 bit drivers, No good to me as Im running OBIEE locally and need to install 32 bit drivers.
Does anybody know If I need a 32-bit only ODBC installer or can I specify something when installing to force a 32 bit install ?
Weird thing is, its the same download as the other developers are using on OK on their 32 bit machines, just my laptop is installing as 64 bit ?
Is it likely the install file would handle both 32 bit and 64 bit installs ? BTW its a 44mb exe !
Should I be asking for a 32 bit only installer?

  • ODBC Driver raising Fatal Error on Windows

    Dear Friends,
I am facing FATAL Error Exception C5 from 8.1.6 and above oracle clients on windows 9X/2k/XP from VFP7/8. Error does not occur @ very first sqlexecute statement. It occurs at any no of statement. When user goes thru Foxpro Debugging mode it occurs with less frequency.
It is working fine with Orcle Client 8.1.5.

Hi, I also have a similar problem.
I use oracleinstantclient 10.1, and sometimes I get C5 in VFP9 when calling a procedure on the server using ODBC.
I looked on the forums and I found that one way to solve it is to not send <?variables> to ODBC driver, ex:
    instead of
    {CALL PACK_MG_EVOLUTIE.GEN_MG_INDICATORI(?lcSchema, ?lnMonth1, ?lnYear1, ?lnMonth2, ?lnYear2, ?lnType, ?lcMessage)}
    use
    {CALL PACK_MG_EVOLUTIE.GEN_MG_INDICATORI('SCHEMA_NAME', 6, 2005, 6, 2005, 1, 'MESSAGE')}
That solved my problem, but now I use oracleinstantclient 10.2 and I get
1526 Connectivity error: Unable to retrieve specific error information. Driver is probably out of resources.
Has anybody encountered the same problem?
I want to use instantclient 10.2 because I got the odbc installer to work on Windows 98.

  • [Fwd: Creating an ODBC Driver with Forte]

Has anyone created an ODBC driver with Forte? The Microsoft ODBC
Software Development Kit (SDK) assumes that ODBC drivers will be
developed in C. I would like to write the driver in Forte TOOL. Even
though C++ code can be generated from TOOL code, I am not certain that
the generated C++ code will conform to the ODBC API, and be compatible
with other ODBC components, such as the ODBC Driver Manager, ODBC
Installer, and ODBC Test applications supplied by Microsoft with the
ODBC SDK. Any advice would be appreciated. (The purpose of my ODBC
driver is to enable data access by any ODBC client application, using
calls to Forte service objects to retrieve and process the data before
it is sent to the client application.)

The following is extracted from Oralce's Metalink: (sorry lost the link)
"This is an NLS related issue. The ODBC driver uses the values derived from the NLS_LANG setting from the Oracle Home where the driver is installed.
The application actually uses the number setting from the NT Regional Settings.
When these two settings differ, then the decimal character will be cut off. This behaviour is also described in Bug:694323.
    Example:
You have set your NLS_LANG in the ORACLE_HOME of your ODBC driver to GERMAN_GERMANY.WE8ISO8859P1. This will result in a value for the NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS of ",." (the first part of the NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS being the decimal character and the second part being the group separator).
So the "." is used by the Application and the "," is used by the Oracle ODBC driver.
As a result numeric values in your Oracle Database with an integer and a decimal part will thus be displayed by the application without the decimal character, i.e. a value of 10,734 will be displayed as 10734 a value of 0,123 will be displayed as 123.
To fix this, you will either have to correct the character used for the Decimal Symbol of your NT Regional settings to match the value of your Oracle NLS_LANG setting or vice versa. To change the value for NLS_LANG, go to your registry and change the NLS_LANG parameter that is situated under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE/HOMEnnn/NLS_LANG where HOMEnnn is the home where your Oracle ODBC driver is installed."
Hope this helps, resolved our issue with this problem.

  • 11g R2 Custom Installation

I have been asked to install and test Oracle 11g ODBC driver to connect to 11g DB for a legacy application and I'm trying to have a minimized installed. I am new to Oracle FYI. I am using Windows 7.
If I select Custom Installation Type and select 'Oracle ODBC Driver' only, do I need any other components to test this connection from .Net or Toad?
I have seen an Instant Client with ODBC installer but I am not sure which direction to go.

    Hi,
If you do a Custom installation and select ONLY the ODBC driver, it will also install the dependencies (ie, Oracle client) along with that, which will give you all the pieces you need to connect to a remote Oracle database. You'll need to create a tnsnames.ora file manually (or copy one) though if you're going to use tnsnames.
I'd recommend though, if you go that route, to also install sqplus at the same time, as then you'll have a way to confirm client connectivity outside of ODBC.
Instant client would also work, and be much smaller, but it's a little trickier as far as the setup goes.. nothing drastic, but going the OUI route instead it will pretty much "just work" after the OUI finishes. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/instant-client/index-097480.html
    Hope it helps,
    correction/comments welcome.

  • ODBC driver install failure

I'm trying to simply install the Oracle 9 odbc drivers on winxp/win2k boxes.
First, you have to install the Oracle Universal Installer, which is actually called the 'Oracle Software Packager' on the downloads screen.
Next, with the OUI, install the ODBC drivers (9.2.0.4). The OUI throws several errors in a row, and wont install the drivers.
Some of the support documents say that the Oracle Net Client needs to be installed first. All I want is the ODBC drivers, which will be used by Access/Excel/Brio/SQLServer to connect to an Oracle db.
Do I actually need to install this other piece of software to get the ODBC drivers?
If so, where can I find such a thing? There is no such software listed on the software downloads page, but given that the OUI is actually called something completely different on the software downloads page, I figure it may be named something else. Can someone please point me at the correct location?

Yes, you need to install the Oracle client before you can install the ODBC drivers. If you go to download the database, there is a client only download option for Windows (the full database download has a client-only install option on all platforms). Be aware that even the client-only install is a rather hefty download.
