Odd anomaly in Safari

This happens only in Safari.
When I'm in the "Top Site" view and click on one of my "sites" at least 1/2 the time before the site pops up on the screen I get this odd sort of gray green giant pixilation thing. Sort of an extreme closeup view of the the pixels that make up a letter or number. It what a crossword puzzle would look like except the boxes are grey-green on a white back ground.
It happens constantly-flashes then disappears. Haven't been able to take a picture or video, I suppose I could try. Took it to Genius Bar and of course didn't happen in front of them. Does not happen in Firefox, only in Safari.
Also, I have the Macbook Pro 2.4 with the suspect video chip-but I don't think it is related.
Anyone?

I get the gray box sometimes. Must be the IPS or Safari being slow in suppling the web page (or something). Never really paid attention to it.

  • Odd fonts in safari

In some web pages Safari displays an odd non-english font that looks like it could be some sort of eastern european or arabic or something. I assume there's something wrong with the fonts somewhere but I don't know why it would happen in some pages but not others.

    Hi Firepod,
Perhaps Kurts font management will help look at this top.

  • Odd situation with Safari after enabling account expiration and locking

    Hi team,
i found the following puzzling situation today.
I enabled account expiration and locking in a workspace, thereafter all end users were requested to change their password as soon as they attempted to login to the application.
Some of these users went through this process smoothly and after changing the password they could log in. Others apparently succeeded in changing the password but the password change process is triggered again and again.
These users are receiving the following message after clicking on "apply changes" (p50 of app 4155).
ERR-1777: Page 50 provided no page to branch to. Please report this error to your application administrator.
When clicking on "restart application", they get the following additional screen:
You have successfully logged out. You have been redirected here after using a logout link provided by an authentication scheme. To redirect to a page in your flow instead, do something like this:
Create a page in your flow and give it an alias PUBLIC_PAGE.
On the Flow Builder page attributes page, select the "Yes - This page is public" Public Page attribute.
Change the logout URL in your authentication template to redirect to this new page after the logout procedure executes. For example, using the API, make your logout URL:
    wwv_flow_custom_auth_std.logout?p_this_flow=&FLOW_ID&p_next_flow_page_sess=&FLOW_ID:PUBLIC_PAGE:&SESSION
Note that the suggested URL uses a somewhat outdated syntax lacking the period after the application items, so you might want to revise it for future releases.
After various tests it turned out that the problem is in the browser (don't ask me what).
Safari users do not succeed in changing their passwords through page 4155:50, while Firefox users do.
I have a password change page inside my application though and everybody can change their password from there successfully.
Also, after changing the password using Firefox, Safari users can log in without problems whatsoever.
So the final question is: what's wrong with page 50 of application 4155 when run from Safari on Mac?
It happened with Apex 3.1.2 and Safari Version 3.2.1 (5525.27.1)
    Thanks!

    Scott,
that was exactly what i was about to do yesterday night, but at the post office i realized i didn't know the address :D
Then, fortunately for me, but regrettably for you (hehehe), i realized that Safari is not the culprit.
For some reason people using Safari were always submitting the page with enter, while Firefox users were submitting with the button.
I made a test and Safari is fine as long as you click on the button, the bug is in the submit through the enter key.
Thanks and sorry about the mac air, may be the next time!

  • Garbled Text/Odd font in Safari since updating to Tiger.  Java related?

I seem to be having a problem with Safari since I updated to Tiger.
I'm running Safari 2.0.3, and have been encountering problems with garbled text in a strange font when Safari loads certain pages. The text often overlaps making it impossible to read.
A friend thinks it might be Java related. I've tried clearing the cache and resetting Java, but it hasn't helped.
    Here's a screenshot example: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/tashamay/Picture2.jpg
On the Petfinder.com page specifically, if I go directly to their home site everything is fine, but once I try and search the results come up all messed up.
I also have a problem with it when I try andl log into gmail. "Loading" comes up on the screen in the garbled text font as if it's trying to load an applet, but nothing happens. I eventually get the spinning rainbow of death and have to force quit.
    Any ideas?

    Hello tashamay:
I am not an expert in font issues, but you may have corrupt fonts. Open "font book.' Select all and run resolve duplicates. Then select all and run validate fonts. I also have read that Helvetica fractional fonts have caused some rendering problems.
I would also clear the Safari cache again.

  • Desktop is Gone, Mail and Safari were reset and a host of other problems

So, I opened my iMac G5 today and the first thing I noticed was that some of my widgets were gone, particularly all the ones that didn't come with the OS X installation (meaning the other ones I downloaded from different sites). And then I noticed that I couldn't access any of my mail when I looked at them in Mail. I was given an error message that read something like this: "you cannot view this message. it has not be downloaded from the server. you must go online". So anyway, I decided to shut down and turn my computer on again. And I was shocked to see that my desktop was gone, and my wallpaper had reverted back to the default wallpaper (but I was atleast able to find all the files that used to be on my desktop). And now, Mail has been reset (meaning, when I launch it, it asks me to set up a new account). iChat has been reset the same way as well. And for some very odd reason, my Safari browser has lost it's tabbed browsing ability, and I've lost all my bookmarks. I checked the version, and it says 2.0.4. Did I somehow revert back to on older version of Safari. So far, those are the only problems I've discovered. I'm terribly hesitant to turn my computer off again in fear that I might lose some more files for good.
Anyway, I have an idea of what the culprit might be. I downloaded this program from VEOH.com and decided to uninstall it last night. It came with an "uninstall how to" that asked me to type some stuff in Terminal (I knew I should have just kept that **** program!). This is what it asked me to type:
    prompt> sudo /Applications/Veoh.app/Contents/Resources/uninstallveoh.sh
And then Terminal asked for my admin password, and I hit the Return key. Would anyone know, if this is what could be causing me all these problems? I also recently installed Yahoo 3.0 Beta 1. It conflicts with Mail. I can't open Yahoo 3.0 when Mail is running.
Also, I found the bookmarks.plist file for Safari. I'm wondering if I can somehow do something with this file so that I can get my old bookmarks back. Would really appreciate any help!
Ugh! I feel like a such a Windows user right now.

    Hi, Barry.
Thanks for the reply! I've found all of my files (the ones that used to be on my old desktop), and I've been able to restore my bookmarks and all my old mail. Also, I just had to recheck "enable tabbed browsing" in Safari Preferences. I think I just figured out what I did wrong: I renamed my "home" folder. I was gonna change it back to it's original name, but I forgot to. Stupid me. So after restarting, I think it just moved all of my files into a new folder which I can still access by going to Macintosh HD >>> Users. All the files are there, including the widgets that I thought were missing. So now, I essentially have 4 folders under users, but I only have 3 user accounts. You think I can restore everything back to normal by just copying all of the old files back into my home folder again? But at any rate, I think I can live with having all my files just living in another folder. I lost my old "music", "pictures" and "movies" icons though (the ones at the left sidebar of the Finder window). Those are the only things I can't seem to find. So I just downloaded new icons.
What's a good brand of external firewire drives? I'm thinking of getting a Maxtor OneTouch III. Would you recommend that?

  • Why does Safari only display the first page of PDFs

When I use Safari to view PDFs attached to a web site I manage only the first page of the PDF displays. There is no problem if I use other browsers. Also the problem is specific to my machine as other Mac users can view all pages of the PDF on their machines. I have looked at Safari Preferences but there does not appear to be any incorrect settings.

    Hi
do you have any 'pdf' plugins showing in HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ ?
If you do, quit all browsers & drag the plugin to the Desktop, or some other folder, then test pdf's again. If they still display oddly, try quitting Safari & removing the file Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist.
If np pdf plugins show, try the plist move anyway & if you still have problems, it's helpful to test this in a New User Account which takes but a few minutes & tells us if it's a system-wide issue, or restricted to your regular user.

  • Deactivated Subpixel Font Smoothing In Safari

I was reading an apple technical note ( https://developer.apple.com/library/safari/technotes/tn2220/_index.html ) within the Safari browser and noticed that the text font did not appear to be smoothed. I confirmed the fact by zooming and making note of the lack of color within the letter which is a sure marker of font smoothing. Late that day I noticed the same thing in the Harmony Central Forums ( http://www.harmonycentral.com/t5/Electric-Guitars/Review-NGD-Xavier-XV-500-Pics- and-Recording/m-p/29888705/highlight/true#M3683950 ). I then opened the same pages in both Firefox and Chrome, both of with rendered the text using subpixel font smoothing. One further thing that stuck me as odd is that Safari does use subpixel rendering on certain pages, such as the text in this forum. I have searched for an option to turn subpixel smoothing on within the Safari preferences, but had no luck along that route.
I don't think this has anything to do with it but I thought I would mention that I have the "Use LCD Font Smoothing" within the General System Preferences set to Level 2 (done with a terminal command). edit- I actually just set LCD Font Smooth to the standard (bolder) on setting and then restarted Safari. It made the text that was previously smoothed dark, but had no effect on the previously (and still) un-smoothed text.
I was hoping someone could tell me what is going on here and how to activate subpixel smoothing within Safari, because I like the browser and the way smoothed fonts look.
(I am using Mavericks, Safari 7, Chrome 31 and Firefox 25)

Unfortunately, we do not support fonts on your operating system. Hopefully another customer is more familiar with this.

  • Safari launches without open window?

    Hi folks.
I have upgraded to ML and have an odd issue with Safari.  Its in my login items and it launches on startup.  BUT now suddenly it does not open a window on startup.  I have a set of three sites in a folder which used to be my "startup sites" that would auto load first thing in the morning, but now nothing doing.
I have turned off the RESUME functions because I didnt want a dozen things from the previous day loading and cluttering the new day first up, and thats what seems to have broken the Safari.  Is there a way for it to function as before?  So that only the login items open and they open completely with windows?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Safari Staying on top

I've been having an odd issue with Safari that been happening more recently over the past few days, but has been there for a while. If I'm browsing in Safari and I click somewhere else, such as on a finder window, the finder window would come into focus (over the Safari window) but the tool bar still says it's on Safari. I would have to click on to click between Safari and the finder window a few times before it works.
Another issue I've had that's similar to this is there are times when I'm click on other windows and Safari refuses to go into the background (even if I use Expose and select another window, Safari stays in the foreground no matter what I do). The only way around this would be to close the Safari window.
Is anyone having any issues with this? I'm using Version 3.1.1 (5525.18).

This is happening to me too. It's a brand new install of Snow Leopard

  • QuickTime 7 update changes Safari browsing experience for 10.3.9 Panther

    Dear friends,
If this topic has been covered already, please forgive this posting. I have searched the Message Board on this and only found one post (which was back in October). I am running 10.3.9 Panther, and after updating from QT 6 to QT 7, I am seeing some odd behaviors in Safari.
When I scroll up or down through a web page, the Flash or QT advertisements seem to "bob" up and down, and do not stay fixed in one place. (In fact, any QuickTime clip or Flash animation "bobs" up and down.) This is a definite change from my browsing experience when I had QT 6 installed (where everything was a fixed on the web page when I scrolled up or down). It is not the end of the world, but it is a bit annoying (especially since I will be experimenting with web development soon, and want to have an "accurate" view of my pages). Even movie trailers "bob" up and down when I select them from Apple's QT site.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what is going on from a technical standpoint? Thank you all for your time and efforts.
NOTE: I have also posted this on the Safari Discussions, but since this problem appears to stem from QuickTime 7 (at least, that's my working theory), I thought I would post here as well.

    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I installed iLife 06 on my G5 1.8 DP running OSX 10.3.9 Panther. It required the install of QuickTime 7.0.4. Now, in Safari everytime I want to listen to a music clip and get the QT pop up music player, when I close the QT window, it crashes Safari. I used the link posted in quite a few threads here to deinstall QT 7.0.4 (and revert to QT 7.0.1), and the Safari/QT problem is gone. However, I have now lost features in the various iLife programs which will only work with QT 7.0.4. If it is any consolation, this problem was NOT unique to OSX 10.3.9. I had the same problem on my G4 PowerBook 1.5 12" as well. The solution was the same, but, with the loss of features in iLife 06. Hopefully, Apple will come out with some update SOON which remedies this conflict.

  • Annoying illogical Safari issues...

So lately I have ran into some very odd issues regarding Safari. I'll check say, Facebook or something and be done. I'll quit the application, (command-Q, I don't just click the red dot) and then switch to Mail or something. 15 seconds or so later, I get a window pop up on the screen that Safari "quit unexpectedly". Now as far as I know, that only comes up when it crashes? Kind of annoying.
Another thing is my bookmarks. I have a folder of various bookmarked websites I enjoy to look at in the morning to catch up on the news and whatnot. A couple weeks ago, I went to open it and there were several websites in there that were NEVER in there before. What the heck?! I edited it and got the websites I wanted back. Now, last night, I went to look at an Apple rumour website ( :P ) and it wasn't there! All that remained in the folder was Facebook. The other 6 websites were in there hours earlier, but now they are not. These issues are annoying me. Does someone have a solution? Thanks!

    Hi,
First, make sure your system software is up to date. Click the Apple () menu (top left in your screen) Software Update ...
If you are already running Safari 5.0.3, post a crash report so we can try and help. Safari unexpectedly quitting is the same as a crash.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.
You could try deleting Facebook cookies. From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all Facebook cookies. Restart your Mac. If you still get the "Safari unexpectedly quit" dialog, post a crash report.

  • Safari 5.1 crashing using Software Update

Noticed an odd behavior with Safari.
    I have AdBlock/Twitter/1Password Extensions installed.
When I have Safari 5.1 opened and then go to check for Software Updates, Safari instantly crashes.   For me, this is very repeatable.   Anyone else having this issue?
I'm on a early 2008 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo

I'm having a similar problem.  Safari never crashed before the 5.1 update.  Now, it will randomly freeze every time I use it.  It happens on many different websites, usually when I've had Safari open around 3-5 minutes.  If I switch to 32-bit mode, it won't freeze.  For now I'm just using Firefox, but this problem is really annoying.  I also tried re-installing it completey, but that didn't help.

  • Reinstall safari will not work

I had an odd situation with safari. After I updated my computer, safari would not open after I clicked on the icon in the dock. The icon would jump and "safari" would flash in the toolbar but never open. A guy at the apple store suggested deleting safari and reinstalling it. I downloaded safari and go through the motions and when I get to which drive to select it tells me that my hard drive can not support it and I must have 10.5.2 or newer. I have 10.5.4
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Matthew

    Hi matthew:
Since several things have happened (I hate to guess, flounder around, and possibly make things worse), I think I would probably opt for an archive and install. That will take a couple of hours, but will install a fresh copy of OS X (including Safari) while preserving your files, programs, and settings:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
You would, of course, need to run software update after that to bring everything up to date. It is always a good idea to backup up before any software changes. I use both Time Machine and also make bootable clones using a little program called SuperDuper! ($28 at www.shirt-pocket.com).

If the problem could be adware or malware, a product you may have inadvertently downloaded
to do something and then found the computer acted up, there are ways to remove those things.
However it helps to know what computer model build year and OS X the machine is running.
Then what the problem is, with detail to describe what it is doing wrong, or not doing right...
If you have odd issues in Safari browser, there are methods and descriptions here that may help:

  • Mouse pointer freeze

hi i recently buyed a macbook, but from time to time the mouse pointer freezes for a few seconds.I disabled already the two fingers option from the touchpad,(found that suggestion in a forum ) but without success. Is that problem known, or has somebody an idea what that could be ? Thanks for help!

This has been happening to my MacBook Pro for the past few months now. At first I thought it was a bad mouse, but I've tried 3 known good mice and they all exhibit the same problem.
    Another behavior I'm seeing:
When the freeze occurs, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th mouse buttons all lose the the functionality I've assigned to them (Exposé functions) and revert so some odd behavior: In Safari, button 4 simulates clicking the 'Back' button. On most other apps, nothing happens. Button 5 is the same except with the 'Forward' button in Safari. If I wait a couple of seconds, the mouse and buttons start working as normal.
Is this happening to you as well?
